a java applet question

Hello there. I have a question on the java applet.I've created a java applet,which is a board game,that can have a 2*2 array with row number and column number both set to 9 by default. Now I want to extend my applet a bit,that the user can specify the size they want on the command-line,then the applet class will create an applet with correspoding size. I try to add a constructor in the applet class,but the Eclipse complains,I also tried another class,which will create an instance of this applet with size as an instance variable,but it is not working. Could anyone help me a little bit on where to put a main() method that can take care of user-specified board sized,then create an array in my applet class accordingly? Thanks a lot. Rob

Simple Java Sound Applet won't work!!! ARG!!!

No keyring secrets found for [ssid] /802-11-wireless-security, ubuntu 12.04

I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 x64bit, installed it couple of days ago. The issue i'm having is this: on startup it connects to my wireless without a problem, but after a while I am disconnected and prompted to enter the key for the wireless network (which is entered - saved) so i just click 'ok', but wireless doesn't connect again. Reseting network manager doesn't help either. Only restart, after which, ubuntu connects to the said wireless without a problem. Terminal outputs this error message: ** Message: No keyring secrets found for cimermanovic /802-11-wireless-security; asking user. cimermanovic is the ssid name. also, here are some error messages that network manager is giving: (nm-applet:31926): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_scale_simple: assertion `dest_width 0' failed (nm-applet:31693): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_scale_simple: assertion `dest_width 0' failed (nm-applet:30184): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_scale_simple: assertion `dest_width 0' failed What should i do to fix this? Failed to compile Network Manager 0.9.4

After upgrading to 12.04 I needed to re-compile Network Manager to the version 0.9.4.0 again. However with the version 9.4.0 I faced with the error during compilation with libdns-manager: $ make ... Disk mounter applet for Unity?

Well - just because I cannot find this asked anywhere else on the net - is there something like a "Disk Mounter" applet for Unity interface, or are there any alternatives? (By 'alternatives' I mean: I wouldn't mind doubleclicking an icon, and have what used to be a toolbar applet start up as a separate window; as long as don't have to grapple with mount command lines, and filesystem arguments and such) Thanks, Cheers!

Indicator applet-less applications?

Since I heard that indicator applets are going to replace the notification area, I wondered what was going to happen to applications that use the notification area and don't have an indicator applet? Is the Ubuntu team going to write an indicator applet for every application out there? You can't expect the developers of applications to add that Ubuntu-only task to their list. Don't get me wrong, I love the indicator applets. But I'm a little concerned about this.

Gnome- vs Unity-panel (applet) compatibility?

I just love the indicator-applet and other parts of the Ayatana-project and think Ubuntu has done an awesome job there. And as the question about applet compatibility seem to be answered as a 'no' I'd like to take the question to the next level - the 'why' and 'why not'. How come these Ayatana-applets today work in gnome-panel but gnome applets won't work in the Unity panel? And - as it's connected - why not make them compatible? Isn't it all about usability?

Can't add NetworkManager applet to gnome panel

I have researched this problem extensively and I can't seem to find an answer. In Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, I want to connect to my VPN through the NetworkManager applet. I installed all the network manager packages, including the gnome client. I understand I need to add the "Notification Area" to the panel, which I have done. I checked that the NetworkManager is running: nate@nate-desktop:~$ service network-manager status network-manager start/running, process 763 In /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf, I have added managed=true (don't know if this matters, but I saw it suggested on one forum): nate@nate-desktop:~$ more /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf # This file is installed into /etc/NetworkManager, and is loaded by # NetworkManager by default. To override, specify: '--config file' # during NM startup. This can be done by appending to DAEMON_OPTS in # the file: # # /etc/default/NetworkManager # [main] plugins=ifupdown,keyfile [ifupdown] #managed=false managed=true I restarted NetworkManager and tried rebooting, too. At this point, it looks like NetworkManager is running but it's not appearing in the NotificationArea of the panel. I don't know what else to try. Any ideas?

Using the standard OBJECT tag, how can I display a java applet with automatic prompts to install Java and with fallback content?

