• Personal DNS server and fallback outside home

  I have my own DNS server at home to access local names, and that is working fine. Then I have my laptop, now obviously my laptop leaves the home now and then, therefore it accesses different nets outside my home, and my DNS server is not accessible there... So I figured that I would just add Google as secondary DNS... But actually, when I do that, then suddenly I can't access my local stuff (at home that is, obviously), like my laptop is getting a quicker response from Google's DNS or something, because it can't find anything on the addresses I use locally. If I then remove the secondary DNS, and keeps my own, then it works fine again... So do I somehow need to seperate what DNS's to use on what nets? I already use sepperate DNS settings when I connect using my 3G modem, but when I use hotspots it seems to use the same settings regardless (at least in the train), also can it differ wired connections?... Is there another solution?

• Disable Offline Files (mobsync.exe) on Windows 7 Home

  This morning I was watching the CPU graph of a Windows 7 Home laptop and noticed that every few seconds, the CPU would spike several percent. I watched the processes and determined that it was mobsync.exe (Offline Files) that was the culprit. I tried the usual steps that Googling turns up, and clicking the Manage Offline Files link to bring up the Offline Files dialog to click Disable Synch does not work because the dialog will not display. This makes sense since everything I have read indicates that Offline Files is not even included/supported in the Home version, so I am at a loss as to why it is running at all, let alone why it is sucking up CPU cycles. (My best guess is that it was started when they pressed Win+X to access the Mobility Center.) Of course I can just kill mobsync, but it could always just come back. How/why would mobsync be running on a Home version and how can it be disabled (of course the Group Policy editor is not available on a Home version).

• How come I can't ping my home computer?

  I'm trying to set up a vpn into my home computer in order to access files from wherever. I have the home computer set up with a no-ip dynamic dns program so I can always connect, and have also tried using the actual ip address. However, when I try to connect or even ping from anywhere outside of my house I can't get through. I've tried putting that particular computer in the dmz, turned off the computers firewall and anti-virus, and I still don't get anything. I have comcast as my home internet provider. I have also tried from two different locations. Are there any other solutions I can try or is comcast the issue? I used to be able to do this when I ran a small web server at home for fun but now nothing works. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

• iTunes home sharing problem

  I have two iMacs running Snow Leopard. I have iTunes home sharing setup on the two of them using the same iTunes account credentials. Up until last night all worked fine... I could download an app on one iMac, then go to the other iMac and drag that app from the home sharing into that iMac's applications. Then all of a sudden it stopped working. I can see and browse the home sharing, however, when I go to drag an app or song from the share to the local library it gives me an error stating that I am unable to do so... when I click OK to this message I lose visibility to the home share. I have checked and this iMac is authorized with my iTunes account and I have even deauthorized and reauthorized but still the same result. Does anyone have any suggestions?

• Windows 7 - Home Drive Map Fails

  Server 2003 SP2 (not R2) with 2 new Win 7 Pro workstations. Home Drive is set in AD (not GP) to map to \\server\users\username. Home Drive map fails, other network drives map correctly. No error logged on server or PC, Win 7 shows "Could not reconnect all network drives." There is no Y: (Home Drive) listed, either in the GUI or via Net Use. Manual map via batch file in startup group with the same path works correctly? Home Drive map works correctly on XP workstations.

• Router reporting failed admin login attempts from home server

  I recently noticed in the logs of my home router that it relatively regularly lists the following entry: [admin login failure] from source 192.168.0.160, Monday, June 20,2011 18:13:25 192.168.0.160 is the internal address of my home server, running Windows Home Server 2011. Is there anyway I can find out what specifically is trying to login to the router? Or is there some explanation for this behaviour? (not sure if this belongs here or on superuser...)

• Setting a subdomain to access home machine with windows remote desktop

  I'm trying to remotely connect to home machine through Windows Remote Desktop (amongst other things, but this is currently my primary focus). I can do this fine using my home WAN's static IP (thank god for cable!) with port-forwarding, but I would like to access it from a subdomain of my web-site (e.g. home.mydomain.co.uk). In the cPanel for my hosting account, I've gone into DNS zones and altered the A-record to point to my WAN's IP, which I thought should do the job, but I still cannot connect. When I ping the subdomain, I get my web-host's IP, which I guess is to be expected as I believe the DNS of the host domain is used first, then my server handles the redirection of traffic to the IP in the A-record. Is this the correct idea? Do A-record changes suffer from the same propagation delays as DNS record changes, as I suppose that could explain it? • SWT Filedialog Open into home folder

  I want to open a FileDialog window into the user home folder (i.e. /home/user or /Users/unsername) I read the user home folder, using System.getProperty: String homefolder = System.getProperty(user.home); And the variable containts the correct home folder. But when i set the filterpath in FileDialog, it opens (in linux) only the /home level not entering into the user home dir. • Missing Home Folder XP Clients 2008R2 Domain

