• TortoiseMerge: is there a way to hide deleted lines in the merge window

  Hello, I am attempting to merge a large quantity of files. Several of these files are in conflict and TortoiseMerge is the tool of choice. When I view the code in the "merged" windows it shows me all the code that was deleted and added as well as ??? for code that is in-conflict. I am not really sure why it shows me the deleted code, but I do know that I don't want to see it. Seeing lines of code that were removed in a window that is "the results" doesn't make any sense; and, it makes it harder to read the. Is there a way to hide the deleted code in that "results" window so only the text that is actually going to be in the file, shows up? I have read the manual (cursively) and I didn't see anything in there that indicated how to accomplish this (seemingly insignificant) task.

• SDCC and malloc() - allocating much less memory than is available

  When I run compile this code with SDCC 3.1.0, and run it on an Amstrad CPC 464 (under emulation, with WinCPC 0.9.26 running on Wine): void _test_malloc() { long idx = 0; while (1) { if (malloc(5)) { printf("%ld\r\n", ++idx); } else { printf("done"); break; } } } ... it consistently taps out at 92 malloc()s. I make that 460 bytes, which leads me to a couple of questions: What is malloc() doing on this system? I was sort of hoping for an order of magnitude more storage even on a 64kB system The behaviour is consistent on 64kB systems and 128kB systems; do I have to perform some sort of magic to access the additional memory, like manual bank switching?

  Let's suppose we have an element like this one in the main xml file: <group name="gr1" filename="groups/gr1.xml"/>. The second file gr1.xml contains something like this: <item name="i1">Item one</item> <item name="i2">Item two</item> <item name="i3">Item three</item> Note that there is no XML declaration in gr1.xml, just plain items without single parent node. So… Which is the best way to replace <group/> with its <item/>s? I have already tried some things like manual enclosing of gr1.xml content into a single node with XML declaration and loading it into XmlDocument, but it doesn't look like a good solution.

But I met too many problems in Linq for the Linq support of OData is so limited. I have to modify most of my Linq statements and test them thoroughly again. I am wondering whether there is a system way to solve such a problem instead of my manual work. For example, by an external package. • Algorithm to find the smallest snippet from searching a document?

  I've been going through Skiena's excellent "The Algorithm Design Manual" and got hung up on one of the exercises. The question is: "Given a search string of three words, find the smallest snippet of the document that contains all three of the search words—i.e. , the snippet with smallest number of words in it. You are given the index positions where these words in occur search strings, such as word1: (1, 4, 5), word2: (4, 9, 10), and word3: (5, 6, 15). Each of the lists are in sorted order, as above." Anything I come up with is O(n^2)... This question is in the "Sorting and Searching" chapter, so I assume there is a simple and clever way to do it. I'm trying something with graphs right now, but that seems like overkill. Ideas? Thanks

• Massive git commit squashing

  My company is in the middle of converting from CVS over to git. We've been on CVS for a long time, so there is a huge history. Too much to do by hand. Looking at the logs, there is a lot of squashing that could be done. A whole lot. What I would like to do is hook in a script that will compare two adjacent commits. If it returns true, then concatenate the commit messages and squash the commits. I would also be happy with a command that accepts two commits and a commit message, then squashes them together. git rebase --interactive is close to what I need, but "squash" requires far too much manual intervention. I also looked at using "fixup" instead of squash, but I don't want to lose the commit messages. Any ideas?

• How to have favicon / icon set when bookmarklet dragged to toolbar?

  I've made myself a bookmarklet, and it functions just fine, but when added to a toolbar in Opera or Firefox, it just takes on the default bookmark icon for the browser (a globe and a star, respectively). My site has a favicon, and the window, tab and even [site] bookmark uses the favicon I've specified. Just not my bookmarklet. How can I code my site or bookmarklet so that the bookmarklet gets the favicon, too? I'm aware of various manual hackery techniques users can use to set the favicon after the fact, but those are undesirable solutions.

