• NHibernate: Can I access a generated primary key after saving a model?

  Howdy, So I've got a simple table with an ID field that's incrementally generated on INSERT. I've set the mapping up in NHibernate to reflect this: <id name="ID"> <generator class="identity" /> </id> And it all works fine. Trouble is, I need to get the generated ID after I've saved a new model to use elsewhere: var model = new MyModel(); session.SaveOrUpdate(model); But at this stage model.ID == null, not the ID. Any ideas? Anthony

  I am learning JPA and have confusion in the @SequenceGenerator annotation. Upto my understanding, it automatically assigns a value to numeric identity fields/properties of an entity. Q1. Does this sequence generator make use of the database's increasing numeric value generating capability or generates the number on his own? Q2. If JPA uses database auto increement feauture, then will it work with datastores that don't have auto increement feature? Q3. If JPA generate numeric value on his own, then how the JPA implementation knows which value to generate next? Does it consult with the database first to see what value was stored last so as to generate the value (last + 1). ====================================================================================== Q4. Please also throw some light on sequenceName and allocationSize properties of @SequenceGenerator annotation.

• Inheritance in tables - structure problem

  I have 3 types of users in my system. each type has different information I created the following tables: BaseUser(base_user_id, username, password, additional common data) base_user_id is PK and Identity UserType1(user_id, data related to type1 only) user_id is PK and FK to base_user_id UserType2(user_id, data related to type2 only) user_id is PK and FK to base_user_id UserType3(user_id, data related to type3 only) user_id is PK and FK to base_user_id Now I have relation from each type of user to warehouses table. Users from type1 and type2 should have only warehouse_id and users from type3 should have warehouse_id and customer_id. I thought about this structure: WarehouseOfUser(base_user_id,warehouse_id) base_user_id is FK to base_user_id in BaseUser WarehouseOfTyp3User(base_user_id,warehouse_id, customer_id) base_user_id is FK to base_user_id in BaseUser The problem is that such structure allows 2 things I want to prevent: 1. add to WarehouseOfTyp3User data of user from type2 or type1. 2. add to WarehouseOfUser data of user from type3. what is the best structure for such case?

  Using Play! framework and it's JPASupport class I have run into a problem with a legacy database. I have the following class: @Entity @Table(name="product_catalog") public class ProductCatalog extends JPASupport { @Id @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.IDENTITY) public Integer product_catalog; @OneToOne @JoinColumn(name="upper_catalog") public ProductCatalog upper_catalog; public String name; } Some product catalogs don't have an upper catalog, and this is referenced as 0 in a legacy database. If I supply the upper_catalog as NULL, then expectedly JPA inserts a NULL value to that database column. How could I force the null values to be 0 when writing to the database and the other way around when reading from the database?

  I have problems with saving derived type (TPT) with Entity Framework to database. Let's say I have base entity Animal and derived type Dog. I want to save Dog entity. I thought that I could do it like contex.AddToDogs(), but contex contain only base entity - Animal. So I can only save Animal object - contex.AddToAnimals(). I have also tried with contex.AddObject("Animals", dogInstance), but I get the following error: The member with identity 'NavigationProperty' does not exist in the metadata collection. But I have add EntityReference to the "NavigationProperty". So how to save derived type in EF?

• SQL 2008 GUID column is all 0's

  I'm hoping this is a simple goof I did on my end ... I have a table in my database set up like so: column name: widget_guid data type: uniqueidentifier allow nulls: false default value: newid() identity: false row guid: true When records are created (via LINQ to SQL) that the values in this field are formatted as a GUID but contain all 0's My assumption was that when a new record was created, that a guid would be autogenerated for that column, much like an auto-incrementing row id. Is this not true? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have no problem doing this with one row which involves the use of IDENT_CURRENT but I have no idea how to do this set based (i.e. enter several rows into both tables). Thanks.   Hi I am not sure that I understand Isolated storage. I read the article http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/3ak841sy%28VS.80%29.aspx 1) Why I don't just use App data folder? 2) In the link above : "With isolated storage, data is always isolated by user and by assembly. Credentials such as the origin or the strong name of the assembly determine assembly identity. Data can also be isolated by application domain, using similar credentials." I can't think about a scenario that makes this future important. In general I don't understand the philosophy and the need of "isolated storage" which inspire MS to create such a thing. Thanks

I have a table and one of its column is referring to another column in another table (in the same database) as foreign key, here is the related SQL statement, in more details, column [AnotherID] in table [Foo] refers to another table [Goo]'s column [GID] as foreign key. [GID] is primary key and clustered index on table [Goo]. My question is, in this way, if I do not create index on [AnotherID] column on [Foo] explicitly, will there be an index created automatically for [AnotherID] column on [Foo] -- because its foreign key reference column [GID] on table [Goo] already has primary clustered key index? • How to retrieve Google Appengine Objects by id (Long value) ?

