  • Can I run into legal issues with random names?

    - by Nathan Sabruka
I'm currently building a game whose NPC's are going to be assigned a random gender and a random name for the right gender. To do this I will be using a "database" of names (actually a text file with tuples). There would also be a list of last names, which will be added to the first name also randomly. My question is the following. Suppose one such random name is "George Bush", and this person has been randomly assigned the job of president. As you can see, this could easily be seen as having been "copied" from a real-life person. The main issue is this. Names will be randomly-generated, yes, but the seed for random-number generation will be constant. In other words, the name of an NPC would be randomly-generated, i.e. I wouldn't choose it, but it would be the same for every player. Could this get me in trouble? We cannot verify all possible names, since the generated number of NPC's could be potentially limitless (new NPC's are being created whenever needed).

  • Why is my root filesystem always scanned at boot?

    - by luri
I always have a pause at boot saying my filesystems are being checked (with a "press C to cancel" note, too). Actually (seeing boot.log) I think it's the / fs, which is located at /dev/sdb5 Several questions altoghether, here (hope this does not break any rule): Is this normal? Can I (or even should I) prevent this anyhow? According to boot.log (below) the fs does not seem to be 'clean', or, at least, it's in an state or condition that makes fsck always can it for errors for a while (just a few seconds). How can I fix it? • Museum of Modern Art Starts Video Game Collection; Acquires Myst, Pac-Man, and More

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
The Museum of Modern Art is weighing in on the video-games-as-art debate by starting a collection of iconic video games and putting them up for public display. Read on to see what games are included in the initial batch and the MoMA’s reasons behind starting a video game collection. Although the MoMA is slated to grow to over 40 titles, the seed batch is 14 titles including: Pac-Man, Tetris, Sim City 2000, Myst, Portal, and Dwarf Fortress. In the announcement they explain the motivation for building a video game collection: Are video games art? They sure are, but they are also design, and a design approach is what we chose for this new foray into this universe. The games are selected as outstanding examples of interaction design—a field that MoMA has already explored and collected extensively, and one of the most important and oft-discussed expressions of contemporary design creativity. Our criteria, therefore, emphasize not only the visual quality and aesthetic experience of each game, but also the many other aspects—from the elegance of the code to the design of the player’s behavior—that pertain to interaction design. In order to develop an even stronger curatorial stance, over the past year and a half we have sought the advice of scholars, digital conservation and legal experts, historians, and critics, all of whom helped us refine not only the criteria and the wish list, but also the issues of acquisition, display, and conservation of digital artifacts that are made even more complex by the games’ interactive nature. This acquisition allows the Museum to study, preserve, and exhibit video games as part of its Architecture and Design collection. The above quote is only a small snippet of a much lengthier look at the benefits of examining and preserving video games, hit up the link below to check out the full post including future titles the MoMA would like to include in their archive. • Entity Framework RC1 DbContext query issue

