• How would you apply a BIOS update for a Dell M610 blade with VMware ESXi installed?

  Hello, all. We've got a Dell M610 blade with VMware ESXi 4 installed and we need to update it's BIOS to the latest version. Unfortunately, Dell only makes available a Windows (.exe) and Linux (.bin) versions of the BIOS update program (as well as a bootable DOS floppy version that is too big to fit on a 1.44MB floppy!). We've tried using various "LiveCD" versions of linux distributions but keep running into errors. Anyone out there with experience with Dell blades who could give us a hint or two to get this working?   I'm having problems with my ASP.NET web forms system. It worked on our test server but now we are putting it live one of the servers is within a DMZ and the SQL server is outside of that (on our network still though - although a different subnet) I have open up the firewall completely between these two boxes to see if that was the issue and it still gives the error message "Communication with the underlying transaction manager has failed" whenever we try and use the "TransactionScope". We can access the data for retrieval it's just transactions that break it. We have also used msdtc ping to test the connection and with the amendments on the firewall that pings successfully, but the same error occurs! How do i resolve this error? Any help would be great as we have a system to go live today. Panic :)

That program would give the user a set of boot choices. That leaves Windows Boot Loader do be a particular boot choice, that represents a particular installation of Windows. If that is the case i would need to create a new Windows Boot Loader entry. This means i might want to use the /create parameter: /create Creates a new boot entry: bcdedit [/store filename] /create [id] /d description [/application apptype | /inherit [apptype] | /inherit DEVICE | /device] So i assume a syntax of: >bcdedit /create /d "The old Windows 7" /application osloader Where application can be one of the following types: Apptype Description BOOTSECTOR The boot sector application OSLOADER The Windows boot loader RESUME A resume application Unfortunately, the only documentation about osloader is "The Windows boot loader". i don't see how that can differentiate between Windows 8 on one hard drive, and Windows 7 on another. The other possible parameter when /create a boot loader is >bcdedit /create /D "Windows Vista" /device "The Quick Brown Fox" Unfortunately the documentation is missing for /device: /device Optional. If id is not set to a well-known identifier, the option that is used to specify the new boot entry as an additional device options entry. But i have on idea what it is saying; those words in that order seem nonsensical. Which is a long-winded explanation of why the Windows 8 installer didn't detect the existing Windows 7 install. Normally the installer would have automatically created the required entries for dual-boot. Not that the reason i'm asking the question is important. 2 Really there's three drives, but the third is just bulk storage. The existence of a 3rd hard drive is irrelevant to the question. i only mention it in case someone wants to know why the screenshot has 3 hard drives when i only mention two. 3 i arbitrarily started numbering partitions at "zero"; not to imply that partitions are numbered starting at zero. i only mention partitions because i don't see how any boot-loader could do its job without knowing which partition, and which folder, an installation of Windows is located in. 4 i'm asking about BCDEdit. i tried Visual BCD Editor. It seems to be a visual BCD editor. That is to say that it's a GUI, but still uses the same terminology as BCDEdit, and requires the same knowledge that BCD doesn't document. 5 For simplicity sake we'll assume that all installation of Windows i want to dual-boot between are Windows Vista or later, making them all compatible with the BCDEdit and the binary boot loader. The alternative would require delving into the intricacies of the old ntloader. Nor am i asking about dual booting to Linux; or how to boot to a Virtual Hard Drive (vhd) image. Just modern versions of Windows on existing hard drives in the same machine. Note: You can ignore everything after the word Background. It's all pointless exposition to satisfy some people's need for "research effort" before they'll consider being helpful. Some people have even been known to summarily close questions unless there is research effort. Some people have been know to close questions if there is too much research effort. Some people close questions when i put the note saying that they can ignore everything after the Background out of spite. Some people are just grumpy.

  I recently upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard, and now I'm having strange issues with a previously working NetExtender. After debugging a "can't read/execute /etc/ppp/peers" problem (since /etc/ppp didn't exist) and following the advice on the Apple support forums (I tried a clean install, and sudo chmod u+s /usr/sbin/pppd had no effect), I'm getting this error: Connected. Logging in... Login successful. Using SSL Encryption Cipher 'DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA' Using new PPP frame encoding mechanism SSL-VPN logging out... FATAL: An error was detected in processing the options given, such as two mutually exclusive options being used. (2) SSL-VPN connection is terminated. Thanks for any help.

