• Does a portable secondary laptop LCD monitor exist?

  I'm looking to buy a portable secondary LCD monitor for my Macbook Pro, does anything like that exist? I found some laptops that provide a dual 15'' monitor solution (but it's already baked into the hardware). Also some ideas posted about creating this type of setup back in 2007. I'm looking for something that is as thin as a laptop LCD (with maybe a bulky power supply that I could easily daisy chain or plug into a power strip along with my laptop). How difficult would it be to buy a 17'' laptop screen and hook up a DVI connector and power supply, and build a simple monitor stand for it? I've gotten to used to a dual-monitor setup at work and at home with my laptop that having to use my laptop in single-screen mode makes me feel crippled.

• Remote access not working without connected monitor

  I am trying to configure a Windows Server 2008 as a Home Server for my personal use (mainly for storing documents, hosting source-control, etc.). The "server" consists of an Intel Atom 2700DC board and an Intel SSD. Configuring remote access to the server, I am confronted with a very strange problem: As long as a monitor is connected to my server, remote access works without any problems. However, when no monitor is connected at boot-time, remote access simply won't work (I keep getting errors when trying to connect that the remote server was not found or that remote access is disabled). Windows definitely boots when no monitor is connected as I receive a message asking me whether to enter safe mode when booting after powering the server down by plugging the power cord. When I plug in a monitor after boot, it stays turned off and remote desktop connections still fail. Do you have any ideas about what I could try?

  Please vote to reopen. This is different from Can I use my laptop as a second monitor for my desk computer?, because that question is asking how to use the laptop screen as the secondary display, not as the only display. My PC's monitor just died and I'm not looking at buying a new monitor anytime soon. So I'm thinking of using my laptop's monitor for it. Both machines are running on Fedora linux. Edit: Both machines are connected to the same wireless network. PC needs to log in before it can connect to the network if I'm not mistaken.

  Can anybody recommend a linux compatible touchscreen monitor, the criteria are: 19inch or greater 1920x1080 or better only single touch required be able to operate in portait mode We currently have some IIyama Prolite MTS2250MS monitors but these do not natively support portait mode and we have had little success getting the touch functionality working in Linux (although they do report themselves as HID devices when plugged in). So an alternative to suggesting a monitor would be pointers to information on how we could get the IIyama monitor working in Linux.

If it matters my system is like this: Archlinux Linux 2.6.36 Xorg 7.6 X server 1.9.2 Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (fully accelerated by intel modules) When I boot up the system, it uses the integrated monitor (LVDS1) only, and I have to manually manually switch to the external monitor (VGA1) using xrandr. Is it possible to configure my Xorg (or whatever) so that it uses the VGA1 output if present?

  About a month after installing a new graphics card, I started encountering a rather frustrating problem. Namely, if I turn my monitor off for any significant length of time, then turn it back on, it displays only a white screen. Previously, restarting could fix the problem. However, after leaving the computer off last night, the problem persists. An internet search turned up this site; however, the monitor cable is not loose. As for the insides of the monitor - Well, I could poke around, but I risk making it worse if it's not the monitor. Any such instructions should be clear, detailed and include pictures. Further updates as events warrant.

• Triple monitor setup in linux

  I'm hoping there are some xorg gurus out there. I'm trying to get a three monitor setup working in linux. I have 2 lcd monitors and a tv, all different resolutions. I'm using 2 video cards; a 9800 GTX and 7900Gt. I've seen a lot of different posts about people trying to make this work, and in every case, they either gave up, or Xinerama magically solved all their problems. Basically, my main problem is that I cannot get Xinerama to work. Every time I turn it on in the options, my machine gets stuck in a neverending boot cycle. If I disable Xinerama, I just have three Xorg screens, but I can't drag windows from one to the other. I can get the 2 lcds on Twinview, and the tv on a separate Xorg screen no problem. But I don't really like this solution. I'd rather have them all on separate screens and stitch them together with Xinerama. Has anyone done this? Here's my xorg.conf for reference. p.s. This took me all of 30 seconds to set up in Windows XP! p.s.s. I've seen somewhere that maybe randr can solve my problems? But I'm not quite sure how?   hi all my problem is this: i have one video card (radeon hd 4350) and 2 monitors (dell). the first monitor works using dvi-to-dvi. the second does not, using hdmi-to-dvi. the monitor does not register any input. however when i use vga-to-vga, the second monitor does work, with a typically low vga resolution. we have tested the hdmi-to-dvi cable, so why does the monitor not register any input? using windows vista. i have installed all the lastest drivers, done all the basic stuff etc. any help at all would be appreciated. thanks

• Viewsonic Monitor Resolution - Drivers are not working

  I have Viewsonic va1716w monitor which has VGA/D-SUB video input. I bought new Motherboard Intel DH67GD which has HDMI & DVI output. I connect my motherboard to monitor using DVI to VGA connector. It's working. Yesterday I installed windows 7 OS and also installed monitor drivers(downloaded from viewsonic site - signed version) When i set display resolution to 1440 x 900. It's not setting it.it sets back to 800x600. What should i do to make resolution to 1440x900 (monitor resolution)? DVI to VGA causing this problem or i need to do any trick? • AA doesn't work due to monitor?

