  • How to make bash script run with a latency (i.e. wait 1 sec at each iterations)?

    - by user2413
    I have this bash script; for (( i = 1 ; i <= 160 ; i++ )); do qsub myccomputations"${i}".pbs done Basically, I would prefer if there was a 1 second delay between each iteration. The reason is that at each iterations, it sends the program file mycomputation"${i}$.pbs to a core node for solving. Solving in this instance involves the use of pseudo random numbers. I suspect the RNG I use (R's) uses CPU time as seed because as things are now I get repeating pseudo random numbers (at the rate of approx 1 out of 100). So how to you ask bash to for (( i = 1 ; i <= 160 ; i++ )); do wait 1 sec qsub myccomputations"${i}".pbs done

  • How to create reproducible probability in map generation?

    - by nickbadal
    So for my game, I'm using perlin noise to generate regions of my map (water/land, forest/grass) but I'd also like to create some probability based generation too. For instance: if(nextInt(10) > 2 && tile.adjacentTo(Type.WATER)) tile.setType(Type.SAND); This works fine, and is even reproduceable (based on a common seed) if the nextInt() calls are always in the same order. The issue is that in my game, the world is generated on demand, based on the player's location. This means, that if I explore the map differently, and the chunks of the map are generated in a different order, the randomness is no longer consistent. How can I get this sort of randomness to be consistent, independent of call order? Thanks in advance :)

  • Generate Unique Abstract Backgrounds with Ablaze

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
    If you want custom and unique backgrounds without having to code your own image-generating engine, Ablaze makes it simple (and fun) to create abstract images. You can customize a wide array of options in Ablaze including the base shape (ring, horizontal line, or random), number of particles, distance each particle travels, and the speed (if you increase the speed range you get more distinct lines and if you decrease it you get smoother smokier shapes). You can also seed the design with a color palette pulled from any image you provide (the sample above was seeded with a Wonder Woman comic panel). Tweak and reset the pattern generation as much as you want; when you create an abstract image worthy of your desktop just click the save button to grab a copy of it in PNG format. • Where to generate data in an Entity-Component System?

    - by Mark Mandel
    So I'm making a small game where I generate 2D landscape using perlin noise when the game first loads. I've got it working in a OO way, but want to move over to an ES architecure, and I'm just struggling to work out the right place for the code that does the generation to go? In OO world, I have a World object which gets passes a coordinate value that is used as the seed for the perlin noise, and generates all the points for the land mass when the world is created. I'm thinking I need a World component with a coordinate field on it - that's an easy part. From there - is it right for a component to generate data when it's first initialised (or is that too OO?)? Or should a System be doing that instead, when the game first starts? Or... some other solution I'm not aware of? Thanks in advance for any guidance.

  • Code Golf: MSM Random Number Generator

    - by Vivin Paliath
    The challenge The shortest code by character count that will generate (pseudo)random numbers using the Middle-Square Method. The Middle-Square Method of (pseudo)random number generation was first suggested by John Von Neumann in 1946 and is defined as follows: Rn+1 = mid((Rn)2, m) For example: 34562 = 11943936 mid(11943936) = 9439 94392 = 89094721 mid(89094721) = 0947 9472 = 896809 mid(896809) = 9680 96802 = 93702400 mid(93702400) = 7024 Test cases: A seed of 8653 should give the following numbers (first 10): 8744, 4575, 9306, 6016, 1922, 6940, 1636, 6764, 7516, 4902

  • Grails build-test-data

    - by bsreekanth
    Hello, Is it advisable to use the build-test-data plugin to load the bootstrap (seed/initial) data for an application. The plugin tutorial is excellent at http://bitbucket.org/tednaleid/grails-test-data/wiki/Home , but only mention about loading test data. There is a section about TestDataConfig , which allows to set default data. But is it a viable option if the data needs to persist in a larger scale, with complex relations.\ thanks.