  Hi, i have declared an entity the following way: public class MyEntity { @PrimaryKey @Persistent(valueStrategy = IdGeneratorStrategy.IDENTITY) private Long id; @Persistent private String text; //getters and setters } Now I want to retrieve the objects using the id. I tried to manage it from the Google Appengine Data Viewer with "SELECT * FROM MyEntity Where id = 382005" or via a query in a servlet. I get no results returned. But i know for sure that the object with the id exists (i made a jsp which queries all objects in the db and displays them in the db). So what is wrong in my query? Am I querying the wrong field? The Google Appengine Data Viewer names the field "ID/name" and it has the value "id=382005". Do I have to query with this names? I've tried but it didn't work out :(

  Curious what recommendations anyone has. I have an existing asp.net forms application that does a Forms Authentication and has identity impersonate turned on. The application has a link to a questionnaire that I would like to develop separately in an asp.net MVC application, but I don't want the users to click on the link and be prompted for a username and password, I would like them to be able seamless start filling out the questionnaire. Is there a way to somehow transfer authentication from one .net app to another? I would like to be able to pass stuff like UserRole. What's the best way to do this?

• Random select is not always returning a single row.

  The intention of following (simplified) code fragment is to return one random row. Unfortunatly, when we run this fragment in the query analyzer, it returns between zero and three results. As our input table consists of exactly 5 rows with unique ID's and as we perform a select on this table where ID equals a random number, we are stumped that there would ever be more than one row returned. Note: among other things, we already tried casting the checksum result to an integer with no avail.   I scripted the tables in my dev database using SQL 2008 - generate scripts option (Datbase-right click-Tasks-Generate Scripts) and ran it on the staging database, but the script throws the below error for each table Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 1 Incorrect syntax near '('.   I have two entities(actually more but it doenst matter) Exam and Exam_Normals Its a oneToMany relationship... The problem is that i need a primary key for Exams_Normals PK (Exam_ID Item) Item should be 1 2 3 4 5 etc.... But cant achieve it getting errors An alternative would be to: I cound use an IDENTITY and a ManyToOne relationship at Exam_Normals but that should be like PK(Exam_Normals_ID) and a reference to Exam and an extra collumn Item to keep an order.. SO 3 collumns But to avoid the alternative tried I tried with @IdClass and got errors Tried @EmbeddedID everything nothing works Any idea??

I am wondering why even a single delete statement of this store procedure will cause deadlock if executed by multiple threads at the same time? For the delete statement, Param1 is a column of table FooTable, Param1 is a foreign key of another table (refers to another primary key clustered index column of the other table). There is no index on Param1 itself for table FooTable.   Is there a way to duplicate a db record with linq to sql in c#? Id [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY, [Foo] [nvarchar](255) NOT NULL, [Bar] [numeric](28,12) NOT NULL, ... Given the table above, I would like to duplicate a record (but give it a different id), in a way that new fields added to the DB and the Linq dbml file at a later date will still get duplicated with out having to change that code that duplicates the record. ie I don't want to write newRecord.Foo = currentRecord.Foo; for all of the fields on the table.

So each comment may have a parent comment etc. Given table "Comments": CommentId - int - identity autoincrement PostId - int ParentId - int Comment - string Is there a way to get a list of comments for a given article ordered by CreateDate and ParentId? Or maybe there is a better table design you may suggest. What is the best design when inserting Post comments like this? I'm using Entity framework. thanks

  I need little help with transferring data from variables, arrays, lists to my SQL Server. Im not bad in SQL, but im not familiar with DataSet, DataTable objects. My data is now stored in list of strings (List). Every string in that list looks similar to this: QWERTY,19920604,0.91,0.35,0.34,0.35,343840 There are about 900000 rows like this. Target datatypes in SQL Server: BIGINT (primary key, im not inserting it, its identity(1,1)) VARCHAR(10), DATE, DECIMAL(10,2), DECIMAL(10,2), DECIMAL(10,2), DECIMAL(10,2), INT How to convert that data to SQL Server data types? How to insert that data into SQL Server? Also i need some progress bar updates between inserts. I could do this using old-fashion SQL command, but i have learn more modern way :)

  Hey, what i want to do is to make a int that will be the ID of the entity and auto increment itself whenever a new entity is added (just like a SQL identity property). Is this possible? i tried using indexed (checked on attribute) however there is no description to what indexed even does. EDIT: I am adding annotations to a map, when you click the pin the annotationview with a chevron shows up. Now when you click this button i would like to load an associated picture. However the only way i know how to link the picture to this button is to give the picture a unique id, and then set the button.tag to this id and then load based on the button.tag.