  I have a monitor (with TV tuner - Philips 221T1SB), native resolution of 1920x1080, but there is an Overscan in Catalyst. It says from left to right '10%' and '0%', if i set it (all the way to the left) on 10%, i get screen with black borders (you know what i mean), but if i set it to 0%, i get a filled monitor. It does make sense, but why the hell is there such an option? I never had any AA issues before, but now, with this monitor, here they go. I can't find any solution, i have only one lead = overscan, or pretty much anything with the CCC settings. Yes, i almost forgot. After a bit of trying to configure the monitor with remote, i found there is a PC channel option, few other channels, and then a HDMI option. I have monitor through HDMI, but why i get black screen when i select the PC channel? That might be another problem. I tried almost everything. Please guys, give me a hand. I don't want jaggies! • Viewsonic monitor keeps showing its on-screen menu incessantly

  Since yesterday my Viewsonic 22" monitor (VX2255wmb) keeps showing its on-screen menu incessantly, without my touching any of its buttons. The menu comes on in the centre of the screen, stays on for 8-10 seconds, disappears for a second or two, then repeats the cycle. This happens whenever there's a signal being sent to the monitor. I can't actually navigate the menu when it appears on-screen. Pressing the power button, or the Up and Down buttons on its right edge dismiss the menu, only for it to reappear again. These symptoms have appeared before, but earlier they'd stop after 5-10 mins. The power button on the monitor has always been iffy, but now it doesn't seem to be working at all--have to switch off power supply from mains when I leave my desk. Using DVI input on this monitor as my HP desktop has DVI output.

• After turning off my monitor, the computer won't display again

  If I physically turn off the monitor (DVI connection) and then turn it back on, the connection does not wake back up. The monitor enters "Power Saving" mode. I've tried unplugging the DVI cable and plugging back in, I've tried updating the video card drivers (it's Windows Vista; Windows 7 failed to install on this machine). I can use VNC to connect to the machine again, and after a reboot, the monitor works again. Does anyone have any idea?

  I am using Windows Server 2008 R2 and IIS 7.5, and am hosting multiple websites on the same webserver. Is it possible to use Performance Monitor to know on average which website is using the most resources? I've added a user-defined Data Collector Set in Performance Monitor collecting data for 1 day. However, I could not find any details which hint which website is using the most resources. Which counters are crucial to monitor websites? The generated report tells me that the top process is w3wp##1 - how can I know which website it corresponds to? I've also tried to add counters for ASP.Net Applications for all object instances, however % Managed Processor Time (estimated) is 0 at all times.

• Windows 7 changes desktop icon location when switching from External Monitor to Internal Monitor (laptop)

  I have a Windows 7 Laptop, and lately its been acting really weird with my 1080p Monitor. When I get home from school, Ill plug my screen in, and close my laptop lid (which makes the laptop treat the Monitor as the primary and only screen). However it will move my desktop icons! This also happens when I remove / unplug the screen, as shown in the pictures. I hate this, as Im the kinda person who's use to every icon being in a set spot, and so am use to their location. Its a massive hassle to try and move the icons back to their original spot. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? • Teamviewer: cannot control monitor 1, but can control monitor 2

  I'm using the web client of Teamviewer from my work computer trying to control my home computer. I have 2 monitors on the remote desktop, but for some reason only have control on the second monitor. When I switch to the main monitor (monitor 1), I cannot do anything and cannot even move the cursor. But I have no issues when I switch over to the second monitor (monitor 2). I used to have no issues with either, but in the past couple of months this has been causing me issues. Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks!! Also... Here is the log from the Teamviewer session. • Rotate UIViewController to counteract changes in UIInterfaceOrientation

  Hi there, I've been searching a lot on this, and can't find anything to help me. I have a UIViewController contained within another UIViewController. When the parent UIViewController rotates, say from Portrait to LandscapeLeft, I want to make it look as though the child didn't rotate. That is to say. I want the child to have the same orientation to the sky regardless of the parent's orientation. If it has a UIButton that's upright in Portrait, I want the right-side of the button to be "up" in UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeLeft. Is this possible? Furthermore, I was planning on using CGAffineTransform (like cited here: http://www.crystalminds.nl/?p=1102) but I'm confused about whether I should change the view's dimensions to match what they will be after the rotation. The big nightmare here is that you have to keep track of a global "orientation" variable. If you don't, the illusion is lost and the ViewController is rotated into whatever. I could really use some help on this, thanks!

