  • Multiple network connections on a Windows 2008 domain controller (private network for NAS)

    I have a Windows 2008 server connecting to an iSCSI target on an OpenSolaris box (yay ZFS!). I'd like to create a private network between the 2 boxes that is totally separate of my Windows domain. What is the best way to configure the additional network adapter on the Windows machine so it doesn't think the new subnet is part of the Windows domain? I want to make sure Windows doesn't magically start spewing active directory communications over the private wire and that it doesn't start poisoning the DNS with IPs from the private network.

  • Bash command to focus a specific window.

    Is there a way, in bash command line, to give focus to a specific window of a running process. Assume I know the process' name, number, and anything else I need. For instance, if I have a single instance of Firefox running, but it's minimized (or there's some other window on top of it). I need a bash command that brings up and gives focus to the Firefox window, by making it the active window. Thanks

  • Can I install SQL Server 2008 R2 on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard machine in a workgroup then join the server to a domain?

    I have a Windows 2008 Server Standard x64 machine that I need to install SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard on then ship it to a different site where it will be joined to a Active Directory domain. The server is now using the default "WORKGROUP" workgroup and i need to know if i can install SQL Server on it then ship it to the other site where it will be joined to the domain without issues. What are the possible problems that could happen? are there any workarounds?

  • Expose Windows LDAP address book on the internet

    I need to expose Active Directory, or at least the address book functions on the internet for some mail clients and other devices. The standard response is to simply not or vpn in, however VPN isn't an option for us with some of the hardware devices. A number collages expose their setups out to the internet so I'm assuming their has to be a safe way of doing it. Best option I've come up with to install a linux ldap host, then hourly sync over the relevant contact information however that seems like major overkill.

  • Active C++ project to contribute to

    I am a self-taught c++/java programmer (I will be starting uni in August though!). I have worked on one project in which I was part of an active team. I really felt I learnt the most and gained a lot of experience while working with the team. Unfortunately it was a small closed source project which has recently taken a slumber. I'm looking for some active open source c++ projects which I could contribute to (preferably that are mainly developed on the linux platform). The other project I worked on was a video game, however, I would like to contribute to a project which has a functional purpose (other than to amuse). Any suggestions on possible projects?

    I'm buying a Server from a person (that I don't know really well) and I want to make sure that the previous owner hasn't got any access anymore. It's an Ubuntu Virtual Server and I already received the admin access (via shell). How can I find out if there are still other accounts left, who are still able to access my server (e.g. with a still existing shell account, ftp or another type of user account)?   • How to hide a trusted domain in the logon screen?

    I need to create a bidirectional trust between two Active Directory domains. But management is worried that users will be puzzled out when seeing another domain name in the drop-down list in the Windows logon screen (many of them use Windows XP), and that help desk calls for failed logins due to having selected the wrong domain will skyrocket. Also, the two domain names are quite similar, adding to the possible user confusion. Is there any way to hide a trusted domain from the drop-down list in the Windows logon screen?

  • How can I copy a file from VMS to Windows and back again?

    I am trying to copy C source files from a vms alpha to a windows machine to allow easier editing of the code. (VMS editor is just a text editor and it would be nice to have syntax highlighting etc) I can copy this across using Exceed FTP and this handles the issue of duplicate filenames with version suffix that vms has: File.c;1 File.c;2 Flle.c;3 But when I open a file I've transferred, all the line breaks have been lost and the entire file is just one line. Can anyone recommend a solution to this or offer any hints? Thanks in advance ps. I need to be able to copy the files back to vms and still maintain format.

  • C# progress bar not synced with download (WebClient class)

    Hi, I am coding a system which has a small FTP module included inside, it's not the main feature at all, but needed... I must link the progressbar with the WebClient class event DownloadProgressChangedEventHandler and AsyncCompletedEventHandler, the progressbar increment is ok, and the ASyncCompletedEventHandler launch a MessageBox (as intended), the problem is that the progress bar see to load too slow... problem : My MessageBox pop at 100% (launched by the event handler), BUT when the MessageBox pop my progress bar is only at +-80% (but the .VALUE is really 100), the first though I had was that they have added a "smooth" effect in Windows Vista which slow down the progressbar relatively to it's true value. If any of you have experienced the same problem thanks for your help.

  • Why doesn't my Administrator account have access privileges?

    We are running windows server 2003.I log in as Administrator but I don't have any access rights. I tried to create a new Administrator account but when logging into that one I still face the same issue. Is there a problem with the Group Administrators? If so is there a way to restore it's default settings? Note: This problem started after I uninstalled the Active directory role from the server. Thanks in advance.

    I'm trying to stop a TCP Listener as my program is exiting. I do not care about any data that is currently active on the socket or any of the active client sockets. The socket clean up code is essentially: try { myServer.Server.Shutdown(SocketShutdown.Both) } catch (Exception ex) { LogException(ex) } myServer.Server.Close(0) myServer.Stop() myServer is a TCPListener On some occasions, Shutdown will thrown an exception System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: A request to send or receive data was disallowed because the socket is not connected and (when sending on a datagram socket using a sendto call) no address was supplied at System.Net.Sockets.Socket.Shutdown(SocketShutdown how) When this happens, the socket is never released. Even after the application exits netstat shows the socket is still in the listening state. I have not been able to create definitive reproduction scenerio, it happens at seemingly random times. Client Sockets are cleaned up independently. Do you have any suggestions to help me make this socket die?

