  • Windows 8 login with Live ID without local account

    We have just got Windows 8 Release Preview installed in our offices. We wanted to open it up for viewing to the public and I'd like to know if there is a way to let people log in with their Windows Live ID without having to set up a user account for them beforehand? What we are after is a user being able to walk up to the PC, type in their Windows Live ID and password, and they're logged in as a default user. Is this doable in Windows 8, and if so, how?

  • Live Mesh starts exactly once on fresh Win7 Ultimate installation

    I did a fresh install of Windows 7 Ulimate 64-bit on a formatted drive on a refurbed Lenovo PC, applied all 102 (!) windows updates, windows seems to be working fine. No quirks installing, no apps, no junkware, just straight, legal, Win7 Ultimate right from an unopened 2009 Microsoft box. Ok, breathe sigh -- Install Live Mesh (no messenger, no mail, no writer, no photo, none of the rest of the Windows Live freeware). Set up my shares, let it run overnight. watch MOE.exe in the Task-Manager perf pane to make sure it's all settled down. reboot. Ok, check that MOE is running and files are getting updated properly from other machines in the mesh. Great. HOWEVER -- when I try to launch Windows Live Mesh app from the Start jewel, I get a brief hourglass, then nothing. Reboot. Same story. result -- the shares I already posted seem to be synching properly, but I can't run the app, so I can't add and delete shares. The background process MOE seems to run, but I can't get the app going. btw, the reason I did this fresh install is I had exactly the same experience running Vista, so I wiped the machine hoping it would solve this nasty problem. Imagine my surprise! Will be grateful for clues, advice, etc, please & thanks!

    [PROBLEM] Hello everyone. I have a small issue here. We are trying to get our exchange accounts for students only ported over from an exchange server 2003 to the Microsoft cloud services known as live @ EDU. The problem we are having is that in order to do this we need to install 2 pieces of software 1: OLSync 2: Microsoft Identity Life cycle Manager "Download the Galsync.msi here" the "Here" link takes you to a page that needs a login for an admin account for live @ EDU. That part works. However once logged in it redirects to a page that states: https://connect.microsoft.com/site185/Downloads/DownloadDetails.aspx?DownloadID=26407 Page Not Found The content that you requested cannot be found or you do not have permission to view it. If you believe you have reached this page in error, click the Help link at the top of the page to report the issue and include this ID in your e-mail: afa16bf4-3df0-437c-893a-8005f978c96c [WHAT I NEED] I need to download that file. Does anyone know of an alternative location for that installation file? I also need to obtain Identity Lifecycle Management (ILM) Server 2007, Feature Pack 1 (FP1). If anyone has any helpful information that would be fantastic! As well if anyone has completed a migration of account from a on site exchange 2003 server to the Microsoft Live @ EDU servers any general guidance would be helpful! Thanks in advance.

  • Edit the Windows Live Writer Custom Dictionary

    Windows Live Writer is a great tool for writing and publishing posts to your blog, but its spell check unfortunately doesn’t include many common tech words.  Here’s how you can easily edit your custom dictionary and add your favorite words. Customize Live Writer’s Dictionary Adding an individual word to the Windows Live Writer dictionary works as you would expect.  Right-click on a word and select Add to dictionary. And changing the default spell check settings is easy too.  In the menu, click Tools, then Options, and select the Spelling tab in this dialog.  Here you can choose your dictionary language and turn on/off real-time spell checking and other settings. But there’s no obvious way to edit your custom dictionary.  Editing the custom dictionary directly is nice if you accidently add a misspelled word to your dictionary and want to remove it, or if you want to add a lot of words to the dictionary at once. Live Writer actually stores your custom dictionary entries in a plain text file located in your appdata folder.  It is saved as User.dic in the C:\Users\user_name\AppData\Roaming\Windows Live Writer\Dictionaries folder.  The easiest way to open the custom dictionary is to enter the following in the Run box or the address bar of an Explorer window: %appdata%\Windows Live Writer\Dictionaries\User.dic   This will open the User.dic file in your default text editor.  Add any new words to the custom dictionary on separate lines, and delete any misspelled words you accidently added to the dictionary.   Microsoft Office Word also stores its custom dictionary in a plain text file.  If you already have lots of custom words in it and want to import them into Live Writer, enter the following in the Run command or Explorer’s address bar to open Word’s custom dictionary.  Then copy the words, and past them into your Live Writer custom dictionary file. %AppData%\Microsoft\UProof\Custom.dic Don’t forget to save the changes when you’re done.  Note that the changes to the dictionary may not show up in Live Writer’s spell check until you restart the program.  If it’s currently running, save any posts you’re working on, exit, and then reopen, and all of your new words should be in the dictionary. Conclusion Whether you use Live Writer daily in your job or occasionally post an update to a personal blog, adding your own custom words to the dictionary can save you a lot of time and frustration in editing.  Plus, if you’ve accidently added a misspelled word to the dictionary, this is a great way to undo your mistake and make sure your spelling is up to par!   • jquery .live() event interactions

