• What constitutes proper use of threads in programming?

  I am tired of hearing people recommend that you should use only one thread per process, while many programs use up to 100 per process! take for example some common programs vb.net ide uses about 25 thread when not debugging System uses about 100 chrome uses about 19 Avira uses more than about 50 Any time I post a thread related question, I am reminded almost every time that I should not use more that one thread per process, and all the programs I mention above are ruining on my system with a single processor. • CSV files not being written

  I worked on a small project in which the data entered in HTML forms was saved in a CSV file which was used subsequently. The files were run on Apache2. It worked fine. After about 25 days, when I reopened the project, the data entered in forms was not saved in CSV file. I checked all the permissions. I even sent a zip file of my files to one of m friends. It worked well on his system. So should I figure it out there's some problem in the system. I am using Ubuntu 13.04. Kindly suggest me something so that I am able to figure out the problem.

• Target tracking with a small delay (actionscript 3.0)

  I'm having trouble thinking of a good method to track my character with an enemy attack. Of course, I don't want the attack to track my character's current position; I want it to track where the character was about 1 second before (so you can move around and make the attack miss and loop around you sort of a thing). The general structure of my game uses a timer to update all of my events. I have a timer going off every 25 milliseconds that updates everything, including my player's position and the enemies position. Right now I just have the enemy attack directly targeting my character....which works fine except that it's impossible to escape =p. Let me know if I didn't supply enough details. My approach was going to basically be get my character's position from about 1 second ago, then have the enemy target that position, the only problem is I can't think of a good way to get my character's position from previous times. • Victory rewards in digital CCG

  I am currently polishing a digital CCG where people can play against friend and random opponents in a classical Magic the Gathering-like duel CCG. I plan to award the players with 20 ingame currency units (lets call them gold) for each hour they are playing, 50 for each day they are playing and X for each victory. Now, the X is what I am trying to calculate here, since I would prefer keeping the currency to a certain value, but also with to entice the players to battle. I could go with a solid figure, say 25, for beating up an opponent. But that would result in experienced players only beating up newly started players, making the experience lame for both. I could also make a laddered tier, where you start at level 1, and raise in level as you defeat your opponents, where winning over a player awards you his level x 2 in gold. Which would you prefer if you were playing a game like this. There is no gold-based scoreboard, but the gold is used to purchase new cards along the way.

  I have a few websites on various niche topics, all running Adsense. The most promising one currently has a CPC that hovers around $1; the rest have CPCs of $0.25-$0.50. I'm curious to know what on-site factors affect CPC. That is to say, what I can do, legally (in white-hat compliance) to increase my CPC? • Boot-up hangs unless I manually select the kernel in the bootloader

  In my stock Ubuntu install (forgot which critter its named for, about one year old), I am able to boot up normally only if I manually select the kernel in the bootloader (Grub). If I step away and it boots from the default, the system will hang with the word "Ubuntu" on a graphics screen and a few white/red blinking dots beneath it. umb@digdug:~$ uname -a Linux digdug 2.6.32-42-generic #95-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 25 15:57:54 UTC 2012 i686 GNU/Linux Synaptics says I have 'grub-pc' version 1.98-1ubuntu-13 installed. My grub.cfg does have default="0" which I would expect to make the default be the first kernel shown in the selection screen. The system is a laptop with an i7 processor, and I have had trouble with some kernels not being able to boot at all in the past, and power management is not working perfectly, but I have not had problems booting the latest kernel (2.6.32-42) if I select it manually in Grub. Any idea what is going on here and how can I fix it so that I can re-boot unattended?

• Ubuntu boot is slower than Windows 7

  One of the reasons I installed Ubuntu (Wubi installer) was for a supposedly quick boot time. My boot time with Windows 7 is about 20-25 seconds, while my boot with Ubuntu is 30-40. I judged the boot times from the time after I selected the operating system on the initial selection menu and the grub menu, respectively. This is even after following all sorts of online guides to improve it. I've done driver profiling (and yes, I remembered to remove the "profile" edit in the grub file afterwards), I've cut a fair few startup programs out, and I've installed the preload package. But I'm still getting startup rates phenomenally slower than Windows 7. Any help here?

• Pagination and duplicate content

  I have an archive page that displays the number of articles published. Because there were so many, I ran a pagination script: for 127.0.0.1/archive/2/?p=x&pp=y where p is the page number and pp is number of articles to display per page. The pagination looks like this: Prev 1 2 3 4 ... 12 NEXT with each item linking to p like <a href="?p=x">x</a>. I also have the items per page setter: 25 | 50 | 100 (<a href="?pp=y">y</a>). Now I have a PHP script that fixes pp into a session variable. But I am worried about duplicate content (since incrementing pp values will be inclusive) and also content not getting indexed because its not in the pagination link. so in the example above, pages 5-11 will not be indexed. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I don't know python but Im familiar with C. This Drupal API calling is the only problem I have to successfully develop a lense. Please help!

  I worked over 5 years as C# software developer, but last time I often think, should I learn Java platform (especially Java EE)? On job sites I see that there are much more Java jobs than .NET (financial, corporate sector) and Java salaries 20-25% higher than C#. But on the opposite side I see that job count trend for C# is growing last 7 years, but Java job trend is nearly constant. Is this fact a sign that soon situation will change and C# job became more profitable? I will be grateful for any advice or your opinion! Thank you.

• Why doesn't 12.04 recognize my ATI Radeon X300SE graphics card?

  So far everything including the BCM4321 card is working, however, the OEM ATI Radeon X300SE (RV370) is not recognized. When I go into system details the card comes up as unknown. When I run lspci the card shows up as: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV370 5B60 [Radeon X300 (PCIE)] 01:00.1 Display controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV370 [Radeon X300SE] I have attempted check Additional Drivers but the card does not show up as needing a driver. So far this is causing the system to run warmer as the processor is doing a bit of the work to run Unity and any full screen videos tend to be rather choppy. Is there an available driver that will fix my issue and what is the install method? I am not scared to run a terminal so no worries there, as long as I have instructions, I can find my way. I am running under 12.04 LTS Kernel 3.2.0-25-generic-pae

• EFI - GPT dual-boot quantal AMD64 - impossible boot windows 7

  I tried to install Ubuntu Quantal AM64 on a EFI - GPT notebook (asus X501U) in dualboot. Ubuntu works fine, but i can't boot windows anymore. HDD is partitioned in this way: sda1 0.2 Gb boot efi sda2 0.128 Gb sda3 60 Gb Windows sda4 210 Gb Data sda5 15 Gb Ubuntu sda6 4 Gb swap sda7 25 Gb recovery image Booting pc, grub2 runs, but if i try to select "windows 7 loader on sda3" i receive this message: "error: invalid EFI file path." If i select "windows recovery Environment on sda7" i receive: "error: impossible find command "drivemap" - error: invalid EFI file path." I installed dualboot ubuntu many times, but this is the first time on a EFI - GPT system.