  • Random numbers from -10 to 10 in C++

    - by Chris_45
    How does one make random numbers in the interval -10 to 10 in C++ ? srand(int(time(0)));//seed for(int i = 0; i < size; i++){ myArray[i] = 1 + rand() % 20 - 10;//this will give from -9 to 10 myArray2[i] =rand() % 20 - 10;//and this will -10 to 9 }

  • How would I create a random number?

    - by Elliot Bonneville
    How would I create a random number using C++? I've heard that one should use the time as a seed, but I'm not sure how to do that with the correct syntax. How would I do this? One more thing - how would I limit the random number to a particular range? I'm simulating a dice roll and getting numbers in the millions...

  • C#: AutoFixture refactoring

    - by Thomas Jaskula
    Hello, I started to use AutoFixture http://autofixture.codeplex.com/ as my unit tests was bloated with a lot of data setup. I was spending more time on seting up the data than to write my unit test. Here's an example of how my initial unit test looks like (example taken from cargo application sample from DDD blue book) [Test] public void should_create_instance_with_correct_ctor_parameters() { var carrierMovements = new List<CarrierMovement>(); var deparureUnLocode1 = new UnLocode("AB44D"); var departureLocation1 = new Location(deparureUnLocode1, "HAMBOURG"); var arrivalUnLocode1 = new UnLocode("XX44D"); var arrivalLocation1 = new Location(arrivalUnLocode1, "TUNIS"); var departureDate1 = new DateTime(2010, 3, 15); var arrivalDate1 = new DateTime(2010, 5, 12); var carrierMovement1 = new CarrierMovement(departureLocation1, arrivalLocation1, departureDate1, arrivalDate1); var deparureUnLocode2 = new UnLocode("CXRET"); var departureLocation2 = new Location(deparureUnLocode2, "GDANSK"); var arrivalUnLocode2 = new UnLocode("ZEZD4"); var arrivalLocation2 = new Location(arrivalUnLocode2, "LE HAVRE"); var departureDate2 = new DateTime(2010, 3, 18); var arrivalDate2 = new DateTime(2010, 3, 31); var carrierMovement2 = new CarrierMovement(departureLocation2, arrivalLocation2, departureDate2, arrivalDate2); carrierMovements.Add(carrierMovement1); carrierMovements.Add(carrierMovement2); new Schedule(carrierMovements).ShouldNotBeNull(); } Here's how I tried to refactor it with AutoFixture [Test] public void should_create_instance_with_correct_ctor_parameters_AutoFixture() { var fixture = new Fixture(); fixture.Register(() => new UnLocode(UnLocodeString())); var departureLoc = fixture.CreateAnonymous<Location>(); var arrivalLoc = fixture.CreateAnonymous<Location>(); var departureDateTime = fixture.CreateAnonymous<DateTime>(); var arrivalDateTime = fixture.CreateAnonymous<DateTime>(); fixture.Register<Location, Location, DateTime, DateTime, CarrierMovement>( (departure, arrival, departureTime, arrivalTime) => new CarrierMovement(departureLoc, arrivalLoc, departureDateTime, arrivalDateTime)); var carrierMovements = fixture.CreateMany<CarrierMovement>(50).ToList(); fixture.Register<List<CarrierMovement>, Schedule>((carrierM) => new Schedule(carrierMovements)); var schedule = fixture.CreateAnonymous<Schedule>(); schedule.ShouldNotBeNull(); } private static string UnLocodeString() { var stringBuilder = new StringBuilder(); for (int i = 0; i < 5; i++) stringBuilder.Append(GetRandomUpperCaseCharacter(i)); return stringBuilder.ToString(); } private static char GetRandomUpperCaseCharacter(int seed) { return ((char)((short)'A' + new Random(seed).Next(26))); } I would like to know if there's better way to refactor it.   • Distinct rand() sequences yielding the same results in an expression

