• 4GB of RAM in MacOSX 10.5, only 3GB in MacOSX 10.6

  Hi, I was using MacOSX 10.5 on my MacBook until today and I had 4GB of memory there. Now I have updated to MacOSX 10.6 and it only displays 3GB. Why is that? How can I fix it? Also, I am a bit wondering why most people (well, most of the Google hits explained the 3GB issue that way -- leaving out the fact that it has worked earlier) are saying that a 32bit system can under no circumstances access more than 3.2GB. Don't we have PAE nowadays in most systems? Thanks, Albert

• How to blacklist a problem Wi-Fi access point by MAC address in Mac OS X

  So I am a small Mac-user cog in a larger Windows-based network machine. The network here works fine for most everyone else (on PCs), but I have random timeouts and issues with the Wi-Fi. Luckily, I have identified a few problem access points by MAC address (via their log messages in Console.app). Is it possible to tell my AirPort on my Macbook to avoid those access points, and only speak with the access points who are far less touchy about me drinking the Apple kool-aid? All of the points are on the same network SSID.

• Mac OS can't connect to SMB shares after sleep

  I used to access my local Windows 2008 file server's SMB shares on my recent (3 weeks old) MacBook Pro without problems. However, for a few days now, it fails to (re-)connect to the server after it woke up from sleep mode. Finder just shows "connecting..." and hangs indefinitely. The same thing happens when I try it from the command line (mount -t smbfs). This happens via both WiFi and cable, I also tried turning networking off and back on. The only thing that helps is a reboot. Any hints?

• Best 'Remember the milk' client for Windows XP

  I'm a user of RTM (Remember The Milk). Since I have Windows 7 at home, I'm using a Windows Sidebar gadget ('Forget the milk'). But as I'm using Win XP at office, I cannot use the gadget. I am looking for an RTM client for Windows XP. I have used a software running on Adobe AIR, which requires to go to the RTM site every time to add a job. Is there any other effective clients for XP which can at least: Add a task Delete a task without visiting the site every time.

  After playing PC games after a few hours I decided to take a break. When I opened up My Computer in Windows 7 I noticed I one of my drives had disappeared. Thinking it was just a glitch, I tried to restart. Upon restart, the BIOS took forever to get through (I didn't notice my disappeared hard drive in the listed drives) and the computer seemed stuck at the "Start Windows" screen. I hard shut down everything. Opened up the case, used canned air to clear the dust out and made sure all devices were snugly in place. I hooked everything up and powered on. This time, after a few seconds the computer restarted (nothing showed up on screen either). After its restart, the computer didn't do anything. The hard drive indicator light was on the whole time. • Text Expander broken upon Snow Leopard Upgrade

  I've been using Text Expander for years. However, I found out today it doesn't work on my newly upgraded (to Snow Leopard) Macbook Pro anymore. I know that there are a lot of applications that are not compatible with Snow Leopard, and developers around the world are working on them to work again on our beautiful macs. My questions are: 1. Is TextExpander supposed to NOT work on Snow Leopard? 2. What is a good substitution to replace TextExpander? or any updates from TextExpander developers?

• How does a hard drive compare to Flash memory working as a hard drive in terms of speed?

  Some experiment I did with hard drive read/write speed was 10MB/s write and 40MB/s read, and with a USB Flash drive, it can be 5MB/s write and 10MB/s read. Also, if I put a virtual hard drive .vhd file in a hard drive or in a USB Flash drive and try a Virtual Machine using it, the one using the hard drive is quite fast, while the one using the USB Flash drive is close to not usable. So I wonder some early netbooks use 4GB or 8GB flash memory as the hard drive, and even the Apple Mac Air has an option of using flash memory instead of a hard drive. But in those situation, will the speed be slower than using a hard drive, like in the case of a USB Flash drive?

• FontExplorer X + Dropbox

  I'm looking to sync my fonts between my Macbook and iMac using a combination of FontExplorer X and Dropbox. I've seen a few blog posts that confirm that it is possible by using a symbolic link on the database folder. But for some reason I can't seem to find that folder (I'm thinking it may have been changed/moved in the newer releases of FEX?) It in this line [Application Support/Linotype/Font Explorer/fontexplorer x.fexdb] But the Linotype no longer exists in Application Support. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

• Lost Internet access in Windows XP Mode virtual pc under Windows 7

  In my office, I created and configured a virtual pc in Windows XP Mode. Everything was working fine. Now I'm on the road, and my Internet access (in the host operation system) is either via a hotel wifi or through my Verizon air card. Either way, I've lost Internet access in the virtual pc. I went into the Virtual PC settings, and set the Networking value to Shared Networking (NAT). Actually, I've tried every combination I can find, but I can't get from the virtual pc to the web. I'm hoping to use the virtual box at a client site, so I really need that access. Is there anything I can do to get it back? Thanks for any help.

