• Is there anyway to configure Google account for Windows 8 Sync?

  Recently upgraded to Windows 8. The problem is a lot of Sync features requires Microsoft account to linked. Even though I have one, I don't want to spare one for Sync purpose. Additionally, Google-Chrome's sync feature is absolutely charming. So I prefer Google for storing my data. So, 1) Is there anyway to replace Microsoft Sync with other accounts by patching or modifying any byte? 2) I want to replace Maps, Weather, and all possible apps with Google. I've see Mail can be done. What are the all other possible Metro apps?

• SBS 2003 boot stalls at acpitabl.dat

  I have a SBS 2003 server running for 3 year without any problems, and few days ago it freezes during the boot. System is using two 500 Gb drives in RAID1 (Intel Matrix 7.5) After trying to load in safe mode, boot stops on acpitabl.dat. First idea was that there is a problem with RAID altough disk status was OK, and RAID status was Rebuild. I tried to boot with each drive, and one gives me the same problem, and the other drive is failing to load. Took both drives out, and checked it on a different machine. One drive is dead, other is without any problems. Returned the good drive back in SBS 2003 with changed status to Degraded, but the problem is still the same. I also have a clean SBS 2003 copy installed on this drive (previous installation), which loads smooth and quick. So, I believe the main problem is this installed version of SBS 2003. Did not make any hardware changes, did not make any updates (not sure about any automatic windows updates lately). Since there are tons posts about this problem, and no clear solution, I am trying to figure how to repair SBS 2003 installation, since there are some installed programs on this installation which I cannot re-install without additional issues.

• Kanji characters appear as boxes

  i'm having trouble with the display of japanese characters on Windows 8 Pro (English, 64-bit, updated regularly). They appear as boxes (picture) in windows explorer, windows menus (even in the language settings of control panel), iTunes and nearly everywhere else, besides web browsers. I was using windows 7 until now, and it didn't have any of these problems, and i'm using the same applications now, as i was using in windows 7. Sometimes (!) when i restart the machine the problem goes away, but that isn't a real solution. What i've tried so far: added japanese language to windows of course installed/uninstalled/reinstalled japanase language pack (didn't have any impact though) i've read in one of these superuser topics a possible solution, when i had to create a txt file on the desktop with a kanji in the filename - that also didn't work (but i honestly hope that hacking and tweaking an operation system released in 2012 can't be the solution to display kanjis..) Please give me any ideas, i'm a bit hopeless here, and don't want to spend my life installing operation systems..

• How can I share a Windows 7 library with anonymous access without using a Homegroup?

  The "homegroup" feature is useless, because it requires a password, and therefore doesn't support anonymous, no-hassle access to shares from devices such as my Sony Bravia TV and non-Windows7 machines. So I turned off homegroup and reverted to the standard shared folders protocol. I'd like to share my Music "Library", so I can play files from my TV through the Surround Sound System, but there seems to be no option to share a library folder other than through a homegroup. I don't want to have to individually share the folders that belong to the library, because that would defeat the purposes of the library, which is to manage which folders are included in the library while also providing an easily accessible view of them all at once. Does anyone know how to share a Windows 7 library without that useless homegroup feature?

• Should I disable write caching on my Windows 2008 VM?

  I have a Windows Server 2008 x64 Standard virtual machine that runs on a machine with a hardware RAID controller, a Perc 6/i, which has a battery on-board. Doing everything I can for additional performance, I think I should disable this. Is this very dangerous though? My understand is that Battery Backed Write Caching gives a performance boost to the host OS, telling it the write was complete when they are still sitting in flash waiting to be written. However, I can't see how it would be detrimental to performance, but is there a gain (even if marginal) to enabling it / disabling it? P.s. There machine has a backup power. • WinPE, Startnet.CMD and passing variables to second batch file not working

  I don't know scripting or PowerShell (yes I need to learn something). I'm not an expert batch file maker either. I have a WinPE flash drive which I used to deploy OS images. I have the WIM, drivers and anything needed else outside the WinPE environment to ensure that Updates, changes are easier for me to make. I use the "STARTNET.CMD" batch file which is part of the WinPE. The reason to go through the letter drives is that the WinPE always gets the X letter drive assigned. The flash drive itself can receive a random letter which always changes. My deployment menu is located on the flash drive it self and not inside the WinPE. This is so that if I need to make a change I don't have to re-do the WinPE. I am able to locate the "menu.bat" batch file and launch it. I use a variable to capture the letter drive. I call the second batch file named "menu.bat" and pass the variable to it. When the second batch file loads, I believe that I am calling the variable correctly. If I break out of the batch file I can echo the variable and see the expected reply. The issue is that I can't use the variable to work with anything on the second batch file. In my test, I can get this to work over and over. When it runs from the real USB flash drive it does not work. I removed comments from the second batch file to make it smaller. My issue is that files below all get a message stating that the system cannot find the path specified.   I've bought a new optical drive. It's a Samsung SH-S223C with SATA connection. Since it is OEM with no box, no cable came with it, so I need two cables now. Since I have an extra SATA power cable, it's OK, but I have to buy the data cable. What type of cable should I buy? If you please give a picture of it besides its type as well, I'll be happy. My motherboard is GigaByte P43-ES3G. TIA.

