  • How do I remove a malformed line from my sources.list?

    - by eminencejae
I have unistalled and reinstalled the Ubuntu Software Center as per info I found in a similar thread and I got the same response about line 91 or something like that. I just tried to upload a screen shot but since I'm new it won't allow me to. I also can not figure out how to cut and paste anything so I have to hand type what the error screen says, both when I attempt to open the software center and nothing happens, when I try to enter commands into the terminal to uninstall, reinstall, whatever I get the same following: COULD NOT INTITIALIZE THE PACKAGE INFORMATION An unresolvable problem occured while initializing the package information Please report t:his bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E: Malformed line 91 in source list/etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse) E: The list of sources could not be read., E: The package list of status file could not be parsed or opened. How do I report bugs? What can be done about this. I have searched and everything everyone says to do leads me back to the same line error message. So, I don't know how to get to line 91 in the source list; to tell you what it says. Sorry, I'm really new to this. That is what I need is to find out how to get there and fix what it says. I would really like to NOT have to re partition my hard drive and start from scratch, so I'm really looking forward to getting this problem solved. I need to be able to install new software.

  • Can I transfer a Win7 upgrade if the upgraded OS was retail? [closed]

    - by foocode
Possible Duplicate: Windows 7 and Vista Activation FAQ: How do language, version, 64-bit or 32-bit, and source affect ability to install and transfer Windows licenses? I have new system components on the way which equate to a new computer. My current machine config is running Windows 7 Pro Upgrade which I installed on top of Vista Ultimate (retail - not OEM). Can I install the Windows 7 Pro on the new computer? Would this equate to transferring the original OS (Vista) license to the new machine?

  • What languages should a microISV use to write commercial software?

    - by Wal
I've been writing software in Java for many years now, but it was always for internal applications that would be deployed to a server. I'd like to get into writing desktop applications now but I don't know where to start. I've written a few Java/Swing applications but again they were for internal use. My understanding is that Java and other semi-compiled and interpreted languages are too easy to reverse engineer, making them unsuitable for commercial software. I am aware that there are compilers for Java and some other interpreted language, but I've also heard that they are pricey and/or unreliable. Assuming I start a microISV and wish to develop and sell applications to a broad audience, what's my best bet? I would prefer something that can be written close to once, and compiled for different operating systems but I am not opposed to .NET and a Windows-only audience if other languages would compromise the experience (installation ease & user experience) in Windows. My only issue there is that I don't have a large starting budget and paying out the wazoo for the required development tools is not really in the cards.

  • Have any software engineers gotten math degrees later in their careers?

    - by vin
I have a bachelors in computer science and worked the last 12 years as a software engineer. I'm bored with doing general development work, so I want to specialize. I'm thinking about getting a master's degree in math so I can build math models and write algorithms to implement them. I'm unsure what type of work I'd do (financial, gaming, graphics, science, research, etc) but I'm open minded. I would need to refresh my undergrad math skills (which are old and faded), but I loved algebra and calculus. I've been working with couple statisticians so I've been finding myself more interested in statistics. Since I'm a parent supporting a household, I would have to continue working while studying. Have any software engineers taken this route? (Specifically, going from BS in comp sci to MS in math.) If so, what advice do you have for coursework, financing, and getting a job that combines programming with advanced math? How abundant are these kinds of jobs? I'm not sure where one starts. Also, how do you hop from a BS to an MS in a different subject?

  • How can I get a list of licenses from intalled RPMs?

    - by Peter
We've been asked to list all the software and licenses used in our organization. Without deciding the value of this request, I'd like to get my Fedora laptop to answer the question easily. rpm -qa Gives me a list of packages, but no license data. My next step is to take that output and write a script to query each package's license. Anyone got an easier idea?

  • Can I add Boost source+header files to my own (Open Source) project?

    - by rubenvb
Is it allowed by the Boost License to just add the source code of the stuff I need to my project (accompanied by the license of course?). I couldn't find any "descriptive" confirmation. I would have seperate Include/boost and Source/boost directories for easy access. PS: Seeing as boost::filesystem is going into C++0x TR2, and lambda's are already in c++0x TR1, I don't see any reason to be juggling with C functions like realpath, getcwd and the like. They don't work well anyways...