    - by Steve
I'm trying to implement the repository pattern using entity framework code first rc 1. The problem I am running into is with creating the DbContext. I have an ioc container resolving the IRepository and it has a contextprovider which just news up a new DbContext with a connection string in a windsor.config file. With linq2sql this part was no problem but EF seems to be choking. I'll describe the problem below with an example. I've pulled out the code to simplify things a bit so that is why you don't see any repository pattern stuff here. just sorta what is happening without all the extra code and classes. using (var context = new PlssContext()) { var x = context.Set<User>(); var y = x.Where(u => u.UserName == LogOnModel.UserName).FirstOrDefault(); } using (var context2 = new DbContext(@"Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=PLSS.Models.PlssContext;Integrated Security=True;MultipleActiveResultSets=True")) { var x = context2.Set<User>(); var y = x.Where(u => u.UserName == LogOnModel.UserName).FirstOrDefault(); } PlssContext is where I am creating my DbContext class. The repository pattern doesn't know anything about PlssContext. The best I thought I could do was create a DbContext with the connection string to the sqlexpress database and query the data that way. The connection string in the var context2 was grabbed from the context after newing up the PlssContext object. So they are pointing at the same sqlexpress database. The first query works. The second query fails miserably with this error: The model backing the 'DbContext' context has changed since the database was created. Either manually delete/update the database, or call Database.SetInitializer with an IDatabaseInitializer instance. For example, the DropCreateDatabaseIfModelChanges strategy will automatically delete and recreate the database, and optionally seed it with new data. on this line var y = x.Where(u => u.UserName == LogOnModel.UserName).FirstOrDefault(); Here is my DbContext namespace PLSS.Models { public class PlssContext : DbContext { public DbSet<User> Users { get; set; } public DbSet<Corner> Corners { get; set; } public DbSet<Lookup_County> Lookup_County { get; set; } public DbSet<Lookup_Accuracy> Lookup_Accuracy { get; set; } public DbSet<Lookup_MonumentStatus> Lookup_MonumentStatus { get; set; } public DbSet<Lookup_CoordinateSystem> Lookup_CoordinateSystem { get; set; } public class Initializer : DropCreateDatabaseAlways<PlssContext> { protected override void Seed(PlssContext context) { I've tried all of the Initializer strategies with the same errors. I don't think the database is changing. If I remove the modelBuilder.Conventions.Remove<IncludeMetadataConvention>(); Then the error returns is The entity type User is not part of the model for the current context. Which sort of makes sense. But how do you bring this all together?

  • Having troubles with LibNoise.XNA and generating tileable maps

    - by Jon
Following up on my previous post, I found a wonderful port of LibNoise for XNA. I've been working with it for about 8 hours straight and I'm tearing my hair out - I just can not get maps to tile, I can't figure out how to do this. Here's my attempt: Perlin perlin = new Perlin(1.2, 1.95, 0.56, 12, 2353, QualityMode.Medium); RiggedMultifractal rigged = new RiggedMultifractal(); Add add = new Add(perlin, rigged); // Initialize the noise map int mapSize = 64; this.m_noiseMap = new Noise2D(mapSize, perlin); //this.m_noiseMap.GeneratePlanar(0, 1, -1, 1); // Generate the textures this.m_noiseMap.GeneratePlanar(-1,1,-1,1); this.m_textures[0] = this.m_noiseMap.GetTexture(this.graphics.GraphicsDevice, Gradient.Grayscale); this.m_noiseMap.GeneratePlanar(mapSize, mapSize * 2, mapSize, mapSize * 2); this.m_textures[1] = this.m_noiseMap.GetTexture(this.graphics.GraphicsDevice, Gradient.Grayscale); this.m_noiseMap.GeneratePlanar(-1, 1, -1, 1); this.m_textures[2] = this.m_noiseMap.GetTexture(this.graphics.GraphicsDevice, Gradient.Grayscale); The first and third ones generate fine, they create a perlin noise map - however the middle one, which I wanted to be a continuation of the first (As per my original post), is just a bunch of static. How exactly do I get this to generate maps that connect to each other, by entering in the mapsize * tile, using the same seed, settings, etc.?

  • virtual install from ISO not getting virtual kernel

    - by Pete
I have a KVM host (12.04.5) that I have been installing guests on in variety of ways. I just noticed recently one of my guests was running a generic kernel when I'm fairly certain I specified minimum virtual machine during install from a 12.04.2 server iso. From what I understand it should be running a stripped down kernel "optimized" for VMs. I set up another server to test, this time using a 14.04.1, and sure enough I ended up with uname -r returning 3.13.0-32-generic. It seems that if I use an .iso to install, I end up with generic regardless. However building with the vmbuilder ... --flavour virtual --suite precise ... (I don't have trusty available yet) script gives me an ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS system running kernel 3.2.0-67-virtual. The server FAQ mentions I should be getting the virtual kernel. What are practical advantages of using linux-image-virtual kernel? gives me the impression that it doesn't really matter functionally (in my case I only have a couple VMs running). I first thought was maybe I was somehow not applying the correct options because the installer F4 menu doesn't really give great feedback if the mode has been selected or not. Looking in the log /var/log/installers/syslog I see Command line: file=/cdrom/preceed/ubuntu-server-minimalvm.seed ... I know that I can install the virtual kernel package down the road, but why am I not, or should I be getting the virtual flavor of kernel from an ISO install when doing an minimum VM install?

