  My understanding of the Git pack file format is something like: Where the table is 32-bits wide, and the first three 32-bit words are the pack file header. The last row of 32 bits are the first 4 bytes of an entry. As I understand it, the size of the entry is specified by consecutive bytes with the MSB set, followed by compressed data. In the first byte whose MSB is not set, is the MSB part of the compressed data, or is it a gap? If it's part of the compressed data, how can you guarantee that when the data is compressed that bit won't be set?

  Hi, I am able to display any data (numbers) in Flex AdvancedDataGrid except data with lot of digits after decimal places (0.000000000029103830456733704) or exponential numbers (293E-17). Grid is displaying -17 instead of 293E-17. Is it happening because of any limit to displaying data range in grid? If yes, what is the limit? Thanks in advance ... Atul

• Can Git or Mercurial be set to bypass the local repository and go straight to the central one?

  Using Git or Mercurial, if the working directory is 1GB, then the local repository will be another 1GB (at least), residing normally in the same hard drive. And then when pushed to a central repository, there will be another 1GB. Can Git or Mercurial be set to use only a working directory and then a central repository, without having 3 copies of this 1GB data? (actually, when the central repository also update, then there are 4 copies of the same data... can it be reduced? In the SVN scenario, when there are 5 users, then there will be 6GB of data total. With Distributed Version Control, then there will be 12GB of data?)

• Thoughts/Input about Database Design for a CMS

  I'm just about to expand the functionality of our own CMS but was thinking of restructuring the database to make it simpler to add/edit data types and values. Currently, the CMS is quite flat - the CMS requires a field in the database for every type of stored value (manually created). The first option that comes to mind is simply a table which keeps the data types (ie: Address 1, Suburb, Email Address etc) and another table which holds values for each of these data types. Just like how Wordpress keeps values in the 'options' table, PHP serialize would be used to store an array of values. The second option is how Drupal works, the CMS creates tables for every data type. Unlike Wordpress, this can be a bit of an overkill but really useful for SQL queries when ordering and grouping by a particular value. What's everyone's thoughts?

  My iPhone app embeds a UIWebView which loads html via a custom NSProtocol handler I have registered. My problem is that resources referenced in the returned html, which are also loaded via my custom protocol handler, are cached and never reloaded. I thought clearing the shared url cache would work, but it doesnt: [[NSURLCache sharedURLCache] removeAllCachedResponses]; One thing that does work, but it's terribly inefficient, is to dynamically cache-bust the url for the stylesheet by adding a timestamp parameter: <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="./styles.css?ts=1234567890" /> To make this work I have to load my html from the db, search and replace the url for the stylesheet with a cache-busting parameter that changes on each request. I'd rather not do this. My presumption is that there is no problem if I were to load my content via the built-in HTTP protocol. In that case, I'm guessing that the UIWebView looks at any Cache-Control flags in the NSURLHTTPResponse object's http headers and abides by them. Since my NSURLResponseObject has no http headers (it's not http...) then perhaps UIWebView just decides to cached the resource (ignoring the NSURLRequest caching directive?). Ideas???

• Image rendering on browser or temporary images?

  I'm trying to make a statistics page where it will show several data and charts. The charts need to be pictures so that the user can save it/drag-and-drop to his/her personal reports. I'm using Gruff Graphs for Ruby to produce the charts but I don't know the best way to display the results safe and protected. Some of my ideas/tries are: save the chart to a file (jpg, png)? problem: data is available to anyone (don't have access to cron, to delete data from time to time) render in the browser (has to work on IE)? Use javascript (Raphaël—JavaScript Library) or Google API and output a PDF report (need plugin or gem, right)? use send_data? i've tried to output other way than inline, because I needs to show other data, is it possible? • Casting to a struct from LPVOID - C

  Hello, I am writing a simple console application which will allow me to create a number of threads from a set of parameters passed through the arguments I provide. DWORD WINAPI ThreadFunc(LPVOID threadData) { } I am packing them into a struct and passing them as a parameter into the CreateThread method and trying to unpack them by casting them to the same type as my struct from the LPVOID. I'm not sure how to cast it to the struct after getting it through so I can use it in the method itself, i've tried various combinations (Example attatched) but it won't compile.   As a newb to jQuery im wondering if its possible to have both jQuery _renderItem (for custom list item HTML/CSS) AND the categories working together in harmony? Ive got my _renderItem working great but I have no idea how to incorporate categories into the mix. • How to handle activity life cycle involving sockets in Android?

  Hello all, I have an Android activity which in turn starts a thread. In the thread I open a persistent TCP socket connection. When the socket connects to the server dynamic data is downloaded. The thread sends messages using Handler-class to the activity when data has been received. Now if the user happens to switch from portrait to landscape mode the activity gets an onDestroy call. At this moment I close the socket and stop the thread. When Android has switched landscape mode it calls onCreate yet again and I have to do a socket re-connect. Also, all of the data the activity received needs to be downloaded once more because the server does not have the ability to know what has been sent before, i.e. there is no "resume" feature. Thus the problem is that there is alot of data which is resent all the time when landscape mode is changed. What are my options here? Should I create a service which handles the socket traffic towards the server thus I always got all the data which the server has sent in the service. Or should I disable landscape mode all together perhaps? Or would my best bet be to rewrite my server which is a VERY BIG job :-) All input is welcome :-) / Henrik

Is there an easy way to treat these classes, that I am just not aware of? To elaborate more on the use case: This is a scaled down version of a data class used in remoting. So essentially it looks like this: FieldData data = new FieldData(); data.Value = 8; remoteObject.DoSomething(data); Note: I've omitted the ISerializable implementation for simplicity, but it is as you'd expect.

• Can I use the auto-generated Linq-to-SQL entity classes in 'disconnected' mode?