When Java is not installed, IE and Firefox both correctly prompt for an autodownload of Java 1.6 from the codebase line. (IE via the activex url given firefox via the Plugin Finder Service) Now, suppose I want fallback content to be shown if the plugin isn't installed, say a simple message like "Get Java". From reading the specs, i'd assume this should not change the plugin finding prompt - that is, rendering the fallback should be seen as a failure to render the object tag. Thus, I should still get the plugin finder service prompting me to install Java. Instead, simply adding a single character to the innerHTML of the object element causes Firefox to no longer prompt. Test this by visiting data:text/html,<object type='application/x-java-applet'>Java failed to load</object>. How can I keep firefox prompting to install Java while providing fallback content? I would like to add a Java applet to the web page but I could not find the JSF component type to correspond to the <applet> tag. So My questions are - What is the JSF component type for an applet? Is it more secure to run a desktop app in a applet?

Fist of all, when I say "run a desktop app in a applet" I mean do a Applet application that runs off-line, instead of a Desktop application that runs inside a JFrame. The little I know about applets (and maybe something I say is wrong, please correct me) is that applets have all permitions not granted by default. Also, the applets run inside a Sandbox, that does not allow information in or out without explicity permition. So, if I am focused on security in my application, its best to run it inside an applet (off-line, for a desktop application) then inside a JFrame. Is it right?

I have a Gnome applet written in Python. In order to save configuration data/settings, it creates a file ~/.appname. However, this prevents multiple instances of the applet from being added to the panel because each cannot have its own settings. How can I store the settings in a way that allows each instance to have its own unique settings? Update: I specifically want to know how to store settings per instance.

In regards to applet games and UDP

I've got about a year in Java experience, and would like to set up a server and client for an applet game. However, there doesn't appear to be any tutorials out there on anything like I want to use. I would the server to be able to store an array of x and y coordinates with a player name somehow associated to them, and send them to multiple clients in a short time span. I would like the client implemented in the applet, and be able to request any player's position data. I'd like to use UDP, because it seems to be the best option for efficient (if less reliable) transmission of data. If anyone could give me some pointers on how to do such a project, or point me to an appropriate tutorial, I'd certainly appreciate it.

XFCE4 Empty Volume Control Applet

I just wanted to ask, what could I mess up? My situation is this: In XFCE4.10 (!) on the panel0 I put the Indicator Applet. It always showed me the volume control and network icons. When I updated to 13.10 and after cleaned some stuff, removed some orphaned package, I noticed, the volume control applet is showing mute and if I clicked on it there is an empty drowdown menu like 10x5 px.. Now it became completely useless. So my question is WHAT should I reinstall or change to get the control work?.. :/ Thanks.

How do I grant a site's applet an AllPermission privilege?

I'd like to specify certain applets to run with java.security.AllPermission on my computer (for debugging and security testing). However, I don't want to enable all applets that I run to have this permission. So, editing my user Java policy file (which I have ensured is the correct policy file through testing), I try to put this value: grant codeBase "http://host_where_applet_lives/-" { permission java.security.AllPermission; }; This value fails when the applet tries to do something powerful (create a new Thread, in my case). However, when I put the following value: grant { permission java.security.AllPermission; }; The applet is able to perform the powerful operation. The only difference is the lack of a codeBase attribute. An answer to a similar question asked here [1] seemed to suggest (but never show or prove) that AccessController.doPrivileged() calls may be required. To me, this sounds wrong as I don't need that call when I grant the permissions to all applets (the second example I showed). Even if this is a solution, littering the applets I run with AccessController.doPrivileged() calls is not easy or necessarily possible. To top it off, my tests show that this just doesn't work anyway. But I'm happy to hear more ideas around it. How do I install the old sensors-applet package?

