  • can I debug my web project and wcf project on same vs 2008 instance ?

    - by dotnetcoder
I have two projects in my solution   1- asp.net web project.   2- wcf serivce project.   3- other common projects between two listed above Current on the local dev machine I have to run two visual studio instance to run both projects in debug mode. That makes the system run out of resources as these projects share some other project in the soultion which are heavy in files. Is there a way i can hookup the wcf project on a sinlge visual stodio instance and also be able to debug my asp.net web project. ? I do not want to combine the web and wcf project in to one. Have already considred this option. thanks for sharing your thoughts in advance.

  • Easy remote communication without WCF

    - by Ralf Westphal
If you´ve read my previous posts about why I deem WCF more of a problem than a solution and how I think we should switch to asynchronous only communication in distributed application, you might be wondering, how this could be done in an easy way. Since a truely simple example to get started with WCF still is drawing quite some traffic to this blog, let me pick up on that and show you, how to accomplish the same but much easier with an async communication API. For simplicities sake let me put all...(read more)

  • Do not expose enum in WCF response

    - by Michael Freidgeim
We had a backward compatibility problem in WCF client, when in Service application a new value was added to one of enums. We discussed different ways to avoid this backward compatibility issues, and I found recommendation do not expose enum in wcf response in http://stackoverflow.com/a/788281/52277.It is still required to create new versions of our service interfaces to replace each enum fields with string field, that expects only documented values, and describe, what should be default behavior, if field has an unexpected value.

  • Implement service layer in MVC

    - by Dan H
We have a defined service layer hosted in WCF. We are now building a website that will need to use the services functionality. The website is being written in ASP.NET MVC 4 and I'm trying to decide how to reference the WCF service from the MVC app. It's a large complex website and it will be changing on a weekly basis. My first reaction is to abstract out the service references (About 7 services on this one WCF host) and create a service ref facade library with which the website interacts. But, I don't know exactly how to use the service facade in MVC. I'm starting to think the Models will be responsible for it because when the controller gets a model, that model should call the service (if needed) and return what the controller asked. I'm trying to avoid having the MVC app know details of the service references. So, I could have a model factory that creates whatever model the controllers need and they can use the service facade to accomplish it. Is this a good plan, or am I off track?

  • Discussion of a Distributed Data Storage implementation

    - by fegol
I want to implement a distributed data storage using a client/server architecture. Each data item will be stored persistently in disk in one of several remote servers. The client uses a library to update and query the data, shielding the client from its actual location. This should allow a client to associate keys (String) to values(byte[]), much as a Map does. The system must ensure that the amount of data stored in each server is approximately the same. The set of servers is known beforehand by other servers and clients. Both the client and the server will be written in Java, using sockets, threads, and files. I open this topic with the objective of discussing the best way to implement this idea, assuming simplicity, what are the issues of this implementation, performance measurements and discussion of the limitations.

  • OpenVPN Client timing out

    - by Austin
I recently installed OpenVPN on my Ubuntu VPS. Whenenver I try to connect to it, I can establish a connection just fine. However, everything I try to connect to times out. If I try to ping something, it will resolve the IP, but will time out after resolving the IP. (So DNS Server seems to be working correctly) My server.conf has this relevant information (At least I think it's relevant. I'm not sure if you need more or not) # Which local IP address should OpenVPN # listen on? (optional) ;local a.b.c.d # Which TCP/UDP port should OpenVPN listen on? # If you want to run multiple OpenVPN instances # on the same machine, use a different port # number for each one. You will need to # open up this port on your firewall. port 1194 # TCP or UDP server? ;proto tcp proto udp # "dev tun" will create a routed IP tunnel, # "dev tap" will create an ethernet tunnel. # Use "dev tap0" if you are ethernet bridging # and have precreated a tap0 virtual interface # and bridged it with your ethernet interface. # If you want to control access policies # over the VPN, you must create firewall # rules for the the TUN/TAP interface. # On non-Windows systems, you can give # an explicit unit number, such as tun0. # On Windows, use "dev-node" for this. # On most systems, the VPN will not function # unless you partially or fully disable # the firewall for the TUN/TAP interface. ;dev tap dev tun # Windows needs the TAP-Win32 adapter name # from the Network Connections panel if you # have more than one. • Python soap using soaplib (server) and suds (client)