• Detecting a message box launched in another application

  I am developing a windows service, in vb .et, that launches a legacy application that performs some work. The service acts as a wrapper around the legacy app allowing users to automate an otherwise manual operation. Everything is working great, except occasionally the legacy app displays a messagebox. When it does this the process halts until the the message box closes. As the service will be running on a server there will be no user to close the message box. The service launches the legacy application in a System.Diagnostics.Process. My question is, is there way to detect that a message box has been displayed by a process that I have started using System.Diagnostics.Process and is there a way to through code to close the messagebox. I've tried to be brief so if you need more information please let me know. Thanks in advance Richie

• How to automate login to Google API to get OAuth 2.0 token to access known user account

  Ok, so this question has been asked before here. In the response/answer to the question, the user tells him to store the token in the application (session and not db, although it doesn't matter where you store it). After going through the documentation on Google, it seems that the token has an expiration date after which it is no longer valid. Now, we could obviously automatically refresh the token every fixed interval, thereby prolonging the lifespan of the token, but for some reason, this manual process feels like a hack. My questions is: Is this most effective (/generally accepted) way to access google calendar/app data for a known user account by manually logging in and persisting the token in the application? Or is there another mechanism that allows us to programmatically login to this user account and go through the OAuth steps?

• Should I stick only to AWS RDS Automated Backup or DB Snapshots?

  I am using AWS RDS for MySQL. With it comes on backup, I understand that amazon provides two types of backup - automated backup and database (DB) snapshot. The difference is explain in here - http://aws.amazon.com/rds/faqs/#23. However, I am still confuse if should I stick to automated backup only or both automated and manual (db snapshots). What do you think guys? What's the setup of your own? I heard to others that automated backup is not reliable due to some unrecoverable database when the DB instance is crashed so the DB snapshots are the way to rescue you. If I will do daily DB snapshots as similar settings to automated backup, I have gonna pay much bunch of bucks. Hope anyone could enlighten me or advise me the right set up. Thanks. James

  Hi all, I´m trying to write a function what detect this relation between the variables I have got in the workspace: v1 - fft(v2) = 0 Where v1, v2 are variables of my workspace. Sometimes I need to know which variables have a certain numerical relation. If I have thirty, I don´t want to be looking for this relation in "manual way", just itroducing a sentence for each pair of different variables. I would like a function in which I introuce (or I modify this function every time I need it) the sentence (for instance what I wrote before) and the function show me the pair of variables a I am looking for.   I am attempting to test user interaction with an off the shelf product. The current process is to run through a manual script and record how long certain processes take to populate data, it may populate a datagrid, a tree, a list box, etc... It will also need to be able record how long it takes to generate a pdf report. We do not require extremely accurate time just to the nearest second or less than a second. I need to know if there is a simple Automated testing product that will handle the above criteria.

• Does isolation frameworks (Moq, RhinoMock, etc) lead to test overspecification?

  In Osherove's great book "The Art of Unit Testing" one of the test anti-patterns is over-specification which is basically the same as testing the internal state of the object instead of some expected output. To my experience, using Isolation frameworks can cause the same unwanted side effects as testing internal behavior because one tends to only implement the behavior necessary to make your stub interact with the object under test. Now if your implementation changes later on (but the contract remains the same), your test will suddenly break because you are expecting some data from the stub which was not implemented. So what do you think is the best approach to counter this? 1) Implement your stubs/mocks fully, this has the negative side-effect of potentially making your test less readable and also specifying more than necessary to make your test pass. 2) Favor manual, fully implemented fakes. 3) Implement your stubs/fakes so that they make your test just pass, and then deal with the brittleness that this might introduce.

  I am trying to connect to a server remotely using the command line client window. I am using MySQL 5.1 and I do not know why I am getting syntax error. • How do you deploy your SharePoint solutions?

  I am now in the process of planning the deployment of a SharePoint solution into a production environment. I have read about some tools that promise an easy way to automate this process, but nothing that seems to fit my scenario. In the testing phase I have used SharePoint Designer to copy site content between the different development and testing servers, but this process is manual and it seems a bit unnecessary. The site is made up of SharePoint web part pages with custom web parts, and a lot of Reporting Services report definitions. So, is there any good advice out there in this vast land of geeks on how to most efficiently create and deploy a SharePoint site for a multiple deployment scenario? Edit Just to clarify. I need to deploy several "SharePoint Sites" into an existing site collection. Since SharePoint likes to have its sites in the SharePoint content database, just putting the files into IIS is not an option at this time.

