  • OpenSSL support for Ruby: "Cipher is not a module (TypeError)"

    - by smotchkkiss
The Problem Our systems admin needed to upgrade the packages on our CentOS 5.4 dev server to match the packages on our production server. The upgrade affected ruby and/or openssl. We run a Ruby on Rails issue tracking system called Redmine that is deployed with Passenger on Apache. Everything worked before the server update, but when trying to access the ticket system now, I get the following error: Error message: Cipher is not a module Exception class: TypeError Application root: /home/dev/rails/redmine-0.8.7 I've been trying so hard to fix this problem but I can't seem to beat it. I have tried following this guide: http://iamclovin.posterous.com/how-to-solve-the-cipher-is-not-a-module-error When I try require 'openssl' in IRB, I do see a true return value. However, I'm still seeing the Cipher.rb is not a module TypeError when accessing the ticket system. Possibly (probably) related: I've tried updating Passenger, but when I try passenger-install-apache2-module I see: Checking for required software... * GNU C++ compiler... found at /usr/bin/g++ * Ruby development headers... found * OpenSSL support for Ruby... /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/openssl/cipher.rb:22: Cipher is not a module (TypeError) Any help?

  • Installing Ruby on Rails on Ubuntu 10.04: A Living Nightmare

    - by emptyset
Update #3: Starting over from scratch, shortened this post, decided to re-install a clean copy of Ubuntu 10.04 on a VM and go through the walk-through again. So, all the steps go without a hitch. As root: root@ubuntu:~/rubygems-1.3.7# ruby -v ruby 1.8.7 (2010-01-10 patchlevel 249) [x86_64-linux] root@ubuntu:~/rubygems-1.3.7# gem -v 1.3.7 root@ubuntu:~/rubygems-1.3.7# rails -v Rails 2.3.8 Now, as myself (in a separate term): emptyset@ubuntu:~$ ruby -v ruby 1.8.7 (2010-01-10 patchlevel 249) [x86_64-linux] emptyset@ubuntu:~$ gem -v /usr/local/lib/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems.rb:10:in `require': no such file to load -- rubygems/defaults (LoadError) from /usr/local/lib/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems.rb:10 from /usr/local/bin/gem:8:in `require' from /usr/local/bin/gem:8 emptyset@ubuntu:~$ rails -v bash: /usr/bin/rails: Permission denied So, this appears to be a permissions issue, but I don't understand why. Specifically, if I have to start making things go+rx all over the place, I really need to understand which specific files need the permissions change.

  • combining ruby and C++

    - by Shingetsu
Hello /* programmers */ (I usually hang in SO) I've been discussing a conceptual project with a friend of mine and the the most effective way we've seen of doing it is writing the engine in C++ while the logic would be done in Ruby. However, we would need data to be passed around often, for example: Engine reports that A happened, that gets triggered in a proc array (event "A" is passed but proc doesnt use it) Ruby decides that we need to wait for B to happen Ruby adds a proc to an array. The array of procs is iterated during each cycle in the C++ engine C++ engine reports that B happened and passes "event B (should be a ruby object) Ruby receives event B and decides what to do next I don't work with multiple languages often, and was wondering if it's possible to implement things in this way. I know that there's the ruby VALUE in C++, but would like to know the standard way of combining the two. (of course I know ruby follows the perl "more than 1 way to do it", but there's often a standardized way)

  • Ruby DEPRECATION WARNING: You are using the old router DSL which will be removed in Rails 3.1.

    - by user297221
Hi guys. I am using rails 3 and at the moment i am writing tests for my application. I get this weird deprecation warning: DEPRECATION WARNING: You are using the old router DSL which will be removed in Rails 3.1. Please check how to update your routes file at: http://www.engineyard.com/blog/2010/the-lowdown-on-routes-in-rails-3/. (called from at /Users/jeljer/Dropbox/webCMS/config/environment.rb:6) Of course my routes file is this: WebCMS::Application.routes.draw do #... end but no luck. If I look at the place what it is pointing to in my enviroment.rb: WebCMS::Application.initialize! I did a gem cleanup without any luck. Does anybody have an idea? ps. i am using rvm with ruby 1.9.2

