Are there any arguments that can make a contractor reconsider working on fixed price ?

I've been working for a contractor who brings in some good projects, but they are all fixed-price and often fixed-time. As a result he always has me making a quote over loose requirements, which never fails to bring a lot of tension due to feature creep. He claims he'd never get a contract if he couldn't agree on a price with his clients first, but as far as I'm concerned I don't wanna go through another project under these terms. Is there any argument I could make to have him pay me by the hour, or should I just suck less at estimating ?

What workflow engines are companies using and would you use it again? [on hold]

I've been asked to find out "what's out there" when it comes to workflow engines. We have projects where a workflow based development environment makes sense. I've looked a little into jBPM but it seemed to have a steep learning curve. Google seems to take me to commercial products or products that I think are open source but instead have very limited "community editions". I could simply be searching for the wrong terms. What I would like to know are what actual workflow based products have you used at your company and to what degree of success or failure was it? Would you use it again? Thanks.

client website compromised, found a strange .php file. any ideas?

I do support work for a web development company and I found a suspicious file today on the website of one of our clients called "hope.php" which contained several eval(gzuncompress(base64_decode('....'))) commands (which on a site like this, usually indicates that they've been hacked). Searching for the compromised site on google, we got a bunch of results which link to hope.php with various query strings that seem to generate different groups of seo terms like so: (the second result from the top is legitimate, all the rest are not) Here is the source of "hope.php": http://pastebin.com/7Ss4NjfA And here is the decoded version I got by replacing the eval()s with echo(): http://pastebin.com/m31Ys7q5 Any ideas where this came from or what it is doing? I've of course already removed the file from the server, but I've never seen code like this so I'm rather curious as to its origin. Where could I go to find more info about something like this?

For this period I have been working on my project- some sort of business network - and I did few small jobs, so right now I feel I am far behind in terms of my skills and the skills needed today. I lingered too long on Struts and Hibernate and thought that could the job for my project. I need to get a job, right now, so I am spending most of my time brushing my skills. How should compound words be handled when coding? Is there a definitive list of compound words? [closed]

QUESTION: How should you handle compound words when programming? Are there any good lists available online for developers of generally accepted technology-related compound words? I can see how this is highly ambiguous, so should I just use common-sense? EXAMPLE: I would be inclined to do this: filename NOT FileName or login NOT LogIn However, the microsoft documentation indicates that filename is not compound. Software bug/defect classification

We're trying to come up with terms that better describe our bugs/defects. To us, the term 'bug' or 'defect' is too generic and doesn't accurately reflect what is happening. For example, instead of saying that there is a bug (in the general sense), we'd rather say what type of bug (an error, or enhancement, or improvement, etc.). What names do you use for describing 'bugs'? We found http://www.softwaredevelopment.ca/bugs.shtml which has some pretty good classifications. How do you classify them?

Will this sitemap get me de indexed from Google?

My site's URL (web address) is: http://quantlabs.net/private/sitemap.xml Description (including timeline of any changes made): Will this sitemap get me de-indexed from Google? My new site map just got spidered by Google for some reason. It is located at http://quantlabs.net/private/sitemap.xml, is this in danger of getting me de-indexed from Google's index. Does it look like spam even though it is not meant to be? I am trying to figure the limitation in terms of Google's threshold before they deem it a spammy sitemap. This is sitemap contains automated postings which are different with the stock symbol provided. The amount of postings within the Sitemap are quite a few in a small amount of time.

I was wondering what is the general idea about code review and pair programming. I do have my own opinion but I'd like to hear from somebody else as well. Here are a few questions, please give me your opinion even on some of the point First of all are you aware of way to measure the effectiveness of this practices? sell applications that run only on a GPL v2 Server

I have been testing Pentaho BI server community edition, and after reading their licensing terms I found out that the community edition is under GPLv2. As you may know the server is intended to host different types of files and applications (like reports, olap cubes,etc...) My question is : are we allowed to sell applications that run on the GPLv2 server ? (we will maybe modify the server source code a bit but we won't charge it to our clients. thus the modified GPL server will be just an execution environment or a container for the reports and applications that we intend to sell) ? this suggests that our clients must install the GPL v2 edition first and then buy from us the reports that work on it but not their source code. I would like to write some rules for a game I have in head but I don't know how to do that. So are there some methodologies or modeling tools (like UML) to do that? I'm thinking about a kind of tree of competencies or some kind of map to be sure that the game is well balanced. I always wonder how the team who imagines some powers in magic the gathering for example does it. I am not happy with him and would like that once the website is ready, I transfer the duties of further development, seo and web admin to another developer. What is the general definition of something that can be included or excluded?

