• Emptying Windows temp folder is a good idea?

  Am using DELL Inspiron with Windows 7. As far as I know emptying the windows temp folder would be good. But I faced a strange behaviour around 8 months back, when I clear my windows temp folder. The next day onwards, my laptop starting displaying daily one or other errors and one day OS got crashed. Till now I am not sure whether OS got crashed due to clearing the windows temp folder or something else is problem. Here Windows temp folder mean "C:\Windows\Temp" This is the behind the story. Today, this temp folder "C:\Windows\Temp" contains 102 GB Most of the space occupied by the files starts with etilqs_*.*. I came to know that these files are generated due to WD SmartWare. Now my problem is:- Actually I want clean up this folder, since it occupies lot of space. If I clean up "C:\Windows\Temp" folder, will my laptop face the same kind of problem which I faced earlier OR Any new problems will occur? Please suggest me a good solution.

• Windows 8 using as a webserver

  I have a few hobby websites that I currently host on CentOS 6. Apache, mail serving, PHP, MySQL nothing special. In the past I used Windows XP to do this same task, for years, and I was OK. I switched to Linux and for the last few years it has been such a pain. updates break, certain apps only support certain distros without compiling from source. It prevents me from working on my hobby sites more because I am always fixing something. With Windows I locked it down, I run a hardware firewall and packet analyser, kept up on updates and A/V and never had a problem. I dont allow RDC from outside the local LAN, no FTP open, run OpenSSH on an obscure port.. I am considering switching to Windows 8 (since it is a cheaper license now that Windows 7) and running apache, HMailServer, PHP, MySQL, just like my CentOS install. My questions: I am not familiar with Windows 8, can the above be done like XP? No new security restrictions or the OS preventing this from happening? The machine is a Athlon 64-bit X2 with 32GB of RAM. Will Windows 8 see all of the RAM? Technically the machine came with Windows 7, and there is a serial number on it but I am sure I wiped away the Windows 7 recovery partition when I switched to Linux....

• Installed Windows 7 Ultimate on D Drive and previous Windows 7 Enterprise on C Drive has stopped starting up

  Please please help! I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate on same hard drive on D Drive on my laptop and the previous Windows 7 Enterprise which was installed on C Drive is not booting up now. When I turn on my laptop, I see two Windows 7 on the screen, when I select newer one, it starts, but when I select older one which is Enterprise edition, system won't start and I get the DOS black screen with this error message: Windows Boot Manager Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next." Click "repair your computer." Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible. I notice that when I run the newer OS installed, the previous OS's drive (Which is D: now instead of C:) has become unusable and when I double click it, it asks me to format the drive. The data, that I had on my D Drive (Which is now C Drive for new OS), I had copied it to a network path and it is available. It was containing Windows 7 Users folder which I copied at that time when installing new windows. I have copied that Users folder again to the new OS's C Drive thinking it would run again, but of no use. Please please please...if someone can help...It is extremely required for me. • Customize your icons in Windows 7 and Vista