    - by Celso Axelrud
This question is related to: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1751027/python-soap-server-client In the case of soap with python, there are recommendation to use soaplib (http://wiki.github.com/jkp/soaplib) as soap server and suds (https://fedorahosted.org/suds/) as soap client. My target is to create soap services in python that can be consumed by several clients (java, etc). I tried the HelloWorld example from soaplib (http://trac.optio.webfactional.com/wiki/HelloWorld). It works well when the client is also using soaplib. Then, I tried to use suds as client consuming the HelloWorld services and it fail. -Why this is happening? Does soaplib server has problems to consumed by different clients? Here the code for the server: from soaplib.wsgi_soap import SimpleWSGISoapApp from soaplib.service import soapmethod from soaplib.serializers.primitive import String, Integer, Arraycode class HelloWorldService(SimpleWSGISoapApp): @soapmethod(String,Integer,_returns=Array(String)) def say_hello(self,name,times): results = [] for i in range(0,times): results.append('Hello, %s'%name) return results if __name__=='__main__': from cherrypy.wsgiserver import CherryPyWSGIServer #from cherrypy._cpwsgiserver import CherryPyWSGIServer # this example uses CherryPy2.2, use cherrypy.wsgiserver.CherryPyWSGIServer for CherryPy 3.0 server = CherryPyWSGIServer(('localhost',7789),HelloWorldService()) server.start() This is the soaplib client: from soaplib.client import make_service_client from SoapServerTest_1 import HelloWorldService client = make_service_client('http://localhost:7789/',HelloWorldService()) print client.say_hello("Dave",5) Results: >>> ['Hello, Dave', 'Hello, Dave', 'Hello, Dave', 'Hello, Dave', 'Hello, Dave'] This is the suds client: from suds.client import Client url = 'http://localhost:7789/HelloWordService?wsdl' client1 = Client(url) client1.service.say_hello("Dave",5) Results: >>> Unhandled exception while debugging... • WCF fails to deserialize correct(?) response message security headers (Security header is empty)

    - by Soeteman
    I'm communicating with an OC4J webservice, using a WCF client. The client is configured as follows: <basicHttpBinding> <binding name="MyBinding"> <security mode="TransportWithMessageCredential"> <transport clientCredentialType="None" proxyCredentialType="None" realm=""/> <message clientCredentialType="UserName" algorithmSuite="Default"/> </security> </binding> My clientcode looks as follows: ServicePointManager.CertificatePolicy = new AcceptAllCertificatePolicy(); string username = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["user"]; string password = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["pass"]; // client instance maken WebserviceClient client = new WebserviceClient(); client.Endpoint.Binding = new BasicHttpBinding("MyBinding"); // credentials toevoegen client.ClientCredentials.UserName.UserName = username; client.ClientCredentials.UserName.Password = password; //uitvoeren request var response = client.Ping(); I've altered the CertificatePolicy to accept all certificates, because I need to insert Charles (ssl proxy) in between client and server to intercept the actual Xml that is sent across te wire. My request looks as follows: <s:Envelope xmlns:s="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/" xmlns:u="http://docs.oasis-open.org/wss/2004/01/oasis-200401-wss-wssecurity-utility-1.0.xsd"> <s:Header> <o:Security s:mustUnderstand="1" xmlns:o="http://docs.oasis-open.org/wss/2004/01/oasis-200401-wss-wssecurity-secext-1.0.xsd"> <u:Timestamp u:Id="_0"> <u:Created>2010-04-01T09:47:01.161Z</u:Created> <u:Expires>2010-04-01T09:52:01.161Z</u:Expires> </u:Timestamp> <o:UsernameToken u:Id="uuid-9b39760f-d504-4e53-908d-6125a1827aea-21"> <o:Username>user</o:Username> <o:Password o:Type="http://docs.oasis-open.org/wss/2004/01/oasis-200401-wss-username- token-profile-1.0#PasswordText">pass</o:Password> </o:UsernameToken> </o:Security> </s:Header> <s:Body> <getPrdStatus xmlns="http://mynamespace.org/wsdl"> <request xmlns="" xmlns:a="http://mynamespace.org/wsdl" xmlns:i="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"> <a:IsgrStsRequestTypeUser> <a:prdCode>LEPTO</a:prdCode> <a:sequenceNumber i:nil="true" /> <a:productionType i:nil="true" /> <a:statusDate>2010-04-01T11:47:01.1617641+02:00</a:statusDate> <a:ubn>123456</a:ubn> <a:animalSpeciesCode>RU</a:animalSpeciesCode> </a:IsgrStsRequestTypeUser> </request> </getPrdStatus> </s:Body> </s:Envelope> In return, I receive the following response: <env:Envelope xmlns:env="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:ns0="http://mynamespace.org/wsdl"> <env:Header> <wsse:Security xmlns:wsse="http://docs.oasis-open.org/wss/2004/01/oasis-200401-wss-wssecurity-secext-1.0.xsd" xmlns="http://docs.oasis-open.org/wss/2004/01/oasis-200401-wss-wssecurity-secext-1.0.xsd" xmlns:env="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/" env:mustUnderstand="1" /> </env:Header> <env:Body> <ns0:getPrdStatusResponse> <result> <ns0:IsgrStsResponseTypeUser> <ns0:prdCode>LEPTO</ns0:prdCode> <ns0:color>green</ns0:color> <ns0:stsCode>LEP1</ns0:stsCode> <ns0:sequenceNumber xsi:nil="1" /> <ns0:productionType xsi:nil="1" /> <ns0:IAndRCode>00</ns0:IAndRCode> <ns0:statusDate>2010-04-01T00:00:00.000+02:00</ns0:statusDate> <ns0:description>Gecertificeerd vrij</ns0:description> <ns0:ubn>123456</ns0:ubn> <ns0:animalSpeciesCode>RU</ns0:animalSpeciesCode> <ns0:name>gecertificeerd vrij</ns0:name> <ns0:ranking>17</ns0:ranking> </ns0:IsgrStsResponseTypeUser> </result> </ns0:getPrdStatusResponse> </env:Body> </env:Envelope> Why can't WCF deserialize this response header?   • Is there a client for Google Talk, for Mac, that allows phone calls?