• Why do I get Access Denied when using WinRM?

  Following on from this question: Why does my PowerShell script hang when called in PSEXEC via a batch (.cmd) file? I took the advice from Jim B and installed WinRM. To recap I have two servers: HMon01 - runs Windows 2003 Standard SP2 Web1928 - runs Windows 2008 Standard SP2 Both servers are standalone. I installed WinRM for Windows 2003 from here and configured WinRM as follows on both machines: Client NetworkDelayms = 5000 URLPrefix = wsman AllowUnencrypted = false Auth Basic = true Digest = true Kerberos = true Negotiate = true Certificate = true DefaultPorts HTTP = 80 HTTPS = 443 TrustedHosts = * The problem I have is that if I remotely execute commands using the remote machine's built in Administrator account then all is well. However I have an account on the remote machine named remoteexec which is a member of the Administrators group (we disable our Administrator accounts). If I use this account then I get Access Denied errors. I've done all the usual things such as checking passwords and the like. Why would this be?

• Cant turn off Redirected Access on Cluster Shared Volumes 2008r2 Failover clustering

  I read up on LH Mode and am still boggled what it is and what it does. I pass all validation on the Failover cluster wizard but in the Event Viewer I get erros for Event ID 5121 and 1034 related to one of the disks that is in the CSV for my hyper v machines. We have two disks in the CSV for our hyper V farm. Everything seems to work just fine but im worried about the even viewer errors. I have also read that people are having problems like I turning off Redirected access.

• SonicPoint AP Clients Not Able To Connect With DHCP

  This is my first time setting up anything like this so please be gentle. I'm a web developer who fell into setting up a few SonicWall NSA 4200's... I've tried doing as much research on this through Google and ServerFault but haven't been able to hunt down an answer as to what I'm doing wrong. We've got two virtual access points set up here, one that is intended for employees (tied to X2) and the other for guests (tied to X2:V1). We are not using the DHCP server on the NSA 4200, but one already on the network. When a client connects to the employee SSID they are able to obtain a IP from the network's DHCP server. However when attempting to connect to the guest SSID the client does a search for a DHCP server but can't find one. Any clues, resources, answers would be appreciated.

• Dual NIC Networking CentOS 5.3 (losing connection)

  I have a CentOS System with two NICs on it. One is Ethernet the other is Wireless. The Ethernet has an address of 192.168.1.110 and is tied to a LAN. (The LAN provides DHCP and DNS for its domain of 192.168.1.*) The Wireless card should have an address of 131.238.. and is tied to the WAN. For some evil reason, I can get the WAN to work for a short amount of time then it suddenly dies. I have to turn on/off the connection to get it to work again. Any suggestions?

• Cisco VPN Client connects but unable to ping or RDP

  I'm a developer and don't have much networking expertise, so bare with me. I'm using the Cisco VPN Client 5.0.02.0090 to connect to my work's VPN that way I can RDP into my work computer. Once connected, I can't ping anything on the local network once connected to the VPN thus I am unable to access my work's network. This used to work about two weeks ago but abruptly stopped working today. However, I have the Cisco VPN Client installed on my laptop and I am able to ping and RDP into my work computer from there. Both my desktop and laptop computers are connected to the same router at home. I have tried the following so far: Rebooted my computer Reinstalled VPN client Updated NIC drivers Disabled firewall Opened up ports 500, 4500, and 10000 Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

• Server with IIS and Apache - how to SSL encrypt Apache with IIS

  I have a Windows Server 2003 box already setup and working with IIS 6. IIS is set to serve a site out over both HTTP and HTTPS connections using default ports. For various reasons I need to set Apache up on the same server and it needs to serve its pages to end-users as SSL encrypted HTTPS pages. Neither IIS or Apache are (or are ever likely to be) particularly high traffic or high usage. The way I see it there are two possible ways this could be done. Either export the SSL cert from IIS,set it up in Apache and get Apache to server the HTTPS connections itself over a non-default port. Or use IIS to proxy Apache in some way over it's existing SSL security. What is going to end up easiest to setup, configure, maintain and run? Which is going to work best? Has anyone done this sort of thing before? Any tips or things to look out for?

