  • Windows 8: Paradigm Shift

You've probably heard a lot about the loss of the Start button in Windows 8. While it isn't completely lost - you can still get to it via a convoluted path - its disappearance is merely a sign of the rethinking that went into the operating system's creation. Window 8's designers made certain assumptions while building the new system: Users will interact with the operating system predominantly through a touch interface. Users will do their computing on mobile devices, and may in fact use several different devices for the same purposes. They may even want to get work done on devices they do n...

  • Kworker consuming %100 CPU

    - by yusuf
I have a process, named kworker which is continuously consuming 100% of the CPU's computing capacity. I have tried several possible solutions over a period of 3 months, but to no avail. I even got to upgrade to u + 1 (Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal), but my effort was, again, fruitless. I desperately need some help, because, as is, this process is draining my computer's battery so fast, that makes linux usage a disappointing experience. It is noteworthy, that I do not have any such issues when I use windows, which results in twice as much battery life.

  • 'Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0' 64x Sql Server and 86x Office???

    - by Chris
The error: OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0' cannot be used for distributed queries because the provider is configured to run in single-threaded apartment mode. And the answers I'm seeing is a conflict between 64 bit Sql Server and 32 bit Office. Is there a way to run an openrowset on Excel into Sql Server? insert into dbo.FiscalCalendar select * from openrowset('Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0', 'Excel 12.0 Xml;Database=C:\Users\v-chrha\Desktop\fy11.xlsx;', 'Select * from [Sheet1]')

  • Can I use Microsoft Chart Control in Mono?

    - by user144182
Did some googling and couldn't find a clear answer on this. My assumption is no if they are distributed in a binary form. I currently use Dundas and would like to move away from a library that has a cost component, especially since the MS version has everything I need.

  • Glassfish v2 alternatedocroot - will DAS sync it?

    - by ring bearer
Using Sun Glassfish Enterprise server v2.1.1 I am using "alternatedocroot" via sun-web.xml for my web application to abstract out static content from actual deploy-able code (EAR/WAR) What I have is a cluster of two server instances distributed across two physical hosts - HOST1 and HOST2. "alternatedocroot" points to /data/static-content/ on both HOST1 and HOST2. Would DAS (Domain application server )take care of syncing /data/static-content between HOST1 and HOST2 if I use syncinstances=true option while starting up the cluster? Thanks!

  • Eye candy in OpenGL

    - by anon
I'm interested in creating realtime visual special effects. I am limited to OpenGL (in particular, computing power of a MacBook Pro). I want to learn more about doing cool UI/special effects (think the "computers/displays" in Iron Man / Avatar). What are good books/resources for this? Thanks!

  • Future of Subversion?

    - by Achilles
After reading Joel's last blog posting and having been a recent adopter of Subversion, I was wondering if anyone had any insight as to what the future of Subversion might be? Will the product evolve to accommodate distributed development or is it at the end of its life?

  • Using [assembly: System.Runtime.CompilerServices.InternalsVisibleTo("System.Windows")] To expose Int

    - by Anthony
Ok so I had a qustion awhile back regarding Silverlight 4 Data Binding with anonymous types, one of the answers was to use [assembly: System.Runtime.CompilerServices.InternalsVisibleTo("System.Windows")] in your AssemblyInfo.cs file. I tried this and it works! I know I'm making all my internal properties classes and methods visible to the System.Windows Assembley. But what kind of risk is this with the following in mind: The product is a hosted silverlight based web application, so it wont be distributed. Thanks in advance

  • Algorithm putting point into square with maximal minimum distance

    - by Mikulas Dite
I'm stuck on this: Have a square. Put n points into this square so the minimal distance (not necessary the average distance) is the highest possible. I'm looking for an algorithm which would be able to generate the coordinates of all points given the count of them. Example results for n=4;5;6: Please don't mention computing-power based stuff such as trying a lot of combination and then nitpicking the right one and similar ideas.

  • Access Error when running windows program

    - by JPJedi
I have a windows form application that uses microsoft access for the database on the backend. When I run that application I get an error that says access is not installed on the computer. I thought that if I included the reference that it will be included with what I release so the user would not have to have access installed. How do I include the Access Runtime to be distributed/installed when my application is installed?

  • What parts of this book are outdated? "Design of the UNIX Operating System" by Maurice Bach, 1986

    - by blee
I learned programming on the job via high-level languages. I'm trying to gain a better understanding of the lower-level workings of computing and picked up "Design of the UNIX Operating System" by Maurice Bach. What do I need to know in terms of which topics in this book may not be relevant to understanding Linux nuts and bolts? Is there a newer book or Linux-specific book that I should read instead? I really like the clarity of this particular book, though.

  • MSDTC and Multiple Databases with Entity Framework.

    - by Patrick
In my code I'm attempting to use a transaction using TransactionScope with Entity Framework. While in this transaction we are opening a regular SQL connection to a seperate server and database. When the conn.Open() is called we get an Error: "Network access for Distributed Transaction Manager (MSDTC) has been disabled. Please enable DTC for network access in the security configuration for MSDTC using the Componet Services Administrative tool." However, MSDTC is enabled and running on the Server.

  • users authentication and dht

    - by mtasic
Lets say that I have only DHT (distributed hash table) implemented (in Python), and I want to build authentication service over P2P network, but without introducing centralized authentication server with such a service. Can it be done, and if so how can I achieve this? I'm familiar with how Skype and Wuala have done this, but I am looking for decentralized solution without single point of failure.