    - by xtraorange
I'm having no luck finding a client for Google Talk that is both for Mac (OSX) and that allows phone calls (not just chatting with other Google Talk users). If I leave the browser page open to gmail, it will ring when I receive a call to my Google Voice number, and I can call out from my Google Voice number, but I don't want to use the browser. Is there any sort of client, for Mac, that will allow calls through Google Talk?

  • What is the difference between the Client and GTK versions of emacs?

    - by David
My Ubuntu 10.04 desktop has three versions of emacs: emacs-snapshot (client) emacs-snapshot (GTK) GNU Emacs 23 I mostly use emacs-snapshot, but I also use regular emacs in terminal mode emacs -nw. However, it is not clear to me what the difference is between the client and GTK versions of emacs-snapshot is, which one is launched by emacs-snapshot at the terminal, and if I should uninstall one or just ignore it.

  • WIF, ADFS 2 and WCF&ndash;Part 4: Service Client (using Service Metadata)

    - by Your DisplayName here!
See parts 1, 2 and 3 first. In this part we will finally build a client for our federated service. There are basically two ways to accomplish this. You can use the WCF built-in tooling to generate client and configuration via the service metadata (aka ‘Add Service Reference’). This requires no WIF on the client side. Another approach would be to use WIF’s WSTrustChannelFactory to manually talk to the ADFS 2 WS-Trust endpoints. This option gives you more flexibility, but is slightly more code to write. You also need WIF on the client which implies that you need to run on a WIF supported operating system – this rules out e.g. Windows XP clients. We’ll start with the metadata way. You simply create a new client project (e.g. a console app) – call ‘Add Service Reference’ and point the dialog to your service endpoint. What will happen then is, that VS will contact your service and read its metadata. Inside there is also a link to the metadata endpoint of ADFS 2. This one will be contacted next to find out which WS-Trust endpoints are available. The end result will be a client side proxy and a configuration file. Let’s first write some code to call the service and then have a closer look at the config file. var proxy = new ServiceClient(); proxy.GetClaims().ForEach(c =>     Console.WriteLine("{0}\n {1}\n  {2} ({3})\n",         c.ClaimType,         c.Value,         c.Issuer,         c.OriginalIssuer)); That’s all. The magic is happening in the configuration file. When you in inspect app.config, you can see the following general configuration hierarchy: <client /> element with service endpoint information federation binding and configuration containing ADFS 2 endpoint 1 (with binding and configuration) ADFS 2 endpoint n (with binding and configuration) (where ADFS 2 endpoint 1…n are the endpoints I talked about in part 1) You will see a number of <issuer /> elements in the binding configuration where simply the first endpoint from the ADFS 2 metadata becomes the default endpoint and all other endpoints and their configuration are commented out. You now need to find the endpoint you want to use (based on trust version, credential type and security mode) and replace that with the default endpoint. That’s it. When you call the WCF proxy, it will inspect configuration, then first contact the selected ADFS 2 endpoint to request a token. This token will then be used to authenticate against the service. In the next post I will show you the more manual approach using the WIF APIs.

