• best way to "introduce" OOP/OOD to team of experienced C++ engineers

  I am looking for an efficient way, that also doesn't come off as an insult, to introduce OOP concepts to existing team members? My teammates are not new to OO languages. We've been doing C++/C# for a long time so technology itself is familiar. However, I look around and without major infusion of effort (mostly in the form of code reviews), it seems what we are producing is C code that happens to be inside classes. There's almost no use of single responsibility principle, abstractions or attempts to minimize coupling, just to name a few. I've seen classes that don't have a constructor but get memset to 0 every time they are instantiated. But every time I bring up OOP, everyone always nods and makes it seem like they know exactly what I'm talking about. Knowing the concepts is good, but we (some more than others) seem to have very hard time applying them when it comes to delivering actual work. Code reviews have been very helpful but the problem with code reviews is that they only occur after the fact so to some it seems we end up rewriting (it's mostly refactoring, but still takes lots of time) code that was just written. Also code reviews only give feedback to an individual engineer, not the entire team. I am toying with the idea of doing a presentation (or a series) and try to bring up OOP again along with some examples of existing code that could've been written better and could be refactored. I could use some really old projects that no one owns anymore so at least that part shouldn't be a sensitive issue. However, will this work? As I said most people have done C++ for a long time so my guess is that a) they'll sit there thinking why I'm telling them stuff they already know or b) they might actually take it as an insult because I'm telling them they don't know how to do the job they've been doing for years if not decades. Is there another approach which would reach broader audience than a code review would, but at the same time wouldn't feel like a punishment lecture? I'm not a fresh kid out of college who has utopian ideals of perfectly designed code and I don't expect that from anyone. The reason I'm writing this is because I just did a review of a person who actually had decent high-level design on paper. However if you picture classes: A - B - C - D, in the code B, C and D all implement almost the same public interface and B/C have one liner functions so that top-most class A is doing absolutely all the work (down to memory management, string parsing, setup negotiations...) primarily in 4 mongo methods and, for all intents and purposes, calls almost directly into D. Update: I'm a tech lead(6 months in this role) and do have full support of the group manager. We are working on a very mature product and maintenance costs are definitely letting themselves be known.

• Configuring Linux Network

  Hi I'm working on some software, that runs on a Centos 5.xx installation. I'ts not allowed for our customers to log in to Linux, everything is done from Windows applications, developed by us. So we have build a frontend for the user to configure network setup: Static/DHCP, ip-address, gateway, DNS, Hostname. Right now I let the user enter the information in the Windows app, and then write it on the Linux server like this: Write to /etc/resolv.conf: Nameserver Write to /etc/sysconfig/network: Gateway and Hostname Write to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0: Ipaddress, Netmask, Bootproto(DHCP or Static) I also (after some time) found out that I was unable to send mail, unless I wrote in /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 Hostname All this seems to work, but is there a better/easier way to do this? Also, I read the network configuration nearly the same way, but if I use DHCP, I miss som information, for instance the Ip-address. I know that I can get some information from the commandline (ifconfig), but I dont get for instance Hostname, Gateway and DNS. Is there a commandline tool that will display this?

  I've a fujitsu lifebook S7220, it's been a while since i try to configure it to use a dual head with centos 5.4 x86_64. Everytime I try, the xserver crash... I've got an intel chipset mobile 4 serie (GMA 4500MHD, if I recall good!) • VLC Ati Radeon 6870 Ubuntu 12.04 image skewed flicker

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 with ATI Radeon 6870 connected to my 40' Sharp TV. The video image is slightly jigged, like breaking a bit and slightly delayed. It just isn't smooth. The computer is very fast, like i7 with 12gb ram. • Making simple forms in web applications

  How do you work with forms in your web applications? I am not talking about RESTful applications, I don't want to build heavy front-end using frameworks like Backbone. For example, I need to add "contact us" form. I need to check data which was filled by user and tell him that his data was sent. Requirements: I want to use AJAX. I want to validate form on back-end side and don't want to duplicate the same code on front-end side. I have my own solution, but it doesn't satisfy me. I make an AJAX request with serialized data on form submit and get response. The next is checking "Content-type" header. html - It means that errors with filling form are exists and response html is form with error labels. - I will replace my form with response html. json and response.error_code == 0 - It means that form was successfully submited. - I will show user notification about success. json and response.error_code != 0 - Something was broken on back-end (like connection with database). other - I display the following message : We have been notified and have started to work with that problem. Please, try it later. The problem of that way is that I can't use it with forms that upload file. What is your practise? What libraries and principles do you use?

