  • Content light website and Google - Tell google it's a listings site (as opposed shop, reviews or restaurants)

    I have a listings style website. Due to the nature of this (listings) the site is content light. Each page is typically less that 50 words but there are many pages. The site in question has had a ton of media coverage and so has some great inbound links from places like Wired, Fast Company, Canada Broadcasting Corporation and many many other bloggers, media websites and recycle related niche authors (It's a recycling site). But Google really ignores it. Traffic from search is very very low - less than 5% of all traffic. I know that using markup you can tell Google whether your site is a restaurant, article, review, shop, local business and a few other categories (https://www.google.com/webmasters/markup-helper/u/0/). Is there a way to tell Google that my site is a listings site? I suspect, but do not know for sure, that part of the problem is that Google simply does not know what my site is? It's a crowdmap where people post curbalerts. The information is useful to people but it is presented in a short, concise way - a pin on a map, a picture and a short description. Adding anything further is not necessary for the site's intended purpose. 1st question - how best to tell the search engines what y site is - listings and not some spammy website?   • how to congest a link using iperf

    I have setup like below. Switch1-------------------- Switch2 | | | | | | | | | | | | PC1 PC2 PC3 PC4 I have a video traffic is flowing between PC1 and PC4. I have configured PC2 as iperf server. ( iperf -s ) and PC3 as client . (iperf -c 10.10.10.2 -P 20 -t 10000) where 10.10.10.2 is PC2 IP. now I am seeing most of the traffic in a link (switch1---switch2) is iperf. (TCP). I have observed from the logs that 1 out of 300 packet is UDP. Still I am not seeing any difference in the quality of video streaming in PC4. It looks similar compared to the case with no iperf. I am checking QOS, I have tried many options with iperf, couldnt succeed. I want to diminish the quality of video streaming in PC4. Could you please tell me what options can be used along with iperf to do it. Bandwidth between Switch1---switch2 is 1Gbits/sec. Thanks in advance

  • Upgrading Blog to WordPress, keep old one or redirect?

    I have had a blog for around 4 years now that has gained some success and gets tons of residual and organic traffic. I am using an outdated version of BlogEngine.NET and we are going to switch to WordPress. Currently, our blog is at ourwebsite.com/blog, and I don't really want to mess with our web server. I setup a new server just for WordPress and instead of dealing with proxies and things that are above my head, the new blog will be at blog.oursite.com. I am trying to figure out the best way to go about doing this. We value our search engine rankings very much so, as that is where 90% of our traffic comes from. Would I be best off: Importing all of the old blog posts from oursite.com/blog to blog.oursite.com and then redirecting all of the articles, categories, authors, pages and tags to the new blog and giving up the direct links to our current site. Keeping all of our current articles as they are, and only add new content to the new blog.oursite.com and just kind of let the old blog float around our site.

  • Plot numpy datetime64 with matplotlib

    I have two numpy arrays 1D, one is time of measurement in datetime64 format, for example: array([2011-11-15 01:08:11, 2011-11-16 02:08:04, ..., 2012-07-07 11:08:00], dtype=datetime64[us]) and other array of same length and dimension with integer data. I'd like to make a plot in matplotlib time vs data. If I put the data directly, this is what I get: plot(timeSeries, data) Is there a way to get time in more natural units? For example in this case months/year would be fine.

    Is there a way to get a record count or a space-used value for all the tables in a SQL Server Compact database file (SQL CE 3.5.1)? I saw this question, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2075026/sql-server-compact-count-records-get-space-used-for-all-tables-in-database So perhaps another option would be, is there an easy way to move a sqlce database to SQL Express? Would that give realistic measurement of the database table sizes?

