• Software RAID to hardware RAID, can it be done?

  Can it be done ... well. (For the record, I did not set this server up.) In my server there are 4 disks. 3 of them are in a software RAID5, and 1 has the OS installed. I want to buy a RAID controller, 4 new HDs and set up a hardware RAID5. If possible, I'd like to just image the current setup, and use it to build my new one. My questions are: Can I image a 3 disk RAID5 to 4 disk RAID5? Are there problems with this? What is considered best practice for your OS. To have it on a separate disk like it currently is, or to install it on the RAID5? Thank you. I can clarify anything. I'm not sure what other info might be pertinent.

• Designing web-based plugin systems correctly so they don't waste as many resources?

  Many CMS systems which rely on third parties for much of their code often build "plugin" or "hooks" systems to make it easy for developers to modify the codebase's actions without editing the core files. This usually means an Observer or Event design pattern. However, when you look at systems like wordpress you see that on every page they load some kind of bootstrap file from each of the plugin's folders to see if that plugin will need to run that request. Its this poor design that causes systems like wordpress to spend many extra MB's of memory loading and parsing unneeded items each page. Are there alternative ways to do this? I'm looking for ideas in building my own. For example, Is there a way to load all this once and then cache the results so that your system knows how to lazy-load plugins? In other words, the system loads a configuration file that specifies all the events that plugin wishes to tie into and then saves it for future requests? If that also performs poorly, then perhaps there is a special file-structure that could be used to make educated guesses about when certain plugins are unneeded to fullfil the request. Any ideas? • Compiled code spreadsheet-like cell management? (auto-updating)

  Okay so I am fully aware how spreadsheets manage cells, they build dependency graphs where when one cell changes it tells all the other cells that are dependent on it that it changed. So they can from there update. How they update I think involves either re-evaluating the formulas stored as strings, or re-evaluating the abstract syntax tree which I think is stored differently and might be faster. Something like that. What I'm looking to do is manage a few variables in my code so I don't have to update them in the correct way, which would be a nightmare. But I also want it much faster than spreadsheets. And since I'm not looking for any functionality as great as are in these spreadsheets, I just figured from that thought point that there has to be a way to have a very fast implementation of this functionality. Especially since I don't have to modify cells after compiling unless that would be an option. I'm very new to programming so I have no idea. One example might be to have a code-generator that generates code that does this for me. But I have no clue what the generated code would look like. Specifically, how exactly would variables inform others that they need to update, and what do those variables do to update? I'm looking for any kind of ideas. Programming is not my job but nonetheless I was hoping to have some kind of system like this that would greatly help me with some stuff. Of course I have been programming plenty lately so I can still program. I just don't have the full scope on things. I'm looking for any kind of ideas, thank you very much in advance! Also, please help me with the tags. I know C# and Java mainly and I'm hoping to implement this in either of those languages and I'm hoping this can stay in those tags. Forcing this into some kind of spreadsheet tag wouldn't be accurate.

Eric’s talk focused mostly on unit testing, and that the lack of proper unit testing can be compared to stealing from an employer. His point was that if you’re not doing proper unit testing then all of the time wasted on fixing issues that could have been detected with unit tests is like stealing money from employer. He makes the assumption that that time spent on fixing these issues could have been better spent developing new features that drive the business. To a point I can agree with Eric’s argument regarding unit testing and stealing from a company’s perspective. I can see how he relates resources being shifted from new development to bug fixes as stealing based on the fact that the resources used to fix bugs are directly taken from other projects. He also states that Boring/Redundant and Build/Test tasks should be automated because it reduces the changes of errors and frees up developer to do what they do best, DEVELOP! When he refers to testing, he breaks testing down in to four distinct types. Unit Test Acceptance Test (This also includes Integration Tests) Performance Test UI Test With this he also recommends that developers should not go buck wild striving for 100% code coverage because some test my not provide a great return on investment. In his experience he recommends that 70% test coverage was a very acceptable rate.

My Oracle Support Communities (MOSC)  is a well established platform where experiences are shared. Reputation and trust are the basis for the quality of all communication there. A personalized  profile can help to build up a good reputation. Besides the experience counter, a good name, details about your location and business experience are valuable details. Although a little bit hidden, the profile's avatar can be customized, too. The profile's avatar is an eye catcher and can act as an unique visual representation for  you.  How to add / modify MOSC profile avatar (picture, icon)  ?    Don't look in Edit Profile section. After login, click on  your profile's name on top right.   This lists all public information as part of the Bio section. Select the Activity tab. The Change Avatar link is on same level at far right. A list of predefined symbolic pictures is populated. Choose from the list of existing pictures or try Add Another to upload an image file from your local computer (JPG, PNG, GIF, or BMP only, maximum file size of 2.0 MB). Note: New added images can be used only after running through a review process. Usually after one business day they can be selected for your personal avatar.

