  • 3.5mm headphone jack -> Component video?

    Hello, I have a strange cord that has a male 3.5mm headphone jack on one side, and some component video and audio ouputs on the other. When I plug the headphone side into my computer, and the other side into my TV, I get audio across the cable, but no video. How can I send some video over the headphone jack in OS X? I know you can, because this cable is actually for a Beyblade toy and it somehow transferred video over this cable. Thanks, Isaac I think I found some more information (from Wikipedia:) "A four conductor version (of a 3.5mm headphone jack) is becoming a de facto standard output connector for compact camcorders, providing stereo sound plus a video signal." So how can I do this on Mac?

  • Can I put /tmp and /var/log in a ramdisk on OS X?

    For non-critical Linux systems, I often move things /tmp and /var/log to tmpfs to save on some disk writing. I've been doing this for a year or so and if I ever need the logs across reboots, I just comment out a line in /etc/fstab and then start debugging. In any case, I would like to do the same thing on OS X. I've seen posts on creating a ramdisk for OS X, but I'm looking for a more permanent solution. I always want /tmp and /var/log mounted in a ramdisk, with the ability to turn that off with a bit of cmdline editing in vi if I have to.

    I am trying to hack together a twitter/fb/chat client which will not take up a separate window. How would I go about embedding a text field on a Mac OS X desktop? That is, I want to be able to type into it, but it needs to sit behind all windows at all times. I know I can use geektool to display text. Is there a similar program or piece of code that would allow me to do what I want?

    I came across various examples on printing next line after a match, that use awk and sed. I'm using it in my code and it works fine. Now I want to use a variable instead of a hardcoded value for the pattern match. The search pattern string includes forward slashes "/". How do I use a variable that has "/" in it and use it to print the next line after the match? The following doesn't seem to work: var="/somePath/to/my/home" val=`echo -e "$someStr" | sed -n ':$var:{n;p;}'` In this case, val is always blank. I'm using using ":" as the delimiter instead of "/". I'm on a Mac OS X.

How do I fix it to where it prints black and white by default, and if you want color, you have to change the settings?   • Cannot Start MySQL Server on Fresh MAMP Install

    I'm using Mac OS X 10.6.2 on my Macbook Pro. I can get the apache server to start, but not the mysql server, on both the default apache and default MAMP ports. When I try to go to my start page, I get the message "Error: Could not connect to MySQL server!" .     Hello, Is there any software out there that can simulate Disk Utility (Mac app) for Windows? I need to reinstall leopard on my Mac because I screwed something up on the current OS. The thing is, the DVD drive is broken on there, so I need to prepare a bootable USB drive from my Leopard DMG file. This is easily done with the Disk Utility app on the Mac. But seeing how my cannot even log on to my Mac right now, I don't know how to prepare that USB stick. The only other machine I have is a PC with Windows 7. If anyone has any suggestion, please help me out! Thanks so much!

  • Where is custom icon information stored in Mac OS X Snow Leopard?

    I have an external Lacie hard drive connected via USB to my Macbook Pro which is running Snow Leopard. I have nothing but music on the external drive with every album sorted in it's own individual folder and have changed all of the individual folder icons to display the album art of the songs from the album inside. I want to reformat my laptop, but I'm afraid if I do that, the album art will disappear if it's stored on a system file within the main hard drive OS. My question is this, is the information which tells the OS to display the album art listed in a hidden system file on the external Lacie drive or my laptop hard drive and if I reformat will I have to reassociate all of the album art to the folders on the external or will it keep it's associations.   • Sharing software updates between macs without OS X Server

    Is there any way to (manually or automatically) share downloaded software updates between macs? Edit: The thinking is that I have one mac update itself using Software Update, and then somehow share the downloaded updates with other macs. For example, I have a mac pro and a mac mini on my local network. I'd like to download the Mac OS X 10.6.5 update only once, instead of having to download it separately for each mac.

  • Why isn't sox able to convert to mp3?

    I installed Sox, i installed lame-398, but sox is not able to convert any file to mp3. It fails with the messages: ./../sox FAIL util: Unable to load LAME encoder library (libmp3lame). ./../sox FAIL formats: can't open output file `funktech.mp3': How can i check if lame has been installed correct? How can i get sox to find the mp3Library? edit: I did not install sox at all, it works without installing directly from the commandline. Lame was installed by following the instructions on their site: ./configure make make install which results in the following files being found in /usr/local/lib/ : libmp3lame.dylib, libmp3lame.la, libmp3lame.a Maybe symlinking libmp3lame.la, which is marked as executable, to /usr/bin would help?

  • Chrome pegs CPU playing YouTube videos

    I am not sure when this started, but the issue definitely exists in the latest version of Chrome (10.0.648.127). Playing youtube video at 320p essentially pegs the CPU. The process that kills is WindowServer which takes up the lion's share of the CPU. When I close the tab, everything goes back to normal. If I try this in Safari or Firefox, CPU usage is within acceptable levels. I am on a 2-3 year old MacMini, which is not the latest, but runs most apps fine. 1.83Mhz Intel Core 2 Duo. Is there a setting within Chrome I can set to fix this issue?

    I know how to change the default application for opening files. I select a file in Finder, right-click and select Get Info from the context menu. In the file's Info window, expand the Open with: panel. In that panel is a combo box that says, in my case, Adobe Flash CS4. I click the combo box and select Flash Player. It changes. Then I click the Change All... button. A dialog pops up and says: Are you sure you want to change all similar documents to open with the application “Adobe Flash CS4”? This change will apply to all documents with extension “.swf”. Cancel/Continue Well, clicking Continue does exactly what the message says. It sets the Finder to open all swf files with Adobe Flash CS4. What is going on? Why doesn't the message say, .... "Flash Player"

  • Macbook cannot see specific wireless network after being connected to it for a while

    Okay, so there's a single wireless network that my laptop has troubles with. My Macbook Pro used to be fine with it until it changed to using channel 13 (or 11?). Since then, after being connected to it for a while it disappears from my laptop's view. Other networks are showing up fine and other computers (including several Macs) have no troubles connecting to this network. If I clear my system cache using Onyx and then restart (sometimes a couple times) my laptop can see and connect to it again. But it seems that if I disconnect and try reconnecting I have to clear my cache again. One thing to note is that if I put my computer to sleep while connected to this network it has no problems reconnecting on wake up. I've got a 15" Macbook Pro 2,2 with Leopard 10.5.8.

  • Drive Genius says: "Invalid catalog btree reverse link in node" is this fixable?

    No obvious problems with my Mac OS X 10.5 system, but Drive Genius 1.5.1 says: "Invalid catalog btree reverse link in node" when doing a "Verify" The "repair" and "rebuild" options fail. I did some googling, and the consensus as: 1- Drive Genius is slightly better than Disk Warrior 2- This problem is likely not fixable. My assumed solution is that I should do a full backup and re-format.
