• Authentication for SaaS

  What would be recommended as an authentication solution for a Software-as-a-service product? Specifically, my product would have clients that would typically have low information technology skills, potentially not even having an IT department within their organization. I would still like to have my application authenticate against their internal directory service (eDirectory, Active Directory, etc.). I don't want them, however, to have to open/forward ports (for instance, opening up port 636 so I can do LDAPS binds directly to their directory service). One idea I had was to have an application installed on a server within their organization's network that would backconnect to my service. This would be a persistant socket. When I need to authenticate a user, I send the credentials via the socket (encrypted) - the application then performs a bind/whatever to authenticate against the directory service and replies with OK/FAIL. What would you suggest? My goal here is to essentially have the client install an application within their network, with very little configuration or intervention.

• Subscribing to MSMQ over the internet

  I haven't been able to find a clear answer to this problem. Is there a good way to subscribe to a MSMQ through the internet? Ideally I need security both in authentication and encryption for this connection. But I would like the subscriber to act just like any other client that would be subscribed on the local network. I believe I have a couple of options here Expose the MSMQ ports publicly Put the MSMQ behind some type of WCF service (not sure if that works for a subscriber) What other options do I have? We're sitting in a .NET environment and the main problem domain that is trying to be solved is to change the remote connections from a pulling system to an event based system to reduce the load on the main server.

• How to suppress email validation when using SmtpClient and MailMessage

  When sending out emails using the SmtpClient and a MailMessage (.net 3.5) the "To" email address(es) get validated prior to sending. I've got a big stack of email addresses which have a dot (.) before the at-sign, causing a FormatException when you attempt to send the message using the SmtpClient. This is actually a good thing, because by specification a dot before the at-sign is invalid. Unfortunately, those emails exist in the real world and they get delivered, if you send them out using your preferred email client. My question is, can email validation through the SmtpClient/MailMessage be suppressed?

  writing a WCF soap server which is going to be working with a flex client. what the best way of passing the result of a sql select statement? with pro's and con's would be good :D I know I can define data contracts, however defining lots of these for every sql statment is going to take a long time. i'm doing this with SQL server 2000, VS2010 and flex sdk 3/4. apart form that there isn't really that many other requirements that couldn't be moved at present. • Verifying university membership/attendance via email address

  My client's web app allows members to sign up (Rails using AuthLogic) and those signups are limited in that they must be under the auspices of a university. To wit: A university organizer can sign up to be the representative of a university, and students can sign up as "attendees" of that university. I've been tasked with finding if there is a programmatic way to verify university membership/attendance. The only way I can see doing this is having a database of universities and a database of associated emails, and verifying that the student's email address is part of this database. That doesn't help if using Facebooker and AuthLogic's "sign up with Facebook credentials" ability, however. I suspect the answer to this is "via human intervention," and that this is something we can't solve programmatically. Either we, or the university, will have to bite the bullet and check records. However, I'd thought I'd ask if anyone else has run into the issue of verification of university membership before.

  Anyone using the following php S3 client library? http://undesigned.org.za/2007/10/22/amazon-s3-php-class It's been working fine for me for a few days, just noticed that a script I have in place now just ends up hanging. Running this through strace, I see something like: poll([{fd=4, events=POLLOUT}], 1, 1000) = 1 ([{fd=4, revents=POLLHUP}]) poll([{fd=4, events=POLLOUT}], 1, 0) = 1 ([{fd=4, revents=POLLHUP}]) poll([{fd=4, events=POLLOUT}], 1, 1000) = 1 ([{fd=4, revents=POLLHUP}]) poll([{fd=4, events=POLLOUT}], 1, 0) = 1 ([{fd=4, revents=POLLHUP}]) poll([{fd=4, events=POLLOUT}], 1, 1000) = 1 ([{fd=4, revents=POLLHUP}]) Looking at what's running, I see that it's not even getting to the point where it makes the curl call. • Can MYSQL filter by date if date is stored as text? ex "02/10/1984"

  Hello! I am trying to modify an app for a client which has already a database of over 1000 items. The dates are stored as text in the database with the format "02/10/1984". The system allows you to add and remove fields to the catalog dynamically and it also allows the advanced search to have specific fields be allowed. The problem is that it wasn't designed with dates in mind, so when I set a field as a date, and try to search by a range the query is trying to do a AND (cfv0.value = 01/02/2004 AND cfv0.value <= 05/03/2008) . I can make it so the date range passed is a numeric time value. Is there a way that when sending the query, it takes the text fields (with the date) and converts it to numeric time value so at that point I am basically just comparing numbers which would work fine. I do not have the option to change all the current date to numeric value due to the way the dynamic fields are set up. Thanks guys!

• how to prevent hacking of a WP site

  I have a WP install, and every few weeks some hackers keep adding some bunk script to the bottom of certain files, making the WP site not function. I've changed the user/pass to WP and this obviously isn't working. I'm thinking since they are effecting files that are not visible via the WP login files (which are just theme files) then does this mean they are getting access to the FTP and making their hacks there? If they are getting into FTP then why wouldn't they just remove all docs? Any insight would be greatly appreciate it. While I appreciate the billable hours to find/remove this code every few days the client isn't as excited about it as I am.

• Django, CSRF protection and js generated form

  I have to create a form dynamically via javascript (yeah, that sounds ugly, but read this for the reason) and wants to make its submission CSRF proof. Usually, I use the @csrf_protect decorator in my views, and the {% csrf_token %} tag in my templates, as recommanded in the doc. But what should I do with a client-side generated form ? If I add a '/get_token/' view to generate a token on the server and obtain its value (say, via JSONP), then that means that I'm creating a backdoor an attacker could use to bypass the protection. Kinda head-scratching. What would you recommand ?

