I have been a jack of all trades and a master of none. It has served me well in that I am able to move from one technology to the other quickly and make myself productive. Where it becomes a problem is deep knowledge. I am constantly digging for the things that aren’t basic knowledge. How do you make a product like WCF or Windows RT do more than just “Hello World”? As an architect I need to be a jack of all trades. This is what helps me to bring the big picture of a project into focus for developers with different skills to accomplish the goals of the project. It is a key when the mix technologies crosses Windows, Unix and Mainframe with different languages and databases. The larger the company that the project is for the more likely this scenario will arise. As a consultant and a developer I need to have specialized skills in order to get the job done efficiently. if I have a SharePoint or Windows Phone project knowing the object model details and possible roadblocks of the technology allow me to stay within budgets as well as better advise the client on technology decisions. What is the solution? Constant learning and associating with developers who specialize in a variety of technologies is the best thing you can do. You may have thought you were done with classes when you left college, but in this industry you need to constantly be learning new products and languages. The ultimate answer is you must generally specialize. Learn as many subject areas as possible, but go deep when ever you can. Sleep is overrated. exact answer for “what is j2ee?” - job interview

I'd like to ask if someone of you knows the exact meaning of JEE. That's because a collegue of mine was asked this question in a job interview, and was "unable to answer properly"... to speak with his interwiewer's words. And when he told me what he said to his interviewer I got really surprised, since it was more or less what I would have answered myself - in a concise form, the first paragraph of this article. J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) is a Java platform designed for the mainframe-scale computing typical of large enterprises. Sun Microsystems (together with industry partners such as IBM) designed J2EE to simplify application development in a thin client tiered environment. J2EE simplifies application development and decreases the need for programming and programmer training by creating standardized, reusable modular components and by enabling the tier to handle many aspects of programming automatically. That seems not to be enough, since the interviewer asked for "more precise and less general definition". Is there really a more precise definition for JEE? Or did my colleague just find the fussiest-interviewer-ever? :)

multi user web game with scheduled processing?

I have an idea for a game which I am in the process of designing, but I am struggling to establish if the way I plan to implement it is possible. The game is a text based sports management simulation. This will require players to take certain actions through a web browser which will interact with a database - adding/updating and selecting. Most of the code required to be executed at this point will be fairly straightforward. The main processing will take place by applications which are scheduled to run on the server at certain times. These apps will process transactions added by the players and also perform some automatic processing based on the game date. My plan was to use an SQL server database (at last count I require about 20 tables) and VB.net for all the coding (coming from a mainframe programming background this language is the simplist for me to get to grips with). I will also need a scheduling tool on the server. Can anyone tell me if what I am planning is feasible before I dive into the actual coding stage of my project?

Satellite now think for themselves, Skynet becomes self-aware

Gee, why does this sound so incredibly familiar? Skynet (Terminator) "In the Terminator storyline, Skynet was originally installed into the U.S. military mainframe to control the national arsenal on August 4, 1997. On August 29 it gained self-awareness[1] and the panicking operators, realizing the extent of its abilities, attempted to shut it down. Skynet perceived the attempt to deactivate it as an attack and came to the conclusion that all of humanity would attempt to destroy it. To defend itself, it determined that humanity should be exterminated." Alright so it's not in control of the national arsenal, but it's only a matter of time before one of these satellites read Snooki's book and convinces a military satellite that we need to be exterminated.

How is"cloud computing"different from "client-server"?

Watching a CEO for a new "cloud computing" company describe his company on a finance TV program today, he said something like "Cloud computing is superior to old-fashioned client-server computing". Now I'm confused. Can someone please explain what "cloud computing" means in contrast to client-server? As far as I understand it, cloud computing is more of a network services model, such that I do not own or maintain the physical hardware. The "cloud" is all the back-end stuff. But I still might have an application that communicates with that "cloud" environment. And if I run a web site presents a form that a user fills out, pushes a button on the page, and returns some report that was generated by the web server, isn't that the same as "cloud" computing? And would you not consider my web browser as the "client"? Please note my question is specific to the concept of "cloud computing" with respect to "client-server". Sorry if this is an inappropriate question for this site; it's the one closest in the Stack universe and this is my first time here. I'm an old timer, programming since mainframe days in the late 70's.

