  • installing application packages on ubuntu usb

    - by mazel
I'm new to ubuntu. I downloaded the newest version on a usb stick then I booted my PC with the usb. upon trying out ubuntu I tried installing additional packages/applications, which worked fine. BUT when I then after tried using my ubuntu usb, the new installed apps were not there! if I get that right, ubuntu would only install new packages to the actual PC I'm using it on. not within ubuntu itself!? is there a way that I can install new applications to my ubuntu usb and it should stay within ubuntu so I can use it for other pc's which don't have an internet connection necessary to update/install packages ? thanks so much

  • MEncoder Install on Ubuntu

    - by Tauqeer Ahmad
I am writing this after checking almost all the posts but none of those solved my problem. I am trying to install mencoder to process some videos but there are strange errors coming. For examples when I try sudo apt-get install mencoder the following errors comes out: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: mencoder : Depends: mplayer Depends: libasound2 (> 1.0.24.1) Depends: libavcodec53 (>= 4:0.8~beta2-2) but it is not installable or libavcodec-extra-53 (>= 4:0.8~beta2-2) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libavformat53 (>= 4:0.8~beta2-2) but it is not installable or libavformat-extra-53 (>= 4:0.8~beta2-2) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libcdparanoia0 (>= 3.10.2+debian) but it is not installable Depends: libenca0 (>= 1.9) but it is not installable Depends: libfontconfig1 (>= 2.8.0) but it is not installable Depends: libgif4 (>= 4.1.4) but it is not installable Depends: libjpeg8 (>= 8c) but it is not installable Depends: liblzo2-2 but it is not installable Depends: libsmbclient (>= 3.0.24) but it is not installable Depends: libspeex1 (>= 1.2~beta3-1) but it is not installable Depends: libtheora0 (>= 1.0) but it is not installable E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. • Install gcc on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

    - by Brian M. Hunt
When I try to install gcc on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Server with apt-get install gcc, I get the following error: The following packages have unmet dependencies: gcc : Depends: cpp (>= 4:4.6.1-2ubuntu5) but it is not going to be installed Depends: gcc-4.6 (>= 4.6.1-1) but it is not going to be installed Recommends: libc6-dev but it is not going to be installed or libc-dev When I delve deeper (i.e. try to apt-get install gcc-4.6), I get: gcc-4.6 : Depends: gcc-4.6-base (= 4.6.1-9ubuntu3) but 4.6.3-1ubuntu5 is to be installed Depends: cpp-4.6 (= 4.6.1-9ubuntu3) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libgomp1 (>= 4.6.1-9ubuntu3) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libquadmath0 (>= 4.6.1-9ubuntu3) but it is not going to be installed Recommends: libc6-dev (>= 2.13-0ubuntu6) but it is not going to be installed So when I try to install gcc-4.6=4.6.1-9ubuntu3 I get a list of 366 packages to remove (including e.g. apt). Which is craziness. This is an essentially vanilla installation of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Server (i.e. I installed nginx, python-flup, python-yaml, rsync, python-pkg-resources, lsof, fontconfig, iptables, ufw, scons, and grc). It is very surprising to me that I cannot install gcc, so I am somewhat confused as to why attempting to install gcc fails. The only apparent fix would seem to be uninstalling 366 packages, many of which are central to the operation of Ubuntu. Something doesn't add up, and I would be very grateful for assistance. EDIT The above is with the latest packages of course, having used apt-get update; apt-get upgrade before attempting the above. Sorry, I should have mentioned that.

  • How do I force apt-get to install a package that will not install due to a bug introduced by Ubuntu 11.10?

    - by Hemm
Ubuntu 11.10 separated out python-profiler from the Python standard library due to licensing philosophies. (According to what I could Google, correct me if I'm wrong.) This is an active bug since October for 11.10. I have Python 2.7.2 installed, so the dependency errors are wrong. 'apt-get check' does not resolve the problem. What is the best way to resolve to this? Thank you. sudo apt-get install python-profiler Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: python-profiler : Depends: python (>= 2.5) but it is not going to be installed Depends: python (< 2.8) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

  • User Produtivity Kit - Powerful Packages (Part 1)

