• Parallel prologue and epilogue in Grid Engine

  We have a cluster being used to run MPI jobs for a customer. Previously this cluster used Torque as the scheduler, but we are transitioning to Grid Engine 6.2u5 (for some other features). Unfortunately, we are having trouble duplicating some of our maintenance scripts in the Grid Engine environment. In Torque, we have a prologue.parallel script which is used to carry out an automated health-check on the node. If this script returns a fail condition, Torque will helpfully offline the node and re-queue the job to use a different group of nodes. In Grid Engine, however, the queue "prolog" only runs on the head node of the job. We can manually run our prologue script from the startmpi.sh initialization script, for the mpi parallel environment; but I can't figure out how to detect a fail condition and carry out the same "mark offline and requeue" procedure. Any suggestions?

• SQL Server 2005 jobs running twice in a row - using LiteSpeed

  Howdy! I have a SQL server (2005) backing up to a network share, who has a group of maintenance plans setup through LiteSpeed to backup different DBs. They were just set up to run two sub plans on different schedules for full/diff backups and did that just fine for a couple of months. Then I added "Clean Up" task to the subplans. Ever since that point, the backup creates another bak right after the first bak job is completed. I removed the clean up item from the subplan, and it still creates two baks when ran. Both the SQL Activity Monitor and the machine's windows application log show just one job being executed. I did this same thing to a couple of other servers backing up to the same location, and they are behaving correctly. Thoughts?

• Torque and maui node status

  I am new for torque and maui. I was checking for node state to looking for which nodes are free and which nodes are in use. For torque one command is pbsnodes. Which gives status and other info related to node. When I was checking for maui then I found command diagnose -n which also shows status of the node. I was wondering between these 2 status. Both are giving different status for the same situation. When I do man pbsnodes I got the possible states for node "free", "offline", "down", "reserve", "job-exclusive", "job-sharing", "busy", "time-shared", or "state-unknown" But this type of different state I cant find for diagnose -n. How pbsnodes and diagnose -n get the status for node. Is there any database like xCAT use for torque or maui? Thx in advance for your valuable time.

• Connecting a TV remote control to a Windows 7 Desktop?

  I was just wondering how possible it is to connect a remote control to a Windows 7 system. I’m connecting the computer to a 24" TV via HDMI to be used as a TV, playing things mainly through VLC. Clearly I don’t want to have to access the PC every time I want to change something. The problem is that I have no idea how to configure a remote to a PC, or even what remote will do the job. I’m not looking for anything overly flashy or in the $100-$200 range, but something that is functional and will get the job done.

• Automatically Snapshoting AWS instances (or other back up strategy)

  I just realized that my aws instance count has risen into the double digits. I'm currently backing portions of my folders and dbs and moving them off to a backup instance. What I think I should be doing is taking a snapshot of the instances (automatically) and persisting them on S3 so I have a running 7 day collection of daily backups. There is a question asking the same thing here, however the answers don't go into depth. So the closest answer seems to be: use a cron job to snapshot the instance. So do I run the cron job on the instance itself? or do I have a micro instance to run these snapshots? Could I get an example script or the command for say a linux flavor? what software must I have installed to get this to run? Thanks.

• OSX: Selecting default application for all unknown and different file types (extensions)

  I work in cluster computing and am using Mac OS X 10.6. I send off hundreds of computing jobs a day, and each one comes back with with a different extension. For example, svmGeneSelect.o12345 which is the std output of my svmGeneSelect job which is job number 12345. I don't control the extensions. All files are plain text. I want OSX to open any file extension that it hasn't seen before with my favorite text editor when I click on it. Or even better set up file association defaults for extension patterns ie textEdit for extensions matching *.o*. I do NOT want to create file associations for individual files since this extension will only ever exist once, and I do not want to go through the process of selecting the application to use for each file. • kill process but fail

  Hi, I am running a bash script as a background job. The bash script calls a time-consuming executable. If I am not wrong, the running of the bash script is the parent process and the running of the executable is the child process. I now want to stop the whole running by killing the parent process which is the background job kill -9 $(jobs -p) The terminal shows that the running of the bash script is killed. But the running of the executable still hangs on the output of top. I just wonder how to also kill the child process? Thanks and regards!