When an application presents a user with a list of items, it's pretty common that it permits the user to filter the items. Often a 'filter' feature is implemented as a set of include or exclude rules. For example: include all emails from [email protected], and exclude those emails without attachments I've seen this include/exclude pattern often; for example Maven and Google Analytics filter things this way. But now that I'm implementing something like this myself, I don't know what to call something that could be either included or excluded. In specific terms: If I have a database table of filter rules, each of which either includes or excludes matching items, what is an appropriate name of the field that stores include or exclude? When displaying a list of filters to a user, what is a good way to label the include or exclude value? (as a bonus, can anyone recommend a good implementation of this kind of filtering for inspiration?)

Is there any way to get faster app reviews?

I am trying to build a business around an iPhone app. The app will be our main sales channel, and being able to adapt the sales channel faster than the 9-10 days delay cause by the app review times is crucial. Therefore, I was wondering whether there is anything I can do to improve the speed of reviews. I am thinking that the publishers of Angry Birds, surely would not have to wait in line for reviews on the same terms as some obscure free app. So what can I do? Some things I am considering: Would Apple prioritize apps that they earn money on? Could I in some way pay Apple directly? I already know of the possibility of requesting an expedite review, but it seems like one can get punished for supplying a non-technical reason.

Coherence Query Performance in Large Clusters

Large clusters (measured in terms of the number of storage-enabled members participating in the largest cache services) may introduce challenges when issuing queries. There is no particular cluster size threshold for this, rather a gradually increasing tendency for issues to arise. The most obvious challenges are that a client's perceived query latency will be determined by the slowest responder (more likely to be a factor in larger clusters) as well as the fact that adding additional cache servers will not increase query throughput if the query processing is not compute-bound (which would generally be the case for most indexed queries). If the data set can take advantage of the partition affinity features of Coherence, then the application can use a PartitionedFilter to target a query to a single server (using partition affinity to ensure that all data is in a single partition). If this can not be done, then avoiding an excessive number of cache server JVMs will help, as will ensuring that each cache server has sufficient CPU resources available and is also properly configured to minimize GC pauses (the most common cause of a slow-responding cache server).

Windows 8.1 Ubuntu will not run after restart

I have been searching the internet forever now, but I am using wubi on a windows 8.1 laptop. I have properly burned the newest version of Ubuntu, I have never done this before, so please put the answer in simple terms. When I open wubi it comes up with these options: -reboot now -manually reboot later I put reboot now, and it reboots with no changes or differences to my operating system. The installer does not pop up upon rebooting and I have no idea what to try. I am a totally newbie at this. Please help me. I am using an Asus computer.

What is MVC, really?

As a serious programmer, how do you answer the question What is MVC? In my mind, MVC is sort of a nebulous topic — and because of that, if your audience is a learner, then you're free to describe it in general terms that are unlikely to be controversial. However, if you are speaking to a knowledgeable audience, especially an interviewer, I have a hard time thinking of a direction to take that doesn't risk a reaction of "well that's not right!...". We all have different real-world experience, and I haven't truly met the same MVC implementation pattern twice. Specifically, there seem to be disagreements regarding strictness, component definition, separation of parts (what piece fits where), etc. So, how should I explain MVC in a way that is correct, concise, and uncontroversial?

Best practice, or generally best way to set up web-hosting server, permissions, etc. [closed]

Hi, I'm about to set up a server upon which a friend and I will be hosting web sites, and I'll be using Debian. I've set up a LAMP solution many times just to using for local testing purposes, but never for actual production use. I was wondering what are the best practices are in terms of setting the server up, in reference specifically to accessing the web root directory. A couple of the options I have seen: Set up a single user account on the server for us both to use and use a virtual host to point to the somewhere in the home directory, e.g. /home/webdev/www. Set each of us up a user account, and grant permissions in some way to /var/www (What would be the best way? Set up a new group?) I want to get this right when I first set this up as there won't be any going back for a while once our first site is up and running. Appreciate any guidance in advance.

Has an open console any chance to give more strength to the indie game world ?

I have heard about the GPX, but i don't really think the embedded market is mature enough in terms of performance, but what about the home console market ? I'm not talking about last-generation graphics, because that would be economically impossible, but what about an hardware as fast as a playstation 2/Xbox 1/Gamecube ? For games, the trick would be to ask some editors to recompile their best sellers for the new machine: those games being from the PSX age or even older console generations, I think this would have a very low cost job and they could still make some good profit, but I need to know if this is doable technically, considering the architecture which can be quite exotic. Do you think it would be a viable project to talk about to investors ?

Is there a correlation between complexity and reachability?

I've been studying cyclomatic complexity (McCabe) and reachability of software at uni recently. Today my lecturer said that there's no correlation between the two metrics, but is this really the case? I'd think there would definitely be some correlation, as less complex programs (from the scant few we've looked at) seem to have 'better' results in terms of reachability. Does anyone know of any attempt to look at the two metrics together, and if not, what would be a good place to find data on both complexity and reachability for a large(ish) number of programs? (As clarification, this isn't a homework question. Also, if I've put this in the wrong place, let me know.)