    - by [email protected]
User Productivity Kit provides the ability to create a variety of content types including robust topics on system process and web pages with formatted text and graphics. There are times when you want to enhance content with media types not naively created by User Productivity Kit, media types such as video, custom animations, forms, and more. One method of doing this is to maintain these media files on a web server - separate from the User Productivity Kit player content and link to the files using absolute URLs such as http://myserver/overview.html. While this will get you going, you won't benefit from the content management capabilities of the UPK Developer. Features such as check-in / check-out, history, document properties, folder permissions and more are not available to this external content. Further, if you ever need to move that content to a server with a different name or domain, you'd need to update all your links. UPK version 3.1 introduced a new document type - the package. A package is a group of folders and files that you manage in the Developer library as a single document. These package documents work in the same manner as any other document in the library and you can use all of the collaborative content development features you see with other document types. Packages can be used for anything from single Word documents, PDF files, and graphics to more intricate sets of inter-related files commonly seen with HTML files and their graphics, style sheets, and JavaScript files. The structure of the files and folders within a package will always be preserved so this means that any relative links between files in the package will work. For example, an HTML file containing an image tag with a relative link to a graphic elsewhere in the same package will continue to function properly both when viewed in the Developer and when published to outputs such as the UPK Player. Once you start to use packages, you'll soon discover that there is a lot of existing content that can be re-purposed by placing it into UPK packages. Packages are easily created by selecting File...New...Package. Files can be added in a number of ways including the "Add Files" button, copy & paste from Windows Explorer, and drag & drop. To use one of the files in the package, just create a link to the file in the package you want to target. This is supported throughout the Developer in places such as section & topic concepts, frame links and hyperlinks in web pages. A little more challenging is determining how to structure packages in your library. As I mentioned earlier, a package can contain anything from a single file to dozens of files and folders. So what should you do? You could create a package for each file. You could create one package for all your files. But which one is right? Well, there's not a right and wrong answer to this question. There are advantages and disadvantages to each. The right decision will be influenced by the package files themselves, the structure of the content in the library, the size and working style of the development team, how content is shared between different outlines and more. The first consideration can be assessed the quickest. If the content to be placed in the package is composed of multiple files and those files reference each other, they should be in the same package. There are loads of examples of this type of content. HTML files with graphics and style sheets, HTML files with embedded Flash movies, and Word documents saved as HTML are all examples where the content is composed of multiple files and the files reference each other in some way. Content like this should always be placed in a singe package such that these relative links between the files are preserved and play properly in the UPK Player. In upcoming posts, I'll explain additional considerations.

  • Install package with dependencies offline

    - by ArtemStorozhuk
Right now I have 2 computers: Has connection to the internet and has installed package A. Doesn't have connection to the WEB. On this PC I need to install package A. I decided to download all needed packages using first PC and transfer them to the second PC via USB. I have searched how to get all needed packages for some deb installation and here's what I've found. But when I run: apt-get --print-uris --yes install A | grep ^\' | cut -d\' -f2 > downloads.list on first PC I got empty file because this package is already installed there (and I don't want to uninstall it). Also package A is very complicated and depends on package B which depends on package C and package C is not installed on the second PC. So how can I download all needed packages? Or is there any other way of installing it? Thanks for the help.

  • Remove packages to tranform ubuntu Desktop to Server?

    - by Azendale
I have a VPS that has Ubuntu 11.10 on it. Unfortunately, only the 11.10 Desktop (not server) image was available as an image to install your VPS with. How can I remove the packages included in the Desktop install, and, if needed, install the packages that only the server install has? I've tried sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop and then sudo apt-get autoremove. Unfortunately, that didn't work: it only removed 'libjudy-debian' (or something like that) which was installed from having 'miredo' installed at one point.

  • Get a list of packages on a fresh install

    - by cshubhamrao
I want a list of all packages installed, along with versions (if possible) on a clean install of Ubuntu (any version). I can use dpkg -l | grep '^ii' | awk '{print $2" "$3}' on a fresh installation, but that's not a good idea, as when a new version of Ubuntu is available, it has to be re run. Rather than relying on scripts, I prefer having a file, which lists all the packages that are installed on all systems

  • installed openstack using devstack install shell script but getting 500 error when i try opening dashboard

    - by Arvind
I followed the instructions at http://devstack.org/guides/single-machine.html to install OpenStack. I first installed Ubuntu on my Windows 7 PC using the officially supported Windows installer for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. And after that I followed the instructions at above page to install OpenStack. As per instructions, I should be able to access the dashboard aka Horizon, at http://192.168.1.4/ (thats the IP of the PC on which I installed Ubuntu-OpenStack). However I am getting a 500 error web page when I open that. How do I resolve this error? I want to set up a dev environment for OpenStack. • Problem with apt-get update: failed to fetch error

    - by user171447

  • Dependency issue when installing some packages with apt

    - by Julien Genestoux
We have a little trouble installing some php5-* packages. I am reallt not sure what is going on. We have the latest version of php5-common. # apt-get install php5-mcrypt Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. • What are my alternatives to manage Python packages for clients?