    Let's say I have a scenario where I have a global plugin (or at least a plugin that binds to a wider array of events). This plugin takes a selector, and binds a live click to it. Something in pseudo-jquery that might look like this: $.fn.changeSomething = function(){ $(this).live("change", function(){ alert("yo");}); } On another page, I have an additional live binding something like this: $("input[type='checkbox']").live("click", function(){alert("ho");}); Within this scenario, the checkbox would ideally end up being bound to both live events. What I'm seeing is that the change event fires as it should, and I'm alerted "yo". However, using this live click event, I never trigger it. However, using an explicit click binding, I DO hit it. The easy workaround is to trigger a click event at the end of the live change handler, but this seems janky to me. Any ideas? Note that this is using jquery 1.4.2 and only occurs in IE8 (I supposed 6/7 would too, but I haven't tested them).

    Hi, I'm interested in booting-off-flash (i.e. like livecd) for more secure online banking at home. -I like system rescue CD, but AFAIK it doesn't have the wifi drivers. (These are convenient) -ubuntu live cd has the wi-fi drivers, but also has a lot of stuff I don't need -I'd like a way to save some basic config settings (e.g. wifi SSID and passphrase), so that wifi works upon startup, i.e. without having to re-enter the settings. What's the best way to 'roll my own slightly-customized boot-from-flash live cd? thanks, bill

  • Sign out of Windows Live Messenger remotely

    I just upgraded Windows Live Messenger at home. I'm logged into my machine at work so I have a Live session active there too. Now the fun part. This new version of messenger is signing me out after about 2 minutes, and saying "You were signed out from here because you signed in to a version of Messenger that doesn't let you sign in at more than on place" Ok, so I went into the options on my home machine and selected "Sign me out at all other locations". Is there another way I can force my office machine to logout remotely, as either this option does not work, or the machine in my office just keeps reconnecting. Version 2009 14.0.8089.726 EDIT: Actually this problem went away after a few hours; I guess some kind of server side timeout kicked in.

  • Cannot uninstall Office Live Add-in 1.4 after installing Office 2010

    Last night I upgraded to Office 2010 RTM from MSDN. I'm now trying to uninstall the Office Live Add-in that I used with Office 2007 as this functionality is built in to Office 2010. When I run the uninstall from control panel I get the following message: Microsoft Office Live Add-in cannot be installed because you do not have the right version of Microsoft Office installed on your computer Google has pointed to 2 solutions, both of which are pretty useless: Use the MS Windows Installer Cleanup - this is not good because all it does is remove the Installer entry from the registry, leaving all the installed files behind Uninstall Office 2010, uninstall Add-in, reinstall Office 2010 - that is just rediculous, but typical MS response So, can I get this off my system without resorting to option 2?

  • Windows Live Messenger giving me 8100030d on sign-in

    I'll bullet point things of note: Other accounts work on the same machine. This is a problem across a few machines. I can sign in no problem on some machines. I can use Web Messenger on the problem machines. I'm using the latest version of Messenger. I've uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled, rebooted. Deleting the "Windows Live Contacts" folder doesn't help. Deleting the Contacts registry entries doesn't work. I'm not using AVG (and besides, can sign in with other accounts) It successfully connects (and signs me out of eBuddy) before erroring. It creates files in the Windows Live Contacts folder. Windows XP running on the problem machines. I'm not sure what other things it could be... This has also been asked at http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Internet_Email/Chat_-_IM/Q_25449997.html, so let's see which system gets me the better response...