  Want to change out the icons on your desktop and more?  Personalizing your icons is a great way to make your PC uniquely yours,, and today we show you how to grab unique icons, and default Winnows. to be your own. Change the icon for Computer, Recycle Bin, Network, and your User folder Right-click on the desktop, and select Personalize. Now, click the “Change desktop icons” link on the left sidebar in the Personalization window. The window looks slightly different in Windows Vista, but the link is the same. Select the icon you wish to change, and click the Change Icon button.  In Windows 7, you will also notice a box to choose whether or not to allow themes to change icons, and you can uncheck it if you don’t want themes to change your icon settings. You can select one of the other included icons, or click browse to find the icon you want.  Click Ok when you are finished. Change Folder icons You can easily change the icon on most folders in Windows Vista and 7.  Simply right-click on the folder and select properties. Click the Customize tab, and then click the Change Icon button.  This will open the standard dialog to change your icon, so proceed as normal. This basically just creates a hidden desktop.ini file in the folder containing the following or similar data: [.ShellClassInfo]IconFile=%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dllIconIndex=20 You could manually create or edit the file if you choose, instead of using the dialogs. Simply create a new text file named desktop.ini with this same information, or edit the existing one.  Change the IconFile line to the location of your icon. If you are pointing to a .ico file you should change the IconIndex line to 0 instead. Note that this isn’t available for all folders, for instance you can’t use this to change the icon for the Windows folder.   In Windows 7, please note that you cannot change the icon of folder inside a library.  So if you are browsing your Documents library and would like to change an icon in that folder, right-click on it and select Open folder location.  Now you can change the icon as above. And if you would like to change a Library’s icon itself, then check out this tutorial: Change Your Windows 7 Library Icons the Easy Way Change the icon of any file type Want to make you files easier to tell apart?  Check out our tutorial on how to simply do this: Change a File Type’s Icon in Windows 7 Change the icon of any Application Shortcut To change the icon of a shortcut on your desktop, start menu, or in Explorer, simply right-click on the icon and select Properties. In the Shortcut tab, click the Change Icon button. Now choose one of the other available icons or click browse to find the icon you want. Change Icons of Running Programs in the Windows 7 taskbar If your computer is running Windows 7, you can customize the icon of any program running in the taskbar!  This only works on applications that are running but not pinned to the taskbar, so if you want to customize a pinned icon you may want to unpin it before customizing it.  But the interesting thing about this trick is that it can customize any icon anything running in the taskbar, including things like Control Panel! Right-click or click and push up to open the jumplist on the icon, and then right-click on the program’s name and select Properties.  Here we are customizing Control Panel, but you can do this on any application icon. Now, click Change Icon as usual. Select an icon you want (We switched the Control Panel icon to the Security Shield), or click Browse to find another icon.  Click Ok when finished, and then close the application window. The next time you open the program (or Control Panel in our example), you will notice your new icon on its taskbar icon. Please note that this only works on applications that are currently running and are not pinned to the taskbar.  Strangely, if the application is pinned to the taskbar, you can still click Properties and change the icon, but the change will not show up. Change the icon on any Drive on your Computer You can easily change the icon on your internal hard drives and portable drives with the free Drive Icon Changer application.  Simply download and unzip the file (link below), and then run the application as administrator by right-clicking on the icon and selecting “Run as administrator”. Now, select the drive that you want to change the icon of, and select your desired icon file. Click Save, and Drive Icon Changer will let you know that the icon has been changed successfully. You will then need to reboot your computer to complete the changes.  Simply click Yes to reboot. Now, our Drive icon is changed from this default image: to a Laptop icon we chose! You can do this to any drive in your computer, or to removable drives such as USB flash drives.  When you change these drives icons, the new icon will appear on any computer you insert the drive into.  Also, if you wish to remove the icon change, simply run the Drive Icon Changer again and remove the icon path. Download Drive Icon Changer This application actually simply creates or edits a hidden Autorun.inf file on the top of your drive.  You can edit or create the file yourself by hand if you’d like; simply include the following information in the file, and save it in the top directory of your drive: [autorun]ICON=[path of your icon] Remove Arrow from shortcut icons Many people don’t like the arrow on the shortcut icon, and there are two easy ways to do this. If you’re running the 32 bit version of Windows Vista or 7, simply use the Vista Shortcut Overlay Remover. • Make the Taskbar Buttons Switch to the Last Active Window in Windows 7