• Exchange 2007 ignoring Send Connectors (again)

  Wow, I'm at a loss here -- I posted this exact same question a while back and it's doing the exact same thing: my Send Connector I've created for "Microsoft Domains" (hotmail.com cost 1) is being ignored again and routed through the "Default" Send Connector (* cost 10). Last time, I had the same cost for both Send Connectors, but I've tried setting the Default connector to 5, 10, 100, etc. and regardless, all mail gets routed through that connector (which smarthosts through Postini). Besides calling an air strike on Redmond, what else can I do? MS is blocking Postini again, need to get this working permanently.

• Safari taking too long to load web-pages.

  I am running the latest and greatest Snow Leopard on a MacBook. I have started to notice that Safari is taking too long to open properly most of the web-pages I routinely visit. Safari would first sit at "Connecting ..." status, and then on "Waiting ..." status, taking a lot of time to load the page. In contrast, Firefox (and Opera), for example, is loading pages quickly. I am not using any proxy settings on either. I have emptied the cache on Safari; also re-set Safari completely, but all in vain. I am now stumped about what I should try to locate what the problem is, and if possible, fix it. Any help from the community here will be very much appreciated!

  The Finder column view preview pane and QuickLook stretch many of my photos. But when I open the same photos in Preview.app, they look normal. Screenshot: For example, download this image (reaver.jpg), and view it with Finder's column view. Now view it with QuickLook. It renders correctly in every other application, so there's something going wrong in how QuickLook/Finder get the image dimensions. This problem started happening in either Mac OS X 10.8.1 or 10.8.2.   For some time I've been interested in binding the Windows Key (Super_L) on my keyboard to Copy and Paste for no other reason but convenience and consistency between my desktop and my MacBook. I thought that I was close after reading about xmodmap and executing the following: $ # re-map Super_L to Mode_switch, the 3rd col in keymap table `xmodmap -pke` $ xmodmap -e "keycode 133 = Mode_switch" $ # map Mode_switch+c to copy $ xmodmap -e "keycode 54 = c C XF86_Copy C" $ # map Mode_switch+v to paste $ xmodmap -e "keycode 55 = v V XF86_Paste V" Unfortunately, XF86Copy and XF86Paste don't seem to work, at all. They are listed in /usr/include/X11/XF86keysym.h and xev shows that the key sequence is being interpreted by X as XF86Paste and XF86Copy, do these symbols actually work? Do they have to have application level support?

• Suggestions for a nice&small - high battery life programmer notebook

  Hi guys, I'm planning to buy a new notebook since the Toshiba I have now sucks in battery life. I'm a web designer & programmer, and the main features of the notebook should be: High battery life Small, 13.3" or 14" screen A fast processor and RAM that won't let me down while multi-tasking Anything other than these is secondary, I wouldn't like it to be very pricey though :) I'm now leaning towards Macbook Pro 13.3", 2.66 Ghz; it has 10 hours of battery life. However, I mostly develop on Windows, so I don't know how many hours of battery will I get if I run Windows 7 on Bootcamp. Your ideas and suggestions will be much appreciated.

• Rosetta Stone Network V3 doesn't recognize built-in microphone in OSX Lion

  I am using Rosetta Stone Network V3 on an early 2011 MacBook Pro running OSX Lion 10.7.3. When I log in, select a language and level, and then a lesson, I am prompted to select a microphone. The built in microphone doesn't show up, yet I've used it multiple times for other applications. I heard from another user that it doesn't work if headphones with a built-in microphone are used. I have not yet tried a USB microphone. Is there some free work around to this? I would prefer to not have to buy a USB microphone, but if that is the only solution, then I'll live. Edit: I noticed that Rosetta Stone tells me that if I don't have a microphone I should disable speech to move on, but that option is grayed out for me.

• Do all Mac OS X applications require Admin permissions to 'install'?

