• CSS Rotation & IE: absolute positioning seems to break IE

  I'm trying to rotate a variety of text blocks so they are vertically oriented, and position them in very specific locations on a diagram which will be previewed and then printed. CSS rotates the text very nicely in IE, FF, even Opera. But when I try to position a rotated element, IE 7 & 8 (not worried about 6) breaks completely and the element stays in its original location. Any way around this? I really need to-the-pixel control of where these labels are located. • ASP.Net 2.0 VB WebSite Project "Type 'Exception' is not defined"

  All of a sudden our VB ASP.Net 2.0 WebSite Project started complaining that Exception was not defined. I have discovered that if I add "Imports System" to the header, or explicitly use System.Exception that it works, but this error permeates a lot of other System descendants like the Data namespace, and the DateTime object. We have hundreds and hundreds of pages, so adding Imports System to all of them not only would be time consuming, but it seems like a band-aid fix to the problem. I have checked the Project-Property Pages-References, and the web.config file, and the assembly is imported into the project, it is just not being "Auto Imported" into the Class Files like it USUALLY is. Note this does not JUST affect CodeBehind, but All className.vb files. I would like to fix this problem, but more importantly would like to understand what could cause the System namespace to all of a sudden stop being auto imported. There is obviously some file change that caused this, as my co-worker started seeing the problem this morning after he did a Full-Get on the project. MORE: The Web.Config file located in the Windows\Microsoft.Net...\Config\Web.Config file does have the , and System is added. Adding the tags, and adding System to the LOCAL web.config did nothing to mitigate the problem. Any help would be appreciated. First SO Question, so I hope I was descriptive enough.

  Hi all I've followed this tutorial to try to add a template to Visual Studio: http://www.switchonthecode.com/tutorials/visual-studio-how-to-create-item-templates The template I have created is designed to add one predefined .aspx and one predefined .aspx.cs file to the project. • DataTableReader is invalid for current DataTable 'TempTable'

  Hi, I'm getting the following error whenever my code creates a DataTableReader from a valid DataTable Object: "DataTableReader is invalid for current DataTable 'TempTable'." The thing is, if I reboot my machine, it works fine for an undertimed amount of time, then dies with the above. The code that throws this error could have been working fine for hours and then: bang. you get this error. It's not limited to one line either; it's every single location that a DataTableReader is used. Also, this error does NOT occur on the production web server - ever. This is an example of one of the lines where it falls over: If I step over this line, I get this: However, if I do this in the immediate window: I get no problems. Same goes if I actually use that line in the code. This has been driving me nuts for the best part of a week, and I've failed to find anything on Google that could help (as I'm pretty positive this isn't a coding issue). • Matlab crashes on library initialize when called from Java

  Hello everyone. The setup I have is I'm using a Java application to call native C-code with JNI, which in turn starts up the MATLAB runtime and calls functions on it (I know there are other solutions to call MATLAB methods from Java). The problem is that the MATLAB engine crashes at some point during the initialization and I don't know what's causing it exactly. The crash causes my jvm to terminate, I assume it's some kind of memory corruption. • ASP.NET MVC Ajax.BeginForm eats params of submit button clicked. Looks like bug.

Everything is submitted to the controller fine but the params for the submit button that was clicked are absent from the Request. In otherwords Request["next"] and Request["prev"] are always null. I looked in to the JavaScript in Microsoft.MvcAjax.js and it looks like the function Sys_Mvc_MvcHelpers$_serializeForm completely skips over the inputs that are of type 'submit'. This doesn't seem logical at all. How else can you find out what button has been clicked? It looks like a bug to me. Is there any logical reason to skip these form parameters?

