• How do I allow Ubuntu to use more space on my computer?

  Ubuntu currently won't use more than 4GiBs on my computer, but I need more space. My computer can hold much more than 4GiBs. How do I allow Ubuntu to use more? Please give step-by-step instructions in plain English. Update: I'm referring to my Ubuntu operating system. I installed it using Wubi through Microsoft Windows. I deleted Wubi from my Windows desktop after installation. All I want is to expand my Ubuntu operating system. I plan to gradually transition from Windows to Ubuntu and so I'll need to transfer more files and programs from Windows to Ubuntu in the future. Right now, I already need more GiBs for Ubuntu. I can barely use Ubuntu right now because there's almost no space left. I simply want Ubuntu to use what space I need it to use. People, please quit complicating this issue and inform me how to make Ubuntu use more space.

• Is there a definitive reference on Pinball playfield design?

  I'm looking at designing tables for Future Pinball but I'm not sure where to start as I've little background in game design per se. I've played scores of pinball tables over the years so I've a fairly good idea of what is "fun" in those terms. However, I'd like to know if there is a definitive "bible" of pinball design as far as layout and scoring/mode design goes. I've looked but there doesn't seem to be anything really coherent that I could find. Is it simply a lost art or am I missing some buried gem?

I am new in programming and like to idea of ROR and I am before the decision on which programing language to specialize Java vs ROR. In the future I wish to learn for bigger international IT companies (IBM, Accenture etc.) but as I am reading their job openings, most of them are hiring Java, C++, .NET... Is the ROR used only in startups or also in bigger companies as well? What should be the reasons of their preference of Java over ROR?

  I am a CS major. I've taken 2 courses in C (Intro to C and CS1) and 1 introductory course to OOP with Java. I really like Java and feel that I have a firm understanding of OOP concepts. I am really interested in web development and would like to learn a programming language that can be used to build dynamic web applications. My question is what language should I learn? I've narrowed it down to python or ruby. Also, I want to learn a programming language that will help me get a job upon graduating. So essentially, I will use this particular language to build applications that will help me get a job in the future.

• Dell monitor not detected (Ubuntu 11.10)

  I have an issue with my monitor. I just installed Ubuntu 11.10, but the monitor that is plugged in doesn't appear anywhere. And by doesn't appear, I mean that in the "Displays" menu, it doesn't even appear as "Unknown", I just have my screen that appears and nothing else. It is connected through VGA, and the monitor is recognized with no problem on Windows 7. It is a Dell monitor. I'm not a pro with Ubuntu, so any help to diagnose the issue would be really helpful (and help me learn how to fix this kind of monitor issue in the future) Thanks !

  I was wondering if someone could help me how to manage temporarily inactive website in regards of SEO and search engine. the case is i managed a big ecommerce site, and sometime i need to put down page(s). could be days, could be weeks, could be months, and it depends on our vendor. if my visitors land on the page that been temporarily inactive then i can give them a message that the vendor they looking for is not available at this time and he can check back later OR check another vendor with similar products, but how do i send my message to search engine robots? if i use 301 status and forward URL page to another similar products, then the chance that the current URL being deindex is huge while i still want to use that URL for the future if my vendor want to re-join. any advise will highly appriciated

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I'm having trouble choosing a host that meets my application's needs. Please kindly inform me what I should look for when choosing a web host. My application is similar to a reminder service that reminds users of events that they scheduled. I'm sending emails to users through a PHP script. I'm not sending one email to multiple recipients. Each recipient receives a different message. I plan to use cron jobs every minute and expect the application to send roughly 200 individual emails in 1 hour (for a small user base that may grow). I don't have hosting experience with this type of application. I plan to start on a shared host and move up in the future to vps or dedicated. Most shared hosts that I looked into allow 50-100 emails per hour with delays between mailings. What do you recommend?