  • Windows Live Family Safety Service keeps closing Start Menu

    Got my kids a new Toshiba Laptop for Christmas. I was setting it all up for them so it would be ready to go. Tonight I installed Windows Live Family Safety Parental Controls. In the process of testing I discovered that on all the accounts the Start Menu closes automatically within 3 seconds (or less) of opening. It seems that it happens every 3 seconds, so sometimes it is immediate, and if I open it again then it will stay open for a full 3 seconds. This of course is rather annoying, and I need to wrap it up so it is ready to go under the tree. I disabled the Windows Live Family Safety Service, and that fixed it. Enable it again and the behavior returns. Is this a feature of the service? Can I disable that feature and keep the other features?

    Hello, Recently I'm trying the Window Live Mail client. Simple and beautiful. I have set up an IMAP account, and I'm used that a client only downloads headers. However Windows Live Mail automatically creates a list of tasks to download all messages from all directories when you are closing the client. Is it possible to avoid this? It's a good and a bad thing. You can work offline and you have a backup, but it takes extremely long to perform, in fact I have about hundred of thousand of emails. This task can take a whole day to perform. After looking in the settings I don't see anything special, maybe you have an idea? Thank you Mike

  • Enable live streaming on website

    I have a server colocated in a datacentre (dedicated 1Gbit line, SSDs, etc.) running CentOS 5.4 64-bit. I want to stream live video from a device (webcam, camcorder, whatever.) to my server which inturn can re-broadcast it on demand through a flash player (such as Flowplayer) so that more users will be able to watch the stream since the server is quite fast. Does a solution like this exist already (streaming software from live source to flash media server) or will I need to hire someone to code it? I see that VLC has an option to stream video.. will that be suitable in this case? Or is there a better way to do it? I don't want a browser based solution on my end. It'll be great if this can be done without running an X server but I don't mind either way. This will be running on a dedicated PC at home.

    I have a server machine with a dvd-writer. I want to burn a linux live-dvd (openSUSE is preferred) with a pre-configured web server, so that after booting the web server should be ready to serve. The web server has a sqlite database (with very less data). But after rebooting the system, all data in the database will get lost. Is it possible to store all necessary data onto this live-dvd as well? If it were a usb drive. I would create two partition and mount the second partition with read-write permission. But I have no idea how to create two partition onto a dvd Any hint is appreciated