  The new Windows 7 taskbar’s Aero Peek feature, with the live thumbnails of every window, is awesome… but sometimes you just want to be able to click the taskbar button and have the last open window show up instead. Here’s a quick hack to make it work better. To better understand the problem, imagine having nine windows of the same type open on your screen, but you are primarily working in just one of the windows at a time. So every time you want to switch back, you have to click the taskbar button, and then choose the one you are using from the list, which can be pretty annoying… Now if you know your Windows 7 shortcuts, you’d know that you can simply hold down the Ctrl key while clicking on the taskbar button, and the last window will show up. In fact, you can keep holding down the Ctrl key and keep clicking, and Windows will cycle through the open windows. It’s a useful shortcut, but hardly something you want to do every single time. Instead, we’ll use a quick registry hack to make the normal click switch to the last open window—if you still want to see the thumbnail list, just hover your mouse over the button for half a second to see the full list. Manual Registry Hack for Last Active Window Open up regedit.exe through the start menu search or run box, and then head down to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced Once you’re there, create a new 32-bit DWORD value on the right hand side, give it the name LastActiveClick, and set the value to 1. Once you are done, it should look something like this: Once you are done, you’ll have to log off and back on, or you can kill Explorer.exe through Task Manager and re-open it. Download the Registry Hack Instead Since you probably don’t feel like registry hacking, we’ve provided you an easy downloadable version. You can simply download the file, extract it, and then double-click on the LastActiveClick.reg file. Once you are done, you’ll have to log off and back on, just like with the manual registry hack. • How can I restore "Open With" context menu item in Windows 7?

  I tried various way to fix this problem but ended up with a dead end. My problem would be the missing "Open With" context menu items (or subitems?). It did not appear even though I hovered it for a minutes or two. Below is a screenshot of the respective right-click menu. Note: The only problem with "Open With" is at the right-click menu (as well as FILE menu). Edited: The "Open With" context submenu that only accessible at the top, while the typical right click menu doesn't work. Repaste from Comment. I don't think it's involved with any windows files because other user in the same computer doesn't affected at all. I can see the "Open With" context submenu. I believe this must have involved with current user's registry. It happens to all files (any file types, except folder). I can only use Open With by clicking at the file and select it manually at the top of Explorer window. (Refer to the link for the screenshot)

  I've been investigating an issue with a production Classic ASP website running on IIS6 which seems indicative of memory fragmentation. One of the suggestions of how to ameliorate this came from Stackoverflow: How can I find why some classic asp pages randomly take a real long time to execute?. It suggested flipping a setting in the site's global.asa file to 'turn on' Low Fragmentation Heap (LFH). The following code (with a registered version of the accompanying DLL) did the trick. Set LFHObj=CreateObject("TURNONLFH.ObjTurnOnLFH") LFHObj.TurnOnLFH() application("TurnOnLFHResult")=CStr(LFHObj.TurnOnLFHResult) (Really the code isn't that important to the question). An author of a linked post reported a seemingly magic resolution to this issue, and, reading around a little more, I discovered that this setting is enabled by default on Windows Server 2008. So, naturally, this left me a little concerned: Why is this setting not enabled by default on 2003, or If it works in 2008 why have Microsoft not issued a patch to enable it by default on 2003? I suspect the answer to the above is the same for both (if there is one). Obviously, we're testing it in a non-production environment, and doing an array of metrics and comparisons to deem if it does help us. But aside from this I'm really just trying to understand if there's any technical reason why we should do this, or if there are any gotchas that we need to be aware of.

  My friend just updated her Windows Vista to service pack 1, or tried to. Now it wont boot up. Just black screen, some errors etc. I tried googling it and lots of people had this problem it seems. Anyone find a fix for it? I read somewhere I believe that Microsoft said to delete some files, Nvidia maybe? But I can not find that again, I forgot the exact error code I searched for before.   I have a problem, I have written a simple Media Player for Windows Phone 7 and can Play, Stop and control the Volume of a Video (loaded from a URI) however when I try to set the position, this causes the application to freeze. I have used both these lines, but either does not work: Player.Position = new TimeSpan(0, 0, 0, 0, (int)Position.Value); Player.Position = TimeSpan.FromSeconds((int)(Position.Value)); I do have this event handler: void Player_MediaOpened(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { Position.Maximum = Player.NaturalDuration.TimeSpan.TotalMilliseconds; } And have tried using the Seconds value, casting to Ints etc, however everytime I try to set the Position, the app freezes. The video otherwise plays normally - anyone know what the problem may be here?

