• My internet connection just got really slow - How can I troubleshoot it?

  A few days ago my connection became really slow. I have DSL which should be 3mb down and 768k up. I'm lucky if I get 768k down and 200k up. It sucks. I called my ISP, Verizon and they did some sort of line test and told me the problem was on my end. I rebooted my modem several times, like they told me. I'm not really sure why I even bothered calling them, the guy on the other end was just reading stuff out of a notebook - pretty useless. So, I checked my network traffic in windows resource monitor, and there doesn't seem to be anything there hogging the bandwidth. What else could be slowing my connection down on my PC? on my router? Something else?

• Windows XP Disc: corrupt or not corrupt?

  Hi all, I just finished one of my builds and am trying to install Windows XP onto it. Here are the specs beforehand... Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 2.4 GHz (512KB L2, 533MHz FSB) QDI Superb 4 Motherboard 2x 1GB PC3200 DDR RAM Seagate 80GB IDE HDD Bestec 250W PSU 16MB NVIDIA TNT2 Pro Samsung DVD-ROM USB 2.0 PCI Card Generic PCI Modem The issue right now is that when I'm running through the Windows Setup from my XP Pro SP3 disc, partway through the setup says that a random file on the disc is corrupt and the computer needs to be restarted. Every time I tried booting it up, a different file was noted as corrupt. However, I tested the same disc on another computer and the Windows XP disc ran to the end of the setup screen without error. I tried this on another computer and the same thing. What could possibly be happening on this one build to cause it errors during the Windows Setup? Thanks in advance.

I want to ensure that my private traffic cannot be accessed from users of the public access point. I currently have one router that is running the Tomato firmware that I use with WPA security. • How to find ip address of my Asus RT-AC86U in Access Point mode?

  I'm using an Asus wireless router model RT-AC68U and can connect fine to the internet using it wirelessly. I configured the router to be an Access Point, but having done so, I can no longer locate the GUI to adjust the router as I have no idea what its IP Address is anymore. The router is plugged into a cable modem and router which is a model SMCD3G is a business class gateway labeled Comcast Business IP Gateway. This gateway is assigning ip addresses in the range 10.1.10.XX and I went to the web interface at 10.1.10.1 and listed the connected devices and see my laptop which is connected to the Asus access point along with a few other devices, but none of the devices listed are the Asus router (I tried all the six ip addresses listed). How can I determine the IP Address of my Asus router in access point mode so I can see the GUI interface again to control the router other than by doing a factory reset?

I'm actually interested in doing the opposite: Sharing my landline internet connection(which is much faster than any 3G service) with by cellphone. My phone is a Verizon BlackBerry Curve 8330 and it has USB and bluetooth connections. I know both USB and Bluetooth are capable of supporting tcp/ip traffic what's not so clear is: Is IP over USB or Bluetooth standardized? Is it supported on my phone? Has my cellphone company crippled my phone to prevent me from using it?

• Can't access DD-WRT set in DHCP forwarder

  This might sound amazingly stupid but I have a DD-WRT (micro) router that I placed in my network to act as a switch and as a WAP while relying on my cable modem to be the DHCP server. In my attempts to get the configuration right I put the router into DHCP forwarder which then made everything work correctly. The problem is now I can't seem to connect to the router in any fashion to add mac addresses to the WAP access list. Is there something I'm missing or do I need to try a hard reset on it and reconfigure everything?

• LAN speeds and firewall/switch connections

  I have a small network with about ten users. All workstations flow into a Dell PowerConnect 3424 which then has a single link to a SonicWALL firewall and from there to a cable modem. More important than internet connectivity is speed between machines (specifically a Windows Server box on the LAN which everyone uses simultaneously). I believe the 3424 has gigabit connections, but they look like they're for stacking. Is there a way to test the speeds on the LAN to see where the speeds are at? Is there any low-hanging fruit insofar as increasing speeds?

  Hi, I apologize for the crudeness of my MSPaint drawing, but please view my diagram of what I'd like to accomplish: Proposed home network architecture Currently, all devices are connected to 1 wireless router. I would like to make my own subnet, with a box in-between my subnet and the shared wireless router, so that I can learn about IDS, traffic analysis, etc. I was also given a cisco PIX firewall to play around with, and it'd be an added bonus if I could incorporate that into my network. The reason for this proposed architecture is so that I can monitor all MY traffic, without seeing anything going on with my roommates' traffic. my MAIN Question is, is it possible to have my desktop connect to the wireless router with internet via wireless card AND share that connection via the ethernet card, hooked to wireless router 2? cable modem - wireless router - desktop pc connected wirelessly - wireless router 2 getting internet from wired connection to desktop pc - laptops connected wirelessly The PIX can be left out for now, but I'm wondering if it could eventually be incorporated? • Unexpected network traffic?