  • package issue with ubuntu 10.10 and passenger requirements

    - by user368937
I'm trying to get Passenger working with Ubuntu 10.10 and I'm running into a problem. It seems that the passenger installer is not recognizing the virtual package. I'm getting this error: Code: passenger-install-apache2-module ... * OpenSSL support for Ruby... not found ... And then it says, run this: * To install OpenSSL support for Ruby: Please run apt-get install libopenssl-ruby as root. When I run the above command, it refers to the libruby package: sudo apt-get install libopenssl-ruby Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Note, selecting 'libruby' instead of 'libopenssl-ruby' libruby is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 43 not upgraded. When I look at the details for libruby, it says it provides libopenssl-ruby: Code: Provides: libbigdecimal-ruby, libcurses-ruby, libdbm-ruby, libdl-ruby, libdrb-ruby, liberb-ruby, libgdbm-ruby, libiconv-ruby, libopenssl-ruby, libpty-ruby, libracc-runtime-ruby, libreadline-ruby, librexml-ruby, libsdbm-ruby, libstrscan-ruby, libsyslog-ruby, libtest-unit-ruby, libwebrick-ruby, libxmlrpc-ruby, libyaml-ruby, libzlib-ruby And when I rerun the passenger installer, it gives the same error: Code: passenger-install-apache2-module ... * OpenSSL support for Ruby... not found ... Let me know if you need more info. How do I fix this?

  • Am I experienced enough to learn and develop immediately using Ruby on Rails?

    - by acheong87
General Question I understand that discussions revolving around questions of this form run the risk of becoming too specific to help others. So, perhaps a better, general question would be: What kind of experience, if any, translates easily to Ruby on Rails; and if none, then what's the learning curve like, in comparison to other popular languages? Background I have the opportunity to build a website using whatever technologies I wish to use. It's a fairly simple website, for listing products, taking payments, managing customer data, providing a back-end portal for employees to manage data, possibly hooking in flight information (the products are travel related), possibly integrating a blog and all the social-networking goodies. Specific Problem I have to let the client know by tonight whether I'm interested in taking up this project, before he talks to other potential developers, but I'm on the fence. I already work a full-time C++ development job, so the money doesn't do it for me. It's the opportunity to (be paid to) learn some new technologies and to have a real, running product in the end. I've heard and read great things about Ruby, and am really intrigued. I zipped through some introductory Ruby tutorials, no sweat. However I found the Rails tutorials a little overwhelming, especially not being able to try it out anywhere. And researching Rails hosts like Heroku and EngineYard makes me think that maybe I don't know what I'm getting myself into. The ship's leaving port! I wish I had more time to learn, better yet play with the language, but I have to decide soon! Should I venture or pass? Additional Details My experiences are in C/C++/Tcl/Perl/PHP/jQuery, and basic knowledge of Java/C#. I didn't study C.S. formally so I wasn't exposed to design principles, programming paradigms, etc., which is my greatest concern. Will my lack of understanding in this realm make RoR frustrating to learn? Will it be so incompatible with a C++ "way" of thinking that I'll wish I never started? Am I putting my client at risk by attempting this? If it helps, I'm quick to learn new things (self-taught so far) and care a great deal about correctness, using things for their intended purposes, and so on. I've read numerous recommendations of Agile Development with Rails and would love to read it (though perhaps, while developing in parallel, for shortness of time). Worse comes to worst, I'd give up and do the standard LAMP gig, of course, not charging the client for wasted time. But I'm hoping to avoid the project altogether if it's gonna come down to that! Thanks in advance for any tips, insights, votes of confidence, votes of discouragement (for the better), and such.

  • How to tell rails to use non-default ruby?

    - by Hamish Downer
I need two different versions of ruby on a server. The packaged ruby for the packaged puppet to work, and a compiled ruby for a rails web app to work. So basically I want the default ruby to be the ruby from the package, and for rails to use the compiled ruby (in /usr/local/bin/ and /usr/local/lib/ ) I've found references to setting the RUBYPATH and RUBYLIB environment variables, but I'm confused as to where to set them. In .bashrc, .profile, in the apache config somewhere?

  • Did we really always need to use Ruby/ rails plugin?

    - by Devlim
I been intersted in ruby and rails lately but what I always encounter in blog/ podcast / book is they will always teach how to use ruby or rails plugin/ ruby instead of writing one. Did we really always need to use plugin, even thing like authorization? Authenticate? Is it really waste time Or hard to write from start? Then if it hard and waste time why rails say make web development less painful? Or I was wrong in term of concept? Goal ? Or anything else? Of rails? Anyone can guide me ?

