  • Excel File Names not Displayed

    Problem: When excel windows are minimised, I can't see the file name, all I get is a rather unhelpful 'Microsoft Excel' proceeded by the file name. I have the taskbar docked on the left, and have second monitor that I use about 50% of the time, but can't work out what is causing the problem, or a setting that I can change that will remove the appended software name at the beginning of the file.   • Copy photos from memory card (How do I manually start the wizard?)

    I want to copy photos from my camera's memory card using Windows photo copy wizard, however I'm not connecting the camera directly (I lost the cable) rather I'm inserting the camera's SD memory card into the memory card's slot. Windows (Vista) recognizes the memory card and I can explore the photos but it doesn't automatically launch the "Device connected, what do you want to do" wizard. How do I manually launch the photo copy wizard?

  • hiberfil.sys and pagefile.sys... rebuilt on boot?

    I need to take an image of a drive. I'm working from a bootable CD, so I have the option to decruft before taking the image. The Windows installation on the drive has both hyberfil.sys and pagefile.sys which I would rather not include in the image. If I delete these from the drive, will Windows recreate these files if necessary? EDIT The Windows installation on the drive in question was shut-down cleanly.

  • How to exit vncconfig process properly

    On CentOS 5.7, when open up a vncconfig, a tray icon shows on the taskbar. Hit close or the x button to close the vncconfig doesn't exit the vncconfig, the tray icon is still there. Next time, if I open up another vncconfig rather than clicking the one on taskbar. There will be another vncconfig tray icon added to the taskbar. Except using kill $pid to remove the tray icon, is there any other way to exit the vncconfig process properly? See screenshot below:

  • montoring service to detect when email is not received

    I would like to monitor an email server - not whether the port is open and receiving, but rather that a "canary" message sent every so often actually arrives somewhere else. I have had a problem with a server getting firewalled off and no one noticing that cron jobs are not coming from the machine for a few weeks. Of course, the machine itself cannot send out a notification if it is having problems, so this requires an outside service. Any ideas?

    It's just good common sense to have your server gzip your files before they send them to users (I use Nginx) Is there anyway to save the server some overhead and pre-zip those files for the server, and if not why? For instance rather than giving the server an myscript.js and having the server zip the file and send it to the user, is there a way to create myscript.js.zip so the server doesn't have to?

    I've been working with linux for a while but in a rather simple manner. I understand that scripts in init.d are executed when the os starts but how exactly does it works? How does the os know which paramater to pass to a script? To start apache I would do sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 start. If I run sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 it doesn't work without the start. How does the os pass start to the script?

    If I run a program from the shell, and it segfaults: $ buggy_program Segmentation fault It will tell me, however, is there a way to get programs to print a backtrace, perhaps by running something like this: $ print_backtrace_if_segfault buggy_program Segfault in main.c:35 (rest of the backtrace) I'd also rather not use strace or ltrace for that kind of information, as they'll print either way...

  • What is the recommended approach to add static subdomains to a website?

    I would like to create a few static subdomains like: mycategory.mydomain.com in a rather small website and would like it to point to the folder: mydomain.com/mycategory without showing such redirection in browser address bar. What is an easiest way to achieve it? I can do it in either IIS settings, asp.net, C# code, etc I guess there are better ways then creating a few separate Sites in IIS - one for each subdomain.

    Given a data sample like Prisoner 24601 0.50 Day 1 80 90 Day 2 81 89 Day 3 82 90 Day 4 81 91 What's the easiest way to tell Excel that 24601 and 0.50 are data series names rather than Y axis values when creating a line chart? Approaches I'm aware of: Turn Prisoner numbers into text by having ="24601" and ="0.50" Only select rows 2 onwards as data, and then add in the labels once the graph has been created? Approaches that don't appear to work: Ask Excel to format the first row's numbers as text.

    I'm wondering where to find detailed information regarding the Microsoft Advanced Windows Firewall command line settings. For instance, from reading a couple technet articles I've learned that I can run the following: netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”File and Printer Sharing” new enable=Yes The bit about 'group="File and Printer Sharing"' is the part I'm having trouble finding documentation for. Simply setting the article's Access Level to Restricted makes it disappear rather than prompting for a login. I can't figure out how to make a login page because I can't find any menu items or documentation pertaining to mod_login. I want to set at least one page to require login access. Where do I start?

  • How can you turn off alternate screen in OSX's Terminal.app?

    altscreen is evil. If you don't know what I'm talking about, see this page for visual demonstration. Problem is, there doesn't seem to be a way to stop it with Terminal.app (under OSX), when you're not using screen. Yes, you can edit terminfo definition, but that's rather blunt hammer. Plus that solution might break if Apple decides to update relevant term's definition in some patch. Is there some clean way to convince Terminal.app to block altscreen usage?

I have read the answers in this question but if it's possible I'd rather not resort to start a third party program like insomnia every time I want to listen to music.     I need to send a CtrlAltDelete to a remote machine through Remote Desktop. The CtrlAltDelete is being intercepted by Windows 8, regardless of whether the remote desktop has focus or is in full screen. I'm remoting in to a Windows XP machine, and I've tried launching Remote Desktop through both the desktop and the Modern UI. How can I send a CtrlAltDelete? I'd rather not install anything on the machine.

    I'm looking for recommendations on how to automate / simplify deployment from a git repository (github) to a hosting service. The hosting service supports FTP (yuck) / SSH / SFTP access. Any good tools out there to give push-button deployment of new revisions? I know it's not a hard script to write, but when you start thinking about things like roll-back and multiple sites, it gets complicated enough that I'd rather not re-invent the wheel.

  • How can I use a keyfile on a removable USB drive for my encrypted root in Debian?

    Recently set up root encryption with a couple of LVM volumes inside one LUKS volume, and I am just a little confused as to how I would go about getting it to automatically unlock using a keyfile stored on a USB flash drive, I presume I would have to put the drive in the fstab inside my initramfs (if there is one), and add a hook for USB device support. But I digress, essentially, I want to know what I have to do to enable my LUKS volume (containing all of my partitions sans /boot) to unlock using a keyfile stored on a USB flash drive, rather than a manually entered passphrase.