I want to install sensors-applet onto my Ubuntu 12.04 computer. The instructions on this (and other) webpages says to enter this command in a command terminal: sudo apt-get install sensors-applet This is a gnome applet and gnome isn't exactly obscure. Why can sensors-applet package not be found? Before you say "no", note that I was able to execute "gnome-panel" to add a bar/panel along the bottom of my desktop, add 8 cpu-frequency applets to the bar (one per CPU core), and add gnome-panel to my startup applications. So I've already done the basics, and believe all I need now is to be able to download and install the sensors-applet to have that temperature applet available on the panel too. See here.

AWN displaying window icons even when Display Launchers Only selected

I'm using AWN with the DockbarX applet.I have Display Launchers Only checked in the awn dock properties, but I'm still getting window icons displaying for certain apps when they're open. Any ideas? Here's a screenshot, note the Firefox icon at the top of the bar (shaded icon) which is part of the DockbarX applet,then note it displaying again at the bottom of the bar (indicating an open window.) You can see from the Launchers list in the dock properties that it isn't in fact a launcher. (The Yahoo and Gmail launchers are standalone Prism apps, they don't use the FF Prism extension. And if I mouse over the bottom FF icon, it does display the title of the open Firefox window, not anything using Prism.) Any ideas?

How to display a new frame in an an applet?

Hello everyone, I have an applet. In this I have a JLabel component. When the user clicks this label, a new JFrame component gets displayed. I want to set the value of setDefaultCloseOperation() for this frame as JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE. However, I get a SecurityException if I do that. I read the documentation of JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE and its written that : The exit application default window close operation. If a window has this set as the close operation and is closed in an applet, a SecurityException may be thrown. It is recommended you only use this in an application. What I understood from the above is that if a frame is closed without specifying default close operation, the frame is only hidden. I want to close the frame when the user tries to close it, and not hide the frame. Is this possible?

Java: Reading a pdf file from URL into Byte array/ByteBuffer in an applet.

I'm trying to figure out why this particular snippet of code isn't working for me. I've got an applet which is supposed to read a .pdf and display it with a pdf-renderer library, but for some reason when I read in the .pdf files which sit on my server, they end up as being corrupt. I've tested it by writing the files back out again. I've tried viewing the applet in both IE and Firefox and the corrupt files occur. Funny thing is, when I trying viewing the applet in Safari (for Windows), the file is actually fine! I understand the JVM might be different, but I am still lost. I've compiled in Java 1.5. JVMs are 1.6. Edit: To further clarify my situation, the difference in the file before I read then with the snippet and after, is that the ones I output after reading are significantly smaller than they originally are. When opening them, they are not recognized as .pdf files. There are no exceptions being thrown that I ignore, and I have tried flushing to no avail. This snippet works in Safari, meaning the files are read in it's entirety, with no difference in size, and can be opened with any .pdf reader. In IE and Firefox, the files always end up being corrupted, consistently the same smaller size. I monitored the len variable (when reading a 59kb file), hoping to see how many bytes get read in at each loop. In IE and Firefox, at 18kb, the in.read(buf) returns a -1 as if the file has ended. Safari does not do this. I'll keep at it, and I appreciate all the suggestions so far.

New Session is created between consecutive servlet request from an Applet and a managed bean??

Hi, I want to pass parameters betweeen applet and jsf components So when a value of a input textbox changed, its binding backing bean makes connection to a servlet. The servlet create an attribute and save to HttpSession using (request.getSession(true)).setAttribute(name, value); Then at some event, applet will access another servlet. This servlet will try to retrieve the Attribute saved to Session previously. However, everytime, the attirbute returned is null as the new session is created instead. My question is: Is the session should be persist? ( I checked allowcookies, session timeout for weblogic) If yes, what might go wrong with my app? Thanks a lot for your help. Regards K.

Is it possible for a signed Java Applet or Web Start app to write to the DOM of an IFRAME under a different domain? Does the fact that they're a signed applet/javaws allow them to ignore browsers' standard cross-browser security? If this does work, how well is it supported across the major browsers? Thanks! EDIT: My motivation is to add a browser plugin-like tool to third-party websites I don't control. It's not required that I use Java at all---any ideas or suggestions are encouraged.