  • Turn Photos and Home Videos into Movies with Windows Live Movie Maker

    Are you looking for an easy way to take your digital photos and videos and turn them into a movie or slideshow? Today we’ll take a detailed look at how to do use Windows Live Movie Maker. Installation Windows Live Movie Maker comes bundled as part of the Windows Live Essentials suite (link below). However, you don’t have to install any of the programs you may not want. Take notice of the You’re almost done screen. Before clicking Continue, be sure to uncheck the boxes to set your search provider and homepage. Adding Pictures and Videos Open Windows Live Movie Maker. You can add videos or photos by simply dragging and dropping them onto the storyboard area. You can also click on the storyboard area or on the Add videos and photos button on the Home tab to browse for videos and photos. Windows Live Movie Maker supports most video, image, and audio file types. Select your files and add click Open to add them to Windows Live Movie Maker. By default WLMM doesn’t allow you to add files from network locations…so check out our article on how to add network support to Windows Live MovieMaker if the files you want to add are on a network drive. Layout All of your added clips will appear in the storyboard area on the right, while the currently selected clip will appear in the preview window on the left. You can adjust the size of the two areas by clicking and dragging the dividing line in the middle.    Make the clips on the storyboard bigger or smaller by clicking on the thumbnail size icon. The slider at the lower right adjusts the zoom time scale.   Previewing your Movie At any time, you can playback your movie and preview how it will look in the Preview window by clicking the space bar, or by pushing the play button under the preview window. You can also manually move the preview bar slider across the storyboard to view the clips as the video progresses. Adjusting Clips on the Storyboard You can click and drag clips on the storyboard to change the order in which the photos and videos appear.   Adding Music Nothing brings a movie to life quite like music. Selecting Add music will add your music to the beginning of the movie. Select Add music at the current point to include it in the movie to the current location of your preview bar slider, then browse for your music clip. WLMM supports many common audio files such as WAV, MP3, M4A, WMA, AIFF, and ASF. The music clip will appear above the video / photos clips on the storyboard.   You can change the location of music clips by clicking and dragging them to a different location on the storyboard. Add Titles, Captions, and Credits To add a Title screen to your movie, click the Title button on the Home tab. Type your title directly into the text box on the preview screen. The title will be placed at the location of the preview slider on the storyboard. However, you can change the location by clicking and dragging title to other areas of the storyboard. On the Format tab, there are a handful of text settings. You can change the font, color, size, alignment,  and transparency. The Adjust group allows you to change the background color, edit the text, and set the length of time the Title will appear in the movie.   The Effects group on the Format tab allows you to select an effect for your title screen. By hovering your cursor over each option, you will get a live preview of how each effect will appear in the preview window. Click to apply any of the effects. For captions, select where you want your caption to appear with the preview slider on the storyboard, then click the captions button on the Home tab. Just like the title, you type your caption directly into the text box on the preview screen, and you can make any adjustments by using the Font and Paragraph, Adjust, and Effects groups above. Credits are done the same as titles and captions, except they are automatically placed at the end of the movie.   Transitions Go to the Animation tab on the ribbon to apply transitions. Select a clip from the storyboard and hover over one of the transition to see it in the preview window. Click on the transition to apply it to the clip. You can apply transitions separately to clips or hold down Ctrl button while clicking to select multiple clips to which to apply the same transition. Pan and zoom effects are also located on the Animations tab, but can be applied to photos only. Like transition, you can apply them individually to a clip or hold down Ctrl button while clicking to select multiple clips to which to apply the same pan and zoom effect. Once applied, you can adjust the duration of the transitions and pan and zoom effects. You can also click the dropdown for additional transitions or effects. Visual Effects Similar to Pan and Zoom and Transitions, you can apply a variety of Visual Effects to individual or multiple clips. Editing Video and Music Note: This does not actually edit the original video you imported into your Windows Live Movie Maker project, only how it appears in your WLMM project. There are some very basic editing tools located on the Home tab. The Rotate left and Rotate right button will adjust any clip that may be oriented incorrectly. The Fit to music button will automatically adjust the duration of the photos (if you have any in your project) to fit the length of the music in your movie. Audio mix allows you to change the volume level   You can also do some slightly more advanced editing from the Edit tab. Select the video clip on the storyboard and click the Trim tool to edit or remove portions of a video clip. Next, click and drag the sliders in the preview windows to select the are you wish to keep. For example, the area outside the sliders is the area trimmed from the movie. The area inside is the section that is kept in the movie. You can also adjust the Start and End points manually on the ribbon.   When you are finished, click Save trim. You can also split your video clips. Move the preview slider to the location in the video clip where you’d like to split it, and select Split. Your video will be split into separate sections. Now you can apply different effects or move them to different locations on the storyboard. Editing Music Clips Select the music clip on the storyboard and then the Options tab on the ribbon. You can adjust the music volume by moving the slider right and left.   You can also choose to have your music clip fade in or out at the beginning and end of your movie. From the Fade in and Fade out dropdowns, select None, Slow, Medium, or Fast. To adjust the sound of your audio clips, click on the Edit tab, select the Video volume button, and adjust the slider. Move it all the way to the left to mute any background noise in your video clips.   AutoMovie As you have seen, Windows Live Movie Maker allows you to add effects, transitions, titles, and more. If you don’t want to do any of that stuff yourself, AutoMovie will automatically add title, credits, cross fade transitions between items, pan and zoom effects to photos, and fit your project to the music. Just select the AutoMovie button on the Home tab. You can go from zero to movie in literally a couple minutes.   Uploading to YouTube You can share your video on YouTube directly from Windows Live Movie Maker. Click on the YouTube icon in the Sharing group on the Home tab. You’ll be prompted for your YouTube username and password. Fill in the details about your movie and click Publish. The movie will be converted to WMV before being uploaded to YouTube. As soon as the YouTube conversion is complete, you’re new movie is live and ready to be viewed. Saving your Movie as a Video File Select the icon at the top left, then select Save movie. As you hover your mouse over each of the options, you will see the output display size, aspect ratio, and estimated file size per minute of video. All of these settings will output your movie as a WMV file. (Unfortunately, the only option is to save a movie as a WMV file.) The only difference is how they are encoded based on preset common settings. The Burn to DVD option also outputs a WMV file, but then opens Windows DVD Maker and walks you through the process of creating and burning a DVD.   If you choose the Burn to DVD option, close this window when the WMV file conversion is complete and the Windows DVD Maker will prompt you to begin. When your movie is finished, it’s time to relax and enjoy.   Conclusion Windows Live Movie Maker makes it easy for the average person to quickly churn out nice looking movies and slideshows from there own pictures and videos. However, long time users of previous editions (formerly called Windows Movie Maker) will likely be disappointed by some features missing in Windows Live Movie Maker that existed in earlier editions.   • What are unique aspects of a software Lifecycle of an attack/tool on a software vulnerability?