• Why does php show error for my SQL query

  UPDATE: My mistake - I made a typo. Nevermind this question. I'm using php to update a mysql database. The resultant query I'm using when i print it out on my webpage before executing is as follows: INSERT INTO perch2_content_items (itemOrder, regionID, pageID, itemRev, itemID, itemJSON, itemSearch ) SELECT MAX(itemOrder)+1, 105, 81, 11, 118, 'json', 'search' FROM perch2_content_items WHERE regionID=105 When I copy and paste this query directly into the phpmyadmin SQL interface, it works fine. The table gets updated. • Easy way for Crystal Reports to MS SQL Server Reporting Services conversion

  Is there a way to easily convert Crystal Reports reports to Reporting Services RDL format? We have quite a few reports that will be needing conversion soon. I know about the manual process (which is basically rebuilding all your reports from scratch in SSRS), but my searches pointed to a few possibilities with automatic conversion "acceleration" with several consulting firms. (As described on http://www.microsoft.com/sql/technologies/reporting/partners/crystal-migration.mspx). Do any of you have any valid experiences or recomendations regarding this particular issue? Are there any tools around that I do not know about?

• Find groups with both validated, unvalidated users

  (Not my real MySQL schema, but illustrates what needs done.) Users can belong to many groups, and groups have many users. users: id INT validated TINYINT(1) groups: id INT name VARCHAR(20) groups_users: group_id INT user_id INT I need to find groups that contain both validated and unvalidated users (validated being 1 or 0, respectively), in order to perform a specific manual maintenance task. There are thousands of users, all belong to at least one group, but a group usually only has 2-5 users. This is a live production server, so I could probably craft a query myself, but the last one I tried took a matter of minutes before I killed it. (I'm not one of those brilliant SQL wizards.) I suppose I could take the server down for maintenance, but, if possible, a query that gets this job done in a matter of seconds would be fantastic. Thanks!

  I want to copy a mysql database from my local computer to a remote server. I am trying to use the mysql dump command. All the examples on the internet suggest doing something like The initial mysql> is just the prompt I get after logging in. mysql> mysqldump -u user -p pass myDBName | NewDBName.out; But when I do this I get You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds ... to use near 'mysqldump -u user -p pass myDBName | NewDBName.out' Since I have already logged in do I need to use -u and -p? Not doing so gives me the same error. Can you see what is wrong?

• What information do you capture your software crashes in the field?

  I am working on rewriting my unexpected error handling process, and I would like to ask the community: What information do you capture both automatic, and manually, when software you have written crashes? Right now, I capture a few items, some of which are: Automatic: Name of app that crashed Version of app that crashed Stack trace Operating System version RAM used by the application Number of processors Screen shot: (Only on non-public applications) User name and contact information (from Active Directory) Manual: What context is the user in (i.e.: what company, tech support call number, RA number, etc...) When did the user expect to happen? (Typical response: "Not to crash”) Steps to reproduce. What other bits of information do you capture that helps you discover the true cause of an applications problem, especially given that most users simply mash the keyboard when asked to tell you what happened. For the record I’m using C#, WPF and .NET version 4, but I don’t necessarily want to limit myself to those. • Does Exchange have ability to run hidden mailboxes?

  Hello, Title of my question may sound a little bit odd but I was thinking if Exchange 2010 or 2007 or any program that would work in conjunction with Exchange has ability to create this structure: Users having their normal mailboxes connected and using them as everyone would in Outlook 2003/2007/2010. Users having additional mailboxes (from old Exchange 2003) attached but hidden on demand of Administrator. For example administrator could easy disable them just like they never been attached making them invisible to users and everyone else. Would be good if such mailboxes could be easily removed out of system (lets say on external drive) by simple step not manual job for 100 mailboxes. Users without ability to copy/move their mails to outside storage (like a local .pst file)? Do you guys have any suggestions on this? I was thinking maybe using public folders but this seems like overkill and not really suited for this. And please don't ask me why I need this type of security (it's not something I requested).
