• Is wrapping a third party code the only solution to unit test its consumers? [closed]

  I'm doing unit testing and in one of my classes I need to send a mail from one of the methods, so using constructor injection I inject an instance of Zend_Mail class which is in Zend framework. Now some people argue that if a library is stable enough and won't change often then there is no need to wrap it. So assuming that Zend_Mail is stable and won't change and it fits my needs entirely, then I won't need a wrapper for it. Now take a look at my class Logger that depends on Zend_Mail: class Logger{ private $mailer; function __construct(Zend_Mail $mail){ $this->mail=$mail; } function toBeTestedFunction(){ //Some code $this->mail->setTo('some value'); $this->mail->setSubject('some value'); $this->mail->setBody('some value'); $this->mail->send(); //Some } } However, Unit testing demands that I test one component at a time, so I need to mock the Zend_Mail class. In addition I'm violating the Dependency Inversion principle as my Logger class now depends on concretion not abstraction. Now is wrapping Zend_Mail the only solution or is there a better approach to this problem? The code is in PHP, but answers doesn't have to be. This is more of a design issue than a language specific feature

• Ubuntu server has slow performance

  I have a custom built Ubuntu 11.04 server with a 6 disk software RAID 10 primary drive. On it I'm primarily running a PostgreSQL and a few other utilities that stream data from the web. I often find after a few hours of uptime the server starts to lag with all kinds of processes. For example, it may take 10-15 seconds after log-in to get a shell prompt. It might take 5-10 seconds for top to come up. An ls might take a second or two. When I look at top there is almost no CPU usage. There's a fair amount of memory used by the PostgreSQL server but not enough to bleed into swap. I have no idea where to go from here, other than to suspect the RAID10 (I've only ever had software RAID 1's before). • Why is SwiftMailer throwing "Internal Server Error"?

  I am using Symfony + SwiftMailer and getting the following error from SwiftMailer: 500 | Internal Server Error | Swift_TransportException Expected response code 220 but got code "", with message "" and can't figure out why. I am using hMailServer on my local machine, and have setup my factories.yml file (as I'm using Symfony) as follows: mailer: class: sfMailer param: logging: %SF_LOGGING_ENABLED% charset: %SF_CHARSET% delivery_strategy: realtime transport: class: Swift_SmtpTransport param: host: splodge.loc port: 25 encryption: ~ username: ~ password: ~ I'm using the following code to send: $message = $this->getMailer()->compose( '[email protected]', '[email protected]', 'Reset Password', 'Message' ); $result = $this->getMailer()->send($message); Has anyone had an issue like this before? I have found that sometimes, and very randomly, the send goes through, but every other time, I get the above error message. So constantly refreshing the page that sends the mail, fails unpredictably, and as the code sometimes works, it's kinda hard to figure out what's wrong. Any help will be highly appreciated!

• rails arguments to after_save observer

  Hi, I want users to enter a comma-delimited list of logins on the form, to be notified by email when a new comment/post is created. I don't want to store this list in the database so I would use a form_tag_helper 'text_area_tag' instead of a form helper text_field. I have an 'after_save' observer which should send an email when the comment/post is created. As far as I am aware, the after_save event only takes the model object as the argument, so how do I pass this non model backed list of logins to the observer to be passed on to the Mailer method that uses them in the cc list. thanks

• Have Rails 2.3.x ignore the i18n gem

  I have a Rails 2.3.5 project that uses the localization features of Rails. I also happen to have Rails 3 beta installed (which depends on the i18n gem). Rails 2.3.5 will happily handle localization on it's own (without i18n installed), however if the i18n gem is available, it makes use of it. Recently I upgraded my gems and now have version 0.3.7 and 0.4.0 of i18n installed. Rails, of course, wants to load and use the latest version which is causing errors in my project. I tried setting the gem version to 0.3.7 which gets around the errors in the web app. However, we're using resque and resque_mailer to delay the sending of messages. When the worker picks up the mailer job from the queue, it ignores my config.gem requirement in environment.rb and uses version 0.4.0 anyway. Ideally, I'd like to tell Rails to just not use the i18n gem at all. How do I do that?

By just removing it, I'm getting the desired effect - but WHY?!