  I'm new to the whole Mac OS X operating system. I'm trying to learn and I've got myself a MacBook running Mac OS X 10.7.3. I've created a test user that can not administrate so that I can test out permissions and I've found that I can not do anything in the Applications folder, which includes 'installing' applications (even those drag 'n' drop ones) and creating folders, without entering an Admin name and password. However, I was under the impression that this wasn't the case and you only needed Admin permissions to write to somewhere like Preferences, so can somebody please clarify why it is asking for Admin when I try to drag 'n' drop applications into the Applications folder.

• Using VNC as a virtual KVM switch

  I'm wanting to control my laptop from my desktop. I've been doing this with VNC (PC desktop to Macbook pro) - but I want to remove the 'viewing' aspect of it on my desktop. I.e. I don't want to have the viewing screen on the desktop.. but be able to control the mouse/keyboard via VNC. Is this possible? • External Hard-Drive Randomly Ejects; Stays On

  My 250GB I/O Magic USB external hard-drive randomly disconnects / ejects from the computer after between 2-30 minutes of use. When this happens, the blinking activity light on the front of the hdd turns off; however, the disks can still be heard spinning. Unplugging & replugging in the USB does not reconnect the device and the activity light remains unlit. The only way to continue using it is to flip off then on the power switch of the hdd. The hard-drive was formatted with MBR partition table and 2 NTFS volumes. I recently tried switching to GUID with two Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but the problem remains. This error occurs with my new Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard as well as with my DELL E520 with Windows 7 Ultimate.

• Will increasing RAM improve Lightroom 3 large tiff loading times

  Set up: mid 2009 17" unibody MacBook Pro 4GB RAM 2.66 Core 2 Duo Snow Leopard 10.6.6 Lightroom 3 When working with 12 MegaPixel RAW files from a Nikon D700, no problem. Lightroom is fine. Recently I've been scanning film and they result in large tiff files, about 130mb each. The tiff files themselves are good, and I'm happy with my scanning workflow. Working with these files in Lightroom is perfectly fine, except for one step. When I choose one of these photos in the Develop module, Lightroom displays the "Loading" on the image for about a minute or two, which is quite long. Once the image is loaded, then everything is fine again, and applying effects is instant. So my only issue is reducing that "loading" time in the develop module (the library module is fine too). Will increasing my RAM to 8GB help? I'm worried about spending the money and it not making any difference. thanks andy

  I'm using the following httpd-vhosts.conf file to host several sites on my MacBook. Apache Configuration The first two virtual sites (v3.local,ss.local) are giving back the following error messages in the Apache error log: [Thu Aug 30 15:12:04 2012] [error] (61)Connection refused: proxy: HTTP: attempt to connect to [fe80::1]:3002 (localhost) failed [Thu Aug 30 15:12:04 2012] [error] ap_proxy_connect_backend disabling worker for (localhost)] The third site test.local works fine without any issues. I can't seem to find out why the first two sites are responding with the listed issue. What could be causing it and how can it be resolved?

• Are there any 5.1 surround audio switches on the market?

  (Somewhat related to this question) I have a set of Logitech 5.1 surround speakers, which use 3 stereo 3.5mm TRS connectors (minijacks) to transfer the audio (the typical green/black/orange audio outputs). I have a Griffin Firewave hooked up to my MacBook Pro, and my desktop has a Realtek ALC889 audio chipset. I have looked for a way to, essentially, switch the speaker inputs between my Firewave and my desktop without having to disconnect the cables from one, route them around my desk, and plug them into the other. I'd love to have something like an old Belkin DB-25/LPT switch, but for these audio cables. Of course, purchasing one and soldering my own cables on the connection terminals is always an option, but, is there a reasonably priced 5.1 audio switch (or 3x stereo) on the market that will accomplish the simple task of switching audio outputs between two computers into a set of 5.1 speakers? • I reinstalled OS X and the system was the same as before

  Strange thing happened. I want so sell my old Macbook and therefore used a disk image of the Snow Leopard DVD that I restored onto an external drive. I booted off the drive and went through the installation steps. Now I really would like to perform "archive and install", as there might be some files that I need later, but I didn't see the option. The only options for installation I had, were, including others, optional printer drivers and Rosetta. So I just clicked through and I wasn't given any other option. After about 45 minutes, my system booted again, and voila, there was my old system. Nothing changed. How should I proceed to actually reset the system? All I have is that Snow Leopard DVD image.
