  • Viewing Postscript (or PDF) on OS X: Aliasing issues

    I am generating postscript graphics and am trying to find a balance between non-aliasing and over-aliasing. If I use the raw ghostscript viewer gs on the Postscript, it looks good. The text appears anti-aliased, but the image remains nice and blocky. Unfortunately, gs has no real user interface and loses all of the nice things that Preview.app has. I could install gv, but the dependency bloat is huge! It requires all of gnome. And even that isn't a great viewer compared to Preview.app or Skim.app. Here is an image viewed with gs: From a user-interaction and Mac-ish perspective, Preview.app (or Skim.app is a much nicer program to use. They have the option to turn on or off aliasing, but neither option looks very good. Which aliasing on, the image is blurry. When it is off, the graphic matches what is seen from gs, but there are two issues. Minor issue: the font is ugly. Uglier than with gs. Major issue: Every PDF is un-aliased, making it hard to read regular PDFs full of text. So, in summary: Is there a way to manually generate the PDF from the PS that overcomes these issues? Is there a way to find a middle ground of alias/unalias with Preview.app? Is there another app that displays with quality like gs, but has a decent UI like Skim.app or Preview.app Is there a way to have Preview.app turn off aliasing for only one file (containing graphics) but leave it enabled in general so that text PDFs are still readable?

  • PHP + IIS7 + X64 OS (Windows 7 or Server 2008)

    I'm going to answer my own question here, but I thought this might be important enough to post so that it would be indexed for the next person who runs into my situation. Problem: I can not seem to get PHP code to execute on a x64 bit version ofIIS7, whether it be in my desktop, Windows 7, or the application's final destination on Windows Server 2008. Every time I try and look at a test php document to confirm installation, I only see the source code. I've followed the documentation from PHP, from iis.net, blogs, howtos, just about anywhere I can find that Google would send me. I tried the web installer, tried manual installations instead of the MSI, tried version 5.3.5, tried version 5.2.17, but no matter what, the code would never execute. I even tried registering .eric files with PHP FastCGI Module, but same result, php source code only.

  • Use GRUB/GRUB2 to PXE boot OS image

    Asked this in stackoverflow but they recommended I post this here: Here is the situation I am in: I currently have a Windows drive that boots XP. The BIOS does not support PXE booting so this is out of the question. Therefore, I was thinking I could install a customized GRUB bootloader on it instead such that it will have the option to PXE boot an image from a DHCP server connected to it and have the option to load Windows as it normally does (two items in menu). The catch is it may need to be automated (meaning no keyboard), so is there any way to run a script pre-boot during GRUB loading that determines if DHCP / TFTP servers are running and attempt to PXE boot an image from the network (and if not, say timeout of 10 seconds, regularly boot from Windows drive)? If this is not possible, what are some other options / suggestions? I was reading up on grub4dos as well but I'm not sure that is what I need. FWIW, I'm free to do whatever I want to the drive. I'd really appreciate some help on this as I'm not sure where to start. Thanks!

  • Key modifiers affect remote VNC sessions in OS X

    I have two concurrent users of my MacBook: one local (with local peripherals) and one remote (connecting via VNC to a user kept logged in with fast user switching). As described here http://macosx.com/forums/howto-faqs/52547-howto-simultaneous-user-environments-via-vnc.html That's working fine, except that when I hit modifier keys (e.g. shift, option, ...), I also affect the remote user. For example, if I hold down shift, the remote user's key strokes are capitalised, and if I hold down option, they get strange glyphs instead of the normal letters. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this, or how to fix it?

  • Windows 7 Natively on Mac OS X Bootcamp, Airport Wifi Unable To Connect

    I am using a brand new MacBook Pro. I am running a copy of Windows 7 natively via bootcamp (No use of Virtual Machine Software at all). However the only way I can get Windows to connect to the internet is via ethernet, as opposed to the Macs Airport card picking up the wireless. It just refuses to connect, and gives me a limited access status. Any ideas!? I've run Windows XP natively via bootcamp and I had a few issues with the network constantly dropping out, however I blamed that on the drivers and the general shiteness of XP.... Help greatly appreciated.

  • GRUB2 not detecting OS on raid partitions

    I have recently added a drive to a system and have successfully raid'ed (RAID-1) the paritions, with the exception of the boot partition. I have it ready and mirrored, but can't get GRUB2 (update-grub) to find it. System: Ubuntu 11.04 Raid Metadata: 1.2 If I run update-grub, it finds the kernel images on the /dev/sda2 partition (present root) but not the images on /dev/md127. /dev/md127 is composed of "missing" and "/dev/sdb2". fdisk on /dev/sdb confirms that sdb2 is of type fd (raid autodetect) and is also flagged bootable. I have two things I want to do. Make the boot.cfg on /dev/sdb2 have a menu option to have the root be /dev/md127 Install grub onto /dev/md127 so the actual boot.cfg from there is being used. Thanks!

  • How to disable Spotlight content indexing in Mac OS

    From Windows experience, I could always elect Live search to only index file names not their content. Is this something that can be done with Spotlight on a Mac? It used to index absolutely everything, for instance it would return a bunch of video files for any obscure character combination typed into the search field. Right now I've disabled Spotlight entirely as per this answer, but it seems to have disabled searching altogether. For instance, Finder is yet to locate any .pdf files in a small directory as I'm typing this question (unlike windows search which would still be able to work even with indexing disabled) Alternatively, if there is any way (including a trusted third-party app) that will index file names and metadata e.g. ID3 tags that would likely be the preferred option.