  Hey, I am making a Client Server application for my Android phone. I have created a UDP Server in Python which sits and listens for connections. I can put either the server IP address in directly like 192.169.0.100 and it sends data fine. I can also put in 192.168.0.255 and it find the server on 192.169.0.100. Is it possible to get the broadcast address of the network my Android phone is connected to? I am only ever going to use this application on my Wifi network or other Wifi networks. Cheers

  I'm trying to learn WPF and was thinking about creating a simple IRC client. The most complicated part is to create the chat log. I want it to look more or less like the one in mIRC: or irssi: The important parts are that the text should be selectable, lines should wrap and it should be able to handle quite large logs. The alternatives that I can come up with are: StackPanel inside a ScrollViewer where each line is a row ListView, since that seems more suitable for dynamic content/data binding. Create an own control that does the rendering on its own. Is there any WPF guru out there that has some ideas on which direction to take and where to start?

  Hi folks, I'm having a major issue with an XSD dataset mapping thingy that I'm using within my current project. We are using XSDs for some data abstraction (it's quicker and debatably more maintainable that using Parameterised SQL or a StoredProc), and on my machine (running in the VS development environment) thy're working fine. However, on the Pre-production server we use for our testing, the XSDs are not working correctly: some method calls will fail with the following error: System.ArgumentException: Value does not fall within the expected range. at Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleParameter.set_DbType(DbType value) Has anyone ever encountered this issue before? The methods being called are simple select statements using 1-3 parameters, and as I said before they work fine on my machine.

  I am developing a progress bar using Ajax. My client side code is working fine, but I have issue at server side. I am using C based CGI. if(i == inc && pb_inc<=100) { fptr = fopen("progress_bar.txt", "w"); fprintf(fptr,"%d", j); fclose(fptr); pb_inc++; } basically I am increasing progress bar after certain number of bytes. What I see here is that the CGI doesn't let display any data to text file until it has sent all the data to file one by one. i have referred to http://www.redips.net/javascript/ajax-progress-bar/ Any idea whats happening here?

  Hi all, Right now i have an asp.net 2.0 app which allows a user to search by the following fields Location (Required if there is nothing in idnumber field) Address (Required if there is nothing in idnumber field) Zip (Required if there is nothing in idnumber field) **OR** IDNumber. (Required if there is nothing in any of the other fields) What i'd like to be able to do is validate this client side on button click and display a summary of errors. i.e. if a user leaves every criteria blank. I'd like to display "You must enter a IDNumber or "Location, Address, and Zip to continue" I've never used the Custom Validation control so here are some questions. 1) Is it able to do this? 2) Does anyone have an example of how to do this?   Hello, whats the best way of preventing someone from voting twice? How do i get the users ip address? What if they are on a large network? will everyone on that network show the same ip? thanks UPDATE: request.getRemoteAddr() and request.getRemoteHost() return the Server names, not the client's host name and ip. Anyone else got any bright ideas? Ok, so lets forget about the voting twice thing. Im just trying to get the users ip address? i tried request.getRemoteAddr() and request.getRemoteHost() and think im getting the servers address. I have access to two separate networks and am getting the same IP address :(

• SVN Mac oSX issue - permissions?

  Hello there, /Volumes/sites is a connection to a samba share that hosts some of our sites. We authorise using a username & password that is the same user/pass to log onto the mac. When committing, (or even doing a cleanup) from the Mac Client side using the svn command line tool or SCPlugin, this error occurs: Commit succeeded, but other errors follow: Error bumping revisions post-commit (details follow): In directory '/Volumes/sites/foobar/public_html' Error processing command 'committed' in '/Volumes/sites/foobar/public_html' Error replacing text-base of 'index.php' Can't move '/Volumes/sites/foobar/public_html/.svn/tmp/text-base/index.php.svn-base' to '/Volumes/sites/foobar/public_html/.svn/text-base/index.php.svn-base': Operation not permitted Any ideas? I think it's to do with permissions on the mac side not being able to move files around on the samba share. Apologies if my question is kinda vague so any extra information I can give please shout.   I have created a servlet which displays a form having some fields and a submit button and also created a web service having methods which are needed in my servlet. I have deployed the web service on Tomcat 5.5.9/Axis and servlet web application on Tomcat ( same instance of Tomcat) using eclipse. Since one is web service and other is web application both are running on separate instances of tomcat, so when i run them separately i.e servlet without the call to web service and a client that access that webservice it works fine but when i integrate them both i get a error like exception: javax.servlet.ServletException I would like to call the web service and return the result when i press the button Please advice me on how to implement that.

• Help replace this SQL cursor with better code

  Can anyone give me a hand improving the performance of this cursor logic from SQL 2000. It runs great in SQl2005 and SQL2008, but takes at least 20 minutes to run in SQL 2000. BTW, I would never choose to use a cursor, and I didn't write this code, just trying to get it to run faster. • How to attach multiple files to a Wordpress post?

  I'm currently working on a project where we are using Wordpress 3.0 RC. The idea is to create custom post types with meta boxes to make the system easier to use for the client. Some of these posts need to have multiple files attached to them, and by attached I do not mean inserted to post but rather we'd like to keep them separate from the post body (in fact, a given post type might not even have text, only files). I'm wondering if there is a standard approach for allowing multiple files to be attached to a Wordpress post? I've managed to add a meta box that allows one file from the media library to be selected, but I have no idea how to extend this to allow an arbitrary number of files. Hope someone can help!