  • Is there a way of executing embedded ruby in a javascript file in my /public/javascripts directory?

    - by brad
I have a form with an ever-growing amount of associated javascript. At present this javascript lives in my form view which is fine, but it's getting larger and starting to overwhelm the form making it difficult to work on the form. I want to put this in a separate file in my /public/javascripts directory but a lot of the javascript is generated by embedded ruby. This embedded ruby is ignored and passed through to the browser if I just put the code here. What is the best way (if any) of having this embedded ruby executed and the javascript being generated in the same way as if it were in my view?

  • Spork servers super slow (>3m) to start for RSpec & Cucumber BDD

    - by Eric M.
I recently installed a fresh development setup on my laptop and now notice that my instances of spork take several minutes to start up. This is also most likely of the RSpec and Cucumber tests start up times running super slow. I ran in diagnostic mode with the -d flag and received the output below. Anyone have a clue why this is suddenly happening? • Why are some seasoned ASP.NET developers defecting to Ruby on Rails?

    - by Tony_Henrich
Once a while I hear some known ASP.NET developer declaring that they quit developing in .NET and moving to Ruby using Ruby in Rails. The problem is they don't mention exactly the reasons. They use words like RoR is 'easier', 'better' & 'faster'. That really doesn't say much to me. Anyone care to do faithful comparison using code samples, case studies ..etc or from personal experience in using both? Try to convince me to throw away all my years of learning C#, the .NET Framework using a powerful IDE (Visual Studio). Does RoR save you hours a week in development time? What are the major pain points in .NET that compels one to move away from it? This question is NOT about a pure RoR vs ASP.NET (MVC) comparison. It's about the compelling technical reasons (getting bored does not count!) to switch over after using a platform for several years and start with a new language and platform. (prefer this to be a wiki)

  • Trying to use a authlogic-connect as a plugin in place of gem - Server doesn't start

    - by Arkid
I am trying to use Authlogic-connect as a plugin in Rails 3 in place of a gem. I have made an entry in the gemfile as gem "authlogic-connect", :require => "authlogic-connect", :path => "localgems" Now when I run the bundle install, it runs fine. When I try to start the server i get the error Could not find gem 'authlogic-connect (>= 0, runtime)' in source at localgems. Source does not contain any versions of 'authlogic-connect (>= 0, runtime)' Try running `bundle install`. I have placed the unzipped Gem renamed as authlogic-connect in the localgems folder. what is the problem? Here is what I get on using rails plugin install arkidmitra$ rails plugin install git://github.com/viatropos/authlogic-connect.git Usage: rails new APP_PATH [options] Options: [--skip-gemfile] # Don't create a Gemfile -d, [--database=DATABASE] # Preconfigure for selected database (options: mysql/oracle/postgresql/sqlite3/frontbase/ibm_db) # Default: sqlite3 -O, [--skip-active-record] # Skip Active Record files [--dev] # Setup the application with Gemfile pointing to your Rails checkout -J, [--skip-prototype] # Skip Prototype files -T, [--skip-test-unit] # Skip Test::Unit files -G, [--skip-git] # Skip Git ignores and keeps -r, [--ruby=PATH] # Path to the Ruby binary of your choice # Default: /System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/bin/ruby -m, [--template=TEMPLATE] # Path to an application template (can be a filesystem path or URL) -b, [--builder=BUILDER] # Path to an application builder (can be a filesystem path or URL) [--edge] # Setup the application with Gemfile pointing to Rails repository Runtime options: -q, [--quiet] # Supress status output -s, [--skip] # Skip files that already exist -f, [--force] # Overwrite files that already exist -p, [--pretend] # Run but do not make any changes Rails options: -h, [--help] # Show this help message and quit -v, [--version] # Show Rails version number and quit Description: The 'rails new' command creates a new Rails application with a default directory structure and configuration at the path you specify. • Can't compile CentOS 5, Ruby 1.9.2 and OpenSSL 1.0.0c

I'm trying to install Ruby 1.9.2 on CentOS 5.5. I get through most of the make process, but when it tries to compile OpenSSL I get an error. I'm not a master at Linux by any means, but I was able to successfully install this version of Ruby on our dev server. Our live server is running a newer version of OpenSSL which I'm assuming is why it's breaking. Just not sure what the fix is!