Technology focussed solutions for Financial Services

Just finished a short trip to London, where I presented our 3 new technology solutions for Financial Services to the Oracle Client Advisors for the top accounts in EMEA. The solutions were well received by all, with opportunities for all 3 in all the top accounts. The solutions that we are focused on this FY are - Large Scale Data Management platform - Extreme Java platform - Banking Modernization platform, which includes Payments Consolidation (Wholesale and Retail), Core Banking Modernization and Mainframe Offload. My team's responsibility is to build the resilient platform that our financial customers can run their applications on. If they chose Oracle's applications such as Flexcube or Reveleus, we have done the hard work to tightly integrate these applications with our LSDM and BM platforms. If however a customer decides to run a competitive application, they should rest assured that we have done the best possible integration work with those applications too. And in the case of Capital Markets where Oracle does not have trading or risk assets, our LSDM and EJP solutions work with our partner applications such as GoldenSource, PolarLake, Calypso to name a few. How Do Computers Work? [closed]

This is almost embarrassing ask...I have a degree in Computer Science (and a second one in progress). I've worked as a full-time .NET Developer for nearly five years. I generally seem competent at what I do. But I Don't Know How Computers Work! Please, bare with me for a second. A quick Google of 'How a Computer Works' will yield lots and lots of results, but I struggled to find one that really answered what I'm looking for. I realize this is a huge, huge question, so really, if you can just give me some keywords or some direction. I know there are components....the power supply, the motherboard, ram, CPU, etc...and I get the 'general idea' of what they do. But I really don't understand how you go from a line of code like Console.Readline() in .NET (or Java or C++) and have it actually do stuff. Sure, I'm vaguely aware of MSIL (in the case of .NET), and that some magic happens with the JIT compiler and it turns into native code (I think). I'm told Java is similar, and C++ cuts out the middle step. I've done some mainframe assembly, it was a few years back now. I remember there were some instructions and some CPU registers, and I wrote code....and then some magic happened....and my program would work (or crash). From what I understand, an 'Emulator' would simulate what happens when you call an instruction and it would update the CPU registers; but what makes those instructions work the way they do? Does this turn into an Electronics question and not a 'Computer' question? I'm guessing there isn't any practical reason for me to understand this, but I feel like I should be able to. (Yes, this is what happens when you spend a day with a small child. It takes them about 10 minutes and five iterations of asking 'Why?' for you to realize how much you don't know)

Accessing html form input type=text using jquery from a windows forms webbrowser-control

I have two elements on my Windows Forms application: Webbrowser-Control Button Inside of the webbrowser-control I show a very simple html-form with two input type=text. I press the button and get access to both text fields. Ext JS how to tell PagingToolbar to use parent Grid storage?

I'm trying to build application that use single config passed by server as non native JSON (can contain functions). Everything works fine so far but I'm curious why PagingToolbar does not have an option to use parent Grid store? I have tried to set store in my config like this, but without success: {... store:Ext.StoreMgr.lookup('unique_store_id') } Is there any way to do so without writing tons of javascript for each view defining store, grid and other items in my application or at least extend functionality of PaginationToolbar that use options from parent object? Using Qt to read and parse html files with QWebKit?

I would like to read and parse certain elements of html files but I'm not interested in rendering it in any way. Basically I would like to go through all my div tags and get some of its style attributes. Sending Illegal XML Characters in Soap Request

I am trying to send special (&, ' (single quote)) characters in the Soap Request. I am using axis 1.4. The webservice client is in weblogic server and the webservice server is an ibm mainframe (COBOL program). The request data from the client contains special character (& symbol) which is converted to & I tried to enclose it with CDATA as <![CDATA[Some Name & Some Data ]]> which got converted to <![CDATA[Some Name & Some Data]]> The webservice client is generated from wsdl, so I couldn't use CDATA api to construct the request. I am able to set it as string value, and it is getting converted. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if you need any more information on this.