    - by c00kiemonster
So the setup is a slew of proprietary server/client Python applications running on one Linux box (the server) and a set of Windows 7 workstations (the clients). Everything is running smoothly until any of the proprietary Python packages needs updating. For now I am using distutils eggs which are very easily updated with easy_install, but it is still a manual process which quickly becomes tedious as the number of applications and client workstations grow. The ideal setup IMHO is to have the Python packages on the server so when a client application is launched on a workstation the client application can check to see whether its current Python packages are up-to-date. If not, the client application should download the newer Python package from the server, install it, and then launch as per normal. Does this sounds familiar to anyone? I have tried to find alternatives myself, but as far as I can see there is no Python module offering this functionality. Does anyone have any home made solutions for this?

  • Quick Outline: Navigating Your PL/SQL Packages in Oracle SQL Developer

    - by thatjeffsmith
If you’re browsing your packages using the Connections panel, you have a nice tree navigator to click around your packages and your variable, procedure, and functions. Click, click, click all day long, click, click, click while I sing this song… But What if you drill into your PL/SQL source from the worksheet and don’t have the Tree expanded? Let’s say you’re working on your script, something like - Hmm, what goes next again? So I need to reacquaint myself with just what my beer package requires, so I’m going to drill into it by doing a DESCRIBE (via SHIFT+F4), and now I have the package open. The package is open but the tree hasn’t auto-expanded. Please don’t tell me I have to do the click-click-click thing in the tree!?! Just Open the Quick Outline Panel Do you see it? Just right click in the procedure editor – select the ‘Quick Outline’ in the context menu, and voila! The navigational power of the tree, without needing to drill down the tree itself. If I want to drill into my procedure declaration, just click on said procedure name in the Quick Outline panel. This works for both package specs and bodies. Technically you can use this for stand alone procedures and functions, but the real power is demonstrated for packages.

  • Software center is broken and can not be repaired or reinstalled

When I open the software center, I am told that I can not use it, for it is broken, and needs to be repaired. First I try to do this automatically, as I was offered. First of all, I've tried reinstalling the center, but it failed due to the same 1.4 dependency as is laid out here. I've googled for help and although I don't understand linux at all, I've tried some suggestions: I've tried editing the dpkg status in /var/lib/dpkg/status which failed because the file could not be found. I've tried purging wine/* but that had unresolved dependencies as well. It's a giant mess.

  • Can't (re)Install VLC (removed by update{again})

    - by David matthews
I use VLC a lot, And When 2.0 came out Ubuntu did not update to that version, the REPO had the older version even months later, So I added the daily repo: http://ppa.launchpad.net/videolan/stable-daily/ubuntu and that worked for a while, after a few months later I received a 'Distribution upgrade' and when I installed it, it removed VLC. when I tried to re-install it gave me a bunch of unmet dependency's, so I disabled the source, ran apt-get update, and tried to install the older VLC, that did not work either. I eventually found a web page, and it helped me get it working, and I was also able to get the 'Stable Daily' working too But last night, I got another 'disto upgrade' and it uninstalled VLC again. when I try to reinstall from daily I get: The following packages have unmet dependencies: vlc : Depends: fonts-freefont-ttf but it is not installable Depends: vlc-nox (= 2.0.3+git20121005+r392-0~r42~precise1) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libvlccore5 (>= 2.0.0) but it is not going to be installed Recommends: vlc-plugin-notify (= 2.0.3+git20121005+r392-0~r42~precise1) but it is not going to be installed Recommends: vlc-plugin-pulse (= 2.0.3+git20121005+r392-0~r42~precise1) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. and from the default source: vlc : Depends: vlc-nox (= 2.0.3-0ubuntu0.12.04.1) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libvlccore5 (>= 2.0.0) but it is not going to be installed Recommends: vlc-plugin-notify (= 2.0.3-0ubuntu0.12.04.1) but it is not going to be installed vlc-plugin-pulse : Depends: vlc-nox (= 2.0.3-0ubuntu0.12.04.1) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libvlccore5 (>= 2.0.0) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