  • Ruby: implementing alpha-beta pruning for tic-tac-toe

    - by DerNalia
So, alpha-beta pruning seems to be the most efficient algorithm out there aside from hard coding (for tic tac toe). However, I'm having problems converting the algorithm from the C++ example given in the link: http://www.webkinesia.com/games/gametree.php #based off http://www.webkinesia.com/games/gametree.php # (converted from C++ code from the alpha - beta pruning section) # returns 0 if draw LOSS = -1 DRAW = 0 WIN = 1 @next_move = 0 def calculate_ai_next_move score = self.get_best_move(COMPUTER, WIN, LOSS) return @next_move end def get_best_move(player, alpha, beta) best_score = nil score = nil if not self.has_available_moves? return false elsif self.has_this_player_won?(player) return WIN elsif self.has_this_player_won?(1 - player) return LOSS else best_score = alpha NUM_SQUARES.times do |square| if best_score >= beta break end if self.state[square].nil? self.make_move_with_index(square, player) # set to negative of opponent's best move; we only need the returned score; # the returned move is irrelevant. score = -get_best_move(1-player, -beta, -alpha) if (score > bestScore) @next_move = square best_score = score end undo_move(square) end end end return best_score end the problem is that this is returning nil. some support methods that are used above: WAYS_TO_WIN = [[0, 1, 2], [3, 4, 5], [6, 7, 8], [0, 3, 6], [1, 4, 7], [2, 5, 8],[0, 4, 8], [2, 4, 6]] def has_this_player_won?(player) result = false WAYS_TO_WIN.each {|solution| result = self.state[solution[0]] if contains_win?(solution) } return (result == player) end def contains_win?(ttt_win_state) ttt_win_state.each do |pos| return false if self.state[pos] != self.state[ttt_win_state[0]] or self.state[pos].nil? end return true end def make_move(x, y, player) self.set_square(x,y, player) end

  • What is the best way to set a database entry so that it expires after n hours using Ruby/Rails?

    - by marcgg
My app has a token model as such: class Token < ActiveRecord::Base # The model include a few attributes including created_at end I want entries linked to this model to expire after 6 hours, meaning that they should get automatically deleted. I know that I could set a cronjob or something similar to do this, but isn't there a better/simpler way? Note: I'm using Rails 3.0.0beta3, mysql (in dev) and postgres (in prod)

  • Should I use Ruby version 1.8.7 or 1.9.2 to start developing Rails apps?

    - by BeachRunnerJoe
Hello. I'm diving into RoR and I see that the current version of Rails (3.0.5) works with both 1.8.7 and 1.9.2. Currently, I have both versions of Ruby installed using RVM, but I'm wondering which version I should be using as I dive into Rails and start developing apps. I suppose I'd prefer to use the newest version (1.9.2), but I don't know the technologies well enough to know pros/cons of using either. Thanks so much!

  • Paperclip and tempfile with Rails

    - by Eric Koslow
I'm trying to write a rails application where users can upload images, but Paperclip doesn't seem to be working for me. I've gone through all the basic steps (added has_attached_file, the migration, making the form multipart) but I keep getting the same error whenever I try uploading an image: can't convert nil into Integer Looking at the top of the stack ...rails3/lib/paperclip/processor.rb:46:in `sprintf' ...rails3/lib/paperclip/processor.rb:46:in `make_tmpname' .../ruby-1.9.2-head/lib/ruby/1.9.1/tmpdir.rb:154:in `create' .../ruby-1.9.2-head/lib/ruby/1.9.1/tempfile.rb:134:in `initialize' It seems the problem is in the tempfile. My code: _form.rb <%= form_for @high_school, :html => {:multipart => true} do |f| %> <%= f.error_messages %> ... <div class="field"> <%= f.file_field :photo %> </div> <div class="actions"> <%= f.submit %> </div> <% end %> model/high_school.rb ... validates_length_of :password, :minimum => 4, :allow_blank => true has_attached_file :photo has_many :students ... Is this a known problem? I basically followed the instructions from the github to the letter. My environment: Rails3 and Ruby 1.9.2dev Thank you!

