    All the examples of accessing google's CDN use https:// in the URL (including on Google itself) - but this has caused a problem when testing in Safari (certificate problem and also different domain). <script type="text/javascript" src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4.2/jquery.min.js"></script> I have switched to calling it over http instead, but just wondering if this is a mistake or security issue?

    Note: I always forget this stuff, so I'm putting it my blog to help me remember it.Calling a JSON REST based service with some params isn't that hard.  I have an endpoint that has this interface:        [WebInvoke(UriTemplate = "/Login",             Method="POST",             BodyStyle = WebMessageBodyStyle.Wrapped,            RequestFormat = WebMessageFormat.Json,            ResponseFormat = WebMessageFormat.Json )]        [OperationContract]        bool Login(LoginData ld); The LoginData class is defined like this:    [DataContract]    public class LoginData    {        [DataMember]        public string UserName { get; set; }        [DataMember]        public string PassWord { get; set; }        [DataMember]        public string AppKey { get; set; }    } Now that you see my method to call to login as well as the class that is passed for the login, the body of the login request looks like this:{ "ld" : {  "UserName":"testuser", "PassWord":"ackkkk", "AppKey":"blah" } } The header (in Fiddler), looks like this:User-Agent: FiddlerHost: hostnameContent-Length: 76Content-Type: application/json And finally, my url to POST against is:http://www.something.com/...../someservice.svc/LoginAnd there you have it, calling a WCF JSON Endpoint thru REST (and HTTP POST)

  • Important Note for Enablement Service Pack 1 for UPK 3.6.1

Since this post generated some feedback that this information was not well-known, I thought it would be good to repost, which I've done with permission from Earl Sullivan. This is an FYI for those who have UPK 3.6.1 and applied the Enablement Pack 1. There is a manual database update that is needed to be run. Here is the information: To correct an issue with permissioning in the Library, this Service Pack, issued in March 2010, also contains scripts to update the database on the Oracle Database or MicrosoftSQL server. Once you have run the Setup.exe file for the Service Pack, the necessary script files can be found at the root of the folder where the Developer is installed. These scripts must be run manually according to the instructions below. To update a database located on an Oracle Database server manually: Run the Setup.exe to install the files for the Service Pack. Start SQL*Plus and login with the system account. At the command prompt, enter the path to the AlterSchemaObjects.sql script located at the root of the folder where the Developer is installed. and append the following parameters: schema_owner - There is a limit of 20 characters on the schema owner name. You can find this information in the web.config file located in the Repository.WS in the folder where the server is installed. password - The existing schema owner password. Statement with generic parameters: @C:\AlterSchemaObjects.sql schema_owner password 4. Run the AlterSchemaObjects.sql script. To update a database located on a Microsoft SQL server manually: Run the Setup.exe to install the files for the Service Pack. Log in to the database using the database administrator account. Open and edit the AlterDBObjects.sql file located at the root of the folder where the Developer is installed. Replace the ODServer text with the username used when the database was installed. You can find this information in the web.config file located in the Repository.WS folder in the folder where the server is installed. Change the database from master to the name of the existing Developer database and run the AlterDBObjects.sql script. Note: The database name is the initial catalog in the connection string in the web.config file. Editor's note: The database update fixes a problem with permissions where the permissions for a user will be incorrectly updated when a group that the user was removed from has their permissions changed.

