• Doesn't boot after installing fglrx for ati 5650

  Hi, I'm a complete noob here, I recently bought an HP 3161 with an ATI 5650 hd card, when I installed 10.04 LTS everything was working fine until I was prompted to activate proprietary driver fglrx, after I did this I couldn't reboot (not even in recovery mode) until I reinstalled 10.04, what can I do? I would appreciate any help since I haven't been able to find anyone with the same problem, thanks.

• Is there a driver like this for Windows XP too?

  In Ubuntu, there is a modified non-proprietary Nvidia driver preinstalled. This driver helps me get the full native resolution (1920x1020) of my flatscreen displayed without errors, while my Graphics Card (Geforce FX 5200) only supports DVI-resolutions up to 1440x900. This is a very cool thing. My question is: Is there such a kind of driver also for Windows XP? I've already tried the omega drivers, but 1920x1020 looks awful on Windows.

  I am going to be purchasing a new laptop soon, and have several models in mind at the moment. The really difficult part has been trying to determine whether or not Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics will meet my needs/desires (Unity 3D, use of Netflix via a virtualbox installation of Windows 7, and possibly Compiz effects) or if I should opt for one of the models with a dedicated GPU. So basically, what are the capabilities of the Intel HD 3000, and are they up to snuff?

• Ubuntu 12.04 video issue on Dell Inspiron 1100

  I have an old clunker - Dell Inspiron 1100 with A32 BIOS. I managed to install correctly from a USB drive, and the screen showed graphics in full natice 1024 x 768 - as did the 'try from USB' Ubuntu option. Once I committed to a full install on the HDD, the video resolution comes up as 640 x 480 with no other resolutions to change to full screen. Does anyone have some advice to allow the full LCD panel to be used? Thanks for reading Ed

I know, I know yet another NVIDIA question. So I did all the research. I uninstalled and installed nvidia-settings and drivers and nvidia-current from PPE repositories which are the most updated ones. I executed nvidia-xconfig. I have two major problems. One: Additional Drivers setting is empty! It doesn't contain any driver although one is installed. I have executed apt-get update too. But still the list is empty. Two: If I execute nvidia-xconfig it will properly configure an xorg.conf file. I restart but the maximum resolution I got is 640x480. I tried the xrandr but I can't add any resolution to display LVDS1. Some weird error occurs. So I can't add a proprietary driver and I can't boot in with the xorg file created by Nvidia... What can I do? With some work ( unistall nvidia-current and install libgl1-mesa-glx I was able to activate some kind of usage of my card because the resolution got better... and I added bumbelbee to because I have multiple video cards... ) but still the list is empty. I don't know what to do at this point??!!! Also: this is the most important part. When I first installed my ubuntu yesterday 11.10 one I saw the driver!! The driver was there... And then I ofc updated every package from internet.. And after that it was gone. And I can't bring it back. So there must be something wrong with one of the updates. But which???? Thanks for any extra info you can provide! I'm really desperate to solve this issue.

• Graphic crash after Ubuntu 12.04 minor update

  My problem came after doing a normal packages update in 12.04 and then reboot to never been able to boot normally, it appear the "The system is running in low-graphics mode" window and then I tried to fix the problem reinstalling the gmd. Now I'm reinstalling the whole system, from the USB boot it went everything as usual before that update. I just want to never have to reinstall Ubuntu in this way again. Any thoughts? I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on an Acer Aspire One D255

• java.awt -- when java outputs an image to my monitor (screen), where is the file that is output to the monitor card?

  Suppose that I am drawing a set of images using java graphics objects. Suppose that I java is outputting these images to my monitor. Where is the file or files that are sent to the monitor card (the graphical representation files). How can I take this file and save it to disk, or how can I take this file and write it to an array, or how can I take these files and combine the results of their output (to the monitor) into a single file for saving? I don't want to use a screen shot feature, I want to be able to redirect (xor capture also) the output to the monitor to some sort of byte-stream. I note that monitors are much better than semaphores, when you are talking about display capabilities; I don't need a counter example. I might not be asking the correct question. It might be that I want to capture the file while it is still in User Space, before it is put into 'Device Space'. I would like to try and capture the byte stream so that I can convert it to MPEG-4 format. I either need a streaming output from the MPEG-4 converter, coming from the streaming input, or else, I need to take static images at discrete times and convert the images. What format will the output from User Space be in? What format will the Device Space output be in?   I have an old Dell Inspirion 3000 which came with Windows XP. It's still quite decent, 3 GHz P4, 2 GB RAM. I've installed windows 7 RTM (x86) & the best resolution it will do is 640x480 with a generic driver. It has an integrated Intel 8265G graphics card, and only PCI slots on the motherboard. I cannot stick another graphics card on it. Can I get a working driver for Windows 7? Official Dell website only lists XP drivers Am I destined to have the suckiness of XP on this computer forever?

