• Disable or sleep secondary hard drive in Macbook

  I've done some quick Googling but didn't find an answer. I've put an SSD in my Macbook, and at the same time moved the original hard drive to the optical drive bay. I'm running the OS and most of my daily apps off the SDD so the hard drive is really just for storing stuff I need now and then. Now I'd like to disable (as in power off or "force sleep") the hard drive when I don't need it. Tried unmounting the disk using diskutil unmountDisk but it kept spinning for like 10 minutes. Maybe that's to be expected, but I'd imagined it would stop instantly on unmount. Also, it would be nice to have it disabled by default, and only mount it (= power on) when I need it.

• Windows 7 Locks Up or Blue Screens after installing additional hard drive

  I've had my home theater pc for over a year now and it's been running with no problems what so ever. I got myself a new Seagate 2 TB hard drive for the holidays and ever since installing it the pc now randomly locks up or blue screens either upon putting it to sleep or waking it from sleep. The only thing I've tried so far is updating the firmware on the hard drive. The hard drive in question is this one (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4846365). I do have my minidump file saved off on my home theater pc however right now I'm at work and don't have access to it. Please help! Thank you!

• Can't turn computer on after re-attaching hard drive

  I have an Eee PC 1008HA. A few days before I got a virus that was preventing the Windows to boot but I could turn the computer on. I opened (disassembled) the Eee PC, then disconnected the hard disk. I connected the hard disk to another computer and copied my files. When I connected again the hard disk to my Eee PC and closed (assembled) it , I cannot turn the Eee PC on. Even when I connect the wire for charging, neither the charging light nor any other lights light up.

• UPS for hard drive protection

  I am in a place where electricity is not ideal (old house, no ground), sometimes it occasionally shuts down and supposedly there are some spikes. I consider using UPS with the goal to increase safety of my personal data. My first priority is the health of my internal and external USB hard drives which can be damaged due to possible power instability. I do not care that much about possible losses of not-saved work, instead I just want to let my system have a minimum time to turn off without any risk of physical damaging my hard drives. Would a cheap offline UPS suit my neads? Or do i need a better one with automatic voltage regulator (AVR)? How critical is AVR for the hard drives? The external ones require their own power supplies and will be plugged directly into UPS.

• Dropped Dell XPS has hard-drive trouble

  Yesterday, my mom dropped her laptop to the floor and got the blue screen of death after trying to boot the system. I was able to start a Fedora live CD and get some of her stuff off the hard drive, but I cannot seem to be able to install Windows on it. The installation starts loading files and then the computer turns off. I am thinking that she might need a new hard drive. Any ideas? Edit: I actually was able to boot the Windows XP installation but it is saying that no hard disk is detected. How can this be possible if I was able to mount the drive on fedora yesterday?

  Over the past few months, my Windows XP machine has slowed down to a crawl. It takes about 10-15 minutes to go from power-up to reaching a responsive state. I have reasons to believe that this is a result of the hard disk slowing down. Questions: Do hard disks slow down as a result of mechanical wear and tear ...or age? How do I check if my disk has slowed down? Conversely, how can I verify that my disk is indeed running at the speed it's designed to run at? Could drivers be at fault here? Do hard disks come with drivers or does Windows use a generic driver?

  I know that doing a dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdb does a deep hard drive copy. I've heard that people have been able to speed up the process by increasing the number of bytes that are read and written at a time (512) with the "bs" option. People have suggested that the optimal byte size is due to sector size. I personally think it would have something to do with the amount of cache that the hard drive has. My question is: What determines the ideal byte size for copying from a hard drive? and Why does that determine the ideal byte size?

• help building a PC that can image a dozen hard drives simultaneously

  Not sure if this belongs on here or SuperUser, but here goes... I'm trying to figure out how to make a mass hard drive imaging PC out of COTS parts. A dedicated imaging device can do 10 drives at a time, but costs several thousand dollars. So far, I'm thinking to use several 3-port PCI-E Firewire cards, and use some kind of Firewire-to-IDE adapter to connect the drives themselves. The "software" would consist of scripting diskpart, or some other imaging utility. The problem is that I can't seem to find any sort of adapter. I could use standard external hard drive bays, but then I'd have a dozen power cables that I need to plug in. Ugly, messy, and inefficient. I picked Firewire over USB not only for better transfer speeds, but also because FW can deliver power over the bus (and could theoretically power a hard drive). Does anyone have any input on this?

  I have Ubuntu Server 10.04 TLS installed on a Virtual Machine in a VirtualBox. The size of the Hard Drive is dynamic growing hard drive and the maximum is 32GB. At the beginning i had 4GB on the Hard Drive and the size of the .vdi was 4GB. Lately the size of data on the disk is 15GB but the size of the .vdi is almost 32GB. Why is that? How can i pack / optimize / defrag the HD so it will be the same size of the data on the disk? Thanks.

