  • “Play Now” via website vs. download & install

    I've spent some time looking over the various threads here on GDSE and also on the regular Stackoverflow site, and while I saw a lot of posts and threads regarding various engines that could be used in game development, I haven't seen very much discussion regarding the various platforms that they can be used on. In particular, I'm talking about browser games vs. desktop games. I want to develop a simple 3D networked multiplayer game - roughly on the graphics level of Paper Mario and gameplay with roughly the same level of interaction as a hack & slash action/adventure game - and I'm having a hard time deciding what platform I want to target with it. I have some experience with using C++/Ogre3D and Python/Panda3D (and also some synchronized/networked programming), but I'm wondering if it's worth it to spend the extra time to learn another language and another engine/toolkit just so that the game can be played in a browser window (I'm looking at jMonkeyEngine right now). Is it worth it to go with engines that are less-mature, have less documentation, have fewer features, and smaller communities* just so that a (possibly?) larger audience can be reached? Does it make sense to even go with a web-environment for the kind of game that I want to make? Does anyone have any experiences with decisions like this? (* With the exception of Flash-based engines it seems like most of the other approaches have downsides when compared to what is available for desktop-based environments. I'd go with Flash, but I'm worried that Flash's 3D capabilities aren't mature enough right now to do what I want easily. There's also Unity3D, but I'm not sure how I feel about that at all. It seems highly polished, but requires a plugin to be downloaded for the game to be played -- at that rate I might as well have players download my game.) For simple & short games the Newgrounds approach (go to the site, click "play now", instant gratification) seems to work well. What about for more complex games? Is there a point where the complexity of a game is enough for people to say "OK, I'm going to download and play that"?

  • 11 ADF Mobile Apps in 30 Hours

    The Oracle ADF Mobile team took part in a special "hackathon" this weekend, where 11 teams of new college hires who joined Oracle lately spent 30 hours building enterprise mobile applications leveraging ADF Mobile. One important thing to note - none of the participants worked with Oracle ADF Mobile before! In fact 90% of them didn't develop with ADF previously. All they had is a 2 hour training session before the event - and that's all they needed. From that point on they were able to build great cross device mobile applications. So what did they build? Here are some examples: A mileage expense tracking system: An ad campaign analysis system An expense report entry system Bug tracking system with data analysis: Carpooling social system: College Hiring system with CV scanning: Shipment management system for Farmers: Project time entry system: For sale post-it system (with item location): Conference event experience system with conference map and twitter feed integration: It was great to see how fast developers were able to learn and leverage ADF Mobile - and how creative the teams were.   • Where is Tor Browser opening Transmission from? How can I open the "same" Transmission?

    When I launch Tor-Browser, it first launches Vidalia, then a special version of Firefox bundled with the Tor Browser package. If I try to download a (legal!) torrent in the Tor Browser version of Firefox, it launches Transmission to do so. IF I launch Transmission from within the Tor Browser, it will remember my current torrents. This persists from one Tor Browser session to the next, including logouts, shutdowns, etc. If, however, I try to launch Transmission from its location (usr/bin/transmission-gtk), it starts Transmission "fresh" without remembering any torrents or other settings. I assume Transmission is somehow loading another version of itself for Firefox -- the one that remembers things -- that isn't somewhere I can find it. Only one transmission-gtk executable appears when I search my file system... the one in usr/bin. What's going on? How can I open Transmission and have it "remember" things without having to start a torrent on Tor-Browser first?

  • EVENT RECAP: Oracle Health Sciences Conference

    Monaco served as an intense location for this year's Oracle Health Sciences User Group conference.  It was a "Grand Prix" event with nearly 200 attendees from all over the world.  In a country famous for high performance race cars, luxury super yachts and lifestyles of the rich & famous, the conference was very Ellison-esque. I think the Superyachts were being paired with Exadata. The OSHUG staff were fantastic . Robin and Taylor (pictured left) from Drohan Management took care of all the details and were wonderful to get to know. I met with some real Oracle loyalists.  Stan Sachar,  I.T. Manager for Westat, and the Focus Group co-chair for Admin Configuration Mgmt (ACM).  Westat was an early adopter of Oracle Clinical for clinical trial projects with installations in 1997-98.  I had a chance to talk with Stan during the reception and he is an Oracle advocate and evangelist. He's invested in his career in using Oracle products. (Stan Sachar pictured right with Dick Wolnick from Oracle, on left) I also met with Mirco Becker from Grunenthal Gmbh.  He's been working with the Argus product for over 6 years.  He's a big user of Oracle Support. Mirco attended my support best practices session and was actively engaged and asked several questions.  He's excited to adopt those best practices and work more efficiently and effectively with Support. Finally, I thank the many who attended my session.  I admit, the beautiful weather and view of the ocean was a distraction, but nonetheless my mission was to provide you with all the necessary support resources for Health Sciences users.   • Free ADF Training Event in the UK

    At the UKOUG conference back in December, at the Tools Roundtable session someone told me that they hadn't chosen Oracle ADF as their development environement for their future projects.  When I asked why, the response I got was "no one told us about it".  I was pretty astounded (even gobsmacked!) that the technology that is the foundation of Oracle's future applications strategy wasn't on someone's radar. There and then I promised the audience that if the UKOUG was to fill a room, I would deliver a full day of free training on Oracle ADF and JDeveloper. And here it is!  On the 11th May 2011 at the UK Oracle office in Reading I will deliver a day packed from start to finish with all the best bits of Oracle ADF and JDeveloper.  I'll build an application from start to finish, business services, validation, web services, UI, page flow, maps, graphs and show you tips and techniques.  The event in primarily focused on those who are new to JDeveloper and Oracle ADF and is aimed at getting you up to speed as quickly as possible (so others don't make the mistake of not choosing ADF ;o) ).   • OOW 2012: Kings of Leon & Pearl Jam - Appreciation Event

    June 15, 1992 - that was actually the day when Pearl Jam played their first concert in Serenadenhof in my hometown, Nürnberg. Oups ... that's over 20 years ago ... So I was so happy to get a ticket to this year's OOW 2012 appreciation event on Treasure Island. Every year it amazes me over and over again how the organizers manage it logistically to bring almost 40,000 people to and back from the island. Food was ... I would say fairly ok ... and beer (as always) is not - actually even though I'm not a beer drinker I wouldn't call it beer.  Kings of Leon did start. I like them a lot and owe their 2008 album Only By Night. That was a good start to warm up the crowd. And then Pearl Jam took over - and ... wooooooow ... they are such a great live band. First of all as far as I understood they were donating the money they've got for that gig to an NGO. And Eddie Vedder's voice is simply striking ... I had shivers running down my spine. They played a good excerpt of their +20 years career closing down with Alive at the very end. It seemed to everybody that the band had real fun playing there - and it was sooooo good. Thanks a lot to the person who did organize me a ticket Catching my bus back to my hotel area down at Fisherman's Wharf worked well - but I must have fallen asleep 5 minutes after we've left the parking lot. The next thing I did recognize was the bus driver pushing the breaks at Northpoint. What a wonderful night ...

  • How to? Adsense "Report Issue" with highlight / blackout / screenshot

    Have you submitted a feedback in AdSense using their "Report issue" tool recently? Without having to accept any plugin permissions, from my browser (Firefox on Ubuntu) it took a screenshot of the page I was on, and allowed me to highlight important parts of the page / blackout personal data. Please help me figure out how to develop this. I think any website that seeks development feedback could utilize this. P.S. Also help me figure out proper tags