  Have a Lenovo laptop which i'm trying to capture an image from as a test (we are moving from HP as our std laptop) and i keep getting the PXE E52 error when trying to boot from LAN. With things exactly as they are all the previous HP models are connecting ok. I'm at a loss as to what to test, as its working for the HP kit and don't want to break that. Note: DHCP server and WDS server are two separate boxes but on same scope, VLAN, etc. and the DHCP lease is not full.

  How can I make them modal? With modal I mean: The dialog should block the desktop so the user has only two options: Either cancel the dialog or enter text into it. (I want this basically because new windows might popup and can steal focus and additionally that other programs can access configuration files inside that container) Background: I want to ask a passphrase after login for an encfs container. So either entering a pass, or continue with cancellation of this dialog. Note: This is not a duplicate of modal dialog popup alarm, as I am interested especially in a solution to Zenity dialogs.

  I'm using the following devices for my home network: Router 1: Speedport W 723 V (192.168.2.1) Router 2: AVM Fritzbox 3270 (192.168.2.2) NAS: Synology DS 207+(192.168.2.3) I successfully set up a WDS connection between the two routers. The Speedport acts as basestation, the Fritzbox repeats the WIFI signal of the Speedport. Everything fine, so far. Now I'm trying to achieve the following: Client → Speedport (Base) → Fritzbox (Repeater) → Synology NAS I want to use my Synology NAS attached to the Fritzbox (which is in repeating mode). I already gave it a static IP (as written above) but all connection attempts failed. Did I miss something out or is this set-up simply impossible?

• VAMT 3.0 Proxy Activate - No ‘Apply Confirmation ID’ option at all

  I tried to activate my windows box in isolated network zone, so I followed the process of 'Scenario 2: Proxy Activation' in http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh825202.aspx using two VAMT 3.0 hosts. Everything went fine (actually I'm not sure what option to choose when exporting VAMT data to .cilx file, I tried 'Export products and product keys' and 'Export proxy activation data only' anyway, is this a cause of this problem, I have no idea), until I wanted to apply the CID and activate the isolated pc. In 'Activate', there is no 'Apply Confirmation ID' option!, its only options are 'Acquire and save confirmation ID only' and 'Acquire confirmation ID, apply to selected machine(s) and activate'. The error message is 'cannot resolve remote name 'go.microsoft.com'' when I chose any of them, looks like acquire confirmation id always need to go to this url. But I just want to apply cid... Has anyone run into this, please? I searched internet, seems no answer... Any suggestion would be appreciated, thank you!

• Need help trouble shooting high CPU usage by PHP-fpm

  There is a problem that is driving me crazy. After the day I tried to fix the CPU usage problem of my VPS, the CPU load has grown from 60% to 150%, and I have no idea what causes the problem. Please help me. I had installed a copy of mediawiki on a Linode 1024. The wiki is running on Niginx + PHP-fpm + MySql. The wiki doesn't have much traffic, only around 4000 requests/day, mostly from Google and Bing bots. It had been using around 60% (of total 400% on the Linode) of the CPU before. I thought it was a bit high, so two day ago, I was trying to fix the problem (not knowing what was waiting for me). I did nothing but added a new empty line to wiki's configure file, which would change the modified time of the configure file, and then all the cached page files would be set invalidated. I had done that before, and that would cause high CPU usage, but normally it would take only hours to let things back to normal again. Not this time, my CPU usage has been around 150% for more than two days. It is php-fpm using most of CPU reassures. Using 100% of three cores is not rare. I hadn't seen that before. There are other sites on the Linode, but it should be the wiki. Because if I offline the wiki, CPU usage will drop back to around 40% soon. The day I also duplicated php-fpm.conf, and opened it, but didn't changed it. I have no idea what I did wrong. I here ask for help to save myself from being crazy!!! It is php-fpm. Is there a way to find out what is it doing?   I have McAffee virusscan on my work computer, and every time I start up, I get 2 log entries like this: Blocked by port blocking rule C:\Program Files\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe Anti-virus Standard Protection:Prevent IRC communication The difference between the two, is that at the end there are 2 different IP addresses (which I don't recognise as belongs to us) with port :6667 on one and :6669 on the other. Although this is logged, Skype seems to work as expected; including talking, chatting and screen sharing (new feature in Skype 4.1). Anyone knows anything about what this is? EDIT: I also have a Skype certified plugin in Skype called Cucku Backup. I did not find anything in the documentation that Cucku is trying to access these ports through Skype, but it could be...? EDIT2: I did a search on the IP addresses in question on www.webyield.net, and resulted in the following: IP 71.251.72.173 (this one used port :6667): Host name: pool-71-251-72-173.tampfl.fios.verizon.net IP 79.87.54.165 (this one used port :6669): Host name: 165.54.87-79.rev.gaoland.net

