  • Cannot reactivate RAID-5 volume: The size of the plex member is invalid

    We had a 3-drive Windows Server 2008 R2 RAID-5 fail (operating in redundancy mode): WDC 1 TB WDC 1 TB WDC 1 TB We removed the failed hard drive, and put a WDC 1 TB drive (that we had standing by) into the machine. When launched, Disk Manager, asked permission to "initialize" the disk as either: Master Boot Record (MBR) Guid Partition Table (GPT) We initialized the disk as GPT, converted it to dynamic, and tried to use the Repair Volume command - except it was greyed out. (which is a terrifying thing on a failed production server hosting 3 virtual servers) i tried from the diskpart command line tool. First we look for our RAID-5 volume that is in Failed Rd mode: DISKPART> list volume Volume ### Ltr Label Fs Type Size Status Info ---------- --- ----------- ----- ---------- ------- --------- -------- Volume 0 E VMs (Raid5) NTFS RAID-5 1863 GB Failed Rd Volume 1 D DVD-ROM 0 B No Media Volume 2 System Rese NTFS Partition 100 MB Healthy System Volume 3 C NTFS Partition 1862 GB Healthy Boot There, Volume 0.   • HP Pavilion dv3 volume control display driver on Windows 7

    I've recently bought an HP Pavilion dv3-2150ep and I'm having a hard time getting the volume control display to work as expected. The control is a back-lit touch-sensitive bar above the keyboard. Now the buttons to turn the volume up and down actually do it, but the lightning is not changing at all. The mute button does change color when toggled. I'm not sure if I'm missing any drivers here (I've installed all of those on the HP support page that seem to have something to do with sound and/or display) or if I have to activate this somewhere. Any ideas?

It is obvious that hardware is able to play the same sounds but louder but because of the data it just plays it at some low level even at 100% volume. Vlc can generally increase the volume of a file up to 200%. Is there a way to do the same thing VLC does system-wide and if possible for an arbitrary v percentage value. If there is no application that does this, where should i look into for libs to do it myself or what code should i modify(eg code in the alsamixer) thank you

  • Debian based OS: Show system notification on clipboard copy/paste events

    When working with Linux (Debian based), I often experience problems in relation to the copy paste commands: I copy something with Ctrl+C or by selecting it with the mouse, but when I try to paste it somewhere else, the clipboard is empty and nothing happens - whatever reason caused this. This annoys me, as I have to switch to the source application again and again copy the text. So to really be sure if something was copied into the clipboard I would like it if the window manager (be it Gnome, KDE, etc) would show a Desktop Notification (for example powered by libnotify) as soon as anything is copied into the clipboard, showing the content that has been copied into the clipboard. Is that possible by using one of the many clipboard managers out there (glippy, clipit, ...)? If not, can I write a (DBus?)-hook, which is triggered during copy-to-clipboard-actions, showing the content which is to copy inside the Desktop Notification? (The latter approach would be more interesting, since I'm interested in hooking into system events in general)

I suppose I just never figured out a way to do it right, so I always needed to: expose the shadow copy as a separate LUN offline the original CSV in the cluster un-expose the LUN carrying the original CSV make sure my cluster nodes have detected the new LUN and no longer list the original one add the volume to the list of cluster volumes, promote it to be a CSV copy off the data I need undo steps 5. - 1. to revert to the original configuration This is quite tedious and requires downtime for the original volume. Is there a better way to do this without involving a separate host outside of the cluster?

  • What is the difference between Skip and Don't Copy buttons in Copy File dialog?

    This is a silly question. In Windows 7/Vista when a user trying to copy multiple file, it looks like he has five options: Copy and Replace Don't Copy Copy, but keep both files Skip Cancel the operation. It looks to me that option 2 (Don't Copy) is the same as 4 (Skip). However, it's kind of strange for Microsoft to put two buttons that perform the same action. I probably miss something. Could you please tell me what I'm missing?

  • Can't copy paste on the first try

    When I try to copy and paste something from firefox to say notepad or word, it doesn't work on the first try. That is I go to firefox, select text, right click, select copy, then switch to notepad, right click, select paste, but it pastes not the thing which I copied just now, but whatever was in the clipboard before I copied. If after this I go back to firefox and copy that text again, and then go back to notepad, then it will paste correctly. So in order to copy paste something it takes me 2 tries. This doesn't always happen this way, but only sometimes. So sometimes I can paste on first try, but sometimes it takes me two tries. I am using firefox 7.0.1 and windows 7. Also it is not only with firefox, sometimes the same thing happens when I copy paste from other programs. What could be the reason, and how can I fix this?