As some of you may have noticed, we've recently opened a new repository in the Code Tools project for small utilities which can be used to gather info about the OpenJDK code base and builds. 1 The latest addition is a utility for analyzing the class file versions in a collection of class files. I've posted an example set of results from analyzing the class files in an OpenJDK build on Linux. 2. Most of the files are version 52 files as you would expect, but there is a surprising number of version 51 and 50 files, as well as a handful of v45.3 files as well. Digging deeper, it turns out that Nashorn is still using version 51 class files, and the Serviceability Agent is still using version 50 class files and one 45.3 class file, leaving the remainder of the 45.3 class files coming from RMI. For more info on the different class file versions, see Joe Darcy's class file version decoder rIng. Thanks to Stuart Marks for planting the seed for the class file version tool. See the project page, repo, and mail archive. http://cr.openjdk.java.net/~jjg/cfv-summary/open/

  • 12.04 upgrade broke grub? (not wubi related)

    - by kaare
I just updated from 11.10 to 12.04, with no major problems (it took a while to get past a request to restart ssh, mysql and some other services, but I did no fiddling by myself, everything was done by the installer). However, after restarting, grub can't do anything. Picking the new linux installation (first entry), I just get error: no such partition error: no such partition error: no such partition and picking the recovery-version just gives 5 lines instead of 3. I have windows 7 installed on a different drive, and can run it by booting from that drive instead. Picking it from the grub menu gives the same error as above (can't remember how many lines, though). I'll be honest and say that I don't remember if win 7 could be booted from grub before the update, though. In short, nothing on the grub menu works. any solutions? The grub menu changed appearance - before it was on a purple background, small letters, now it's white-on-black, big letters, looking very basic. The original installation was from a usb-drive, and I hadn't heard about wubi until I started googling this problem, so I doubt there's any connection. I really hope there are some grub-savvy people out there :) EDIT: ok. so, I made a bootable usb, and am running from that right now. when I ran the bootinfoscript, it warned me that "gawk" could not be found, using "busybox awk" instead. This may lead to unreliable results. just so you know. I probably ought to start by saying that I suspect the problem is that one of my vectors is not in the correct "space", but I don't know for sure. I am having a strange problem with a directional light. When I move the camera away from (0.0, 0.0, 0.0) it creates tiny black spots that grow larger as the distance increases. I apologize ahead of time for the length of the code. • UIImagePicker and Memory Warning Level 1

    - by user262829
Hello, Whenever I use a UIImagePicker to take a picker in my app, I get the following message in the debug console: Receive memory warning. Level=1 I am using the following code: imagePickerController = [[UIImagePickerController alloc] init]; imagePickerController.delegate = self; imagePickerController.sourceType = UIImagePickerControllerSourceTypeCamera; [window addSubview:imagePickerController.view]; imageView = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithFrame:[window bounds]]; imageView.hidden = YES; [window addSubview:imageView]; [window makeKeyAndVisible]; Does anybody have any ideals? I did not notice this error until I started using the GM Seed for SDK4.

  • Why do I get this error when I try to push my SQLite3 to Postgresql (via Taps) on Cedar Stack?

    - by rhodee
I've done quite a bit of research on Heroku Dev Center and I am now looking to the community for help. Here is my problem. I can not push my db to Heroku Cedar Stack. I am trying to migrate a sqlite database to postgresql via Taps gem. When I am ready to deploy I run: bundle install --without production heroku run db:push I get the following result: Running db:seed attached to terminal... up, run.17 sh: db:seed: not found heroku run rake db:migrate And when I run the migration: heroku run rake db:migrate I get the following: Running rake db:migrate attached to terminal... up, run.18 rake aborted! No Rakefile found (looking for: rakefile, Rakefile, rakefile.rb, Rakefile.rb) /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:2367:in `raw_load_rakefile' /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:2007:in `block in load_rakefile' /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:2058:in `standard_exception_handling' /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:2006:in `load_rakefile' /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:1991:in `run' /usr/local/bin/rake:31:in `<main>' Everytime I push to Heroku (git push heroku master) it fails because my gem file is attempting to install sqlite3 gem-even though its inside of the development and test groups in my Gemfile. My database.yml production environment still points to sqlite adapter even after I have run the following command successfully: heroku config:add BUNDLE_WITHOUT="test development" --app app_name_on_heroku Out of ideas. Please help. If its useful I can post results of my gemfile, heroku ps and logs. Cheers UPDATE: After following @John's direction I now receive the following terminal message. • UIImageWriteToSavedPhotosAlbum not working in iOS 4?