  • Remove ActiveRecord in Rails 3 (beta)

    - by Splash
Now that Rails 3 beta is out, I thought I'd have a look at rewriting an app I have just started work on in Rails 3 beta, both to get a feel for it and get a bit of a head-start. The app uses MongoDB and MongoMapper for all of its models nad therefore has no need for ActiveRecord. In the previous version, I am unloading activerecord in the following way: config.frameworks -= [ :active_record ] # inside environment.rb In the latest version this does not work - it just throws an error: /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/railties-3.0.0.beta/lib/rails/configuration.rb:126:in `frameworks': config.frameworks in no longer supported. See the generated config/boot.rb for steps on how to limit the frameworks that will be loaded (RuntimeError) from *snip* Of course, I have looked at the boot.rb as it suggested, but as far as I can see, there is no clue here as to how I might go about unloading AR. The reason I need to do this is because not only is it silly to be loading something I don't want, but it is complaining about its inability to make a DB connection even when I try to run a generator for a controller. This is because I've wiped database.yml and replaced it with connection details for MongoDB in order to use this gist for using database.yml for MongoDB connection details. Not sure why it needs to be able to initiate a DB connection at all just to generate a controller anyway.... Is anyone aware of the correct Rails 3 way of doing this?

  • can't run cucumber scenarios due to test-unit version issue on Rails 2.3.5, Ruby 1.9.1

    - by Jeff D
    I've been trying to follow along in the RSpec book, (I'm new to all of this) and I have what appears to be some kind of versioning issue. If I try and run some simple scenarios, I get this error: can't activate test-unit (= 1.2.3, runtime) for [], already activated test-unit-2.0.7 for [] (Gem::LoadError) /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.1-p378/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.9.1/rubygems.rb:230:in activate' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.1-p378/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.9.1/rubygems.rb:1056:ingem' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/rspec-1.3.0/lib/spec/interop/test.rb:4:in <top (required)>' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/polyglot-0.3.1/lib/polyglot.rb:64:inrequire' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/polyglot-0.3.1/lib/polyglot.rb:64:in require' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/activesupport-2.3.5/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:158:inrequire' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/rspec-1.3.0/lib/spec/test/unit.rb:1:in <top (required)>' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/polyglot-0.3.1/lib/polyglot.rb:64:inrequire' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/polyglot-0.3.1/lib/polyglot.rb:64:in require' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/activesupport-2.3.5/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:158:inrequire' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/rspec-rails-1.3.2/lib/spec/rails.rb:13:in <top (required)>' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/polyglot-0.3.1/lib/polyglot.rb:64:inrequire' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/polyglot-0.3.1/lib/polyglot.rb:64:in require' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/activesupport-2.3.5/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:158:inrequire' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/cucumber-rails-0.3.0/lib/cucumber/rails/rspec.rb:15:in rescue in <top (required)>' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/cucumber-rails-0.3.0/lib/cucumber/rails/rspec.rb:3:in' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/polyglot-0.3.1/lib/polyglot.rb:64:in require' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/polyglot-0.3.1/lib/polyglot.rb:64:inrequire' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/activesupport-2.3.5/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:158:in require' /Users/jeffdeville/code/showtime/Features/support/env.rb:11:in' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/polyglot-0.3.1/lib/polyglot.rb:64:in require' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/polyglot-0.3.1/lib/polyglot.rb:64:inrequire' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/cucumber-0.6.4/lib/cucumber/rb_support/rb_language.rb:124:in load_code_file' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/cucumber-0.6.4/lib/cucumber/step_mother.rb:85:inload_code_file' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/cucumber-0.6.4/lib/cucumber/step_mother.rb:77:in block in load_code_files' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/cucumber-0.6.4/lib/cucumber/step_mother.rb:76:ineach' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/cucumber-0.6.4/lib/cucumber/step_mother.rb:76:in load_code_files' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/cucumber-0.6.4/lib/cucumber/cli/main.rb:48:inexecute!' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/cucumber-0.6.4/lib/cucumber/cli/main.rb:20:in execute' /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/cucumber-0.6.4/bin/cucumber:8:in' script/cucumber:9:in load' script/cucumber:9:in' however, uninstalling 2.0.7 yields the error: Missing these required gems: test-unit = 2.0.7 You're running: ruby 1.9.1.378 at /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.1-p378/bin/ruby rubygems 1.3.6 at /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378, /Users/jeffdeville/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378@global Run rake gems:install to install the missing gems.