  Suppose I have an automatically-generated Employee class based on the Employees table in my database. Now suppose that I want to pass employee data to a ShowAges method that will print out name & age for a list of employees. I'll retrieve the data for a given set of employees via a linq query, which will return me a set of Employee instances. I can then pass the Employee instances to the ShowAges method, which can access the Name & Age fields to get the data it needs. However, because my Employees table has relationships with various other tables in my database, my Employee class also has a Department field, a Manager field, etc. that provide access to related records in those other tables. If the ShowAges method were to invoke any of those methods, this would cause lots more data to be fetched from the database, on-demand. I want to be sure that the ShowAges method only uses the data I have already fetched for it, but I really don't want to have to go to the trouble of defining a new class which replicates the Employee class but has fewer methods. (In my real-world scenario, the class would have to be considerably more complex than the Employee class described here; it would have several 'joined' classes that do need to be populated, and others that don't). Is there a way to 'switch off' or 'disconnect' the Employees instances so that an attempt to access any property or related object that's not already populated will raise an exception? If not, then I assume that since this must be a common requirement, there might be an already-established pattern for doing this sort of thing?

To me that seems rather slow as we're only talking about a million rows of data. What can I do to optimize the insert of this data? (already using disable keys) G-Man

  I have a script which creates a drag-and-drop uploader on the page from a div. My DIV will look something like <div class="well uploader" data-type="image" data-callback="product.addimage" data-multi="1"></div> Then I'll have a function something like var product = new function(){ /* Some random stuff */ this.addimage = function(image){ alert('W00T! I HAZ AN IMAGE!'); } /* More random stuff */ } When the upload is complete, I need to call the function in data-callback (In this example, product.addimage). I know with global functions you can just do window[callback]() but I'm not sure the best way to do this with functions under objects. My first thought was to do something like* var obj = window; var parts = callback.split('.'); for(part in parts){ obj = obj[parts[part]]; } obj(); but that seems a bit dirty, is there a better way without using eval because eval is evil? I haven't tested this so I have no idea if it will work

I added to fields position and company and deleted the field 'description.' A DataInputStream lets an application read primitive Java data types from an underlying input stream in a machine-independent way. The DataInputStream therefore extends FilterInputStream An ObjectInputStream deserializes primitive data and objects previously written using an ObjectOutputStream. However, for some reason the ObjectInputStream does NOT extend FilterInputStream even though it is also reading objects (this time and not primitive types) from the underlying input stream. Here is the branching of the concerned classes. Is there is a design reasoning for the same?

• How do you set the "global delimiter" in Excel using VBA?

  I've noticed that if I use the text-to-columns feature with comma as the delimiter, any comma-delimited data I paste into Excel after that will be automatically split into columns. This makes me think Excel must have some kind of global delimiter. If this is true, how would I set this global delimiter using Excel VBA? Is it possible to do this directly, or do I need to "trick" Excel by doing a text-to-columns on some junk data, then delete the data? My ultimate goal is to be able to paste in a bunch of data from different files using a macro, and have Excel automatically split it into columns according to the delimiter I set.

• Why is the latency on one LVM volume consistently higher?

  I've got a server with LVM over RAID1. One of the volumes has a consistently higher IO latency (as measured by the diskstats_latency munin plugin) than the other volumes from the same group. As you can see, the dark orange /root volume has consistently high IO latency. Actually ten times the average latency of the physical devices. It also has the highest Min and Max values. My main concern are not the peaks, which occur under high load, but the constant load on (semi-)idle. The server is running Debian Squeeze with the VServer kernel and has four VServer containers and one KVM guest. I'm looking for ways to fix - or at least understand - this situation. • JSON in an AJAX request

  I have a PHP API I'm working with that outputs everything as JSON. I need to call one of the API methods and parse it out using an AJAX request. I am using jQuery (though it shouldn't matter). When I make the request it errors out with a "parsererror" as the textStatus and a "Syntax Error: invalid label" when I make the request.   Hey guys. Im working on an assignment, where I want to design an AI for a mp3 player. The AI must be trained and designed with the use of a HMM method. The mp3 player shall have the functionality of adapting to its user, by analyzing incoming biological sensor data, and from this data the mp3 player will choose a genre for the next song. Given in the assignment is 14 samples of data: One sample consist of Heart Rate, Respiration, Skin Conductivity, Activity and finally the output genre. Below is the 14 samples of data, just for you to get an impression of what im talking about. Sample HR RSP SC Activity Genre S1 Medium Low High Low Rock S2 High Low Medium High Rock S3 High High Medium Low Classic S4 High Medium Low Medium Classic S5 Medium Medium Low Low Classic S6 Medium Low High High Rock S7 Medium High Medium Low Classic S8 High Medium High Low Rock S9 High High Low Low Classic S10 Medium Medium Medium Low Classic S11 Medium Medium High High Rock S12 Low Medium Medium High Classic S13 Medium High Low Low Classic S14 High Low Medium High Rock My time of work regarding HMM is quite low, so my question to you is if I got the right angle on the assignment. I have three different states for each sensor: Low, Medium, High. Two observations/output symbols: Rock, Classic In my own opinion I see my start probabilities as the weightened factors for either a Low, Medium or High state in the Heart Rate. So the ideal solution for the AI is that it will learn these 14 sets of samples. And when a users sensor input is received, the AI will compare the combination of states for all four sensors, with the already memorized samples. If there exist a matching combination, the AI will choose the genre, and if not it will choose a genre according to the weightened transition probabilities, while simultaniously updating the transition probabilities with the new data. Is this a right approach to take, or am I missing something ? Is there another way to determine the output probability (read about Maximum likelihood estimation by EM, but dont understand the concept)? Best regards, Casper