• Beeping Hard Disk - Seagate 250GB Momentus 5400.6

  I have been trying to repair a laptop that simply beeps instead of booting. After taking it apart I have now realised that it is the hard disk beeping. I know that sound strange but I guarantee that is what it is! (Currently powered on it's own with a Sata Mains lead). The beeping is slightly faster than one per second there is a link to a recording below: http://www.pezcuckow.com/files/BeepingHardDisk.m4a This recording was made resting the mic on the hard disk while it was sat on a table on it's own, there are no speakers anywhere near, the sound is coming from the hard disk. Here is an ex of a filter i'm trying to recreate: Apply this rule after the message arrives Where the From line contains '[email protected]' or '[email protected]' or 'Programa TAM Fidelidade' and Where the message body contains 'esteja visualizando' and 'por ser cadastrado no Programa TAM Fidelidade' Move it to the Deleted items folder and Stop processing more rules In Thunderbird I can´t combine a list of "or"s with some "and"s, because it only allows you to select "message matches ALL of the criteria below" or "ANY of the below". Am I missing something or it really is very limited?

  From the official Microsoft docs: Detecting the Idle State The Task Scheduler service will verify that the computer is in an idle state every 15 minutes. The computer is considered idle if all the processors and all the disks were idle for more than 90% of the past 15 minutes and if there is no keyboard or mouse input during this period of time. Besides, any presentation type application that sets the ES_DISPLAY_REQUIRED flag will make Task Scheduler to not consider the system as being idle. In Windows 7, Task Scheduler considers a processor as idle even when low priority threads (thread priority < normal) execute. Is there any way to change the time to less than 15 minutes minutes? Am I assuming this hard-coded and impossible? My Google-fu has eluded me so far and I found nothing, but wanted to check here before giving up.

  Trying to use a SATA II hard drive on toshiba satellite notebook. The hard drive has vista installed on it from another notebook. After inserting the hard drive, the boot starts.. shows "Microsoft windows" the progress bar, and reboots, in a loop. The existing hard drive is SATA with xp on it. The replacement one is SATA II with vista on it. I wanna troubleshoot. But, don't know where to start. Any help is much appreciated!!

  Ever since I reformatted my laptop, it just hasn't been the same. Before reformatting I noticed that if it was in standby for around 24 hours, it would automatically wake up and go into hibernation. I think that's a pretty cool feature and I didn't mind it. But lately, it's been waiting only a few hours (maybe 3-6; I haven't really timed it or paid enough attention) before waking up from standby and going into hibernation. There have been a few instances where this has been bothersome, and I'd like to change it back to a nice long wait time. Where is this setting? What setting in Windows controls the time before the computer wakes up from standby and goes into hibernation?

  It's not that I'm trying to make it more like 7. That's not the problem. My problem is that whenever I click the Google Chrome icon on my taskbar or even the desktop, Windows brings up this screen-spanning message box saying that my resolution is too low to launch run Google Chrome, and to set my computer to a higher resolution. (I can't.) It then continues to open Chrome correctly after I hit close. This also happens when I click a link in an external program like skype or psi.

  When Debian (wheezy testing version) is loading, at a certain point appears a strange message: udevd[336] timeout usb_id--export /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.0/usb1/1-1/1-2.2/1-1.2:1.0 video4linux/ [502] after this message, start another message that loops for 120 secs: udevd[336] killing /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.0/usb1/1-1/1-2.2/1-1.2:1.0 video4linux/ [502] When the loop finish, Debian start normally and nothing seems to be "broken"! I also killed the loop with CTRL-C to break the loop and the system doesn't give any problem. Does anyone know a possible answer?

I've used VMware Workstation to create a powerful Windows Server 2008 within my PC and I want to attach it to my Network Switch through the same PC where I am hosting it. I want to use it almost like a physical server with an IP address and everything so that I can connect from one Pc to the Server directly or my applications can connect to Server straight with the IP address. • How do you check Driver Verifier logs on Windows 7 after catching a faulty driver?

