• How best to merge/sort/page through tons of JSON arrays?

  Here's the scenario: Say you have millions of JSON documents stored as text files. Each JSON document is an array of "activity" objects, each of which contain a "created_datetime" attribute. What is the best way to merge/sort/filter/page through these activities via a web UI? For example, say we want to take a few thousand of the documents, merge them into a gigantic array, sort the array by the "created_datetime" attribute descending and then page through it 10 activities at a time. Also keep in mind that roughly 25% of these JSON documents are updated every day, and updates have to make it into the view within 5 minutes. My first thought is to parse all of the documents into an RDBMS table and then it would just be a simple query such as "select top 10 name, created_datetime from Activity where user_id=12345 order by created_datetime desc". Some have suggested I use NoSQL techniques such as hadoop or map/reduce instead. How exactly would this work? For more background, see: Why is NoSQL better for this scenario?

I set following value for coin striker body: Coin body: density = 20.0f; friction = 0.4f; restitution = 0.6f; Shape Circle with radius - 15/PTM_RATIO Striker body: density = 25.0f; friction = 0.6f; restitution = 0.3f; Shape Circle with radius - 15/PTM_RATIO Output is not smooth, when I apply ApplyLinearImpulse(force,position); Coin movement looks like floating in air....takes too much time to stop... Which value of coin and striker makes it look like real carom?

• Can't see YouTube videos in either Firefox or Chromium

  Dont' know why or if it is related, after upgrading Ubuntu 10.04 kernel ( I guess from 2.6.32-38 to -42) I can's see youtube videos. I checked the flash plug-ins installed and I have: (1) flashplugin-installer, (2) flashplugin-nonfree and (3) flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound. I haven't reinstalled the browsers yet.   I'm having an issue with calculating the predicted linear angle a projectile needs to move in to intersect a moving enemy ship for my 2D game.   I have an PerfectPrivacy VPN connected via the OpenVPN-Network-Manger-Plugin (Ubuntu 12.04.1) and I want to assign a system wide proxy over that VPN. I have tried proxydriver that should do that automatically, but it works partially. The browser says that I have the IP of the VPN, but when I tried to send an eMail over SMTP (Port 25), I can´t connect to the mail server. In our company the smtp server port is closed, but that should be not a problem, when I do that over a VPN, shouldn´t it? greetings

I found that I must write -pass n command some where, but where to write it I do not know. I tested this and wrote -pass 3 at the end but then the terminal just showed a > symbol.

  I wanted to ask your opinion on anti-depressants, since I took them daily for 3 years now, but I can't be sure if I'm less perfomant with them or without, since I never withdrawed. I'm still at school at the age of 25, still having some motivation problems (for example I can't get used to do something at school if I don't think it will teach me something), but I'm quite motivated to work in the video-game field, since I have some personnal projects in mind. I know C++ programming etc, I'm still learning techniques, but do you think I should try more to do my project instead of just following the work I'm assigned to ? Have you had experience with depression or anti-depressants ? How did it affect your work ? Do you think that being depressed or half-depressed can improve creativity ? • Static IP breaks Network connection

  I am somewhat new to Linux. I am setting up a Web server and installed Ubuntu server 14.04 on an vSphere ESXi 5.5 host. I am connecting perfectly fine to the internet when using DHCP but when I apply my Static settings I loose the ability to connect to websites. Whats weird is I can Ping google.com but if I try wget gooogl.com it hangs at connecting to google.com (google.com):173.194.43.32:80 and I get "failed: connection refused" But if I am set to DHCP the connection resolves perfectly. • Ubuntu 12.10 install freezes at configuring hardware

  I'm installing Ubuntu 12.10 (64 bit) from a bootable USB stick. At first I had trouble with a black screen after selecting 'install ubuntu'. I added nomodeset and xforcevesa to the options to fix that problem. Now when installing, it hangs at 'Configuring Hardware', specifically at ubuntu ubiquity: update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.5.0-17-generic Specs: Asus UX32a DB51 Intel Core i5 3317U 1.7 GHz 4GB DDR3 RAM intel hd 4000 graphics 500 GB harddrive with 25 GB sandisk ssd I'm trying to install Ubuntu by itself right now on the SSD. I made custom partitions (100 mb EFI boot partition, 4GB swap space, 20GB ext4 mounted on '/') I've tried re-downloading the ubuntu iso and creating a new boot image on my flash drive and it results in the same problem. • DHCP won't start / subnetting

  I recently changed the IP address on an Ubuntu 12.04 server I have in my lab, which is running isc-dhcp-server. After doing so and modifying the dhcpd.conf file, my dhcp service would not start. I basically used the same configuration, except I modified everything to use /25 scopes rather than /24. When I try to start / restart the service, I see the following: MY@ubuntuserver:~$ sudo service isc-dhcp-server restart stop: Unknown instance: isc-dhcp-server start/running, process 20918 It looks like it starts, but it isn't actually running and Webmin states that the DHCP service is not running. So my question is, does isc-dhcp-server support subnetting (CIDR) style scopes, or must they be class A / B / C scopes (doesn't seem likely)? I've double checked the interface reference (this is a VM with only one defined eth0 interface) and everything else I can thing of.

