  • How can I play different sounds each time I startup?

    I have read questions on Changing startup sound in Ubuntu and Changing startup music in Ubuntu. I understand how to rename 'desktop-login.ogg' and copy the sound I want as 'desktop-login.ogg'. My question is - is there a way I can play different sounds each time I login? It may sound silly, but if possible I would like to play different sounds. I am guessing that this may be perhaps possible by running some kind of script which replaces/renames the desktop-login.ogg file each time I shutdown, so that a new file is ready to be played on the next startup. But I don't know how to copy a new file from a particular folder to desktop-login.ogg upon each shutdown, nor do I know where the script should reside. I would appreciate it if someone could tell me how to do it, or if there is an easier way of doing this. Thank you

  • Should Equality be commutative within a Class Hierachy?

    It is easy to define the Equals operation in ways that are not commutative. When providing equality against other types, there are obviously situations (in most languages) were equality not being commutative is unavoidable. However, within one's own inheritance hierarchy where the root base class defines an equality member, a programmer has more control. Thus you can create situations where (A = B) ? (B = A), where A and B both derive from base class T Substituting the = with the appropriate variation for a given language. (.Equals(_), ==, etc.) That seems wrong to me, however, I recognize I may be biased by background in Mathematics. I have not been in programming long enough to know what is standard/accepted/preferred practice when programming. Do most programmers just accept .Equals(_)may not be commutative and code defensibly. Do they expect commutativity and get annoyed if it is not. In short, when working in a class hierarchy, should effort me made to ensure Equality is commutative?

    I'm building a website for a student organization I am involved in at my college. Most of the site will be static - i.e. won't change from year-to-year, but certain pieces will. I am high-tech, but most of the others aren't, and I am graduating in the spring. So how should I go about building the website so as to allow those that take over in subsequent years to edit information? Examples: Events: I already plan on using a Google calendar for this Officers: There will be profiles/pictures for all the officers on the web page Connections: Partnerships with other organizations that we have currently, but may not in future, or may add more in future Should I use some form of CMS (Content Management System)? If so, how restrictive are they (e.g. Drupal) to what you can build and then how easy is it to edit. What other ways could I make a very nice-looking website but allow certain pieces to be edited later?

    My question may look bit philosophical and nonsense! But I need to know kind of instructions those are not well suitable in high level languages even in c? Or rarely use in the development of software? Like read/write content of CPU registers may useful in debugging programs. And access to cache memory required when developing OS (maybe I am wrong at this point). Is this kind of instruction available languages like Java, Python, C? I also have a second question: And Why all high level languages not having same uniform syntax; at-least same standard library interface name? In python there is and. Or operator is almost same as && and ||. I think Python is developed after C but space indentation is compulsory in Python. Why Python does not use brackets {}. I already know this question going to be highly down-voted.

    I recently heard that a big part in successful/quick debugging and easing the process of programming is to use a big screen. I may be purchasing a new computer in the future and this has me wondering: 1)Is the aforementioned statement actually true or is it a bit of a stretch? 2)Have you noticed that this plays a significant enough part to buy a bigger screen if the bigger screen is significantly more expensive? 3)Is it common for developers to work on 13'' laptop screen as their main (and only) workstation (this is what I currently develop on) or is this actually disadvantageous? This may be subjective but any professional opinions/experiences would be greatly appreciated!

  • Basic/research RTS engine/model

    Does a basic/research RTS engine/model exist that can be used as a basis for further experimentation/research? I'd like to avoid reinventing the wheel if possible. I'm aware of Spring Engine and Stratagus, but those are real game engines and may not be the best to experiment with and learn from. Ideally the docs for the model would answer questions like: How exactly do units move? (constant velocity? constant acceleration? constant force?) How is pathfinding handled? Does every grid cell become an A* graph node (may be expensive)? Does it consider threats? How are groups handled? (w.r.t pathfinding and movement) How is combat handled? I'm mostly interested in the low-level model details (for now), not the graphics etc. I've read a lot of the other quesions (and answers/references) tagged RTS but I haven't found my answer yet.

    So after the upgrade I made last night I can't load up the GUI properly. I have a feeling the upgrade died half way through. Grub is working. All the kernals are listed. That being said how can I: A) Make grub load into terminal only. No gui. B) How can I reinstall gnome? C) How can I try to install the upgrade for ubuntu again?   • What are some ways you use VS2010 Toolbox to be more productive?

    I just saw a presenter who had pre-loaded a large number of code snippets into the Toolbox so that he could pull them into the presentation rather than trying to re-type code on the spot (or have it already integrated and trying to comment/uncomment/etc.) This seemed like an extremely effective use. It got me thinking, though, that perhaps the Toolbox is far more powerful than I've ever considered, but a couple quick google searches didn't yield what I was looking for. What are some other uses of the Toolbox that could help in productivity which may or may not be obvious?