  Is there a command line interface to Windows Media Center in Windows 7. I have an SSH daemon installed on my media center box and would love to be able log in via SSH and get the list of upcoming recordings. As it is, I need to use Remote Desktop and then tell Media Center to run in GDI mode to display the upcoming recordings which is slow and cumbersome. Here are interesting commands that I'm wondering about: List upcoming recordings List most recent recordings Status of scheduler I'd rather not have to install Remote Potato to accomplish this.

Like in the title my problem concernig this boring stutting when i play a Tv series episodes or a film on VLC whit my mew PC. • How can I use 2 monitors plus laptop with my Dell e6420 w/ Nvidia nvs 4200m

  I have just hooked up a 2nd external monitor to my Dell e6420 laptop with a Nvidia NVS 4200m graphics card, running Windows 8 64 bit. However, the computer won't let me have both monitors and the laptop display active at the same time. I installed the latest Nvidia graphics drivers (310.70) but it claims that my GPU can only support up to 2 monitors. Nivdia's website implies differently (as does various other laptops around the office). The monitors are connected both via DVI to my dell docking station that has multiple DVI ports. Both monitors are working correctly, I just can't get all 3 working together. Attempting to download the driver from dell fails, as their driver installer is broken apparently Any ideas?

  What do you do when you really want to access a webpage only to find that it is either offline or overloaded from too much traffic? You can get access to the most recent cached version using the Resurrect Pages extension for Firefox. The Problem If you have ever encountered a website that has become overloaded and unavailable due to sudden popularity (i.e. Slashdot, Digg, etc.) then this is the result. No satisfaction to be had here… Resurrect Pages in Action Once you have installed the extension you can add the Toolbar Button if desired…it will give you the easiest access to Resurrect Pages. Or you can wait for a problem to occur when trying to access a particular website and have it appear as shown here. As you can see there is a very nice selection of cache services to choose from, therefore increasing your odds of accessing a copy of that webpage. If you would prefer to have the access attempt open in a new tab or window then you should definitely use the Toolbar Button. Clicking on the Toolbar Button will give you access to the popup window shown here…otherwise the access attempt will happen in the current tab. Here is the result for the website that we wanted to view using the Google Listing. Followed by the Google (text only) Listing. The results with the different services will depend on how recently the webpage was published/set up. View Older Versions of Currently Accessible Websites Just for fun we decided to try the extension out on the How-To Geek website to view an older version of the homepage. • Running Ubuntu with multiple monitors having a panel each

  I have just installed Ubuntu and I'm trying to set up a correct configuration for having multiple monitors. I want the two monitors to have their own workspaces, yet the ability to drag a window from one monitor to the next. I also want a separate panel (taskbar) for each monitor. I have played around with nvidia-settings and tried the following different configs: Having both monitors `Use separate X screen" A panel for each monitor but I couldn't drag windows from one monitor to the next Using TwinView The ability to drag windows from one monitor to the next but only a single panel for the primary display Now I want to have the above configurations combined. Basically, as I stated beforehand, having a separate panel for each monitor and also the ability to drag windows across monitors. Can anyone provide me with suggestions please?

  I'm a software developer who is willing to improve his software design skills. I think software should not only work but have a solid and elegant design too to be reusable and extensive to later purposes. Now I'm in search of some help figuring out good practices for specific problems. Actually, I'm trying to find out how to design a piece of software that would be extensible via plug-ins. The questions I have are the following: Should plug-ins be able to access each others functionality? This would bring dependencies I guess. What should the main application offer to the plug-ins if I want to let's say develop a multimedia software which would play videos and music but which could later on get functionality added over plug-ins that would let's say be able to read video status (time, bps, ...) and display it. Would this mean that the player itself would have to be part of the main program and offer services to plug-ins to get such information or would there be a way to develop the player as a plug-in also but offer in some way the possibility to other plug-ins to interact with it? As you see, my questions are mainly for learning purposes as I strive to improve my software development skills. I hope to find help here and apologize if something is wrong with my question.

• Outlook connected to exchange does not send email

  I have multiple machines with Outlook 2010 connected to RackSpace hosted exchange server. Everything works fine, but emails send after a while since outlook started will not leave the outbox. Clicking Send & Receive will display the progress bar at 100% completed with no errors, but is not really finishing. The Cancel All button is still active. The emails in the outbox are bold & italic, so ready to be send. When I close outlook and start it again, the mails are sent immediately without problems. I have tried the following: Checked if there are any third party addins: only Microsoft Add ins Checked if the virus scanner is blocking anything, but McAfee is not doing this. Checked and Repaired the .ost file Increased the server time-out from 30 seconds to 60 seconds Nothing helped. Any suggestions?

• Bandwidth monitor for apache websites

  I am after a web application that will parse apache log files and record how much bandwidth the user has used. We have several virtual hosts that have custom log files and the I/O is recorded at the end of the logfile. However I can't find an application that will parse multiple log files and display a summary for each site. I believe awstats can do this but I want to be able to see all of my clients in one list. If there is something that integrates into cacti then that would be perfect.