  I've had my current hard drive for about 4-5 years now, and I've never had a problem with it before, but now it's making whirring noises. It's done this before and, last time, the noise did go away the next day, but I have accumulated quite a bit of information that I wouldn't want to lose on the drive. HD Tune Pro and Berlac Advisor both said the drive was healthy, and I wouldn't want to get a new one unless it was absolutely necessary or was going to show drastic performance improvements. My only knock against the drive would be that Visual Studio takes longer to load than I'd like it to. HD Tune Pro says the average read speed is 54.3MB/s. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, but it seems about average compared to similar drives on http://www.hdtune.com/testresults.html. Model #: WDC WD5000AAJS-22YFA0 So, should hard drives be replaced after a certain amount of time? Has mine reached that point? Would a new hard drive be any faster?

  I want to completely wipe all the data and both OSes (Ubuntu and Windows 7) from my hard drive. I tried DBAN but it gives me an error and does not run. I am looking for an alternative. After reading some articles online, I came to know that, using a Linux live CD, it can be done using either of following commands. a) sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda b) sudo shred -vfz -n 1 /dev/sda My questions are 1) Which option (a or b) is more secure (wipes everything) and faster? 2) Does either of the options damage the hard drive or anything? I want to use hard drive again i.e. installing Windows and Ubuntu again.

I'm hoping to get a quick answer here. Does an install format the hard disk, and destroy all data, including non-os/s data? -Or do you specifically have to say "format" at some point so you know you are losing everything? [I tried to go to SP3, but it doesn't work on my computer. My SP2 disk is fired. I only have a SP1 disk, with a seperate SP2 package. I can't get to Safe Mode to uninstall SP3 ("Windows XP Setup cann run under Safemode. Setup will restart now.). I don't want running the SP1 disk to destroy any non-o/s data.] Thanks.

  Hello all, I am developing a web app where I will have to save lots of files and I am just trying to work out the directory structure and where things should be saved to. I have had a look at the dedicated server I want to buy and for storage it shows this: 2x 1TB SATA in RAID1 The space is enough but I am guessing this will not be on one hard drive? I will have to save files on one hard drive and when that fills up, I have to use the other? For the Fedora distro - what is the path for the second drive? Is there a primary drive where I will be able to setup my webroot? I am sorry, this is all new to me.   I am bringing my old laptop for recycling, and removed my hard drive beforehand. The drive is a 320GB SATA drive, which is the same as my current laptop's drive. I would like to be able to easily swap between the two drives, in order to dual-boot that way. My laptop (Toshiba Satellite A500) needs a tiny Philip's screwdriver to get at the hard drive bay. I would like to replace that with something that is more easily changed, while still allowing the hard drive to rest on the desk. It can stick out a bit due to the laptop's feet, but not too far.

  The Mac Pro has a specific hard drive for sale in the Apple Store for $549.00. The drive has the following specs: Serial ATA 3GB per second 7200 RPM Amazon has a hard drive with the same specs for $169.99. The only difference I can tell is that the Apple hard drive label says it has "Apple HDD Firmware". What exactly is the benefit of this firmware and is there something I am missing that make up for the price difference in these two drives? Update: My initial comparison between the two drive was unfair. Apparently 2TB drives that are 3 GB/S and 7200 RPM are quiet a bit more than $169.99. Dell has a 2 TB SATA Caviar Black from Western Digital that is $319.99, which is closer to Apple's price.

  I'm trying to copy some old files from one of my external hard-drives to the hard drive of my desktop PC. Some files can not be copied but giving the error like 'Cannot read from source file or disk'. Those files are videos files (.DAT, .VOB, .MPG) and I watched them all the way through with no issues so the files aren't corrupted. I'm running Windows 7, with admin permissions.   We bought some new PCs in my company with the new iCore 7 and 8GB memory and the following hard disk: WESTERN DIGITAL WD8000AARS 800GB CAVIAR GREEN SATA2 The problem we have is that after installing windows XP64 SP2 the write speed of the hard disk is extremely low!. The windows system monitor shows that the Average Disk queue length is always at 100% and a winzip extract of 350mb takes about 8min.   Is it possible, and if so, what would it take to do a hard drive disc swap? If a HD has a damaged PCB board, but the actual disc inside the drive where all the information is stored is not damaged, is it possible to take that disc and put it in another hard drive whose PCB board is not damaged?   Hi All, I wonder if this is possible to extend or regrow the Linux hard disk partition from 8 GB to 20 GB without losing the existing data on the partition ? at the moment this Ubuntu Linux is deployed on top of VMware and I've just regrow the hard drive from 8 GB into 20 GB but can't see the effect immediately. can anyone suggest how to do this without losing the data ? and I found some strange error message when i do the fdisk -l ?
