• Legal issues in Europe: check patents ?

  We live in Europe and are releasing commercial software in multiple countries. Besides of the licensing issues (GPL/LGPL/...) we have a question about patents. I know that if you're in the US, before you release software, you have to check if there aren't any patents you're infringing upon. I also know most of these patents or usually irrational and form a heavy burden on developers/software engineers. Now, as far as I know, EU rules are lots more ratinal, but there has been lobbying to also apply the same rules in EU. http://www.nosoftwarepatents.com http://www.stopsoftwarepatents.eu So what's the deal actually ? You should not, of course, knowingly violate a software patent. However, there is a small but real chance some company will sue you for violating their patent. This may happen even if you develop your software independently, you never heard of the patent, and the patent covers a technique that is intuitively obvious and almost completely unrelated to your software. There is not a lot you can do to avoid this, given the current USPTO policies, other than buy insurance. The good news is that patent trolls generally sue large companies with lots of money.

• Powerpoint file can be deleted without consequence

  I am working on a license management type application that copies a password protected zip file to the applications root. The user clicks a button "Open Presentation" and the zipped file is extracted into the root folder and then I use the Office interop to open the file in Powerpoint. At this point to my surprise I am able to delete the extracted file that is currently open in the Powerpoint application. I had assumed that trying to delete the file would fail as the file is still open in Powerpoint. Why is it allowing me to delete the file? Is the file somehow copied to a temp folder and then opened in PowerPoint? Can I move forward with the application relying on this ability to delete the file as soon as it is opened in Powerpoint? This would be optimal because it helps insure that the file cannot be copied(I am also using the xml to stop "Save As" and "Save" from appearing int Powerpoint). Thanks for the insight, John

• Is there something like a Filestorage class to store files in?

  Is there something like a class that might be used to store Files and directories in, just like the way Zip files might be used? Since I haven't found any "real" class to write Zip files (real class as in real class), It would be nice to be able to store Files and Directories in a container-like file. A perfect API would probably look like this: int main() { ContainerFile cntf("myContainer.cnt", ContainerFile::CREATE); cntf.addFile("data/some-interesting-stuff.txt"); cntf.addDirectory("data/foo/"); cntf.addDirectory("data/bar/", ContainerFile::RECURSIVE); cntf.close(); } ... I hope you get the Idea. Important Requirements are: The Library must be crossplatform anything *GPL is not acceptable in this case (MIT and BSD License are) I already played with the thought of creating an Implentation based on SQLite (and its ability to store binary blobs). Unfortunately, it seems impossible to store Directory structures in a SQLite Database, which makes it pretty much useless in this case. Is it useless to hope for such a class library?

• What to use to create bar, line and pie charts with javascript compatible with all major browsers?

  I used to work with flot but it doesn't support pie charts so I'm forced to change. I just saw JS Charts, but their documentation is very obscure regarding cross browser compatibility (I need it to be IE6+ compliant :). Also this will be for commercial use, so I'd rather have something that I can use free of charge jQuery Google chart looks really nice and is well integrated with rails (the framework I'm using) but I'm not sure how good it is. So what do you guys use? What would you recommend keeping in mind that: It will be for commercial use (I can deal with a license, but I'd rather avoid that) It needs to be javascript (no svg, no flash please) It needs to be compatible with IE6+, FF, Chrome, Opera and Safari It needs to be pretty ^^ If it uses jQuery it's even better

• Signable, streamable, "readable" archive format?

  Is there any archive format that offers the following: be digitally sign-able with a digital certificate from a trusted source like Verisign - for preventing changes to the file (I am not referring to read only, but in case the file was changed it should no longer be signed telling the user this is not the original file) be stream-able - be able to be opened even if not all of the content has been transfered (also not strictly linearly) be "readable" - be able to read the data without extracting to a temporary folder (AFAIK if you open a file in a zip archive it is extracted first, and this stays true even for zip based formats like OOXML. This is not what I want) be portable - support on at least Windows, Linux and Mac OS X is a must, or at least future support be free of patents - Be open source - also preferably a license that allows commercial use(as far as i know GPL a share-alike licence so it doesn't allow comercial use, BSD on the other hand alows it) Note: Though it may come in handy eventually I can not think right now of a scenario that would require both point 1 and point 2 simultaneously. Or lets leave it a be able to check the signature only when the whole file was downloaded. I am not interested in: being able to be compressed being supported on legacy systems Does any existing archive format fit this description (tar evolutions like DAR and pax come to mind) ? If there is, are there programing libraries available for the above mentioned OSs? If not, would it be hard to create such a thing? • Where does one get Visual Source Safe 2005?