    At my local university, there is a small student computing club of about 20 students. The club has several small teams with specific areas of focus, such as mobile development, robotics, game development, and hacking / security. I am introducing some basic agile development concepts to a couple of the teams, such as user stories, estimating complexity of tasks, and continuous integration for version control and automated builds/testing. I am familiar with some basic development life-cycles, such as waterfall, spiral, RUP, agile, etc., but I am wondering if there is such a thing as a software development life-cycle for hacking / breaching security. Surely, hackers are writing computer code, but what is the life-cycle of that code? I don't think that they would be too concerned with maintenance, as once the breach has been found and patched, the code that exploited that breach is useless. I imagine the life-cycle would be something like: Find gap in security Exploit gap in security Procure payload Utilize payload What kind of differences (if any) are there for the development life-cycle of software when the purpose of the product is to breach security?

  • Empathy 3.6.0 requires reauthorisation to Windows Live on every reboot

    I've been testing Ubuntu 12.10 beta2 and the only problem I've faced has been that with Windows Live Messenger(a.k.a MSN) After I have added Windows Live in the online-accounts in system settings, empathy works fine and connects to Windows Live Messenger with no problems until I reboot my system. After rebooting and logging in, when empathy connects to services it shows me message "Windows Live account requires authorisation" next to it is a button that takes me back to online-accounts where i can see the authorized Windows Live. So far the only way to get MSN work again has been to remove the Windows Live authorisation and add it again, which makes it work till the next time i close my computer. How could i make empathy to remember the authorisation to Windows Live

    I've searched everywhere, but I can't seem to find any help... I have some textboxes that are created dynamically via JS, so I need to bind all of their classes to an autocomplete. As a result, I need to use the new .live() option. As an example, to bind all items with a class of .foo now and future created: $('.foo').live('click', function(){ alert('clicked'); }); It takes (and behaves) the same as .bind(). However, I want to bind an autocomplete... This doesn't work: $('.foo').live('autocomplete', function(event, ui){ source: 'url.php' // (surpressed other arguments) }); How can I use .live() to bind autocomplete? UPDATE Figured it out with Framer: $(function(){ $('.search').live('keyup.autocomplete', function(){ $(this).autocomplete({ source : 'url.php' }); }); });

  • Assembling Software RAID in Live CD for data recovery

    I need help recovering some data that's on my RAID which is on a LVM on my server running Ubuntu. What happened was I deleted the logical volume that controlled my swap space which was on a partition on drives sda2, sdb2, sdc2, and sdd2 in RAID1. This foobared my whole system for one reason or another. Booting leave me with grub rescue and an error saying that it is an unknown filesystem. When I boot to a live cd I can see my RAID arrays and I can even start them up. However, it doesn't appear to mount them anywhere so I can't see the data. I am in the live cd now and I have done sudo apt-get install mdadm lvm2 so it should be mounting them correctly. I just can't see why it wouldn't. Please any help is appreciated here.   • CentOS Live CD Creation issues

    I am creating my customized CentOS 6.3 Live CD. I am following information given at https://projects.centos.org/trac/livecd/wiki/GetToolset My "livecd-creator" command completes successfully and an ISO image is created. But when I try to boot up my system with this ISO, it goes up to the CentOS blue screen and then the CAPS lock and Scroll Lock LEDs on the keyboard starts flashing. Then from here after, the system takes no input from keyboard and I have to power cycle it and it does the same thing. Could you get me any suggestion why this is causing and possible workaround. Thanks.