• Ctrl W s not splitting windows in vim

  I am trying to use Ctrl+ws to split a window in vim. However it is not working in my case. I opened a file using vim filename. Then I pressed Ctrl+ws. But as soon as I press just Ctrl+w it clears the viewport and I could see my shell display before vim opened the file. I mean the view port is replaced by the content just before the file was opened. However, I am still editing the file with vim. Suggestions?

• Anonymouse VS Logged in users on my site & Google Analytics

  I'd like to be able to run two different 'tracks' for Google Analytics; One for anonymous users of the site and another for Users whom are logged-in. I say "track" because Im not sure of the term--but I definitely know I want it to all be in the same "Analytics Account", I just want to segregate my logged-in users... In the site template, I can very easily add a conditional to display one or the other (Analytics code snippet)... Which Im hoping this comes down to and although Im not sure, it seems that the last digit in your Analytics ID (e.g. UA-15XXXX0-X) could be incremented to gain such additional 'tracks'....? Any tips? • Pausing and Resuming the jQuery / ASP.NET News Ticker

  Many websites display a news ticker of one sort or another. A news ticker is a user interface element that displays a subset of a list of items, cycling through them one at a time after a set interval. In December 2010 I wrote an article titled Use jQuery and ASP.NET to Build a News Ticker that explored how to create your own news ticker widget using jQuery and ASP.NET. The news ticker's content is defined as an unordered list (<ul>) where each list item (<li>) represents a news headline. Once the ticker's content is defined, having it cycle through the head lines is as simple as calling the JavaScript function startTicker(id, numberToShow, duration), which begins cycling the headlines in the unordered list with the specified id, showing numberToShow headlines at a time and cycling to the next headline every duration number of milliseconds. This installment shows how to enhance the news ticker to enable pausing and resuming. With these enhancements, the ticker can be configured to automatically pause rotating its headlines when the user mouses over it, and to resume rotating them once the user mouses out. • Browser-based Operating System

  I have a bunch of touchscreen machines that I want to display a webpage on and have users interact with the webpage via the touchscreen. Right now, this is done with a full-blown OS with a browser set to run at startup. I think maybe the ideal solution is to use a Linux-based OS that boots up, starts X, then starts a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, or whatever) in full screen mode. What kind of options do I have? I really want to avoid using a full-blown OS like I do now. It looks unprofessional and takes a while to boot up. I was thinking maybe Chrome OS or something, but I wouldn't know how to set it up for my purposes, since it's still designed to be used as a desktop OS instead of a kiosk-type OS.

What if you could use your Java skills and deploy an app to a fraction of these devices (don't be greedy, how about just, say, 118,000 of them)? Fareed Suliman, Java ME Product Manager had lots of good news for Java Developers in his presentation Modernizing the Explosion of Advanced Microcontrollers with Embedded Java at ARM TechCon in Santa Clara, CA last week. "A radical architecture shift is underway in this space, from proprietary to standards-based," he explained.  He pointed out several advantages to using Embedded Java for devices: Java is a proven and open standard. Java provides connectivity, encryption, location, and web services APIs. You don't have to focus on and keep reinventing the plumbing below the JVM. Abstracting the software from the hardware allows you to repeat your app across many devices. Abstracting the software from the hardware allows allows parallel development so you can get your app done more quickly. You already know Java (or you can hire lots of Java talent). Java is a full ecosystem, with Java Embedded plugins for IDEs like Eclipse and NetBeans. Java ME allows for in-field software upgrades. Suliman mentioned two ways developers can start using Java Embedded today:  Java ME Embedded Suite 7.0 Oracle Java Embedded Suite is a new packaged solution from Oracle (including Java DB, GlassFish for Embedded Suite, Jersey Web Services Framework, and Oracle Java SE Embedded 7 platform), created to provide value added services for collecting, managing, and transmitting data to embedded devices such as gateways and concentrators. Oracle Java ME Embedded 3.2 Oracle Java ME Embedded 3.2 is designed and optimized to meet the unique requirements of small embedded, low power devices such as micro-controllers and other resource-constrained hardware without screens or user interfaces. • A synergy alternative that just works?

  I have been using Synergy for a few days now on my Windows 7 desktop (as server) and Macbook (client). Unfortunately, it seems to be buggy - often, the keyboard would stop working on the Mac to the point of forcing me to use the Macbook's keyboard. There are other weird problems as well. Is there a better/proprietary alternative to Synergy? It should support both Windows and Mac. I'd be more than willing to pay for it if it would just work. Edit: How is VNC/TeamViewer supposed to help? I'm not looking to merely access a remote desktop, I only want to share the keyboard/mouse with multiple computers (mac, windows) retaining their own display.