  We just completed a migration from Server 2003 to Server 2008R2. Everything seems to have gone well except that many of our desktops have stopped mapping the Home Folder as set in Active Directory. Other mappings that are defined on individual clients are mapping just fine, these mappings are all on the same file server as the failing Home Folders. Half of the users are on 1 file server and half are on another. Users from both servers are having this problem. I have enabled the Group Policy setting to "Wait for network before logging in". I enabled the policy to "Run Logon Scripts synchronously". There are no errors on the Domain Controller or either File Server. When I enabled Group Policy Preferences as an attempted workaround, I get this error: The user 'V:' preference item in the '<Policy Name>' Group Policy object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x800708ca This network connection does not exist.' This error was suppressed. This seems to indicate that the network connection is not ready by the time Group Policy is processed. But isn't this the point of the "Wait before logging in" and "Run Logon scripts synchronously" settings? Some other background facts: The new Server 2008R2 installation is a Virtual Machine. It is on a new Subnet in a different building from the old server. DNS and DHCP were also migrated from the old DC to this new DC. These Home Folders were all working properly before the migration. Are there new security restrictions/policies in Server 2008R2 that might be causing this? Is there a way to check whether I have an underlying network connectivity issue? Maybe moving the server to the new building is causing a delay/timeout? Any thoughts or ideas on what could be causing this or how I can resolve this? Thanks.

• Using Apache / Kerberos / Keytab to Authenticate Redmine Users Against Active Directory

  Please bare with me, as I am still fresh to these technologies. We have a Debian (squeeze) server to which I have root access. It is running Apache, and Redmine is deployed to the server (currently using a local MySQL database for authentication). Apache is configured to use Kerberos and a keytab file to authenticate users against Active Directory. With the current configuration, as soon as a user attempts to access anything over https, the user is prompted for a username / password, which is successfully authenticated against Active Directory. I understand (somewhat) that Redmine has its own LDAP configuration that can be used to authenticate users against an existing Active Directory, but this would require the user to enter their credentials one time for Apache and then a second time for Redmine. I am wondering, Can I somehow configure Redmine to share the Apache authentication method as opposed to requiring the user to enter their credentials a second time? (Using Apache to authenticate against Active Directory is a requirement for a separate application on the server)

  There is a good tutorial of creation of Sharepoint 2010 My-sites here. In my environment I can't get the connection to Active Directory work, as it fails with: "An operation error occurred." There is a text "For Active Directory connections to work, this account must have directory sync rights." but I don't know what that means... My question is: There is nothing in the Event Log. Where is the error-log? :-)

• Dash (-) in directory listing

  I've Googled around for this to no avail, I'm sure its just something simple but I have not been able to figure this out perhaps because searching in Google or SF for a "-" can be problematic. I had a strange directory listing show up the other day in my git repository within Drupal. Listing my sites directory looks like this: -sh-4.1$ ls -al total 52 drwxr-xr-x 5 (hide) (hide) 4096 Dec 6 16:15 . drwxr-xr-x 24 (hide) (hide) 4096 Dec 11 16:22 .. -rw-rw-r-- 1 (hide) (hide) 24271 Dec 6 15:57 – drwxrwxr-x 4 (hide) (hide) 4096 Sep 17 11:53 all drwxr-xr-x 3 (hide) (hide) 4096 Sep 17 11:54 default drwxrwxr-x 8 (hide) (hide) 4096 Dec 11 17:40 .git -rw-rw-r-- 1 (hide) (hide) 476 Sep 17 11:53 .gitignore -rw-rw-r-- 1 (hide) (hide) 81 Sep 17 11:53 README.md This "-" file cannot be opened and does not appear to be a symlink, although when I execute "cd -" I get this: -sh-4.1$ cd - /home/sites/dev1.(hide).com That is coincidentally or not the users home directory, and the site's root directory. The other strange this is this entry does not show up for any other user browsing this same directory. Nor does it show up for other users period in their Git directories. The entry cannot be removed via RM. Running Centos 6.2 by the way...

• Websphere SSL handshake with active directory cluster

  We have a WebSphere based application that uses Active Directory(AD) based security configurations. Under WebSphere "Global security" we have configured the active directory server and connection parameters. Active directory server is actually a cluster of four servers, say, serverdc01, serverdc02,serverdc03 and serverdc04. Each of these servers have their own root certificate with CN=serverdc01, CN=serverdc02 ..so on. So to set up SSL communication, I need to retrieve certificate of active directory and save it in WebSphere's trust store. When I retrieve certificate by putting AD server name, port and retrieve certificate I randomly get certificate of one of the serverdc01,serverdc02 ... Then I save that certificate to trust store. Question is : Do I have to save certificate from each of the serverdc01,serverdc02 ...in cluster to WebSphere's trust store? What are general strategies so that each server in the cluster does not require its own root certificate?