  We are looking for a way to plug a SD card into a PCI slot without going through a USB interface. We want to read the SD card's serial number directly and issue SD commands. The Chumby and the Google Android G1 phones both have SD slots that you can read from Linux without going through USB, but the Chumby only has a single SD card that's used for booting, and the G1 doesn't have any other reasonable storage if you use the SD card for that purpose. I'd really like a desktop with a few SD slots that are directly accessible. Anybody know of anything??

  I just purchased an Asus VG248 monitor (supports 144Hz refresh rate) and I can not increase the monitor's refresh rate beyond 60Hz from Windows. My system setup: 2x AMD 6990 graphics cards 1x Asus VG236 connected via DVI cable to graphics card #1 DVI port #1 (120Hz) 1x Asus VG248 connected via DVI cable to graphics card #1 DVI port #2 (60Hz) Does anyone know why I can not set the new monitor to a higher refresh rate?

  Possible Duplicate: Please insert a disk into SD/MMC - Vista problem Hi I tried pushing my 2GB micro SD card using the inbuilt card reader. On clicking the drive I get "Please insert a disk into SD/MMC". This problem is really frustrating. The card works fine on other computers so does the microSD to SD attachment. I have done following o fix. - Updated Vista and installed SP1. - Updated the TI drivers for FlashDrive. - Checked Vaio site for updates (none required). - Added a new entry HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlS* et001\Services\tifm21\Parameters/SDParam=1 took the hint from (http://tinyurl.com/nk33tp) I have restarted the PC multiple times. As soon as I put the card in, the SD/MMC device icon blips, so it seems the hardware is at least detecting something. The card reader was working fine few days back. I guess some windows update has broken something, does any one have any idea on how to proceed. MY laptop is VGN-N365E.

• How can I debug user mode driver failures in Windows 8

  I have a 32 GB SD Card. Whenever I insert this card in to my newly upgraded Windows 8 laptop the OS stops responding normally. Metro Apps won't work. The system may or may not log in. Desktop apps may or may not be able to do things. When I remove the card and restart then all is fine. As soon as I put the card back in, the system starts misbehaving again. I've run Windows Update, so I have the latest drivers from Microsoft. This does not occur with the 8 GB cards I have. Unfortunately I only have one 32 GB card, so I can't test with others. From examining the system event log I've determined this is happening due to a user mode driver failure. How can I best debug this issue from here? How can I figure out which driver this is related to? Will there be a Dr. Watson crash dump somewhere?   I formatted the drive and re-installed Windows 7 64-bit on a Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5232. Now I am missing the graphics accelerator. I have been to Toshiba's website but cannot find the right one. Same is so for AMD. It has AMD E1-1200 APU with Radeon HD Graphics. The machine is recognizing a standard VGA. I ordered a recovery disk on eBay and it was supposed to be here yesterday. Can anyone help with other options?

  I am trying to go for a 3 monitor setup on my workstation, but need some information before I can invest in a new graphics card and 2 monitors. Would be glad to get some help here: I have a Dell Precision 490 workstation with Nvidia Quadro FX 4500 graphics card (PCI-E 16) on it. It has 2 DVI-D ports that can support 2 monitors upto 2560x1600 resolution. For the third monitor, I was looking at Nvidia NVS 295 card, however I am not sure if it is physically possible to hook another card to the motherboard.   I have planned to buy a graphics card. When searching for a particular chipset (e.g. GTX 460) I find cards of different vendors (i.e. Gigabyte, Palit, PNY, ...). I can figure out differences in frequency, memory, and equipment. When I read test reports, usually a particular NVIDIA card is compared with its ATI/AMD "counterpart" - have not really found a comparison of all vendors for a particular NVIDIA chipset. So in order to make a decision: a) Are the drivers all the same for all the cards of a particular chipset (and provided by NVIDIA or the vendor?) b) How to figure out which card actually to buy. OK, I choose chipset, and memory, and check the card has the required ports, but then ....

  My machine has a Mobile Intel® GMA 4500MHD integrated graphics chipset. The machine is currently running 64 bit windows 7 premium with 3GB of ram (1x1gb and 1x2gb). I note that the Mobile Intel® GMA 4500MHD shares the physical memory to process the graphics. now, the total available graphics memory can be up to 1,340 MB with a 32-bit operating system and 3 GB system memory or 1,759 MB with a 64-bit operating system and 4 GB system memory. I am considering investing in a 4GB stick to replace the 1gb stick bringing the total up to 6gb, mainly for an increase in graphics processing ability. Can anyone let me know what sort of power (if any over the 4gb) I could expect by upgrading to 6GB?