• How can I get Transaction Logs to auto-truncate after Backup

  Setup: Sql Server 2008 R2, databases set up with Full recovery mode. I have set up a maintenance plan that backs up the transaction logs for a number of databases on the server. It is set to create backup files in sub-directories for each database, verify backup integrity is turned on, and backup compression is used. The job is set to run once every 2 hours during business hours (8am-6pm). I have tested the job and it runs fine, creates the log backup files as it should. However, from what I have read, once the transaction log is backed up, it should be ok to truncate the transaction log. I do not see any option for doing this in the Sql Server Maintenance Plan designer. How can I set this up?

• Dual Screens with Widescreen monitors?

  I want to build a new computer and purchase new monitor(s). At my old job I had two 20" 4:3 and I absolutely loved this setup. However, the stores in my country only seem to have widescreen monitors nowadays, and the only 4:3 LCDs i have been able to find are 17". My question is: Do widescreens suck for using them as dual monitors? Can anyone with this setup comment on their experience with having multiple widescreen monitors? Would it be better to get three 17" 4:3 LCDs instead of two widescreens? If i go with widescreens, should i go with the smallest ones i can find? Purchasing a single big widescreen monitor is not an option for me, since being able to maximize an app on a specific area of the screen is a must have for me and im not willing to use "hacky" apps for this purpose that do a crappy job. • sharepoint administrative server not started causing sharepoint deployment instability

  When i deploy anything to a variety of sharepoint servers i get problems with some packages failing, from what i can see the only error given is as below. The timer job for this operation has been created, but it will fail because the administrative service for this server is not enabled. If the timer job is sched uled to run at a later time, you can run the jobs all at once using stsadm.exe - o execadmsvcjobs. To avoid this problem in the future, enable the Windows ShareP oint Services administrative service, or run your operation through the STSADM.e xe command line utility. Is this a known problem? I googled for the text but got only one other person with the problem who simply worked round it. I'm trying to batch deploy solutions programmatically and so these errors render the whole code worthless if you have to go back and redo bits by hand afterwards. Is batch deployment simply not possible? Thanks!

• Where does Rundesk execute local tasks from

  I'm trying to interact with the nodejs Azure sdk from a CentOS installation of Rundeck. If I try from the "run" adhoc virtual shell, I am able to after running azure account import <mykey> and can then also execute other Azure commands inside of jobs if I set them as Rundeck node tasks and not selecting "dispatch to nodes" in the job settings. Trying to run the Azure sdk commands as commands to be dispatched to the node (local) fails with the error: localhost1-NodeDispatch-localexec 04:53:04 /usr/bin/env: node: No such file or directory 04:53:04 Failed: NonZeroResultCode: Result code was 127 I am not able to "jumpstart" the same environment by running azure account import <mykey> I am assuming this is a permissions/environmental issue, though not sure how to fix it. UPDATE: Executing whoami from the same job returns rundeck, so I assume I will need to either modify that to execute tasks as my system user or grant permissions to get the rundeck user into the node environment the Azure sdk is running in?

  Possible Duplicate: How is software deployed via Active Directory? I have trying to deploy a programs, mapped network drives and taks schedule job. I didn't manage to start a script on log on PC until I did it in Default Domain Policy. But when I did that I have installed programs on my server too. And mapped network drives, etc. So I don't know how to manage to do all of that but not to install anything on server over GPO. I still didn't manage to deploy a schedule task job on clients. I manage to put it on server bit not on clients. I need that schedule task because I need to update software on clients every week. I can't manual update flash player, adobe reader, firefox, etc on clients. And People useing client PC even doesn't know how to do it if they have abillity. Clients doesn't have admin rights.