  My internet connection is via a fixed wireless connection using a 900MHz Motorola Canopy module. The router reports a fairly consistent 32-64Kbps of incoming traffic on the WAN port. When I attached a PC directly to the port and run Wireshark, I get a dump showing a lot of chatter from other machines that I presume are connected to the same tower. This didn't include end-to-end traffic, but was there were a lot of ARP requests, SSDP traffic, ICMP and other network discovery type stuff. Is this 'normal' or does it suggest a misconfiguration somewhere? As far as I can tell there is no need for my modem to be receiving any of this traffic (other than wanting to know what the names of my neighbours machines and printers are!) Since the internet connection is slow at the best of time, having this amount of background noise seems very wasteful.

• Internet keeps getting Disconnected & Reconnected

  I have an Internet connection thru a Phone company which uses DSL modem to connect. For past few weeks my net connection keeps getting disconnected for few seconds & it reconnects automatically. I asked the service provider & they checked & even replaced some wires but of no help. Funny thing is that sometimes there seems to be a rhythm where it disconnects for an average of 13 seconds or so plus or minus few seconds, for hours at a time. I don't know how to attach an image to this post where it shows the pattern of connect & disconnect. I have taken an image using snagit to show the timing pattern. • Linux Bridge, Samba netbios name/hostname access

  I am currently running a linux bridge in the following configuration ADSL Modem: 192.168.1.1 Linux Bridge: eth0: 192.168.1.2 eth1: no address Wireless Router: 192.168.0.1 My issue is that i cannot access the "Linux Bridge" shares using the WINS name of the server via client systems (yes i understand it is a transparent bridge but i can access it via the 192.168.1.2 address this is not on the same subnet as the client systems). • multiple vlans routed on one nic? trunk?General? or Access?

  ok for the last week I've tried racking my head around this... I have a SRW208P with 802.1q support, and a virtual endian appliance. I would like to be able to have 3 vlans having everything routed through the endian appliance.. i.e. The Virtual server has 2 bridged NIC's to the switch. This is where I'm getting confused .. On the 8 port switch I've got the 3 vlans set up ok (all being untagged as they are not going to be vlan aware), it's the port I'm connecting the endian firewall to the switch I'm having trouble with (second nic goes to the adsl modem and NAT'd) Is it meant to be a trunk, "Genereal" or "Access" then untagged or tagged? the end goal is to have vlan traffic routing through the single NIC and have endian route vlan traffic according to the rules. Any one have any ideas on the cisco small business stuff? Thanks

• DHCP for Multiple Subnets

  So this is the current setup - essentially I would like to get my DHCP server, serving DHCP requests for two seperate subnets. Netgear DG834G acting as a modem connected to a Sonicwall Pro 2040. X0 - LAN - 192.168.1.0/24 X1 - WAN - <WAN-IP> X2 - WLAN - 192.168.10.0/24 At the moment, I have a 2008R2 server with DHCP installed, with an IP address on the 192.168.1.0/24 range handling DHCP fine for this subnet. The Sonicwall is configured correctly - anything connected to the WLAN has Full Allow to anything in the LAN, and vice versa but it will not lease an IP from my Server. I've also added another IP address to the server, so the physical NIC now has two IP's: 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.10.2 with a DHCP scope configured for each. Still no luck! Any ideas? Thanks!

• Public IP shows strange characters and Facebook registers logged-in session to a different location

  I'm encountering some IP strangeness today and hoping to find an explanation. In short, I'm based in Seattle, WA with my ISP being Comcast. While browsing Facebook's account settings, I noticed that my active session was located to Mount Laurel, NJ. At that point I ran a search in Google for 'my public IP', which returned an interesting result: a string of characters in the following format: 2601:8:b000:xxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx Normally, a search for my IP returns something like: 67.xxx.xx.xxx A phone call to Comcast got me nowhere, but using Comcast's phone-menu debugging tools, I was able to send a 'refresh signal' to my modem. After that, the search for 'my public IP' yielded the expected result... for about 5 minutes, and then it returned to the new string of characters. Does anyone know of an explanation for this?

• Router loses connection to internet randomly

  I have a Belkin wireless G plus Mimo router and it randomly loses the connection to the internet. It seems to happen for a second or two, not enough to impact day to day browsing. But enough to disconnect games, or stall videos I am watching. It happens whether I am plugged into the router or connecting via wifi. I am unsure if it is my router or Comcast that is causing this issue. If I connect a computer directly to the modem the problem never occurs, so that tells me it is probably the router. But I also had a Netgear wireless router WGR614, and it had the same problem. I don't know where to start looking for the source of the problem. What logs should I be combing through? All my machines are win 7 of varying versions.

• Port forwarding through a client bridge

  I am having a problem with port forwarding with a client bridge. My main router is a 2wire router from AT&T using their firmware. It is a Router/Modem. In my room, there is a Linksys WRT54GL with DD-WRT on it. I have set up the DD-WRT one as a Client bridge for my PC. I can access the internet on my computer using it but when I try and port forward, the ports stay closed. I am port forwarding on my main router (2wire) and it doesn't work. I have checked online and all I see is that I should only need to forward on the main router since the client bridge has NAT disabled, but it seems to not work that way. Any ideas?