• A couple problems re: CodeIgniter emailer

  I have some problems with the email system for CodeIgniter: First, the emails I send out (registration, confirmations) are getting caught in standard spam filters in gmail and other mail clients. How do I get around this? How do companies like Facebook get their emails through consistently? Second, the mailer is working locally but once we deploy it it no longer runs (doesn't send emails) but all the other forms run just fine. Anyone ever run into a problem like this? • Send mass emails php (probably a shell question?)

  I've got 80,000 users on my site and i've recently turned away from the forum script i've been using and built something very simple myself that works just as well (the forum script was too bloated and resource intensive for my simple site) The only thing i've lost is the ability to mass email all my members. So i'm looking to come up with a script to do it myself. After looking around (including questions on here) I decided using Swift Mailer would be a good idea. However i've been through all the documentation and can't see how to send say "100 at a time" and i'm not sure how to go about it. To put it simply. I have an admin panel with a form with two inputs "subject" and "message". When I click submit what is the safest way for me to send 80,000 emails without crashing my server or being marked as spam? I'm on quite a beefy dedicated server so don't have the problems associated with shared servers. Thanks in advance for any advice!

  Hello I have a setup of exim4 on domain1 in front of other server, domain2 (with sendmail). Second server have no direct access to internet, so domain1 is MX for domain2. And domain2 is set as hubbed_host in the exim4 on domain1. When spammer sends message for no_such_user@domain2, its sendmail do a reject: 550 5.1.1 <no_such_user@domain2>... User unknown Then, exim4 at domain1 do an auto-reply like this: This message was created automatically by mail delivery software. A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed: no_such_user@domain2 SMTP error from remote mail server after RCPT TO:<no_such_user@domain2>: host 10.0.0.1 [10.0.0.1]: 550 5.1.1 <no_such_user@domain2>... User unknown The spammers uses fake "from" field, and such generated messages are frozen by exim for a long time. How can I disable some or all autoreplies from exim4? Ideally, I want a filter, if message was not delivered with error "User unknown" than don't generate any autoreply from mailer-daemon. Thanks!

• Sendmail delivering locally instead of to MTA in MX record

  Ok, so I've got a box named websrv1.mydomain.com. It's a web server running ubuntu, apache2, sendmail, etc. My email is outsourced to a third party. So in my DNS I've got MX set to mx.thirdparty.net. I've no reason to accept incoming mail on my web server, every email should be sent to the third party. This works correctly accept with sending mail from the webserver (aka via cron or console). So from my web server, if I send an email to [email protected], it just disappears. No errors, nothing in dead.letter, nothing. I can send to any other address with no issues. If I send to [email protected] it's delivered locally which is fine. 1) Doing an nslookup shows the mx record is correct. 2) Running /mx mydomain.com from sendmail -bt returns the correct result. 3) Running sendmail -bv [email protected] returns: sudo sendmail -bv [email protected] [email protected]... deliverable: mailer esmtp, host mydomain.com., user [email protected] 4) Running 3,0 [email protected], returns: 3,0 [email protected] canonify input: me @ mydomain . com Canonify2 input: me Canonify2 returns: me canonify returns: me parse input: me Parse0 input: me Parse0 returns: me Parse1 input: me MailerToTriple input: me MailerToTriple returns: me Parse1 returns: $# esmtp $@ mydomain . com . $: me parse returns: $# esmtp $@ mydomain . com . $: me So I'm at a loss. • When using procmail with maildir, it returns error with code I found

  I'm not an expert at procmail, but I have this code: DROPPRIVS=yes DEFAULT=$HOME/Maildir/ :0 * ? /usr/bin/test -d $DEFAULT || /bin/mkdir $DEFAULT { } :0 E { # Bail out if directory could not be created EXITCODE=127 HOST=bail.out } MAILDIR=$HOME/Maildir/ But, when the directory already exists, sometimes it will send a return email with this error: 554 5.3.0 unknown mailer error 127. The email still gets delivered, mind you, but it sends back an error code. I fixed this temporarily by commenting out the EXITCODE and HOST lines, but I'd like to know if there is a better solution. I found this block of code in multiple places across the net, but couldn't really find why this error was coming back to me. It seems to happen when I send an email to a local user, sometimes the user has a .forward file to send it on to other users, sometimes not, but the result has been the same. I also tried removing DROPPRIVS, just in case it was messing up the forwarding, but it did not seem to affect it. Is the line starting with * ? /usr/bin/test a problem? The * signifies a regex, but the ? makes it return an integer value, correct? What is the integer being matched against? Or is it just comparing the integer return value? Thanks for the help.