  • Did a bunch of wrong work, should I keep it?

    I have forked a repo and branched that clone to code a story, and because I didn't understand the problem, wrote code that isn't solving my task at hand, but may prove useful later. Should I: Delete it, and don't worry about it. Then commit without the extra code. Make yet another branch for just that work, commit it, but don't post a pull request on it. Just commit it with the existing code, and worry about the extra "fluff" later. I was thinking #2. If I understand correctly, I could just keep the extra code on a branch I never use on my clone, and dig it up later if something comes up that may benefit from using it.

  • Where can I find comprehensive documentation on the various aspects of Linux?

    Whenever a problem pops up in my use of Linux (full time user for 6 years) I start by googling. The simplest (or most common) issues will usually be cleared right away. If it's not in one of those two categories the advise I find tend to be wrong, misguided, obsolete, and if you ask a question here on "ask" you risk being "duplicated" to some superficially similar question. Some issues have haunted me for years until I suddenly hit on the actual developer's documentation (or equivalent) which in a few lines explains how to solve my issue, the correct and consistent way. Whenever that happens I'm always kicking myself: why didn't I just go here to begin with? And the obvious answer is: "I had no idea this was what I was looking for". And for the issues that this hasn't yet happened I'm banging my head: "This ought to be either straight forward or someone tell me it's not doable" So my question is: Are there projects out there trying to collect or list this documentation in a searchable/browseable way. I know there are many very good "if you want this do that" tutorials on Ubuntu but I'm looking for actual documentation. That either are or could be collected in one place (at least conceptually) so that search for information could start in one place. I'm fully aware this is a broad question but if you approach it as: Does gnome have a comprehensive documentation project - where do I find it? Does Ubuntu have a comprehensive documentation project - where do i find it? For example: how exactly does the mime-type association work in Ubuntu and in xubuntu? How exactly are menus created (in Ubuntu: quicklists, xubuntu/gnome: the main menu) How exactly does the rendering process work for compiz/x? (I'm having this issue where windows randomly stops updating until somehow forced to resume (I guess). So for instance where do I look for logs that may indicate the problem. How may I change randr or other settings that may influence this issue. So my point is to organize exact documentation or preferably to find projects that do this already. Thanks! If answers to this question get me started I'm hoping to collect such a list.

    Before making this question, I have searched and read these ones: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/541966/android-how-do-i-do-a-lazy-load-of-images-in-listview http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1409623/android-issue-with-lazy-loading-images-into-a-listview My problem is I have a ListView, where: Each row contains an ImageView, whose content is to be loaded from the internet Each row's view is recycled as in ApiDemo's List14 What I want ultimately: Load images lazily, only when the user scrolls to them Load images on different thread(s) to maintain responsiveness My current approach: In the adapter's getView() method, apart from setting up other child views, I launch a new thread that loads the Bitmap from the internet. When that loading thread finishes, it returns the Bitmap to be set on the ImageView (I do this using AsyncTask or Handler). Because I recycle ImageViews, it may be the case that I first want to set a view with Bitmap#1, then later want to set it to Bitmap#2 when the user scrolls down. Bitmap#1 may happen to take longer than Bitmap#2 to load, so it may end up overwriting Bitmap#2 on the view. I solve this by maintaining a WeakHashMap that remembers the last Bitmap I want to set for that view. Below is somewhat a pseudocode for my current approach. Is there any risk when the loading thread calls back to the ImageView later, when the Activity is already destroyed? Moreover, AsyncTask has some global thread-pool underneath, so if lengthy tasks are not canceled when they're not needed anymore, I may end up wasting time loading things users don't see. My current design of keeping this thing globally is too ugly, and may eventually cause some leaks that are beyond my understanding. Instead of making ImageLoader a singleton like this, I'm thinking of actually creating separate ImageLoader objects for different Activities, then when an Activity gets destroyed, all its AsyncTask will be canceled. Is this too awkward? Anyway, I wonder if there is a safe and standard way of doing this in Android. In addition, I don't know iPhone but is there a similar problem there and do they have a standard way to do this kind of task? Many thanks.