• Alps touchpad detected as a mouse, can't enable/disable multitouch

  Now I know that this has been asked several times here but I couldn't find any decent solution to it. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on my DELL N5110 and my touchpad is detected as a mouse, So I don't have the touchpad options availiable. Can't use multitouch and can't disable it either. I have tried the dkms driver from this link. But when I tried to install it with dpkg -i command, dpkg returns the following error: ERROR (dkms apport): unable to determine source package for psmouse-alps-dkms Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 3.2.0-25-generic-pae (i686) Consult /var/lib/dkms/psmouse-alps/0.10/build/make.log for more information. I have installed all the updates as well. Can someone help me out with this issue?

• Convincing Upper Management the need of larger monitors for Developers

  The company I work for has recently hired on several developers, and there are a limited number of monitors to go around. There are two types in the office - a standard 15" (thankfully flatscreen) and a widescreen 23". No developer has a machine capable of a dual monitor setup, and the largest monitors went to the people who got here first. Three or four new senior level developers only have a 15" monitor to work on. To make matters worse, there are perhaps a total of 25-30 DBAs/Testers/Admin types in the company who all have dual screen 23" setups. We have brought the issue to management, and they refuse to take away large monitors from people who have been here for years for the sake of new employees, even if they are senior level. We have pitched the idea of testers sacrificing a large monitor for one of our small ones, but they won't go for that either. What can I say to management to illustrate the need of monitors for developers?

• Ghosting Program for Ubuntu 12.10

  I am looking to figure out how to set up a mass backup system for a computer network (of about 25) and am looking for a ghosting program that makes an image of the entire system for backup/recovery purposes. While clonezilla would work.. you have to manually boot us the CD for it. I am looking for a program that runs INSIDE Ubuntu that sends a system image backup off to the network server at set times, then when needed could also be used to burn the clone back to the machine. Another words- automatically and the only time I have to do anything to it is when I need to burn a backup BACK to a 'crapped' machine. Any ideas?

• Asus A8N-SLI soundcard/headphone not recognized/working

  I have an Asus A8N-SLI with built-in sound-card which in the front has headset connection. Alsamixer V1.0.25 says Card: HD-Audio Generic Chip:ATI R6xx HDMI. Only option it gives is S/PDIF nothing else. I can only select the Generic sound-card others are not available. It seems it is not being recognized by Ubuntu. My technical skills are limited and I have searched for similar problems but could not find a solution. Any help in how to proceed forward is therefore greatly appreciated. I also have a windows focus problem with Gnome3 and Unity for which I will make a new question. Between those two problems it works like a charm as always. Though I'm only going to upgrade the laptop to 12.04 if I have the desktop running smoothly.

• AdSense link units targeting better keywords?

  I have one link unit above my navigation which targets exact keywords on what my site is about, on contrary my AdSense for content Leaderboard and Wide Skyscraper show ads that are totally opposite from my keyword, while my ctr increased for about 10 times with link unit I noticed CPC is lower also (but that was just based on one day, today is higher). Is it so bad to completely get rid of standard content ads and put link units, because this way I earn so little for that site but I think that is because smart pricing (accidental clicks on ads that my users are not interested)? I earn in whole day with about 25-35 clicks as much as keyword tool shows for only one click, my site is first for the topic? I really don't know what to do. Has anyone had similar situation or can give some advice?

• Handling (many) multiple projects in Git in an enterprise environment

  One of the advantages of older version control systems such as CVS and SVN in enterprise development is that anyone can connect to source control and see all the projects that the company has. This can make it easier to get a high level view of what kid of development is happening outside your sprint and also keeps everything in one place and easy to find. However, distributed version control systems (Git, specifically) use the repository as their base unit. They work best with one project (or several closely related projects) per repository. This makes repository management more difficult in most enterprise environments where it is not unusual to have more than 25-50 projects to support. As far as I have been able to determine, you have to keep a list somewhere else of all the repos you have. There is software available, like GitHub, that help, but that still is an extra step beyond a single connection string and listing the contents of the repository. What is the best way to deal with the complexity of multiple repositories?

  Recently I got access to a Symfony 1.2 project which is for just 1 website, but with too many applications. In the past, I have developed websites but with not more than 2 or 3 applications. The cross-application links are achieved by passing the full URL to the 'href' attribute. Since the site is still working absolutely fine, my question is will having too many front controllers (approximately 25-30) hamper the performance of the website? Should I just try to create Cross Application Links or put an additional effort in combining similar applications (I guess almost all of the site's frontend part) into 1 application but different modules ?

  What is the best way to allow for dynamic fields/database columns? For example, let's say we have a payroll system that allows a user to create unique salary structures for each employee. How could/should one handle this scenario? I thought of using a "salary" table that hold the salary component fields and joining these columns to a "salary_values" table that hold the actual values. • How to recover partially removed components of ubuntu-desktop?

  So I was messing around with tasksel to install LAMP. Foolishly I unchecked the ubuntu-desktop item. About 25% through the process I realized it is removing my desktop components. So I closed the terminal window, but now maybe something went wrong. Many default applications are gone and I can't even boot into the desktop. I have a separate home folder so I don't really have to worry about data, but I did install a lot of other software which would be gone if I take reformat and reinstall. So is there a way to recover the desktop from a live CD?