  I would like to install VSS 2005 so I can work on a project that is stored under it. Does anyone have any idea where the VSS 2005 client can be obtained? It does not appear to be on my VS2005 install disc (although that is for Team Suite). I cannot get any help from Google. I have an MSDN license (AA edition) but it doesn't seem to be there. This is a real product right? Just to clarify preemptively based on some of the discussions I see on Google when I search for things like "VSS 2005," I am aware of the flaws in VSS and I still need to get it working; I am not interested in converting the project to Subversion; I am not able to transfer it to TFS; I am not able to upgrade the project to VS2008. • Real time embeddable http server library required

  Having looked at several available http server libraries I have not yet found what I am looking for and am sure I can't be the first to have this set of requirements. I need a library which presents an API which is 'pipelined'. Pipelining is used to describe an HTTP feature where multiple HTTP requests can be sent across a TCP link at a time without waiting for a response. I want a similar feature on the library API where my application can receive all of those request without having to send a response (I will respond but want the ability to process multiple requests at a time to reduce the impact of internal latency). So the web server library will need to support the following flow 1) HTTP Client transmits http request 1 2) HTTP Client transmits http request 2 ... 3) Web Server Library receives request 1 and passes it to My Web Server App 4) My Web Server App receives request 1 and dispatches it to My System 5) Web Server receives request 2 and passes it to My Web Server App 6) My Web Server App receives request 2 and dispatches it to My System 7) My Web Server App receives response to request 1 from My System and passes it to Web Server 8) Web Server transmits HTTP response 1 to HTTP Client 9) My Web Server App receives response to request 2 from My System and passes it to Web Server 10) Web Server transmits HTTP response 2 to HTTP Client Hopefully this illustrates my requirement. There are two key points to recognise. Responses to the Web Server Library are asynchronous and there may be several HTTP requests passed to My Web Server App with responses outstanding. Additional requirements are Embeddable into an existing 'C' application Small footprint; I don't need all the functionality available in Apache etc. Efficient; will need to support thousands of requests a second Allows asynchronous responses to requests; their is a small latency to responses and given the required request throughput a synchronous architecture is not going to work for me. Support persistent TCP connections Support use with Server-Push Comet connections Open Source / GPL support for HTTPS Portable across linux, windows; preferably more. • Is it possible to use HTTPS certificates for licensing?

  I am working on an application with multiple clients and a server running various web-services for the clients. To implement licensing I am thinking about using HTTPS as a protocol for the web-services using certificates that are issued by our company. By influencing the expiration date of a certificate for a client we can prevent them from using our software after their license term. It this possible and does it make sense to you? Additional information: I am planning on using Qt/C++ for the clients, and the Twisted framework for the web-services.

• Error while including j2ssh in a j2me midlet

  I obtained an evaluation license for j2ssh maverick, downloaded the library and included the j2me jar into my project. But i get the following error when i try to run/build the project (in netbeans, using WTK 3.0) Error preverifying class com.maverick.events.J2SSHEventMessages VERIFIER ERROR com/maverick/events/J2SSHEventMessages.class$(Ljava/lang/String;)Ljava/lang/Class;: Cannot find class java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError I get the same error when i use eclipse (error in preverifying stage). Any pointers ? There are more than one NoClassDefFoundErrors in the preverifying stage. Am i using the wrong .jar file ?

  Can Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Web Edition be used in "closed" websites, which are hosted on the Internet, but require users to log in? We are developing a web application for banks. This is a website for clients of the bank; it allows clients to log in and view information on their personal banking accounts, stock portfolios, etc. Can this web app use SQL Server 2008 Web Edition? Here is information on this edition of SQL Server: http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/en/us/web.aspx It is said on this page that Web Edition can be used only on "public and Internet accessible ... Web applications". Technically, the web app we are developing is public and Internet accessible - although it requires authentication. • Cached/offline maps for iPhone?

  I'd like to use use maps in my application, so that there will be as less as possible traffic. Perfect solution would be caching of map slices. I know it's not possible with google maps (license). I took a look on OpenStreetMaps and it seems as good solution. The next: SDK. The only one I've found is from CloudMade. The problem is, I found no related API methods for caching/offline calls. Are there any alternative solutions?