  • Ideas for a rudimentary software licensing implementation

    - by Ross
I'm trying to decide how to implement a very basic licensing solution for some software I wrote. The software will run on my (hypothetical) clients' machines, with the idea being that the software will immediately quit (with a friendly message) if the client is running it on greater-than-n machines (n being the number of licenses they have purchased). Additionally, the clients are non-tech-savvy to the point where "basic" is good enough. Here is my current design, but given that I have little to no experience in the topic, I wanted to ask SO before I started any development on it: A remote server hosts a MySQL database with a table containing two columns: client-key and license quantity The client-side application connects to the MySQL database on startup, offering it's client-key that I've put into a properties file packaged into the distribution (I would create a new distribution for each new client) Chances are, I'll need a second table to store validation history, so that with some short logic, the software can decide if it can be run on a given machine (maybe a sliding window of n machines using the software per 24 hours) If the software cannot establish a connection to the MySQL database, or decides that it's over the n allowed machines per day, it closes The connection info for the remote server hosting the MySQL database should be hard-coded into the app? (That sounds like a bad idea, but otherwise they could point it to some other always-validates-to-success server) I think that about covers my initial design. The intent being that while it certainly isn't full-proof, I think I've made it at least somewhat difficult to create an easily-sharable cracking solution. Also, I can easily adjust the license amount for a given client/key pair. I gotta figure this has been done a million times before, so tell me about a better solution that's just as simple to implement and provides the same (low) amount of security. In the event that external libraries are used, I prefer Java, as that's what the software has been written in.

  • jQuery and jQuery UI (Dual Licensing)

OK I have read many posts regarding Dual Licensing using MIT and GPL licenses. But Im curious still, as the wording seems to be inclusive. Many of the Dual Licenses state that the software is licensed using "MIT AND GPL". The "AND" is what confuses me. It seems to me that the word "AND" in the terms, means you will be licensing the product using both licenses. Most of the posts, here on stackoverflow, say you can license the software using one "OR" the other. JQuery specifically states "OR", whereas JQuery UI specifically States "AND". Another Instance of the "AND" would be JQGrid. Im not a lawyer but, it seems to me that a legal interpretation of this would state that use of the software would mean that your using the software under both licenses. Has anyone who has contacted a lawyer gotten clarification or a definitive answer as to what is true? Can you use Dual licensed software products that state "AND" in the terms of agreement under either license?

  • help on developing enterprise level software solutions

    - by wefwgeweg
there is a specific niche which I would like to target by providing a complete enterprise level software solution.... the problem is, where do i begin ? meaning, i come from writing just desktop software on VB/ASP .net/PHP/mysql and suddenly unfamiliar terms popup like Oracle, SAP Business Information Warehouse, J2EE.... obviously, something is pointing towards Java, is it common for software suites, or solutions to be developed 100% on Java technology and standards? Are there any other platform to build enterprise level software on ? i am still lacking understanding what exactly is "Enterprise level" ? what is sufficient condition to call a software that sells for $199 and then suddenly it's $19,999 for "enterprise" package. I dont understand why there is such a huge discrepancy between "standard" and "enterprise" versions of software. Is it just attempting to bag large corporations on a spending spree ? so why does one choose to develop so called "enterprise" softwares ? is it because of the large inflated price tag you can justify with ? i would also like some more enterpreneural resources on starting your own enterprise software company in a niche.... Thank you for reading, i am still trying to find the right questions.