  • Running a command line app with sudo and password automatically on OS X startup

    I need to run an app at startup/login on my mac. I want it to launch in the background and start doing it's work without interrupting me or me having to start it up because I invariably forget and then when I need it, it wasn't running! I have tried using AppleScript to tell Terminal to run it and type my password in, but it ends up opening multiple Terminal windows and not working. Ideally I need a script that I can just add to the user login items and it will run for me. The app has no way of taking a password argument either and it has a password as well as the sudo! I need a solution that can either be done as an applescript (which can be made into an executable) or i need a commandline script but I have no idea about them.     Every time I minimize an application on my new MacBook, it minimizes, but when I switch to it, all i see is a menu on top saying that I am currently using that program, but it's still hidden. There is no menu command to "unhide" it, only to hide it. Is there a way to unhide it? Is there is a way to unhide it by default when I switch to the app?

  • Laptop won't load an OS or even an OS setup.

    My fiancé's laptop started to crash and would get BSOD errors to the point that she couldn't even boot up because it would either take forever or just crash. So I figured I'd try to reformat, as it's done this before and this was the solution last time. On Windows 7, it will not go passed the "Setup is starting..." screen. On Windows XP, it crashes once the setup is about to start (BSOD). I shut it down and let it sit for 5+ hours, in case it was overheating, but it's doing the same thing anyway. By now, I figure it's something to do with the hardware but I hope not. Any ideas?

    I have installed Apache server. Two clients ex client_1 and client_2. The operation that we are performing on client_1 reflecting to client_2. We have etc/hosts file in our software install location which is keep on changing for client_2 with client_1 IP address. If I correct the entries in hosts file to client_2 also in the next few minuets it is changing automatically to the client_1(if we start the client_1 service). Please explain the use of hosts file and where and when it will change by Apache service.   • How to benchmark kernel (-Os vs -O2)

    It seems logical to me that on a 64-bit kernel compiling it to optimize for size might help overall. (My distro of choice uses -O2) It has the benefits of more registers and memory and perhaps less cache contention than normal optimized code. I have a kernel compiled like this and it seems excellent. However my question is how can I prove this? I like using Phoronix for "real world" sort of benchmarks so I would prefer to test cases like that. What should I pick to test? Does anyone else have any alternatives? Without overwriting but to create a copy if two files have the same name, but different sizes Without duplicating if two files have the same name and size. To work recursively So far I have found the following command which might work $ rsync -varE --progress ~/folder /volumes/server/folder But I'm not entirely sure what the -E flag does. It was suggested by a user on bananica.com but couldn't see a description for it in the manual. Would this do what I require successfully? Thanks

  • Disable "Print and Close" Preview Shortcut on OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

    I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion from Leopard and there is a global shortcut that I would really like to disable. Apparently, now if you select a document and press Command + p, Preview will open, print the document, then close. I'm sure this was done with the purest intentions but, unfortunately, it is right next to Command + o, which I use many times a day to open files. Since installing Mountain Lion, I've accidentally printed way too many documents just trying to open them! I've gone into the Keyboard preference pane and tried to find where this shortcut is located, but haven't had any success. Anyone know how I can disable this?

  • Determine $DISPLAY socket name on OS X 10.6?

    I'm looking to do something that's a little odd. I'm SSH'ing from a server to a Snow Leopard client to start an X11 data display process. In other words, SSH's X11 forwarding isn't what I want. I can do: client$ echo $DISPLAY /tmp/launch-SOMETHING/org.x:0 client$ ls -l $DISPLAY srwx------ 1 myuser wheel 0 Dec 9 15:47 /tmp/launch-SOMETHING/org.x:0 And, when I do: server$ ssh myuser@client client$ export DISPLAY=/tmp/launch-SOMETHING/org.x:0 client$ xterm I happily get my xterm. What I need, then, is some way to find out the correct value for $DISPLAY in my ssh session. From what I've read, $DISPLAY is set by launchd, but I haven't found any way to see that value. If it matters, I know that when my process connects from $server to $client, $client will logged in to the terminal as the same user.

Because I got this error while I tried following this instruction: Give the IP address, username and password of the remote machine that you would like to convert and then hit next I got this error in vmware converter: Unable to connect the specified host 10.0.2.15 which is the ip address of the xp machine inside virtual box. It also said that there is a network configuration problem. And when I inputted the ip address from whatismyip.com which should be the same as the ip address on local machine. I didn't get the previous error but I got another one, it said that: insufficient permissions to connect to "ip address" What solution can you suggest for this problem?

    All of a sudden, my headphones stopped working with windows 8 in my laptop. Sound plays fine through built in speakers. Its not a problem with the hardware, because, I dual boot ubuntu and sound plays fine in Ubuntu. These are the things I have tried: - Restarting and blah blah. Restarted 20 times i think, alternating windows and ubuntu. - Uninstalled and reinstalled Realtek drivers. - Troubleshooting from control panel (it says "coudnt identify problem") What might be the problem?

  • Remote deployment of OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 upgrade, not as a fresh install

    Anyone have any ideas or suggestions (or know if its even possible) to remote upgrade a fleet of Macs from 10.6.8 to 10.8 remotely. I presume I can push the installESD through ARD, but I want it to run completely unattended. If it is not possible through "traditional" methods does anyone know of any tools that might help automate this process? Thank you for your thoughts, feedback, and suggestions.