• What programming language matches this description? [on hold]

  I am looking for a functional language that is basically dynamic programming - i.e. one where functions are first-class objects - but where all function calls are asynchronous by default; i.e. you define function X(a,b) = (Y(a)+Z(b)), and when X() is called, it sees it is waiting for the return from two functions, runs one in the current thread, and spawns a new thread to run the other. The future is very much parallel processing; multiple cores, multiple machines, the internet of things, etc. and I was wondering if there was a language specifically designed to make this kind of parallelization easy. I currently have only used imperative languages (c, php, java, ruby, etc), so I don't know anything about what kind of functional languages are available.

• Ubuntu 14.04 not booting before Windows 8.1

  I try too boot my computer into Ubuntu, but I end up having to manually select Ubuntu from the devices menu, even though it was supposed to boot first. Instead Windows 8 boots up like Ubuntu isn't even there! And GRUB works just fine when Ubuntu is selected in the boot device menu. (How else am I on?) I tried using EasyBCD but kept getting errors from the windows boot manager. And just in case it helps, during installation of Ubuntu it didn't recognize windows 8, and I had to resize and install manually. Anything I can do? Notes: EVERYONE!!! GRUB WORKS PERFECTLY!!! IT IS AN ERROR IN THE HP BOOT MENU AS I HAVE PREVIOUSLY SAID!!! PLEASE DO NOT GIVE ME ANSWERS FOR GRUB EDITS IN THE FUTURE!!!   I've bought VMware Workstation 8 just today. After the installation I launched it and the application noticed me that "several modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel". During the process, VMware noticed me that was impossible to configure Virtual Network Devices and at the end, was impossible to start the services. The last message said that further information could be found at this address: /tmp/vmware-root-975001794/modconfig-22789.log So, I've pasted the content of the log message here. Can you help me or, rather, you suggest to wait for future updates of Ubuntu? My desktop environment is Unity.

• Am I making the right decision to take Information technology/system as my course in college?

  I am a student who just ended my high school last year. I will be entering college any time between march to August. And.. I am thinking of studying Information technology/System as my course in college. The problem is, I am unsure if this is the right path for me. • How to make Classic ASP interesting if you are stuck with it?

  I used to work on a really small outsourcing company (4 programmers and the boss), then when the stress and the frequent long shifts made the situation unbearable I made the switch to a better paid job with a more relaxed schedule that allows me some more free time. The problem, however, is that for the most part, everything is coded in Classic ASP that interfaces with a custom made C++ queueing system that stores everything in AS400 systems. My boss used to be one of the developers that made the initial efforts towards this, and naturally won't ever approve a switch to another languages / technologies despite the increasing difficulty that represents developing today business needs with yesterday tools. I'm pretty much stuck coding with Classic ASP in the foreseeable future, and I'm struggling to find ways to make it at least interesting, as I used to work with .NET and Java previously, and I feel like I'm going backwards... Any advice?

• Where can I get the 11.04 kernel .config file?

  I'm using Maverick with the latest available kernels on kernel.org and building them myself. Until now I've been basing my configuration off the stock Maverick kernel and accepting the make oldconfig defaults. I've been doing this for 3 major releases now so I figure I'm starting to slip behind the current "standard". I would like to re-base my kernels off the new Natty .config file. Is this available somewhere online or do I have to download the whole kernel package and extract it? Edit: I've manually pulled in the config from the latest Natty kernel package and I can confirm that I propbably should have done this sooner. A lot of differences between my old "evolved" config and the Natty default. Now if I could just do this without 20 minutes of hunting and downloading the package so I can re-base in the future.

  There is no official API for Google Voice. However, many of the operations are done via simple rest style http calls, so building one shouldn’t be too difficult. Digging deeper and rolling your own is always a great way to exercise your problem solving skills and learn new things. So I did just that. As of the time of writing this, I’m only implementing basic SMS send since that’s all I needed. I’m hoping to implement more functionality in the future.