While compiling the website Compilation errors are occuring i.e Licenses.licx file is not compiling, if it compile than it will reproduces an AppLicenses.dll. In the licensing.licx file containing one class and a namespace(i.e. OSADirectLicensing.OSADirectLicensedClass, OSADirectLicensing). The compilation error is as follows: Error 1 C:\Program Files\Sharp\Sharp Developer Tools\OSA SDK\Samples\DirectOSA\ExternalAuthority\licenses.licx: Could not transform licenses file into a binary resource. (1) : error LC0004 : Exception occurred creating type 'OSADirectLicensing.OSADirectLicensedClass, OSADirectLicensing, Version=1.0.4006.31768, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null System.ComponentModel.LicenseException: Invalid License at System.ComponentModel.LicenseManager.CreateWithContext(Type type, LicenseContext creationContext, Object[] args) at System.ComponentModel.LicenseManager.CreateWithContext(Type type, LicenseContext creationContext) at System.Tools.LicenseCompiler.GenerateLicenses(String fileContents, String targetPE, ITypeResolutionService resolver, DesigntimeLicenseContext ctx)' . • Is it ok to put any existing open-source project into github?

  This question is more about Open-Source etiquette, and the new approach that the likes of github and gitorious gives to collaboration and source ownership. Can you just take any Open-Source project from somewhere else (e.g SourceForge, with a clear project team and community) and put it into your own github repository, provided that you respect the terms of the original license? And if yes, do you keep your version under the same name, or change it? I somehow have this nagging feeling that this is rude, and yet it is open-source after all...

• MySQLPython is ignoring my my.cnf file. Where does it get its information?

My my.cnf file states: [client] port = 3306 socket = /tmp/mysql/mysql.sock [safe_mysqld] socket = /tmp/mysql/mysql.sock [mysqld_safe] socket = /tmp/mysql/mysql.sock [mysqld] socket = /tmp/mysql/mysql.sock port = 3306 and the mysql.sock file is, indeed, located in /tmp/mysql I verified that ~/.my.cnf and /var/lib/mysql/my.cnf aren't overriding it. • API to lookup product information by UPC?

  Is there an API that allows lookup of product information by UPC? I know that Amazon has the Product Advertising API but don't think it can be used for any purpose other than sending traffic to amazon.com as per their license agreement here. Specifically, my application would not have the principal purpose of advertising and marketing the Amazon Site and driving sales of products and services on the Amazon Site Does such an API exist that I can do anything I want with the data? UPDATE I would want to use the API for my application, not create create such an API.

• How to protect HtmlHelper code in MVC controls

  I am writing a custom mvc control (commercial), and all of the control's code lives in the custom htmlhelper code that i will have to distribute to the user. I am ok with this for my commercial license sale, but for evaluating the controls, if i give out the htmlhelper code locally for my potential customers to evaluate, the user can simply "get" all the code and hence he may never buy it since he's got teh control code. How do i protect my htmlhelper code while somebody is evaluation my cusotm mvc controls? Is this a general problem or (I wish) i am missing something here? Thanks.

• What can a company possibly gain by making Android phones hard to root?

  As someone who recently got a HTC Hero, I had to jump through several hoops to get root access on the phone to install custom firmware. Now, Android is open-source and fairly easy to build and hack on an emulator. It seems to be against the spirit of open-source to lock down a phone so you can't hack the phone itself. Now, often, there are understandable (though not always justifiable) reasons for locking a device down. For example, it might have proprietary software on it or you might want to retain control of the platform. However, Android by its open-source nature makes such concerns moot. Everyone and their dog has access to the userland code, and HTC is forced by the GPL to release kernel sources for each of their devices. So, I fail to see any motivation for alienating the hackers, when there is no possible benefit (in my mind) to be had from doing this. Any idea why a company would want to do this? Is it just short-sightedness or am I missing possible commercial implications of this?

• Postgres vs Firebird

  I'm looking to use either Firebird or Postgres in my next development project ... largely because both are available under a BSD-like license. I found a great comparison of the two database at http://www.amsoftwaredesign.com/pg_vs_fb But this comparison is a good 2+ years old and both databases have come a long ways since. Does anyone mind updating the comparison table to be relevant for the current versions of both Firebird and Postgres ... or have a link to a site that does a good recent comparison between the two database?