• What partition to use to keep data files in Ubuntu?

  I have been using Ubuntu for a few years and usually my partition set up was the following: Ext3 or Ext4 partition for the system itself (20 GB); A 10 GB swap partition; a big FAT32 partition to store movies, photos, work stuff, etc. (depends on the capacity of the disk, but usually it is what is left from Ext3+Swap, currently it is more than 200 GB). Does this setup sound right? I am considering to switching to one big Ext3 partition now, because the problem with Fat32 in Ubuntu has not gone anywhere: for example, right now I can access my 'big' partition with a 'Data' label only through /media/_themes?END. Pretty strange name for a partition, isn't it? some Linux software fail to read/write on this partition. For example, if I want to play around with rebar and build/make/compile things on this FAT32 partition, it will always complain about permissions and won't work (the same goes for many other kinds of software); it is not stable, I can not refer to some files on this FAT32 partition, because after the next reboot it will be called not '_themes?END', but something else. On the other side I usually begin to run out of space on the Ext3 partition after a few months of usage. So, the question is - what is the best setup of partitions for an Ubuntu system? Should a FAT32 partition be used at all?

• Ray Tracing concers: Efficient Data Structure and Photon Mapping

  I'm trying to build a simple ray tracer for specific target scenes. An example of such scene can be seen below. I'm concerned as to what accelerating data structure would be most efficient in this case since all objects are touching but on the other hand, the scene is uniform. The objects in my ray tracer are stored as a collection of triangles, thus I also have access to individual triangles. Also, when trying to find the bounding box of the scene, how should infinite planes be handled? Should one instead use the viewing frustum to calculate the bounding box? A few other questions I have are about photon mapping. I've read the original paper by Jensen and many more material. In the compact data structure for the photon they introduce, they store photon power as 4 chars, which from my understanding is 3 chars for color and 1 for flux. But I don't understand how 1 char is enough to store a flux of the order of 1/n, where n is the number of photons (I'm also a bit confused about flux vs power). The other question about photon mapping is, if it would be more efficient in my case to store photons per object (or even per Object's triangle) instead of using a balanced kd-tree. Also, same question about bounding box of the scene but for photon mapping. How should one find a bounding box from the pov of the light when infinite planes are involved?

• Chrome: Black Screen of Death

  I dont know when it started to happen. The screen will turn into full black when a page include javascript (I think so). I cannot open Youtube videos, but I can still see the source code and the pointer to find links and buttons and I can hear the sound of video. I have tried to clear my cache and reinstalled to the latest version, but nothing seems work. Moreover, I have disabled the Pepperflash Player as well, but it did not help. This my chrome version Google Chrome 22.0.1229.79 (Official Build 158531) OS Windows WebKit 537.4 (@129177) JavaScript V8 3.12.19.11 Flash 11.3.31.331 Please help.

• WiFi connected to router, but no internet connection

  I just got a new notebook, a ThinkPad Edge E530, and installed Ubuntu on it. I'm pretty new to Ubuntu. On the same laptop, running Windows 7, the Wi-Fi connection works fine. Ethernet connection works both on Win7 and on Ubuntu. Only Wi-Fi on Ubuntu does not work; it connects to the Wi-Fi access point but I don't have Internet access. My wireless card is Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230. What can fix the problem? • Technology Choice for a Client Application [on hold]

  Not sure this is the right place to ask... I'm involved in the development of a new system, and now we are passing the demos stage. We need to build a proper client application. The platform we care most about is Windows, for now at least, but we would love to support other platforms, as long as it's free :-). Or at least very cheap. We anticipate two kinds of users: Occasional, coming mostly from the web. Professional, who would probably require more features, and better performance, and probably would prefer to see a native client. Our server exposes two APIs: A SOAP API, WCF behind the scenes, that supports 100% of the functionality. A small and very fast UDP + Binary API, that duplicates some of the functionality and is intended for the sake of performance for certain real-time scenarios. Our team is mostly proficient in .Net, C#, C++ development, and rather familiar with Web development (HTML, JavaScript). We are probably intending to develop two clients (for both user profiles), a web app, and a native app. Architecturally, we would like to have as many common components as possible. We would like to have several layers: Communication, Client Model, Client Logic, shared by both of the clients. We would also like to be able to add features to both clients when only the actual UI is a dual cost, and the rest is shared. We are looking at several technologies: WPF + Silverlight, Pure HTML, Flash / Flex (AIR?), Java (JavaFx?), and we are considering poking at WinRT(or whatever the proper name is). The question is which technology would you recommend and why? And which advantages or disadvantages will it have regarding our requirements?