• Allowing XP Home Clients To Access Active Directory Printers

  My school's network is based on Active Directory on Windows Server 2003 servers. Most of the computers in the school are members of the domain. However, we also acquired a passel of netbooks that are running Windows XP Home (as netbooks tend to), and we're trying to make those useful. The netbooks are made available to students by check-out, so none of them are dedicated to a specific user. I only want to allow the netbooks to do two significant network activities: to access the Internet (this is working acceptably well so far), and to print to one or more printers on the network. That second one is where trouble starts. I'm trying to find a way to allow the XP Home clients to access those Active Directory printers. All the solutions that I can come up with right now are expensive, ugly, or both - for example, changing the OS on the netbooks (even with imaging, that would take a lot of my time) or making sure that the user account on each netbook has a matching account in Active Directory with permissions for printing (invites security/maintainability disaster). Are there any elegant solutions? Failing that, what's the best ugly solution for allowing my students to print from the netbooks?

  I have sent the following question to stackoverflow website I have installed Windows server 2008 r2 on a virtual machine, Can I install Active directory with domain controller + IIS + SQL server on the same machine? I want to make web application and this web application will authenticate users from Active Directory, the web application should be published on the server IIS and the users should access it remotely from their home using domain name of my machine, Someone tell me that its very wrong to have IIS and Active directory on the same machine I got the following Answer You can't use ActiveDirectory over the internet. At least not without something like a VPN as a middle man. Their home computers will not be joined to the domain, so there is no pass-through authentication. Yes, it's a bad idea to put AD on the web server. Why is too complex to get into in an answer here. Suffice it to say that even if you did do this, it's probably would not work the way you are thinking it should. It's not impossible to do this. For instance, many of the Microsoft "Small Businesss" products put IIS, AD, and SQL Server on the same server. But, you kind of have to know what you're doing to configure it securely. Then I add the following comment Thanks for ur reply.so what you think about the best way to do this as I didn't do anything like that before should I install active directory on a machine and IIS on another machine ? and what about SQL should I add it to the same server of active directory ? I didn't mentioned also that it will be Microsoft dynamics server that will access some information about work and i have to read data from axapta also ? also what is VPN and how can I use it to let users access my web application anywhere ? If then during that page load a deployment occurs, the system tries to include() a file using the original full path and will get the new version of that file. We need it to get the old one from the old dir which has now moved as in: System starts page load and determines SYSTEM_ROOT_PATH constant to be /home/[XXX]/var_www/live or by using PHP's realpath() it could be /home/[XXX]/php_code/current. Symlink for /home/[XXX]/var_www/live get updated to point to /home/[XXX]/php_code/previous instead of /home/[XXX]/php_code/current where it did originally. System tries to load /home/[XXX]/var_www/live/something.php and gets /home/[XXX]/php_code/current/something.php instead of /home/[XXX]/php_code/previous/something.php I'm sorry if that is not explained very well. I'd really appreciate some ideas on how to get around this problem if someone can. Thank you.

• Start TLS and 389 Directory

  I'm trying to configure Start TLS on 389 Directory server, but I'm having all sorts of issues. I've been following this doc: https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Directory_Server/9.0/html/Administration_Guide/managing-certs.html which specifies that I should create a certificate for both the directory server and admin server. I've imported the CA cert on both servers. I've tried to use the same server certificate for both. It will not allow me to do so. However, the admin and directory servers reside on the same host. If I generate a new certificate it will need to use the same hostname. I'm not sure if that's valid... Has anyone out there set this up before? Any direction would be helpful. I have multmaster replication set up. From an external client, I'm attempting to do an ldapsearch -ZZ -x -h "myhost" -b "dc=example,dc=com" -D "cn=Directory Manager" -W "", and I'm getting a protocol error.

• Migrate active directory to Google apps for business

  I've got a problem migrating active directory to Gapps. I'm stuck on google apps directory sync (GADS) where it just gives the error "java.lang.NullPointerException" after testing the connection during the LDAP configuration step. I checked the logs and I've pretty much determined that port 389 (standard LDAP port) isn't listening on the exchange server. I've tried telneting to it (from another machine in the same network) with no luck but I can telnet to other ports, that i know are open, successfully. I know they're open because I used portqry and netstat to see them. I'm suspecting that the active directory isn't even installed/running on this machine because there's no active directory services at all running on it. There's no active directory services that say they're NOT running either though. Is it possible AD is installed somewhere else? does it have to be on a machine inside the same network? I found the domain controller and it's host name and when I telnet with port 389, it works however GADS still gives me the same exact error when I substitute that server in. Actually, no matter what ridiculous settings i put into GADS, i still get that same NullPointer error. If i could get some different error than that NullPointer, i'd call that a successful day.