• Building a PC for Work and play? [closed]

  Ok, Its been a long time since I build my own PC so I'm looking to get back into it again and build a new one. First off budget is about €800 excluding the monitor and windows 7 licence and mouse. (just bought a new g500) I plan on using my computer for work, lots of applications open at once but none particularly excessive (photoshop being the most demanding, mostly coding tools) I also use it for some gaming, e.g. COD, Starcraft etc. One thing I do want to do eventually is get a really good monitor with hight resolution and maybe 27" so the graphics card needs to be able to make best use of that. So a few questions 1) Is the bottle neck in performance mostly still the harddrives? 2) Aren't most processors e.g. i5 etc even i3 so far a head of other bottlenecks it makes litte difference the higher you go. Isn't the Graphics card dealing with heavy graphics so what really slows because of a slow CPU? So from this my thinking is to get a SSD drive as my primary drive for OS etc and have loads of memory e.g. 6-8GB and a decent mid level graphics card? It doesn't seem at my level worth spending much on CPU and any other parts really. I basic parts off the top of my head Case, Motherboard CPU SSD Drive SATA Drive Power Supply Memory Cooling (fan?) Graphics Card Network Card Keyboard DVD drive Mouse Windows Monitor Am I missing anything? Any helpful tips or general education much appreciated. Thanks, Derek

• Arch linux ati graphics crash after grub install

  Ok, so I've had an arch linux w/ gnome 3 installed for a while now. And a while ago I installed ubuntu as another partition, I think to fix an issue that cause arch to fail. So, it was all working fine, but then I went and reinstalled grub 1 on the arch partition; Ubuntu had overwritten it on the install. Then when I tried to boot into arch it booted, but the graphics wasn't working correctly: gdm wouldn't even show, and there were weird colors instead. So, I uninstalled xf86-video-ati and then installed xf86-video-vesa. That made gdm run in fallback mode and I was able to boot to gnome 3 fallback mode (or whatever it's called). But I can't seem to get the graphics working correctly.

  I am looking for something like a USB adapter for video cards. It is a cable that on one end hooks into a USB port on a computer and on the other accepts any one of a variety of video cards. Essentially it's an "all-in-one" USB adapter for video cards. I'm told that they are sold all over... does anyone know what it is called or where to find them? I should clarify, by the way, that by "video card" I mean a memory card for a video camera, and that the goal is to read this video data onto a computer, from a variety of video card types, through a USB port. That way if you go to your friend's house and bring your computer, you can transfer the video data on his video camera to your computer, trusting that the adapter will have a slot for his kind of video card.

  I've a fujitsu lifebook S7220, it's been a while since i try to configure it to use a dual head with centos 5.4 x86_64. Everytime I try, the xserver crash... • Radeon HD4850 serious issues when using DirectX 10

  Hello, I have a problem with my video card. Whenever I run a DirectX 10 game, it works for a few seconds (10 or so) and then starts displaying nothing but big polygons. I have tested this with Crysis and Resident Evil 5, both have the same problems. The same games running under DirectX 9 work fine, except for some small black squares once in a while. I have the following specs: Asus P7P55D LE Intel Core i5 750 Sapphire Radeon HD4850 1GB 2x2GB Patriot Viper II Sector 5, DDR3 1600 MHz OCZ Stealth X Stream 500SXS 500W At first I thought it could be the video card overheating (it has stock cooling), but the game crashes even when it's running at 50 degrees C, and it's never been higher than 70. I also thought it could be the PSU, but as far as I know 500W is enough for this computer, especially because I haven't overclocked anything. My OS is Windows 7 X64 and I am using Catalyst 10.10, but I have also tried many older versions with no success. I don't think there is a problem with the card itself, or else it wouldn't run DirectX 9 games I believe. I have spent many hours searching for a solution but I couldn't, so any help is appreciated. Thank you. EDIT: I did some further investigation about the problem, and it seems taspeotis was right, it might be related to memory. I slightly underclocked the memory from 993 to 965 MHz and the problem went away completely. Both the black squares using DirectX 9 and the weird polygons using DirectX 10. I was using RE DirectX 10 Benchmark, as it consistently crashed around the same point, and now I can play the full benchmark with no artifacts at all. Unfortunately, the underclock has an obvious hit in performance. Although it's not critical, it's definitely noticeable. So, if the video memory test software showed no erros, but the card needs an underclock to work, what might be the problem? Temperature? Voltage? By the way, I couldn't find what the default voltage for this card is. And what is a good software to try and increase it? I tried Ati Tray Tools but it has a bug that increases the clock speed dramatically whenever I change something in the Overclock tab, so I'm afraid it might fry my card. Worst case scenario, if I don't find I solution I will try to slightly increase the GPU clock to compensate for the memory clock. Thank you again.
