• What is the history of why bytes are eight bits?

  What where the historical forces at work, the tradeoffs to make, in deciding to use groups of eight bits as the fundamental unit ? There were machines, once upon a time, using other word sizes, but today for non-eight-bitness you must look to museum pieces, specialized chips for embedded applications, and DSPs. How did the byte evolve out of the chaos and creativity of the early days of computer design? I can imagine that fewer bits would be ineffective for handling enough data to make computing feasible, while too many would have lead to expensive hardware. Were other influences in play? Why did these forces balance out to eight bits? (BTW, if I could time travel, I'd go back to when the "byte" was declared to be 8 bits, and convince everyone to make it 12 bits, bribing them with some early 21st Century trinkets.)

• Box2Dweb very slow on node.js

  I'm using Box2Dweb on node.js. I have a rotated box object that I apply an impulse to move around. The timestep is set at 50ms, however, it bumps up to 100ms and even 200ms as soon as I add any more edges or boxes. • Can I install Ubuntu 12.04 on MacBook 6.1 (Late 2009) on my external hard drive?

  I have no experience in installing Linux based OS on MacBook, but I already have Windows installed on my Mac. I read some articles saying I can have the Lucid Lynx installed in my Macbook 6.1 and luckily I already got the CD (which was distributed for free back then haha), my question is that can I have the 12.04 installed instead of the 10.04 and what do I need to do that? I also would like to know can I install it on my external hard drive just like installing it on a usb stick? I have viewed the how-to for installing the Lucid Lynx, is it just the same? • Is there a quick way to convert camera raw files to DNG?

  Before I switched from Windows to Ubuntu for my daily computing, I used Adobe's Photoshop Lightroom for processing photos from my DSLR. Adobe made it really straightforward to convert from proprietary camera raw files (in my case, .NEF) to DNG. I haven't found any way to convert NEF to DNG in Ubuntu yet. Most photography programs do process NEFs to JPG/TIFF/PNG/etc., but I'm looking for a converter for archival purposes. Are there any tools available, either standalone or built into another app, that can losslessly convert from NEF to DNG?

• Handling (many) multiple projects in Git in an enterprise environment

  One of the advantages of older version control systems such as CVS and SVN in enterprise development is that anyone can connect to source control and see all the projects that the company has. This can make it easier to get a high level view of what kid of development is happening outside your sprint and also keeps everything in one place and easy to find. However, distributed version control systems (Git, specifically) use the repository as their base unit. They work best with one project (or several closely related projects) per repository. This makes repository management more difficult in most enterprise environments where it is not unusual to have more than 25-50 projects to support. As far as I have been able to determine, you have to keep a list somewhere else of all the repos you have. There is software available, like GitHub, that help, but that still is an extra step beyond a single connection string and listing the contents of the repository. What is the best way to deal with the complexity of multiple repositories?

  Is there some way when I'm in Ubuntu 12.10 that I can set it to reboot automatically to Windows just once, so that when I'm in Windows I can reboot and it will automatically boot back into Ubuntu? I need this because often when I travel I access my home computer for email and other personal info that I don't want to travel with or leave to the tender mercies of the "cloud". On rare occasions, I need to temporarily boot into Windows 7 to do something Windows-specific, but then I want to be able to boot back into Ubuntu because that's where most of my computing takes place. Our website servers are located in one place. We can't distribute our site to different locations. How can we create a local IP in each location to show our main server. so google will see us as local ip. Explanation: Google has decided to increase your PR if you have a local IP, they think that if you bought a server in a local market means that you are very serious about your business. • Counting product releases if you work on the backend/online services?

  I am trying to update my resume, and I would like to count the number of "product releases" that I was directly involved in with a company. It would seem to serve as a performance metric. The problem is that I was working on the backend of a very large distributed system, like along the lines of Hadoop or other huge database. We had regular 6-month major releases and other minor releases. My manager kept saying that "shipped" these releases, but "shipping" a product to me sounds like releasing single pieces of software, like Microsoft would ship Office 11 or something. Any ideas on "product releases" for backend service engineers, or any other type of performance metric?

• Effecient finding of long-range spotting targets

  I'm creating a top-down 2d strategy game, with a square grid map. So far, I've used Bresenham's line drawing algorithm in a circle to determine what's in LOS of each unit, and then targedt one of the targets in the circle. Now I find that this limits my units to shoot only at targets that they see. I want to extend my targeting algorithm to target any other unit in range of my weapon, even if they're out of sight range of this given unit, if they're "spotted" by another friendly unit. In other words, I want to enable usage of weapons with ranges longer than sight range. Is there a better way than iterating over all sighted units and computing range and LOSto each of them?

• What is the current frequency of my processor (CPU-Z equivalent)?

  Is there a ubuntu program like CPU-Z which will show me the actual frequency of my processor? I do a fair amount of scientific computing which leads to me running my programs for up to 10 hrs. To alleviate this problem a little I overclock my CPU. However I can't see what the actual clock of my processor from within ubuntu which means I either have to restart and look at the bios or load into windows. If there was an applet or command line command to find out this information it would be very helpful. Thanks for your help

  I'd like to try programming with punch cards once in my life. How can I do this? I'm in my 30s, and grew up entirely in the PC era, programming on computers with screens and keyboards. I want to experience the way my father and grandfather used to work. I imagine the hardware (and probably the cards themselves) are no longer manufactured. Are there any universities or museums with functioning punch card readers anymore? I'm in Boston, but I'm willing to travel to do this. I asked MetaFilter, and I got some mixed answers (along with a lot of "no, don't do this" nay-saying). I did get a pointer to the Retro-Computing Society Of Rhode Island, but I haven't received a response to my email to them yet.