White (Light) vs. Black (Dark) Backgrounds: Health Effects

I am adding a bounty to this question, hoping for some scientific research results. Thank you everybody! I have recently tried working on dark backgrounds, and it seemed (to me) to be easier on the eye. However, today I read Gerrie Schenck's comment on this answer, in which he said that mainframe developers were advised to use white backgrounds instead of black, as it is said that white is easier on the eye. So which one is actually better for the eyes in the long run? I would be thankful for any (scientific) references about the subject, as my eyes really need some relaxation. I wanted to make this question a community wiki, but I think that the least I can do to thank people is to reward their answers, so I'm leaving it as a normal question. Many, many thanks for your help. P.S. I don't know which tags would be appropriate for this question, so I'd be grateful if you could tag it in a better way than I did.

SAX Parse Exception

Hi, I am using JMS Messaging in my java program. My messages are coming from IBM Main Frame and the messages are xml files. Mainframe pushwa messages that is xml files to the queue But when the java program reads the messages from the queue an additional character "?" gets added in front of the xml file. For example a file like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> becomes ?<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> when I read the message from the queue. And when I try to parse this I catch the following exception SAX Exception org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: Content is not allowed in trailing section. Content is not allowed in trailing section What could be the reason for this additional character getting added ?

My page is stored as an embedded resource - but the Frame.Navigate takes a URI. Software to find dependencys in a database that not have them as restrictions

I have a database in SQL server 2005 that originaly comes fom an old mainframe. All relations was set in the surrounding software and there are non i the database. I need to find the relations, not by field name but by actual contence in the registers. (as suggestions, I realize I'l have to check them up) It would be nice with some extras, like finding motherless posts etc. but not a primary demand. There are some 200 registers with max 2 000 000 posts in any register. Does any one know of a software that can help me with this? The software I can find presuposes that relations are set in the database :(

How to resize WebView according to its content?

Hi all, I want to set simple html contents within a web view and then resize it according to its content. To set simple html contents within web view I used this code and it is working fine: [[myWebView mainFrame] loadHTMLString:webViewContents baseURL:baseURLFramed]; Right now, if content is more than its actual size then it appears in web view showing both vertical and horizontal scroller in it. I want to set some default width and manage height according to its content in a way so that neither horizontal nor vertical scroller appears. Can anyone suggest me some solution for it? Why is x86 ugly? aka Why is x86 considered inferior when compared to others?

Hello, recently I've been reading some SO archives and encountered statements against x86 architecture. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2667256/why-do-we-need-different-cpu-architecture-for-server-mini-mainframe-mixed-cor says "PC architecture is a mess, any OS developer would tell you that." http://stackoverflow.com/questions/82432/is-learning-assembly-language-worth-the-effort says "Realize that the x86 architecture is horrible at best" http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=976577 says "Most colleges teach assembly on something like MIPS because it's much simpler to understand, x86 assembly is really ugly" and many more comments like Compared to most architectures, X86 sucks pretty badly. It's definitely the conventional wisdom that X86 is inferior to MIPS, SPARC, and PowerPC x86 is ugly I tried searching but didn't find any reasons. I don't find x86 bad probably because this is the only architecture I'm familiar with. Can someone kindly give me reasons for considering x86 ugly/bad/inferior compared to others.

Core dump utility for .NET

In my past life as a COBOL mainframe developer I made extensive use of a tool called Abendaid which, in the event of an exception, would give me a complete memory dump including a formatted list of every variable in memory as well as a complete stack trace of the program with the offending statement highlighted. This made pinpointing the cause of an error much simpler and saved a lot of step-through debugging and/or trace statements. Now I've made the transition to C# and .NET web development I find that the information provided by ASP.NET only tells half the story, giving me a stack trace, but not any of the variable or class information. This makes debugging more difficult as you then have to run the process again with the debugger to try and reproduce the error, not easy with intermittent errors or with assemblies that run under the likes of SQL Server or CRM. I've looked around quite a lot for something that does this but I can't find anything obvious. Does anyone have any idea if there is one, or if not, what I'd need to start with in order to write one?

In our application we are pulling data from a DB2 mainframe database. If the database has "low values" in a field, hibernate sends a "null" value in the object. This occurs even if the column is defined as "not null". As we are doing XML parsing on this, Castor is having trouble with it. I would like to fix this in Hibernate. Also, all of the hibernate hbm files are generated, so we can't mess with them (they are regened from time to time.) Any way to intercept all Strings and replace nulls with ""?

How to make a control invisible?

I've made several TextCtrls and Button, but currently users of my application don't want to see them. So I have to hide them temporary (for current build).