• Collision Detection on floor tiles Isometric game

  I am having a very hard to time figuring out a bug in my code. It should have taken me 20 minutes but instead I've been working on it for over 12 hours. I am writing a isometric tile based game where the characters can walk freely amongst the tiles, but not be able to cross over to certain tiles that have a collides flag. Sounds easy enough, just check ahead of where the player is going to move using a Screen Coordinates to Tile method and check the tiles array using our returned xy indexes to see if its collidable or not. if its not, then don't move the character. The problem I'm having is my Screen to Tile method isn't spitting out the proper X,Y tile indexes. This method works flawlessly for selecting tiles with the mouse. NOTE: My X tiles go from left to right, and my Y tiles go from up to down. Reversed from some examples on the net. I understand this is probably the most confusing and horribly written post ever, but I'm confused myself so I'm having a hard time explaining it to others lol. if you need more information please ask!! I'm so frustrated after over 12 hours of working on it I'm about to give up.

• Should I make the Cells in a Tiledmap as null when my player hits it

  I am making a Tile Based game using Libgdx. I took the idea from SuperKoalio platformer demo by Mario Zencher. When I wanted to implement Collectables in my game , I simply draw the coins using Tiled Map Editor. When my player hits that, I use to set that cell as null. Someday on this site suggested me not to do so... never use null. I agreed. What can be any other way. If I am using layer.setCell(x,y) to set the cell to any other cell... even if an transparent one .. my player seems to be stopped by an invisible object/hurdle. • How do you get Windows Mobile Device Center to detect a Windows Phone 7 Series emulator?

  Hello, I'm running some tests and need to be able to get Windows Phone 7 Series emulator synced with an exchange account or local Outlook account via the Device Center. I'm using the unlocked version of the emulator so that i actually have a reasonable set of software on the phone to work with. When the emulator launches i expect the Device Center to detect it and start syncing (or prompt me for settings). This does not happen. I've tried adjusting the Connection Settings (COM2 and DMA) in the Device Center with no luck. Is this possible? Has anyone done it? Thanks in advance!

I changed the color depth to 256 colors and the folder icons in Windows Explorer changed to the flat - windows 95/98 style icons.   I have an old Acer Aspire T180 desktop. The specs are as follows: AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 2.4GHz 1GB DDR2 SDRAM 160GB DVD-Writer (DVD±R/±RW) Gigabit Ethernet 17" Active Matrix TFT Color LCD Windows Vista Home Basic Mini-tower AST180-UA381B According to the information in the computer's documentation the computer comes with 1 GB of RAM. It has two DDR2 SDRAM sticks. I used to have Windows Vista installed. Then I removed it and install Windows 7, and now I have since removed Windows 7 and installed Windows XP. According to Windows XP with both RAM sticks in the computer has 768 MB. Isn't this supposed to be 1 GB of RAM or 1024 MB of RAM? Is the amount of RAM installed only partly used by the Operating System? Is there's something I'm missing? If I remove either one of the RAM sticks I'm left with 448 MB of RAM. These numbers don't seem to add up. If each of the RAM sticks contains at least 448 MB of RAM shouldn't they (both being in) provide 896 MB of RAM. Even then, isn't that less than a GB of RAM? I'm not too experienced in hardware so I thought this would be the best place to ask. As a follow up question, is the RAM I have enough to run/multitask with Windows XP efficiently? I plan to do a lot of computing with the system (although not gaming), should I invest in more RAM?