  • Advantages to Server Scripting languages over Client Side Scripting languages

There are numerous advantages to server scripting languages over client side scripting languages in regards to creating web sites that are more compelling compared to a standard static site. Server side scripts are executed on a web server during the compilation of data to return to a client. These scripts allow developers to modify the content that is being sent to the user prior to the return of the data to the user as well as store information about the user. In addition, server side scripts allow for a controllable environment in which they can be executed. This cannot be said for client side languages because the developer cannot control the users’ environment compared to a web server. Some users may turn off client scripts, some may be only allow limited access on the system and others may be able to gain full control of the environment.  I have been developing web applications for over 9+ years, and I have used server side languages for most of the applications I have built.  Here is a list of common things I have developed with server side scripts. List of Common Generic Functionality: Send Email FTP Files Security/ Access Control Encryption URL rewriting Data Access Data Creation I/O Access The one important feature server side languages will help me with on my website is Data Access because my component will be backed with a SQL server database. I believe that form validation is one instance where I might see server side and client side scripts used interchangeably because it does not matter how or where the data is validated as long as the data that gets inserted is valid.

  • Token based Authentication for WCF HTTP/REST Services: The Client

    - by Your DisplayName here!
If you wondered how a client would have to look like to work with the authentication framework, it is pretty straightfoward: Request a token Put that token on the authorization header (along with a registered scheme) and make the service call e.g.: var oauth2 = new OAuth2Client(_oauth2Address); var swt = oauth2.RequestAccessToken( "username", "password", _baseAddress.AbsoluteUri);   var client = new HttpClient { BaseAddress = _baseAddress }; client.DefaultRequestHeaders.Authorization = new AuthenticationHeaderValue("Bearer", swt); var response = client.Get("identity"); response.EnsureSuccessStatusCode(); HTH

  • Appropriate response when client empowered with CMS destroys content to his own will

    - by dukeofgaming
So, I just recently closed a website project that pretty much was The Oatmeals' Design Hell, but with content. The client loved the site at the beginning but started getting other people involved and mercilessly bombarding us with their opinions. We served a carefully thought content strategy (which the client approved) and extremely curated copywriting that took us four months after at least 5 requirement changes (new content, new objectives for the business, changed offerings, new mindfaps, etc.) that required us to rewrite the content about 3 times. The client never gave timely feedback even though we kept the process open for him and his people to see (content being developed transparently in Google Docs). Near the end of the project he still wanted to make changes but wanted us to finish already (there are not enough words in the world to even try to make sense of this). So I explained to him the obvious implications of the never-ending requirement changes and advised him to take the time to gather his thoughts with his own team and see the new content introduced as a new content maintenance project. He happily accepted, but on the day of training/delivery things went very wrong and we have no idea why. The client didn't even allow the site to be out for a week with the content we developed for him and quickly replaced us with a Joomla savvy intern so that he completely destroy the content with shallow, unstructured, tasteless and plain wordsmithing (and I'm not even being visceral). Worst insult of all, he revoked our access from his server and the deployed CMS not even having passed 10 minutes of being given his administrator account (we realized the day after that he did it in our own office, the nerve!). Everybody involved in the team is enraged and insulted. I never want to see this happen again. So, to try to make sense of this situation and avoid it in the future with new clients I have two concrete questions: Is there even an appropriate course of action with a client like this?, or is he just not worth the trouble of analyzing (blindly hoping this never repeats again). In the exercise to try and blame ourselves instead of the client and take this as a lesson of... something, how should we set expectations for new clients about the working terms, process and final product so that they are discouraged from mauling the content to their own contempt once they get the codes to the nukes (access to the CMS)?

  • ldap client cannot contact ldap server

    - by Van
I have followed these instructions: https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/serverguide/openldap-server.html#openldap-auth-config The ldap server works fine. I can log into it using an ldap account. However, I configured another Ubuntu 12.04 server as a ldap client for authentication but I cannot contact the server. Here is the error: On the client: # ldapsearch -Q -LLL -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi://ldap01.domain.local -b cn=config dn ldap_sasl_interactive_bind_s: Can't contact LDAP server (-1) The server can receive requests: On the client: # telnet ldap01.domain.local 389 Trying 10.3.17.10... Connected to sisn01.domain.local. Escape character is '^]'. On the client: # ldapsearch -x -h ldap01.domain.local -b cn=config dn # extended LDIF # # LDAPv3 # base <cn=config> with scope subtree # filter: (objectclass=*) # requesting: dn # # search result search: 2 result: 32 No such object # numResponses: 1 On the server: # ps aux | grep slapd openldap 3759 0.0 0.2 564820 8228 ? Ssl 08:39 0:00 /usr/sbin/slapd -h ldap:/// ldapi:/// -g openldap -u openldap -F /etc/ldap/slapd.d I suspect I am missing a configuration parameter either on the server or on the client. I just cannot figure out what. Any help here would be appreciated.