• Printer monitor software across multiple workstations (AD integrated)

  I was asked to see if there is any kind of (free) software that allows multiple people in an office that use the same printer to see what jobs have finished recently, which are queued and which is printing. Main reason is that sometimes multiple people have the same task where they need to print some kind of form, and they are unsure whether or not their colleague has already printed the file. Because the printer is AD integrated, they only see a short message when printing, but they do not see a proper printer queue. A simple tray icon/tool would be perfect, no real graphical user interface is required. If this turns out to be too hard to find, I will attempt to write a simple application or script for the job, but since this is a low priority job I decided to ask here first before I start messing around with scripting which isn't my forte. I've read the documentation , as it is, and it seems kind of sparse for a SysV init replacement... but whatever just need to add this job to the list, run it, and get on with what's left of my life... Any tips? EDIT: initctl version init (upstart 0.6.5)

• Mac OS X: at command not working

  I am going to schedule a job by using at command. Here I tried the following command: $ at now + 1 minute echo 'Test at command' <EOD> I saw the job is scheduled by using at -l. However, I saw no echo out. I guess that I may need to add user to at.allow file. I cannot find at.allow in my Mac (Snow Leopard). Not sure what I need to do to test this at command?

  I downloaded java SDK from Google App Engine. I tried running appcfg.cmd from command prompt. But it gives this error. Error opening registry key 'Software\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment' Error: could not find java.dll Error: could not find Java 2 Runtime Environment. All i want to do with Google App Engine is to set up cron jobs with 1 minute frequency. I don't want to make any application in Google App Engine. I just want the cron job set up. Is there any way to set up cron job in Google App Engine without using the java SDK ???

• Unable to connect to Amazon EC2 without using PPK file

  I have a build job which runs on Hudson and synchronizes content from an Amazon AWS server. This is written in shell I have a PPK file given to me which can establish the connectivity Here is the problem. The build script I use doesn't establish the connectivity in the code. So, I manually connect the host thro the PPK file using Putty and then run the job, then it works fine I am new to the shell stuff. Could someone help me out by suggesting how I can establish connectivity using the PPK file in the shell so I do not have to do it manually thro Putty? Thanks, Krishna

• SQL Maintenance Cleanup Task Working but Not Deleting

  I have a Maintenance Plan that is suppose to go through the BACKUP folder and remove all .bak older than 5 days. When I run the job, it gives me a success message but older .bak files are still present. I've tried the step at the following question: SQL Maintenance Cleanup Task 'Success' But not deleting files Result is column IsDamaged = 0 I've verified with the following question and this is not my issue: Maintenance Cleanup Task(s) running 'successfully' but not deleting back up files. I've also tried deleting the Job and Maintenance Plan and recreating, but to no avail. Any ideas?

  I have to concatenate a number of files in a directory structure which contains spaces in the folder names looking like this: ./CH 0000100014/A10/11XT/11xt#001.csv find . -name "*.csv" -type f -print0 | xargs -0 cat > allmycsv.txt does the job, however now I need to include the information contained in the path, i.e. CH 0000100014/A10/11XT as a header of each inputfile to cat. find . -name "*.csv" -type f -print0 | xargs -0 -I % sh -c 'echo %; cat %' >allmycsv.txt would do the job, if I had no spaces in the path, but in my case, cat does not get along with the space in the path name.   Hello, qstat manual says -j [job_list] Prints either for all pending jobs or the jobs con- tained in job_list various information. The job_list can contain job_ids, job_names, or wildcard expression sge_types(1). i.e. qstat -j job_name should work. But whenver I try i get an error saying qstat -j test_20100203_01 ERROR: job-ID should be an integer Any idea if this should have worked. I can also use: qstat | grep test_20100203_01 but the problem is that qstat lists the shortened job name (something like test_2010020 and not test_20100203_01). Please advise.

  I am working with tomcat6 and HUDSON, when I run the hudson job it is running as tomcat6 user, what I want to know is there any way to change the HUDSON user as my system login user instead of tomcat6 so that I can run hudson job as my system user. I just want to know whether it is possible or not and why and how? I tired editing /etc/init.d/tomcat6 and changed tomcat6 user and grop as my login id, and the restarted the tomcat. Still the hudson jobs are running as tomcat6 user.Am i did the righ thing, if so why it is not working. Thanks in advance

  I have an upstart job: description "foreman" start on runlevel [2345] stop on runlevel [06] respawn respawn limit 3 60 chdir /home/deploy/app/current env RAILS_ENV=production exec sudo -u deploy bundle exec foreman start We ran into a case where a rogue character in an app file caused one of the background workers to fail but the app ran normally (weird). The app worked fine, but the workers were never working. I'd like upstart to do something (send an email) if it can't start this job, since it's not entirely obvious if everything went alright. Is there something built into upstart to handle this, or do I have to get creative?