    - by nickthedude
Ive been using this function: (http://developer.apple.com/iphone/library/documentation/uikit/reference/UIKitFunctionReference/Reference/reference.html#//apple_ref/c/func/UIImageWriteToSavedPhotosAlbum) ...to save a uiimage to the users photo album and it works great on everything except a 4.0 simulator, dont have a device to test on so it may be boned there as well. ive also tried it in both the latest xcode (3.2.3 gm seed) and a previous build of 3.2.3. can anyone confirm that this is still function is still "functional" in iOS 4. the documentation gives no indication that it would be removed and I havent seen anything in searches related to it. Thanks, Nick

  • The Community-Driven GDB Primer

    - by fbrereto
I was reading this question and realized it might be helpful for entry- and pro-level developers alike (including myself) to have a common reference for best practices in using gdb. Many questions asked on Stack Overflow could easily be solved by taking some time to step some code in a debugger, and it would be good to have a community-approved resource to "teach them how to fish", so to speak. Even for those seasoned veterans who occasionally find themselves in gdb when they are accustomed to a GUI-tastic debugger might benefit from those who are much more familiar with the command line tool. For starters (both to gdb and to prime this thread) I submit: Ninefinger's gdb primer The gdb quick reference guide, which is useful for telling you what commands are available but not how best to use them. My hope is this thread is a seed planted that is of continued value to the community. If by "continued value" the community decides to nix it altogether, well then the masses have spoken.

  • MSSQL Efficiently dropping a group of rows with millions and millions of rows

    - by Net Citizen
I recently asked this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2519183/ms-sql-share-identity-seed-amongst-tables (Many people wondered why) I have the following layout of a table: Table: Stars starId bigint categoryId bigint starname varchar(200) But my problem is that I have millions and millions of rows. So when I want to delete stars from the table Stars it is too intense on MS SQL. I cannot use built in partitioning for 2005+ because I do not have an enterprise license. When I do delete though, I always delete a whole category Id at a time. I thought of doing a design like this: Table: Star_1 starId bigint CategoryId bigint constaint rock=1 starname varchar(200) Table: Star_2 starId bigint CategoryId bigint constaint rock=2 starname varchar(200) In this way I can delete a whole category and hence millions of rows in O(1) by doing a simple drop table. My question is, is it a problem to have thousands of tables in your MS SQL? The drop in O(1) is extremely desirable to me. Maybe there's a completely different solution I'm not thinking of?

  • Using boost unordered map

    - by Amrish
Guys, I am using dynamic programming approach to solve a problem. Here is a brief overview of the approach Each value generated is identified using 25 unique keys. I use the boost::hash_combine to generate the seed for the hash table using these 25 keys. I store the values in a hash table declared as boost::unordered_map<Key_Object, Data_Object, HashFunction> hashState; I did a time profiling on my algorithm and found that nearly 95% of the run time is spent towards retrieving/inserting data into the hash table. These were the details of my hash table hashState.size() 1880 hashState.load_factor() 0.610588 hashState.bucket_count() 3079 hashState.max_size() 805306456 hashState.max_load_factor() 1 hashState.max_bucket_count() 805306457 I have the following two questions Is there anything which I can do to improve the performance of the Hash Table's insert/retrieve operations? C++ STL has hash_multimap which would also suit my requirement. How does boost libraries unordered_map compare with hash_multimap in terms of insert/retrieve performance.