  One of the biggest annoyances with a dual-boot system is having to wait for your PC to reboot to select the operating system you want to switch to, but there’s a simple piece of software that can make this process easier. This guest article was written by Ryan Dozier from the Doztech tech blog. With a small piece of software called iReboot we can skip the above step all together and instantly reboot into the operating system we want right from Windows. Their description says: “Instead of pressing restart, waiting for Windows to shut down, waiting for your BIOS to post, then selecting the operating system you want to boot into (within the bootloader time-limit!); you just select that entry from iReboot and let it do the rest!” Don’t worry about iReboot reconfiguring  your bootloader or any dual boot configuration you have. iReboot will only boot the selected operating system once and go back to your default settings. Using iReboot iReboot is quick and easy to install. Just download it, link below, run through the setup and select the default configuration. iReboot will automatically figure out what operating systems you have installed and appear in the taskbar. Go over to the taskbar and right click on the iReboot icon and select which operating system you want to reboot into. This method will add a check mark on the operating system you want to boot into. On your next reboot the system will automatically load your choice and skip the Windows Boot Manager. If you want to reboot automatically just select “Reboot on Selection” in the iReboot menu.   To be even more productive, you can install iReboot into each Windows operating system to quickly access the others with a few simple clicks.   iReboot does not work in Linux so you will have to reboot manually. Then wait for the Windows Boot Manager to load and select your operating system.   Conclusion iReboot works on  Windows XP, Windows Vista,  and Windows 7 as well as 64 bit versions of these operating systems. Unfortunately iReboot is only available for Windows but you can still use its functionality in Windows to quickly boot up your Linux machine. A simple reboot in Linux will take you back to Windows Boot Manager. Today I wanted to update my computer using Windows Update but it does give me error : Error(s) found: Code 80244004        Windows Update encountered an unknown error. • Can't boot up computer windows 8 installation

  I wanted to install Windows 8 with a volume partition and when the Windows 8 was installing it rebooted and it gave me an error: The digital signature for this file couldn't be verified. File :windows \system 32\winload.exe error code 0xc0000428. I have tried bootec commands and they didn't seem to fix it. Also my Windows 7 got deleted and I only have to boot with the Windows 8 error, so I can't do anything not even boot to safe mode. I have tried to install Windows 8 from disk later on and it won't let me because it keeps rebooting and starting the installation again, so I took off the disk before it rebooted and it takes me to that error again. Remember that's my only boot option so I'm stuck in the installation disk.

• windows firewall broken on server 2008

  This evening I tried to rdp into my server 2008 box and was unable to. After poking around some I discovered that something is awry with my Windows Firewall. I did install 5 windows updates remotely earlier today but rolled those back in an attempt to see if that fixed the problem but had no luck. Symptoms: cannot rdp to machine (including from itself) cannot ping machine cannot connect to file share on machine error message when attempting to open "windows firewall with advanced security" snap-in (there was an error opening the windows firewall with advanced security snap-in ... The Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in failed to load. Restart the windows firewall service on the computer that you are managing. Error code: 0x6D9. When I opened the "user-friendly" Windows Firewall it failed to load most of the gui elements, meaning, the title bar with close, minimize, and maximize buttons is present, the rest of the window has a white background with a yellow rectangle with rounded corners and a yellow triangle w/ an exclamation point is in the upper right. hope that made sense "Windows Firewall" does not appear in the list of services I ran a virus scan that found nothing. How do I fix the firewall and hopefully restore the ability to rdp? The problem seems to be with the Base Filtering Engine, when I try to start it I get the following error: Windows could not start the Base Filtering Engine service on MYCOMPUTER. Error 15100: The resource loader failed to find MUI file. EDIT2: I ran sfc /scannow and i found about 100 occurrences of "[SR] Cannot repair member file"... including several related to the firewall (ex: [l:32{16}]"Firewall.cpl.mui" of Networking-MPSSVC.Resources...). One of them mentioned wordpad.exe, which I tried to open, and it failed. I found here mentions of mounting the install.wim on the install media to copy the affected files over. I am downloading the appropriate AIK and will continue tomorrow evening.