• Advice for Windows XP Scripting, WSH versus PowerShell

  After much experience scripting in the Unix/Linux open-source world, using languages such as Bourne Shell, Perl, Python, and Ruby, I now find myself needing to do some Windows XP admin scripting. It appears that the legacy environment is Windows Script Host (WSH), which can use various scripting languages, but the primary language is VBScript, and is based on COM objects. However, the future appears to be Windows PowerShell, which is based on .NET. I haven't done Basic since Applesoft in the 70s, so I'm not keen on learning VBScript, although I did learn enough to write a small script to mount network drives. If I'm going to spend time to really learn this, I'm leaning towards investing my time in the .NET PowerShell environment, if it truly is the future. I did some C# Windows Forms programming a couple of years ago, so I have some exposure to .NET, which also makes PowerShell attractive. Understanding that no one has a crystal ball to predict the future of Microsoft, I would like hear from anyone who is a PowerShell user and thinks it's worthwhile, or if there is anyone that knows of serious drawbacks to PowerShell, and recommends that I stay away from it. Update: I ended up using WSH/VBScript for a particular script that I am installing as a startup script on user's Windows XP workstations. All I have to do is copy it to their Startup folder, and I'm done. However, I only learned enough WSH to accomplish this one job. I am glad to see that PowerShell is the future, and when I have more complicated scripting tasks, I'll to turn PowerShell.

• SQL Compact error: Unable to load DLL 'sqlceme35.dll'. The specified module could not be found

  Hi - I'm developing a Winforms application using Visual Studio 2008 C# that uses a SQL compact 3.5 database on the client. The client will most likely be 32 bit XP or Vista machines. I'm using a standard Windows Installer project that creates an msi file and setup.exe to install the app on a client machine. I'm new to SQL compact so I haven't had to distribute a client database like this before now. When I run the setup.exe (on new Windows XP 32 bit with SP2 and IE 7) it installs fine but when I run the app I get the error below: Unable to load DLL 'sqlceme35.dll'. The specified module could not be found I spent a few hours searching this error already but all I can find are issues relating to installing on 64 bit Windows, none relating to normal 32 bit that I'm using. The install app copies the all the dependant files that it found into the specified install directory, including the System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll file (assembly version 3.5.1.0). The database file is in a directory called 'data' off the application directory, and the connection string for it is <add name="Tickets.ieOutlet.Properties.Settings.TicketsLocalConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=|DataDirectory|\data\TicketsLocal.sdf" providerName="Microsoft.SqlServerCe.Client.3.5" /> Some questions I have: should the app be able to find the dll if it's in the same directory i.e. local to the app, or do I need to install it in the GAC? (If so cam I use the Windows Installer to install a dll in the GAC?) is there anything else I need to distribute with the app in order to use a Sql Compact database? there are other dlls also such as MS interop for exporting data to Excel on the client. Do these need to be installed in the GAC or will locating them in the application directory suffice? TIA, Ciaran.

• One Model to Rule Them All - VS2010 UML, ADO.NET Entity Data Model, and T4

  I worked on a fairly large project a while back where we modeled the classes in Enterprise Architect and generated the (partial) POCO classes (complete with model-driven business rule validations), persistence (NHibernate mapping file) and DDL. Based on certain model attributes we could flag alternate generation strategies or indicate that a particular portion would be entirely hand-coded. There was a good deal of initial investment, but it paid large dividends over the lifetime of a 15 developer, 3 year project. I'm investigating doing something similar with the current Microsoft technology stack. The place I'm stuck is that class modeling is done with the VS 2010 UML tools, but logical data modeling is done with Entity Data Modeler. Is it a reasonable path to use VS 2010 UML as the "single source of truth" and code generate the edmx files based on the class model? That's the inverse of the common path to create the entity model and use a POCO generator to generate classes. However, a good class model can be used to generate much more than just the properties so I tend to view it as a better choice than the entity model.

• Access VBA sub with form as parameter doesn't alter the form

  I have a Microsoft Access 2003 file with various tables of data. Each table also has a duplicate of it, with the name '[original table name]_working'. Depending on the user's choices in the switchboard, the form the user choose to view must switch its recordsource table to the working table. I refactored the relevant code to do such a thing into the following function today: Public Sub SetFormToWorking(ByRef frm As Form) With frm .RecordSource = rst![Argument] & "_working" .Requery Dim itm As Variant For Each itm In .Controls If TypeOf itm Is subForm Then With Item Dim childFields As Variant, masterFields As Variant childFields = .LinkChildFields masterFields = .LinkMasterFields .Form.RecordSource = .Form.RecordSource & "_working" .LinkChildFields = childFields .LinkMasterFields = masterFields .Form.Requery End With End If Next End With End Sub The lines of code that call the function look like this: SetFormToWorking Forms(rst![Argument]) and SetFormToWorking Forms(cmbTblList) For some reason, the above function doesn't change the recordsource for the form. I added the 'ByRef' keyword to the parameter just to be certain that it was passing by reference, but no dice. Hopefully someone here can tell me what I've done wrong?