  I kept getting BSODs on a clean install of Windows 7 (plus updates), so I decided to run Driver Verifier. I had to select all drivers, since it didn't catch the culprit when I didn't include Microsoft drivers. I know it is not a hardware problem since everything is working fine on Linux and memtest86+ is not reporting any errors in the RAM (8 GB). This time, it caught the faulty driver and gave me a BSOD telling me so. Using WhoCrashed, I could verify what was the last error message with the parameters and the source. Yet, the source is always the kernel (ntoskrnl.exe) and the bugcheck this time was 0xC4 (0x85, 0xFFFFF9804429AFC0, 0x2, 0x11B948). After searching on the web, I found out "the driver called MmMapLockedPages without having locked down the MDL pages." As I am not developing any driver, this is of no use to me. However, I would like to know which driver caused Driver Verifier to trigger an alert, so I can either disable it, or rollback to a previous version in order not to get crashes anymore.

• Why does DBAN crash on my HDDs?

  I am using DBAN to erase HDD. DBAN is loaded from a CD and BIOS Boot order has been set to favour CD drive. On starting laptop, system boots from CD and DBAN interface can be seen. DBAN detects two storage devices, HDD and the SD Card. My HDD IS 320GB but DBAN says 298GB. It erases the SD card but when i try to erase HDD, it gives following error. DBAN finished with non-fatal errors. *ERROR /dev/sdb (process crash) *ERROR /dev/sda (process crash)

We have our (internal, domain limited) Root CA installed. I would like to take the Root CA offline to secure storage but before that I'd like to setup an intermediate CA which can take over actual live, online (int-RA-net) functionality Can someone guide me covering: creating the intermediate CA certificate request installing the intermediate CA certificate on domain controller (certification authority role already installed with Root CA online right now) use the intermediate CA to generate a certificate (any use certificate, just for demonstration purposes) Obviously this certification chain would be invalid on computers outside our domain (self trusted root - our root certificate is NOT from common 3rd parties). This last point is NOT a problem.

• How do you enable multi-core virtualization in Windows 8 Pro?

  I've just got a new Dell Vostro 470 with a quad core (8 threads) i7 3770 and I'm trying to run virtual machines on it, which works fine, except if I want to assign multiple cores to a VM. I've checked the bios which states Intel Virtualization Technology [Enabled], but both Hyper-V and VirtualBox will only allow me to assign a single core. If I run the Intel Processor Identification Utility on the host OS it tells me that Intel Virtualization Technology isn't supported by the processor, but according to the Intel website, it is. So whats going on? Have Dell clipped the i7's wings? Is there some config in Windows I need to change?

  I'm trying to get a laptop video signal to my really old television, so that I can play movies on it. But the TV won't accept the video signal. I found the manual online, and apparently the output has to be 480i. But I don't know how to do that -- Windows 7 will only let me set the resolution down to 800x600. Even if I get it down to 640x480- is that 480i or 480p? How do I tell the difference? How do I switch between them? How do I get the resolution down so low in the first place?

• Currently well suited SATA2-SSDs for Laptop usage

  I am looking for a solid state drive for my laptop. My dillemma: I have been waiting for the new Intel SSDs since Q3/2010, as I've heard they should be better and cheaper, due to lower memory manufacturing costs. Now it looks like the new Intel drives are very fast, but still expensive. I would still buy one of them if I could benefit from the full speed. My hardware only has a SATA-2 port though. Thus, my question: Is it worthwhile to buy one of those new Intel SSDs made for SATA-3 if I won't be able to use the full speed? Are there any other promising new SSDs that will be released soon? (Inside the next 1-2 months) If I wouldn't make a good deal buying the newer, faster drives, what drives can you recommend? I don't consider this question subjective, as I am mainly looking for answers concerning the SATA-2/SATA-3 conflict.

• SAS instead of SATA 2 for my hard drives?

  I am building a new system soon, I will have multiple 1-2tb hard drives for storage in it. I only have experience uasing the sataII drives but I saw somewhere that I should be using something like SAS? I read that if I were going to have 20 drives that I could use 4 SAS cables vs 20 SATA cables. Can someone help me understand this better? If it were only 4 cables then how would 20 drives hook up? Also can a regualr sata2 drive hook up to that?

  I want to remove directories of the following format: C:\Program Files\FogBugz\Plugins\cache\[email protected]_NN NN is a number, so I want to use a wildcard (this is part of a post-build step in Visual Studio). The problem is that I need to combine quotes around the path name (for the space in Program Files) with a wildcard to match the end of the path. I already found out that rd is the remove command that accepts wildcards, but where do I put the quotes? I have tried no ending quote (works for dir), ...example.com*", ...example.com"*, ...example.com_??", ...cache\"[email protected]*, ...cache"\[email protected]*, but none of them work. (How many commands to remove a file/directory are there in Windows anyway? And why do they all differ in capabilities?)