    In Microsoft Project 2007 Professional, If I select Tools Macro Security the message: The file "STDOLE.TLB" cannot be found or contains a Visual Basic for Applications library that is not valid. Verify that the file name is correct, and try again. If the Visual Basic for Applications library is invalid, reinstall Project. I am a software developer and I have developed an Add-In for MS Project using Visual Studio 2005, with all the problems that entails. As such my machine is configured with both Project 2003 Professional and Project 2007 Professional. I only noticed this error when trying to debug my Add-In. The Add-In loads and draws the menu, but when I click on the menu option I receive this error (which is also generated by the Tools Macros Security option mentioned above). I have tried repairing office installations and uninstalling everything and then re-installing everything all over again, but after several hours I still get the same problem. Does anyone have any idea how to resolve this? Some method of finding out what type libraries are registered with STDOLE2.TLB may help if I can identify what is causing the problem. Also a way of manually unregistering the nasty library may be helpful. My machine is configured as follows: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Project 2003 Professional Office 2007 Ultimate Project 2007 Professional Visio 2007 Professional Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Developers Visual Studio 2005 Tools for Office Second edition Visual Studio 2008 Professional I also installed MS Project 2010 Beta to test my Add-In against, but have since uninstalled it. I have a suspicion that this may have caused the problem, but I cannot be sure.

    I have a small pile of Sun V20z computers. I was trying to update the SP and BIOS firmwares in order to bring them all up to the same standard -- mostly to get the updated (ie actually useful) SP functionality, and figured that I would just do the BIOS while I was at it. For three of the four computers, it worked perfectly. However after the BIOS update, the fourth system won't boot. I did this: batch05-mgmt $ sp get mounts Local Remote /mnt 10.16.0.8:/export/v20z batch05-mgmt $ platform set os state update-bios /mnt/sw_images/platform/firmware/bios/V1.35.3.2/bios.sp This command may take several minutes. Please be patient. Bios started Bios Flash Transmit Started Bios Flash Transmit Complete Bios Flash update Progress: 7 Bios Flash update Progress: 6 Bios Flash update Progress: 5 Bios Flash update Progress: 4 Bios Flash update Progress: 3 Bios Flash update Progress: 2 Bios Flash update Progress: 1 Bios Flash update complete batch05-mgmt $ platform set power state on This command may take several minutes. Please be patient. After an hour of waiting, it still won't start. The chassis powers on, but beyond the fans spinning up and the hardware POST of the drives, nothing appears to happen. So if I try to re-flash the BIOS (on the theory that maybe something went wrong): batch05-mgmt $ platform set os state update-bios /mnt/sw_images/platform/firmware/bios/V1.35.3.2/bios.sp This command may take several minutes. Please be patient. Bios started Error. The operation timed out. Have I bricked it?

  • postfix Mail filters not running behind a controlled enviornment

    Hi, I have deployed a postfix server for email receiving. On this I have configured SenderID + SPF milter, by referring to http://www.postfix.org/MILTER_README.html The command that I used is as follows: ./sid-filter -u postfix -p inet:10027@localhost -l Following are my settings in main.cf file: #Milter support for smtpd mail smtpd_milters = inet:localhost:10027, inet:localhost:10028 # Milters for non-SMTP mail. non_smtpd_milters = inet:localhost:10027, inet:localhost:10028 milter_default_action = reject # Postfix . 2.6 #milter_protocol = 6 # 2.3 . Postfix . 2.5 milter_protocol = 2 Now I have this observation: One of the postfix that is setup on AWS CentOS 5.5 is working fine and is able to receive mails on defined mx record. One of the similar postfix(as in step 1) that is setup behind one of the corporate firewalls is not able to receive any mails and is giving following type of error logs: connect from xxxxxx.austin.hp.com[xx.xxx.96.198] May 25 13:20:02 g2t0385g postfix/smtpd[11733]: C11F9B0194: client=xxxxxxx.austin.hp.com[15.217.96.198] May 25 13:20:03 g2t0385g postfix/cleanup[11814]: C11F9B0194: message-id= May 25 13:20:03 g2t0385g postfix/cleanup[11814]: C11F9B0194: milter-reject: END-OF-MESSAGE from xxxxxx.austin.hp.com[xx.xxx.96.198]: 5.7.1 Command rejected; from= to= proto=ESMTP helo= Here the 'sid-filter' is giving problems.   • mdadm cron job sends email that cron has run

    I've got an Ubuntu 8.04 server using mdadm to create several RAID1 arrays. I created /etc/cron.hourly/mdadm as follows: #! /bin/sh set -e mdadm --monitor /dev/md0 /dev/md3 /dev/md4 --oneshot (Yes, the array numbers are not sequential, and I'm not using --scan beacuse I have a degraded array that may or may not have been used as swap and I can't delete, but I think that's a separate issue. If it's the underlying cause of this, I need to fix it.) mdadm sends me email (configured in the /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf) on DegradedArray etc. events. This is the desired behaviour.