  I've got two computers in a LAN behind a wireless router. • According to MSDN ReadFile() Win32 function may incorrectly report read operation completion. When?

  The MSDN states in its description of ReadFile() function (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa365467%28VS.85%29.aspx): “If hFile is opened with FILE_FLAG_OVERLAPPED, the lpOverlapped parameter must point to a valid and unique OVERLAPPED structure, otherwise the function can incorrectly report that the read operation is complete.” I have some applications that are violating the above recommendation and I would like to know the severity of the problem. I mean the program uses named pipe that has been created with FILE_FLAG_OVERLAPPED, but it reads from it using the following call: ReadFile(handle, &buf, n, &n_read, NULL); That means it passes NULL as the lpOverlapped parameter. That call should not work correctly in some circumstances according to documentation. I have spent a lot of time trying to reproduce the problem, but I was unable to! I always got all data in right place at right time. I was testing only Named Pipes though. Would anybody know when can I expect that ReadFile() will incorrectly return and report successful completion even the data are not yet in the buffer? What would have to happen in order to reproduce the problem? Does it happen with files, pipes, sockets, consoles, or other devices? Do I have to use particular version of OS? Or particular version of reading (like register the handle to I/O completion port)? Or particular synchronization of reading and writing processes/threads? Or when would that fail?   This is for a tic tac toe game. I need help making a check statement to see if all the controls' Texts are non-blank, and if they are, you have a draw (if someone had won the previous code would have discovered that). • Cisco ASA: How to route PPPoE-assigned subnet?

  We've just received a fiber uplink, and I'm trying to configure our Cisco ASA 5505 to properly use it. The provider requires us to connect via PPPoE, and I managed to configure the ASA as a PPPoE client and establish a connection. The ASA is assigned an IP address by PPPoE, and I can ping out from the ASA to the internet, but I should have access to an entire /28 subnet. I can't figure out how to get that subnet configured on the ASA, so that I can route or NAT the available public addresses to various internal hosts. My assigned range is: 188.xx.xx.176/28 The address I get via PPPoE is 188.xx.xx.177/32, which according to our provider is our Default Gateway address. They claim the subnet is correctly routed to us on their side. How does the ASA know which range it is responsible for on the Fiber interface? How do I use the addresses from my range? To clarify my config; The ASA is currently configured to default-route to our ADSL uplink on port Ethernet0/0 (interface vlan2, nicknamed Outside). The fiber is connected to port Ethernet0/2 (interface vlan50, nicknamed Fiber) so I can configure and test it before making it the default route. Once I'm clear on how to set it all up, I'll fully replace the Outside interface with Fiber. • Invalid security validation exception inside a SharePoint workflow

  I'm having a strange security problem with a SharePoint workflow. Particular calls seem to result in the following exception: Microsoft.SharePoint.SPException: The security validation for this page is invalid. I've come across this error before and the simple fix is web.AllowUnsafeUpdates = true; ... web.AllowUnsafeUpdates = false; However I've never once encountered this problem inside a workflow before since a workflow runs as system. I first got this error in a code activity where I set the value of a column on the list item. Wrapping the item.Update in AllowUnsafeUpdates fixed it. After the code activity I have a CreateTask activity. This also causes the same error but only after running the code inside the activity's MethodInvoking. In both cases there's a SPListItem.UpdateItem involved within the stack trace. This call is failing a security check. I don't know anything about how this check works so I don't know where to look next. This is a strange one, because this SharePoint dev machine has been working fine for some time. No other projects or workflows exhibit this behaviour so that rules out an installation problem. There's just something about this particular workflow. [UPDATE] I've gotten around the issue by just creating a new project and building it up again. I still have the broken one and I'd still like to figure out the problem with it. I'd appreciate any suggestions of what it might be.