  • MVC DropDownListFor not populating the selected value

    - by user2254436
    I'm really having troubles with MVC, in another project I've done the same thing and it worked fine but in this project I just don't understand why the selected item in the dropdown is not populating the class correctly with EF. I have 2 classes: public partial class License { public License() { this.Customers = new HashSet<Customer>(); } public int LicenseID { get; set; } public int Lic_LicenseTypeID { get; set; } public int Lic_LicenseStatusID { get; set; } public string Lic_LicenseComments { get; set; } public virtual EntitiesList LicenseStatus { get; set; } public virtual EntitiesList LicenseType { get; set; } } public partial class EntitiesList { public EntitiesList() { this.LicensesStatus = new HashSet<License>(); this.LicensesType = new HashSet<License>(); } public int ListID { get; set; } public string List_EntityValue { get; set; } public string List_Comments { get; set; } public string List_EntityName { get; set; } public virtual ICollection<License> LicensesStatus { get; set; } public virtual ICollection<License> LicensesType { get; set; } public string List_DisplayName { get { return Regex.Replace(List_EntityName, "([a-z])([A-Z])", "$1 $2"); ; } } public string List_DisplayValue { get { return Regex.Replace(List_EntityValue, "([a-z])([A-Z])", "$1 $2"); } } } The EntitiesList is table in db that have all my "enum" lists. For example: ListID - 0 List_EntityValue - Activate List_EntityName - LicenseStatus ListID - 1 List_EntityValue - Basic List_EntityName - LicenseType This is my model: public class LicenseModel { public License License { get; set; } public SelectList LicenseStatuses { get; set; } public int SelectedStatus { get; set; } public SelectList LicenseTypes { get; set; } public int SelectedType { get; set; } } My controller for create: public ActionResult Create() { LicenseModel model = new LicenseModel(); model.License = new License(); model.LicenseStatuses = new SelectList(managerLists.GetAllLicenseStatuses(), "ListID", "List_DisplayValue"); model.LicenseTypes = new SelectList(managerLists.GetAllLicenseTypes(), "ListID", "List_DisplayValue"); return View(model); } [HttpPost] [ValidateAntiForgeryToken] public ActionResult Create(LicenseModel model) { if (ModelState.IsValid) { model.License.Lic_LicenseTypeID = model.SelectedType; model.License.Lic_LicenseStatusID = model.SelectedStatus; managerLicense.AddNewObject(model.License); return RedirectToAction("Index"); } return View(model); } managerLists and managerLicense are the managers that connect between the entities in db and the MVC UI, nothing special... they contains queries for adding new objects, getting the lists, editing and so on. And the view for creating the License: @using (Html.BeginForm()) { @Html.AntiForgeryToken() @Html.ValidationSummary(true) <fieldset> <legend>License</legend> <div class="form-group"> @Html.LabelFor(model => model.License.Lic_LicenseTypeID) @Html.DropDownListFor(model => model.SelectedType, Model.LicenseTypes, new { @class = "form-control" }) <p class="help-block">@Html.ValidationMessageFor(model => model.License.Lic_LicenseTypeID)</p> </div> <div class="form-group"> @Html.LabelFor(model => model.License.Lic_LicenseStatusID) @Html.DropDownListFor(model => model.SelectedStatus, Model.LicenseStatuses, new { @class = "form-control" }) <p class="help-block">@Html.ValidationMessageFor(model => model.License.Lic_LicenseStatusID)</p> </div> <div class="form-group"> @Html.LabelFor(model => model.License.Lic_LicenseComments) @Html.TextAreaFor(model => model.License.Lic_LicenseComments, new { @class = "form-control", rows = "3" }) <p class="help-block">@Html.ValidationMessageFor(model => model.License.Lic_LicenseComments)</p> </div> <p> <input type="submit" value="Create" /> </p> </fieldset> } Now, when I'm trying to save the new license, when it gets to the db.SaveChanges() in the manager I'm getting: "Validation failed for one or more entities. See 'EntityValidationErrors' property for more details." In breakpoint, the Lic_LicenseTypeID and Lic_LicenseStatusID are getting correctly the ID's from the selected item in the dropdown but the LicenseStatus and LicenseStatus properties are null. What an I missing?

  • Commercial Software Development – my presentation for DDD Scotland now available for download

    - by Liam Westley
Thanks to everyone who voted me onto the DDD Scotland agenda, and for the fantastic audience some of whom you can see in Craig Murphy's photos of the event, http://www.flickr.com/photos/craigmurphy/4592461745/in/set-72157624025673156 http://www.flickr.com/photos/craigmurphy/4592467645/in/set-72157624025673156 I hope those who came enjoyed the session had a good time, and for them or those who were on one of the other tracks, or who couldn’t squeeze in; I’ve uploaded the presentation for you to download.  I created a more simple, and smaller, PowerPoint without all the fancy animations and video clips, which is available as a compressed ZIP file,   http://www.tigernews.co.uk/blog-twickers/dddscot/commercialsoftwaredev.zip I also printed the presentation with speaker notes (which contain most of the information I was talking about) using PDFCreator, which is available as an Adobe Acrobat PDF here,   http://www.tigernews.co.uk/blog-twickers/dddscot/commercialsoftwaredev.pdf ... and if PowerPoint presentations don't do it for you, also thanks to Craig Murphy, you can watch a video of the presentation that I gave at DDD8 in Microsoft TVP, Reading,  http://vimeo.com/9216563