  • Best practice for assigning A/B test variation based on IP address

    - by mojones
I am starting to write some code for A/B testing in a Grails web application. I want to ensure that requests from the same IP address always see the same variation. Rather than store a map of IP-variant, is it OK to simply turn the IP address into an integer by removing the dots, then use that as the seed for a random number generator? The following is taking place in a Grails Filter: def ip = request.remoteAddr def random = new Random(ip.replaceAll(/\./, '').toInteger()) def value = random.nextBoolean() session.assignment = value // value should always be the same for a given IP address I know that identifying users by IP address is not reliable, and I will be using session variables/cookies as well, but this seems to be useful for the case where we have a new session, and no cookies set (or the user has cookies disabled).

Deliberate practice are exercise and repetitions targeted specifically at an individual's weak points and meant to consistently stretch / grow someone's ability. It was described in this Anders Ericsson paper. To qualify as a deliberate practice, the exercise must satisfy the following: Is not inherently enjoyable. Is not play or paid practice. Is relevant to the skill being developed. Is not simply watching the skill being performed. Requires effort and attention from the learner. Often involves activities selected by a coach or teacher to facilitate learning. Please answer with one practice per answer. I'll seed the question with one possible answer.

  • SQL Server Efficiently dropping a group of rows with millions and millions of rows

So when I want to delete stars from the table Stars it is too intense on SQL Server. My question is, is it a problem to have hundreds of thousands of tables in your SQL Server? The drop in O(1) is extremely desirable to me. Maybe there's a completely different solution I'm not thinking of?

  • Combining SpecFlow table and Moq mocked object

    - by Confused
    I have a situation where I want to use a mocked object (using Moq) so I can create setup and expectations, but also want to supply some of the property values using the SpecFlow Table. Is there a convenient way to create a mock and supply the table for the seed values? // Specflow feature Scenario Outline: MyOutline Given I have a MyObject object as | Field | Value | | Title | The Title | | Id | The Id | // Specflow step code Mock<MyObject> _myMock; [Given(@"I have a MyObject object as")] public void GivenIHaveAMyObjectObjectAs(Table table) { var obj = table.CreateInstance<MyObject>(); _myMock = new Mock<MyObject>(); // How do I easily combine the two? }

  • How do I draw an arrow on a histogram drawn using ggplot2?

    - by jon
    Here is dataset: set.seed(123) myd <- data.frame (class = rep(1:4, each = 100), yvar = rnorm(400, 50,30)) require(ggplot2) m <- ggplot(myd, aes(x = yvar)) p <- m + geom_histogram(colour = "grey40", fill = "grey40", binwidth = 10) + facet_wrap(~class) + theme_bw( ) p + opts(panel.margin=unit(0 ,"lines")) I want to add labels to bars which each subject class fall into and produce something like the post-powerpoint processed graph. Is there way to do this within R ? ...... Edit: we can think of different pointer such as dot or error bar, if arrow is not impossible Let's say the following is subjects to be labelled: class name yvar 2 subject4 104.0 3 subject3 8.5 3 subject1 80.0 4 subject2 40.0 4 subject1 115.0 classd <- data.frame (class = c(2,3,3,4,4), name = c ("subject4", "subject3", "subject1", "subject2", "subject1"), yvar = c(104.0, 8.5,80.0,40.0, 115.0))

  • SQL Query - 20mil records - Best practice to return information

    - by eqiz
I have a SQL database that has the following table: Table: PhoneRecords ID(identity Seed) FirstName LastName PhoneNumber ZipCode Very simple straight forward table. This table has over 20million records. I am looking for the best way to do queries that pull out records based off area codes from the table. For instance here is an example query that I have done. SELECT phonenumber, firstname FROM [PhoneRecords] WHERE (phone LIKE '2012042%') OR (phone LIKE '2012046%') OR (phone LIKE '2012047%') OR (phone LIKE '2012083%') OR (phone LIKE '2012088%') OR (phone LIKE '2012841%') As you can see this is an ugly query, but it would get the job done (if I wasn't running into timeout issues) Can anyone tell me the best way for speed/optimization to do the above query to display the results? Currently that query above takes around 2 hours to complete on a 9gb 1600mhz ram, i7 930 quadcore OC'd 4.01ghz. I obviously have the computer power required to do such a query, but still takes too long for queries.