    - by suszterpatt
    Ok, this is a really weird one. I have an MPI program, where each process has to generate random numbers in a fixed range (the range is read from file). What happens is that even though I seed each process with a different value, and the numbers generated by rand() are different in each process, the expression to generate the random numbers still yields the same sequence between them. Here's all relevant code: // 'rank' will be unique for each process int rank; MPI_Comm_rank(MPI_COMM_WORLD, &rank); // seed the RNG with a different value for each process srand(time(NULL) + rank); // print some random numbers to see if we get a unique sequence in each process // 'log' is a uniquely named file, each process has its own log << rand() << " " << rand() << " " << rand() << std::endl; // do boring deterministic stuff while (true) { // waitTimeMin and waitTimeMax are integers, Max is always greater than Min waitSecs = waitTimeMin + rand() % (waitTimeMax - waitTimeMin); log << "waiting " << waitSecs << " seconds" << std::endl; sleep(waitSecs); // do more boring deterministic stuff } Here's the output of each process, with 3 processes generating numbers in the range [1,9]. process 1: 15190 28284 3149 waiting 6 seconds waiting 8 seconds waiting 9 seconds waiting 4 seconds process 2: 286 6264 3153 waiting 6 seconds waiting 8 seconds waiting 9 seconds waiting 4 seconds process 3: 18151 17013 3156 waiting 6 seconds waiting 8 seconds waiting 9 seconds waiting 4 seconds So while rand() clearly generates different numbers, the expression to calculate waitSecs still evaluates to the same sequence on all processes. What's even weirder: if I run the program with the same parameteres again, only the first 3 random numbers will change, the rest of the "random" sequence will be exactly the same in each run! Changing the range of numbers will obviously produce a different result from this one, but the same parameters always yield the same sequence, between processes and between executions: except for the first 3 numbers. Just what the hell is going on here?

  • Where to put files that will be read in a Rails app?

    - by Guilherme
    I'm developing a Rails application and within that application I developed a Rake task that will read entries from a file and store them into the DB. Producing the code was no problem, but I'd like to know, where do I place the file that is read? Is there a convention for that, if yes, what is it? I know I could have used the seed.rb file but is it ok, by the standards, to load and read a file from there? Thanks in advance!

  • Negative Primary Keys

    - by bjax
    Are there any repercussions using Negative Primary Keys for tables (Identity Increment -1, Identity Seed -1 in SQL Server 2005)? The reason for this is we're creating a new database to replace an existing one. There are similar tables between the two databases and we'd like the "source" of the information to be transparent to our applications. The approach is to create views that unions tables from both databases. Negative PKs ensures the identities don't overlap.

  • Efective way to avoid integer overflow when multiplying?

    - by Jonathan
    Hi, I'm working on a hash function which gets a string as input. Right now I'm doing a loop and inside the hash (an int variable) is being multiplied by a value and then the ASCII code for the current character is added to the mix. hash = hash * seed + string[i] But sometimes, if the string is big enough there is an integer overflow there, what can I do to avoid it while maintaining the same hash structure? Maybe a bit operation included inside the loop?

  • Where does that randomness come from ?

    - by Jules Olléon
    I'm working on a data mining research project and use code from a big svn. Apparently one of the methods I use from that svn uses randomness somewhere without asking for a seed, which makes 2 calls to my program return different results. That's annoying for what I want to do, so I'm trying to locate that "uncontrolled" randomness. Since the classes I use depend on many other, that's pretty painful to do by hand. Any idea how I could find where that randomness comes from ?

  • 50 million+ Rows of Data - CSV or MySQL

    - by eWizardII
    Hello, I have a CSV file which is about 1GB big and contains about 50million rows of data, I am wondering is it better to keep it as a CSV file or store it as some form of a database. I don't know a great deal about MySQL to argue for why I should use it or another database framework over just keeping it as a CSV file. I am basically doing a Breadth-First Search with this dataset, so once I get the initial "seed" set the 50million I use this as the first values in my queue. Thanks,