  I want the display text on an Action on a Node to show something about the underlying object. But the Action is registered somewhere in the layer (i.e., in the registry), i.e., I have no control over it. How do I change the display text in this scenario? Here's how. • VMWare tools on Ubuntu Server 10.10 kernel source problem

  After install and running the vm-ware config, the config needs my kernel headers to compile some modules, ok, so I'll give it them, but it just won't work. It asks for the path of the directory of C header files that match my running kernel. If I uname -r I get 2.6.35-22-generic-pae So I tell it the source path is /lib/modules/2.6.25-22-generic-pae/build/include and it returns "The directory of kernel headers (version @@VMWARE@@ UTS_RELEASE) does not match your running kernel (version 2.6.35-22-generic-pae). ..I'm confused? can anyone offer suggestions please? I installed hte kernel source andh eaders myself using sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)

• HP Rapid Deployment - Change Data Store Path

  I am running HP Rapid Deployment (Altiris eXpress Deployment Server 6.9 - Build 164) on an inherited Windows Server 2003 SP2. I need to change the Data Store Path as the default is pointing to the C: drive and there is not enough space there. I would like to set it to the D: drive where there is plenty of space. Reading the documentation: Data store path: Specifies the path to stored packages and files and other DS functions (such as license verification). The default path is C:\Program files\Altiris\express\Deployment Server. Note: Do not use this setting to change the path to the Deployment Share. Modifying this setting does not automatically allow you to use another shared directory other than the express share. To change the Deployment Share shared directory, run a Custom install to establish another location for the Deployment Share. Is there any other way I can change the path as I do not have the install media?

  If you’re looking for an effective way to link remote LANs without the hassle of laying cable, this DIY bi-directional antenna is a quick (and cheap) method for bringing internet access to outbuildings and other locations. Tinker Danilo Larizza needed to share internet access between apartments that are relatively close together but not hardwired–ruling out simply sharing the access via existing LAN infrastructure. His solution combines a simple scrap wire antenna array mounted inside a plastic food bin (seen here with the cover removed to show the antenna) and some coaxial cable to link the antenna to two routers. Our favorite part about his build is that he constructed the pair to establish if the antenna setup would even work in his location and intended to buy commercial antennas if it did; his Tupperware models worked so well, however, they’re now the permanent solution. • Building new GIS Workstation - is it worth upgrading to a workstation GPU?

  We are currently building a machine from scratch to act as a GIS workstation. The primary software used is ESRI's ArcGIS and we are mainly working with vector data using raster data only for contextual background imagery. In the past I have built a GIS machine and used a consumer grade gaming GPU (Nvidia 9800GT) and found it to perform fine. However, I have always wondered if I would have been better off equipping it with a workstation GPU such as a Quadro series. Would a workstation GPU make a noticeable difference doing 2D GIS operations or should I save money on the build and equip it with another 9800GT?

  I am trying to build an Entity Component System for an interactive application developed using C++ and OpenGL. My question is quite simple. In my GameObject class I have a collection of Components. I can add and retrieve components. class GameObject: public Object { public: GameObject(std::string objectName); ~GameObject(void); Component * AddComponent(std::string name); Component * AddComponent(Component componentType); Component * GetComponent (std::string TypeName); Component * GetComponent (<Component Type Here>); private: std::map<std::string,Component*> m_components; }; I will have a collection of components that inherit from the base Components class. So if I have a meshRenderer component and would like to do the following GameObject * warship = new GameObject("myLovelyWarship"); MeshRenderer * meshRenderer = warship->AddComponent(MeshRenderer); or possibly MeshRenderer * meshRenderer = warship->AddComponent("MeshRenderer"); I could be make a Component Factory like this: class ComponentFactory { public: static Component * CreateComponent(const std::string &compTyp) { if(compTyp == "MeshRenderer") return new MeshRenderer; if(compTyp == "Collider") return new Collider; return NULL; } }; However, I feel like I should not have to keep updating the Component Factory every time I want to create a new custom Component but it is an option. Is there a more proper way to add and retrieve these components? Is standard templates another solution?