• Browser Based Streaming Video/Audio (not progressive download)

  Hello, I am trying to understand conceptually the best way to deliver real streaming audio and video content. I would want it to be consumed with a web browser, utilizing the least amount of proprietary technology. I wouldn't be serving static files and using progressive download, this would be real audio streams being captured live. How does one broadcast a stream that will be reasonably in sync with the source? What kind of protocol is suitable? Edit: In research I've found that there are a few protocols: RTSP, HTTP Streaming, RTMP, and RTP. HTTP streaming is somewhat unsuitable if you are streaming a live performance/communication of some kind because it relies on TCP (as its HTTP based) and you don't lose packets. In a low bandwidth situation, the client can get significantly behind in playback. ref RTMP is a proprietary technology, requiring flash media server. Crap on that. The reason I looked at flash is because they are extremely flexible as far as user experience goes. SoundManager2 provides an excellent javascript interface for playing media with flash. This is what I would look for in a client application. RTSP/RTP is what Microsoft switched to using, deprecating their MMS protocol. RTSP is the control protocol. Its similar to HTTP with a few distinct difference -- server can also talk to the client, and there are additional commands, like PAUSE. Its also a stateful protocol, which is maintained with a session id. RTP is the protocol for delivering the payload (encoded audio or video). There are a few open sourced projects, one of them being supported by apple here. It seems like this might do what I want it to, and it looks like quite a few players support it. • Detecting ClearType-optimized fonts

  Question: Is there a way to check if a given font is one of Microsoft's ClearType-optimized fonts? I guess I could simply hard-code the list of font names, since it's a relatively short list, but that seems a bit ugly. Would the font names be the same regardless of Windows' locale and language settings? Background: PuTTY looks really ugly with bold, ClearType-enabled, Consolas text. So it seems like an appropriate fix would be to detect ClearType-optimized fonts and try and create the bold versions of those fonts using the same width and height as the initial CreateFont call.

  I'm trying to print out raw ascii data to a thermal printer. I do this by using this code example: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322091 but my printer prints always only one character and this not until I press the form feed button. If I print something with notepad the printer will do a form feed automatically but without printing any text. The printer is connected via usb over a lpt2usb adapter and Windows 7 uses the "Generic - Generic / Text Only" driver. Anyone knows what is going wrong? How is it possible to print some words and do some form feeds? Are there some control characters I have to send? And if yes: How do I send them? I guess the problem in the code comes from row.ID that is still -1 after the first Update() call. The Insert is successful and in the database the row has a valid value of ID. How can I get that ID so that I can continue with the second Update call? Update: IT looks like this could have been done automatically using this setting. However according to the answer on msdn social, OLEDB drivers do not support this feature. Not sure where to go from here, use something else than oledb? Update: Tried SQLCompact but discovered that it had the same limitation, it does not support multiple statements. Final question: is there any simple(single file based) database that would allow you to get the values of a inserted row.

• Asp.net MVC 2, MvcContrib, and a base controller with redirect actions

  I've got a base controller that takes a couple generics, nothing overly fancy. public class SystemBaseController<TForm, TFormViewModel> : Controller where TForm : class, IForm where TFormViewModel : class, IViewModel ok, no big deal. I have a method "CompleteForm" that takes in the viewModel, looks kinda like this ... public ActionResult CompleteForm(TFormViewModel viewModel) { //does some stuff return this.RedirectToAction(c => c.FormInfo(viewModel)); } Problem is, the controller that inherits this, like so public class SalesFormController : SystemBaseController<SalesForm, SalesViewModel> { } I end up getting a error from MvcContrib - Controller name must end in 'Controller' at this point ... public RedirectToRouteResult(Expression<Action<T>> expression) : this(expression, expr => Microsoft.Web.Mvc.Internal.ExpressionHelper.GetRouteValuesFromExpression(expr)) {} The expression that's passed in is correct (SystemBaseController blahblah) but I'm not sure why its 1.) saying there's no controller at the end, and 2.) if I pull out everything into the controller (out of the base), works just fine. Do I need to write or setup some kind of action filter of my own or what am I missing?