  • Accurate Sleep for Java on Windows

    Does anyone know a Library which provides a Thread.sleep() for Java which has an error not higher than 1-2 Millisecond? I tried a mixture of Sleep, error measurement and BusyWait but I don't get this reliable on different windows machines. It can be a native implementation if the implementation is available for Linux and MacOS too.   • Performance analysis for java application

    I want to do a performance measurement of my application and would like to be able to configure the stats for specific module like (enable for specific module and disable for some) and I want to measure things like memory usage, threads, average band width etc.. Can any one suggest something please, I am new to this. I think Visual VM is good but it doesnot support configuring for different modules. Does Perf4j or Admin4j work here? any one has used these before?

  • local RTP port unreachable when using mjsip/jmf

    Hello, I create a sip session with mjsip to an external voip provider. Then I transmit a test wav file over rtp to the provider using RtpManager. The program runs with no errors and I answer the sip call. However, no audio is transmitted. When I diagnose the network traffic with wireshark, I see a bunch of RTP traffic from my localhost (behind some kind of nat) to the voip provider and nothing back. After a while I get the ICMP error "Destination unreachable (Port unreachable)" from the provider to my localhost. The software linphone works using the same localhost and voip provider - though it is using a different sip stack. Any suggestions? Thanks

  • What does "?ref=ts" mean in a FACEBOOK APP url

    When Facebook drives traffic to an app, they often append &ref=whatever to the query string. This is useful for figuring out which integration points are working or not. I've figured out what some of these mean. For example: ref=bookmarks - the user clicked on a bookmark. ref=game_my_recent - the user clicked on the upper portion of the games dashboard. Does anyone know what "ref=ts" means? It accounts for a ton of traffic. I've viewed source on pages all over common FB pages and cannot find a match for ant piece of content generated by any of my apps.   • Poco SocketReactor Scalability

    I have written a proxy server for Linux using Poco but have since been reading up on the various approaches to achieving TCP/IP server scalability. I will need the server to handle persistent connections (not HTTP traffic) with an upper limit of about 250 simultaneous connections. Each connection typically uses about 5-10Kb/sec and the best possible latency in handling traffic is crucial. As it stands I am using the Poco SocketReactor which uses the Reactor model with a select() call at its heart however I have had a read on the C10K problem as well as few other resources and it seems that using this approach might not be the best idea. I believe there is a test implementation in the Poco libs that uses poll() so this could be an option to improve things. Does anyone have any experience using a Poco SocketReactor and do you have any idea how well it might scale for my scenario? If it will not scale well, suggestions on alternatives would be appreciated.

Which host would you use for: Small personal websites with small traffic. Medium to large websites/applications with medium to large traffic. What host would you use for your assets (large images, media, etc...). Favorite dedicated/vps host.

  • Proxy calls across a DMZ

    We need to determine a quick way for our web application deployed in a DMZ to communicate to our SQL server that lives in the protected network. Only port 80 is open and available, and no direct SQL traffic is allowed across the firewall. So take the following simple system. A web page (default.aspx) makes a call (string GetData()) that resides in an assembly (Simple.DLL). GetData() uses ADO.NET to open a connection, execute a SQL call, retrieve the data, and return the data to the caller. However, since only port 80 is available and no SQL traffic is allowed, what could we do to accomplish our goal? I believe a .NET remoting solution would work, and I have heard of an architecture where a remoting layer proxies the call from Simple.DLL in the DMZ to another Simple.DLL that runs on the protected side. The remoting layer handles the communication between the two DLL’s. Can someone shed some light on how WCF/remoting can help us and how to get started with a solution?

    I'm currently testing GAs new async code snippet using two different tracking codes on the same page; _gaq.push( ['_setAccount', 'UA-XXXXXXXX-1'], ['_trackPageview'], ['b._setAccount', 'UA-XXXXXXXX-2'], ['b._trackPageview'] ); Although both codes work, I've noticed that they present inconsistent results. Now, we aren't talking huge differences here, only 1 or 2 visits / day every now and then. However, this site is tiny and 1 or 2 visits equates to a 15% difference in figures. Now, the final site has much more traffic, but my concerns are; will this inconsistancy scale with traffic? assuming not, is a slight variation in recorded stats an accepted norm?