• SAPPHIRE HD 7770 no audio on HDMI TV display

  I have SAPPHIRE HD 7770 and cannot get work audio over HDMI. http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1159&lid=1&pid=1452&leg=0 I use Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-bit version with all current updates. I tried at /etc/default/grub: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash radeon.audio=1" ... it didn't help. It's probably I use proprietary driver -this seems to be open source driver. I use the driver, what jockey-gtk (additional drivers) offered me: ATI/AMD PROPRIETARY FGLRX GRAPHICS DRIVER <---- I installed that one ATI/AMD PROPRIETARY FGLRX GRAPHICS DRIVER (post-release update) So - I installed the first one, because installing second version failed. Everything went fine but no sound at TV display by HDMI. Even Gnome sound mixer doesn't show HDMI choice. Using 32" Samsung B530 LCD TV - http://www.lcdbesttv.com/2010/02/samsung-b530-series-lcd-tv/ I have Asus P8Z77-M motherboard - http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8Z77M/ - there is also HDMI integrated. When I put HDMI cord to that plug, then even Gnome sound mixer showed HDMI audio but it didn't work. I have set from BIOS, that I use that SAPPHIRE HD 7770 from PCIe. • New Book - Oracle ADF Enterprise Application Development Made Simple

  It's nice to see another ADF book out there, this one from Sten Vesteli titled "Oracle ADF Enterprise Application Development Made Simple" comes from Packet Publishing Unlike other ADF books out there, this one doesn't aim to teach you Oracle ADF, but rather focuses on the right way to structure and manage a project that leverages ADF. This is a welcomed addition to the bookshelf for people who are looking into ADF based development. One thing I find is that some organization just start developing an ADF application without first doing much planning, something that is understandable given that it is very easy to start building a prototype with ADF and then just grow it into a full blown application. However, as the book points out, doing a bit of planning before you delve into the actual project development can save you a lot of time in the future. For example it is much better to have the right breakdown and structure of your project to allow you to do efficient team development right out of the gate, then to find out 1 year down the road that you are dealing with one monolithic size project which is hard to manage. The book touches on such topics as project organization (workspaces, projects, packages), planning your infrastructure (templates, framework classes), coding standards, team structure, etc. It also covers various aspects of application lifecycle management such as versioning, build, testing, deployment and managing requirements and tasks and how all of those are done when using JDeveloper and Oracle ADF. It's nice to see that the book covers working with Oracle Team Productivity Center - a solution that might not be getting the exposure it deserves. The book also has some chapters about security, internalization and customization of applications both with MDS and with ADF Faces skins (and it even covers the brand new skin editor). Overall I think this is definitely a book you should read if you are about to start your way on a new enterprise scale ADF application. Taking into account the topics that the book discusses before you start your work will save you time and effort down the road.   I am about to embark on a great journey – over the next 6 weeks I plan to read through C++ Numerical Recipes 3rd edition http://amzn.to/YtdpkS I'll be reading this with an eye to C++ AMP, thinking about implementing the suitable subset (non-recursive, additive, commutative) to run on the GPU. APIs supporting HPC, GPGPU or MapReduce are all useful – providing you have the ability to choose the correct algorithm to leverage on them. I really think this is the most fascinating area of programming – a lot more exciting than LOB CRUD !!! When you think about it , everything is a function – we categorize & we extrapolate. As abstractions get higher & less leaky, sooner or later information systems programming will become a non-programmer task – you will be using WYSIWYG designers to build: GUIs MVVM service mapping & virtualization workflows ORM Entity relations In the data source SharePoint / LightSwitch are not there yet, but every iteration gets closer. For information workers, managed code is a race to the bottom. As MS futures are a bit shaky right now, the provider agnostic nature & higher barriers of entry of both C++ & Numerical Analysis seem like a rational choice to me. Its also fascinating – stepping outside the box. This is not the first time I've delved into numerical analysis. 6 months ago I read Numerical methods with Applications, which can be found for free online: http://nm.mathforcollege.com/ 2 years ago I learned the .NET Extreme Optimization library www.extremeoptimization.com – not bad 2.5 years ago I read Schaums Numerical Analysis book http://amzn.to/V5yuLI - not an easy read, as topics jump back & forth across chapters: 3 years ago I read Practical Numerical Methods with C# http://amzn.to/V5yCL9 (which is a toy learning language for this kind of stuff) I also read through AI a Modern Approach 3rd edition END to END http://amzn.to/V5yQSp - this took me a few years but was the most rewarding experience.