I'd like to know how do I make it turn off only the laptop screen and keep the monitor on (I want that behaviour for when I want to watch a movie on my monitor and don't want any brightness coming for the laptop screen). I'm using a HP Pavilion dv4-1290br, which comes with a nVidia GeForce 8400M GTS. I'm using the nVidia driver and it's working perfectly. For my X settings, I'm using TwinView, my laptop is set to 1280x800 and my monitor to 1920x1080. I hope you guys can help me, for I couldn't find anything so far. Thank you very much.

• Rotate a Video 90 degrees with VLC or Windows Live Movie Maker

  Have you ever captured video with your cell phone or camcorder only to discover when you play it back on your computer that the video is rotated 90 degrees? Or maybe you shot it that way on purpose because you preferred portrait style to a landscape view? Before you go straining your neck or flipping your monitor on it’s side to watch your video, we’ll show you a few easier methods. If you simply want to rotate the video while you watch it, we’ll show you how to accomplish that with VLC Media Player. If you want to convert the video so it is rotated permanently, we’ll show you how to do that with Windows Live Movie Maker and output your video as a WMV file. Rotate and Watch a Video in VLC Download, install, and run VLC Media Player. (See download link below)   Open your video file by going to Media  > Open File… and browsing for your file. Or, by just dragging and dropping your video onto the VLC player.   Choose Tools from the Menu bar and select Effects and Filters. On the Video Effects tab, tick the Transform checkbox and choose your degrees of rotation. The video is rotated counter-clockwise, so to rotate clockwise 90 degrees you’ll want to choose Rotate by 270 degrees.   Now you can enjoy your video the way it was intended to be viewed. Rotate and Convert the Video with Windows Live Movie Maker Starting with Windows 7, Windows Movie Maker no longer comes pre-installed with the OS. It’s now part of the Windows Live suite that is available as a separate, free download for Windows 7 and Vista. (Windows XP is not supported) You can find the link to our detailed instruction on how to install Windows Live at the end of the article. To add your video files to Windows Movie Maker, click on Add videos and photos on the Home tab, or drag and drop the video into the blank area on the right side of the application. Next, you’ll need to rotate the video. Staying on the Home tab, click on the Rotate right 90° or Rotate left 90°.   You’ll see your video is now oriented properly on the left.   To save and convert your video to WMV format, click the Movie Maker tab just to the left of the Home tab. Hover your cursor over Save movie, and then select your output settings. You also have the option to burn directly to DVD. Browse for a location to save it and rename the output file if you’d like. Click Save. You’ll be notified when the file is complete. Now you’ll have your video properly oriented in WMV file format.   These are two rather easy ways to accomplish rotating your video. Unfortunately, Windows Live Movie Maker doesn’t give you a lot of  options for output. If you want to output to a file, your only choice is WMV format or DVD. • Strange monitor issue - screen goes black after a few seconds

  My LCD monitor display is going black (turning off). It's a Samsung SYncMaster 2233 widescreen. I am trying to figure out if there is anything I can do about it, or if the monitor is junk. I have tried multiple computers, all have the same issue. I have tried a different vga cable, same issue. Power and video cables are tight / double checked. When I power on the monitor, the blue light turns on at the bottom. Then a second or two later the video comes up as expected and it looks fine. However, about 2-3 seconds after that, the screen goes black. The blue light is still on and solid at the bottom (blue light normally flashes when the monitor is sleeping). If I power cycle the monitor, same thing happens. With no computer connected or when I unplug the vga cable, I see the searching for signal message "digital", then the screen goes black. However it usually shows "digital" then "analog" after that and switches between the two a few times. The buttons on the side do not do anything, although they may be, I just can not see if they are or not. I can usually get the "digital" message by pressing the buttons on the side, but then it quickly goes black again. What is really strange is sometimes I can get it to work fine. I am not sure what the difference is. Last week I connected it up and it worked fine and it stayed fine for at least a week! I did not turn it off or anything, I just let the OS put the display to sleep. Then this week one morning I started having the screen going black issue again. Seems like something is either loose inside or beginning to fail. Do you think there is any hope for it? update: pushing the input select button causes the "digital" and "analog" messages to flash on the screen, but only for a few seconds then it goes black. When it was working properly, those messages would flash back and fourth for probably 10-20 seconds then a message would show saying check input signal, but now just a black screen.