  • A Generic, IDisposable WCF Service Client

    WCF clients need to be cleaned up properly, but as they're usually auto-generated they don't implement IDisposable. I've been doing a fair bit of WCF work recently, so I wrote a generic WCF client wrapper which effectively gives me a disposable service client. The ServiceClientWrapper is constructed using a WebServiceConfig instance, which contains a Binding, an EndPointAddress, and whether the client should ignore SSL certificate errors - pretty useful during testing! The Binding can be created based on configuration data or entirely programmatically - that's not the client's concern.     For the Java EE track at JavaOne 2014 we are highlighting some key sessions and speakers to better inform you of what you can expect, right up until the start of the conference. To this end we recently interviewed Ed Burns. Ed is a veteran of Sun and now Oracle. He has been and is instrumental in pushing the JSF ecosystem forward as specification lead. Besides his specification lead work Ed is well regarded as an author and speaker on his own right. In addition to carrying the JSF torch Ed will be co-leading the key Servlet 4 specification for Java EE 8, along with Servlet specification guru Shing Wai Chan. To this end we recently interviewed Ed Burns. Ed is a veteran of Sun and now Oracle. He has been and is instrumental in pushing the JSF ecosystem forward as specification lead. Besides his specification lead work Ed is well regarded as an author and speaker on his own right. In addition to carrying the JSF torch Ed will be co-leading the key Servlet 4 specification for Java EE 8, along with Servlet specification guru Shing Wai Chan.     Characteristics of a Web service that promote reusability and change:  Standardized Data Exchange Formats (XML, JSON) Standardized communication protocols (Soap, Rest) Promotes Loosely Coupled Systems  Standardized Data Exchange Formats (XML, JSON) XML W3.org defines Extensible Markup Language (XML) as a simplistic text format derived from SGML. XML was designed to solve challenges found in large-scale electronic publishing. In addition,  XML is playing an important role in the exchange of data primarily focusing on data exchange on the web. JSON JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) is a human-readable text-based standard designed for data interchange. This format is used for serializing and transmitting data over a network connection in a structured format. The primary use of JSON is to transmit data between a server and web application. JSON is an alternative to XML. Standardized communication protocols (Soap, Rest) Soap W3Scools.com defines SOAP as a simple XML-based protocol. This protocol lets applications exchange data over HTTP.  SOAP provides a way to communicate between applications running on different operating systems, with different technologies and programming languages. Rest In 2007, Stefan Tilkov defines Representational State Transfer (REST) as a set of principles that outlines how Web standards are supposed to be used.  Using REST in an application will ensure that it exploits the Web’s architecture to its benefit. Promotes Loosely Coupled Systems “Loose coupling as an approach to interconnecting the components in a system or network so that those components, also called elements, depend on each other to the least extent practicable.   • Cloud service and IM protocol advice, for a backend to group chat mobile app

    Overview I’m going to develop an app on Android and iOS. It will allow users to set up group ‘chat rooms’ and talk on chat rooms set up by other users. The service needs to be highly scalable, such that it could accommodate a massive increase in users overnight (we can only dream). Chat requirements The chat protocol used should be flexible: it should allow me to determine who can view/post on ‘chat rooms’ based on certain other factors, as determined by the first poster/creator of the particular ‘chat room’. It should also allow for users to simply install the app and begin using the service, after only providing a simple nickname (which could be changed later). Chat protocol plans Having looked around I think the XMPP protocol is the best candidate. In particular the Multi-user chat extension looks like what I’ll need. Would this be most suited to my requirements, or do you know another potential solution? Cloud service I have been deciding between Amazon Web Services, Google App Engine and Windows Azure. I’m coming to the conclusion that Azure will be best, as it is easier to manage than AWS (ease of scalability will be a key factor in the design), I think it may be less restricted than GAE, plus Azure will soon have toolkits to allow easy interfacing with both Android and iOS phones. Is this the decision you would have made, or would you recommend/look into other cloud services? General project philosophy I have only recently started looking into this project’s feasibility, and am no expert on any of its aspects. So wherever possible I will leave the actual implementations to experts, i.e. choosing a higher-level cloud service, using a well-documented plugin of a, proven reliable, group chat protocol etc. My background I have some programming knowledge from a computer science degree. Main languages I’ve used have been Java and Python, but I don’t want this to affect design decisions for the project. The most appropriate languages for the task should be used, i.e. I don’t mind learning a lot of new skills (my current programming levels are relatively basic anyway).