  I need to send emails from my social service (this is continuation of Experiences in mailing to registered users). I got strong feeling that it's better to avoid problems with email server configuration and maintance and to choose email provider which will take care of all painful problems. So several offers were compared: http://imgur.com/JkK2X.jpg Three of them look very attractive: Postageapp / Sendgrid / CritSend As alternative i'm considering setup GAE app. Email provider is quite easy to start work with, but have no idea how much effort require GAE to integrate with PHP. So my question is: which option is better to choose: email provider GAE ? Two factors are important here: business background (therefore prices are mentioned), work required to setup and maintain desired solution. Preferably i would love to avoid all email-related problems (like black lists and so on).

• Network shares do not mount.

  My network shares were mounting fine yesterday.. suddenly they are not. They were mounting fine for the last two weeks or however long since I added them. • NFS to NFS mount

  I have a machine that I need to bridge NFS files to. Can I mount an NFS directory on machine2 from machine1 and then mount the mounted NFS directory on machine2 on machine3 via NFS? Do you see any problems with that? I am basically bridging some subnet domains this way, in a certain fashion. My development machine is on a different and separate (unbridged) than where I would like to use the files, and I would like this machine1(dev machine) - machine2(passthrough machine) - machine3(test machine) connection. And no there is no way to move the test machine as it's a chassis :) and it's two buildings away.

• IIS Permissions or NTFS Permissions?

  I currently have a Windows Server 2003 setup to serve multiple sites via IIS. One of our directories needs to allow access to only 1 specific AD Security Group. I know there are two ways to accomplish this. One is using IIS to add permissions and the other is to set permissions on the folder/directory itself. A script runs at night and populates the content so users only need read permissions to view it in a browser. My question is which one is preferred?

• iPhone - Outlook 2010 sync'd items

  I'm not sure if this is a problem with Outlook 2010, or the fact that I don't have an Exchange box, or the fact that I have two MAPI mailboxes (both using Outlook Live Connector), or something else... so let me just describe the situation. iTunes says that I'm sync'ing happily, all the Calendar, Contact items, Notes... and if I have changed several things I get the "you're changing more than 5% of items" warning, persuading me that the sync'ing is working. I just can't find those items on my PC. They're not sync'ing with either of my Live accounts (Calendar or Contacts), and I can't find any track of anything. iTunes says I have Calendar folders called "" and "Calendar", but doesn't show any Contact groups at all. So how do I find out where they're going to... or change where they're going to... or anything?

• Best choice for a personal "online backup" in Europe

  I'm looking for an online backup solution for personal use - besides all the usual requirements (like not too expensive, since it's for personal use), I'd like to add two requirements to it: data center should be in Europe (I don't want my personal data stored in the US, when the next crazed president comes along and wants to confiscate and rifle through everybody's files.....) the online backup store should be accessible through a drive letter in cmd.exe So far, I've looked at a few services, but none have totally convinced me: Dropbox is looking ok, but they insist on creating a silly "My Dropbox" directory in my data path - and there's no way I can choose that name. Sorry - "My everything" is for dummies - I don't like that, I like to name my files and folders according to my liking LiveDrive is OK, too - they offer European storage, drive letter and all - but those drive letters are only available in the Windows Explorer - and not on the cmd.exe command line :-( and since I do 99% of my work on the command line, this is a major drawback..... Any other services I haven't looked at worth checking out? Marc