    I'm getting really confused, reading tutorials from SAMBA howto, which is hell of a mess. Could you write step-by-step, what events happen upon NetLogon? Or in particular, I can't get these things: I really can't get the mechanism of action of LDAP and its role. Should I think of Active Directory LDS as of its superset? What're the other roles of AD and why this term is nearly a synonym of term "domain"? What's the role of LDAP in the remote login sequence? Does it store roaming user profiles? Does it store anything else? How it is called (are there any upper-level or lower-level services that use it in the course of NetLogon)? How do I join a domain. On the client machine I just use the Domain Controller admin credentials, but how do I prepare the Domain Controller for a new machine to join it. What's that deal of Machine trust accounts? How it is used? Suppose, I've just configured a machine to join a domain, created its machine trust, added its data to the domain controller. How would that machine find WINS server to query it for Domain Controller NetBIOS name? Does any computer name, ending with <1C type, correspond to domain controller? In what cases Kerberos and LM/NTLM are used for authentication? Where are password hashes stored in, say, Windows2000 domain controller? Right in the registry? What is SAM - is it a service, responsible for authentication and sending/storing those passwords and accompanying information, such as groups policies etc.? Who calls it? Does it use Active Directory? What's the role of NetBIOS except by name service? Can you exemplify a scenario of its usage as a "datagram distribution service for connectionless communication" or "session service for connection-oriented communication"?   • Fixing permissions after FTPing ASP.NET code to a Linux system

    First off, I'm running Mono to run ASP.NET on Linux, but that's not the question. It appears that, every time I clear out my application directory and upload, I have to go back in and fix the permissions. What I'm doing is chmod -R -c 755 /var/www/* ...and there are two questions. What's the deal with having to do this every time I FTP? Feels flaky. Is there a better permissions set than 755? Do I want different permissions for the /bin directory? Or can I fix this all with one fell swoop of chown?

    If I'm at the domain controller (in the Active Directory) to find out what groups the "XPSP3-A" workstation is a member of, I do: dsquery computer "CN=XPSP3-A,CN=Computers,DC=pvk,DC=local" -name XPSP3-A | dsget computer -memberof and receive the following: "CN=Sec Group 001,OU=OU1,DC=pvk,DC=local" "CN=Domain Computers,CN=Users,DC=pvk,DC=local" But how to do the same from the "XPSP3-A" workstation?

  • AD group authentication to view wordpress posts?

    I'm trying to set up a wordpress site using active directory authentication. One question that has come up is the ability to limit category/post/blog reading to specific AD groups. I've never seen this done and I haven't been able to find any plugins that seem to promise this functionality. It would seem that the best option is to just give a bunch of users a role with the read_private_posts capability, but I'm not sure this will do the trick.

The problem is that a different desktop loads for only one specific user no matter what changes I make in administrative templates. If I copy this user profile and paste it into another group with a different name, windows workaround loads as it should, but some policies are not applied. Does anybody know a way to solve this problem instead of creating a new group and user from scratch?

  • Understand ACTV mode and the PORT command

    Hello, I'm the part time FTP server administrator (with no real full-time admin). We currently only allow ACTV mode connections. Some of our clients have had issues with this but for the most part they've been ok using ACTV. For the few who aren't, we've been able to push the data over to their servers from ours. there is one client in particular however who is currently having trouble. He is using file-zilla and issuing a PORT command. First, does using the PORT command imply that you are in ACTV mode? Second is there a way in FileZilla to explicitly change to ACTV mode?   • How can I automatically create a folder, assign a home folder and logon script automatically after a new User is created?

    Usually I create a new user, then set the home folder, logon script, etc... Is it possible in Active Directory when I create a new AD user object, that it goes out to my share drive and automatically creates a folder for them (naming it their username), and then assigns that folder as their home drive? It would also be helpful if it would automatically assign them a specific logon script at user creation too. Thank you!

  • Problem with Authentication in sharepoint using active directory

    I am currently using windows server 2008 machine. I have active directory and sharepoint setup on the machine. I have a user 'A' in the active directory and i have given the user read permissions to my site. The problem i now face is that, if i log in as user 'A' the site simply shows "error:access denied". This problem goes away if i put 'A' as a site collection administrator, however that is not what i want. I just want 'A' to be a visitor that can browse the site. I also tried granting 'read' permission to my site for 'A' but that still gives me the access denied message. Thank you for your time.

  • Simulate printers on AD network

    I need to create an Active Directory lab that contains printers and test out various printer-related functionality (adding printers in AD, clients attaching to printers, printers, etc) Is there a good way to properly simulate printers on a network? Or does there need to be real physical printers somewhere that eventually are attached, even if no output comes out. How would you solve this problem?