  • Reducing volume of an audio device on windows 7

    I have a USB headset with a very loud amplifier, but low granularity in its gain control. In order to get comfortable audio, I have to reduce the individual application levels in the mixer to '1', and the master mixer to around '10'. Of course, new applications start out at '10', and immediately blast out my ears. Is there a way to add a filter to cut down the volume some so I can get better control of it? That is, reduce the volume of '100' so I can work within a reasonable range.

  • Batch copy gives errors, xcopy works fine

    I am writing a general file backup program. It searches the drive for files matching a set of types and then writes them to a folder on the desktop. I wrote it using xcopy on Windows XP but upon learning that xcopy was deprecated in favor of robocopy in Vista and newer, still wanting to maintain compatibility I decided to switch to the non-deprecated copy. This is where the problems begin. I'm trying to fix the copy routine. I thought I had everything sorted out, but it doesn't copy anything. My output is zero files copied for every iteration.   • Slow File Copy observed copying 40GB files across network to iSCSI device

    Here's a curious ones for the gurus: Setup: Source Machine: Windows Server 2003 R2 machine with local hard drive. VHD file of 40GB. 1 x 1Gbps network card, Cat6 cable, switch. Target Machine: Windows Server 2008 R2 machine with iSCSI connection to iSCSI target on separate machine (1TB, RAID5). 1 x 1Gbps network card, Cat6 cable, connected to same switch as for Source Machine. Second 1Gbps network card, Cat6 cable, connected via isolated switch to the iSCSI target. Switches are Netgear JGS524 model (web managed). If I copy from the Win2003R2 machine to Win2008R2 machine local drive I get 40GB in 45 minutes, 36 seconds. If I copy from the Win2008R2 machine to the iSCSI target (local drive to iSCSI target) I get 40GB in 37 minutes 56 seconds. If I copy from the Win2003R2 machine to the iSCSI target via the Win2008R2 machine I get 40GB in 3 hours, 50 minutes, 24 seconds. All copies were done via the following command issued on the Win2008R2 box: XCOPY <source> <target> /J XCOPY /J - Copies using unbuffered I/O. Recommended for very large files. So, what's the bit I'm missing here? Why does a back-to-back copy take in total 1 hour, 23 minutes, 32 seconds when a "straight through" copy take almost 3 times as long? Switches show no errors, network hovers around the 3% utilisation mark for the duration of the copy (whereas the "back-to-back" copies are around the 25% utilisation mark). What have I missed?

  • Volume range is narrow in 12.04

    I have upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 and I have a problem with the volume. The problem is that the volume is 0 when the volume bar is between 0% and 66% more or less, so the actual volume range is only between 66% and 100%. If I open the sound configuration menu, the position in the volume bar that makes the sound begin sounding (66% more or less) is placed where it says "no amplification". Can anyone help me? I'm wondering if there is something I'm doing wrong?

  • Is "watermarking" code with random trailing whitespace a good way to detect plagiarism?

    Consider this: int f(int x) { return 2 * x * x; } and this int squareAndDouble(int y) { return 2*y*y; } If you found these in independent bodies of code, you might give the two programmers the benefit of the doubt and assume they came up with more-or-less the same function independently. But look at the whitespace at the end of each line of code. Same pattern in both. Surely evidence of copying. On a larger piece of code, correlation of random whitespace at line ends would be irrefutable evidence of a shared origin. Now aside from the obvious weaknesses: e.g. visible or obvious in some editors, easily removed, I was wondering if it was worth deploying something like this in my open source project. My industry has a history of companies ripping off open source projects.

I've been able to produce this with CSS3, and it works flawlessly on Firefox and Chrome: However, Internet Explorer 7 and 8 (not supporting CSS3) is a different story: Is there an easy, lightweight JavaScript solution that would allow me to either 1) use IE-specific features to achieve this, or 2) modify the DOM (programmatically) in such a way that adds custom images around the content area to emulate the effect?

  • Drop shadow on a div container?

    I have a searchbox with auto-suggest that pops a div up underneath it with multiple search string suggestions (like google). Is it possible to have drop shadow on the auto-suggest box with CSS or will I need a script of some sort? I tried a background image but the number of suggests can vary from 1 to 10 or 15. I'd prefer something that works in IE6+ and FF2+ if possible. Thanks!

  • Quickly switch Win7 volume normalization on/off?

    Is there some way to quickly toggle the state of volume normalization in Windows 7? When it's off watching movies late is tricky, and when it's on it messes with music in a bad way.
