  I'm developping a C application on Windows 7 64 bits, and each time it crashes I get the following dialog: I would prefer something more "old school" with the complete error dumped in the console. Something like > HelloWorld The application has crashed in somedll.dll for some Horrible C reason.   I have a Google Drive spreadsheet with a single column that holds string values (Twitter screen names) such as "user1", "user1", "UserX", and I would like to count those values so that I can easily craft a bar chart out of it. So the result should be value occurrence ----------------------- user1 2 UserX 1 ... .... Please note, I only want to look for whole words, and not part words. EG, the words 'on' and 'one' appears in the word 'money' - I would not count this (eg, only the word money is counted). Hope that is clear enough. What formula should I use?

I thought about adding two SSD drive for a OS. other 15*(12 SATA & 3 SSD) drives i want to build with aufs XFS and ethernet 4GB/sec network. But I'm confused a little. S5520HCR board supports 6, SATA/300, RAID: 0, 1, 10, Intel ICH10R. Does it mean i can use SATAIII HDD? I'm planing on buying SEAGATE SV35 Series (3.5, 3??, 64??, SATA III-600). also my Chassis supports up-to 16 sata and the motherboard only 6 what kind of sata controller should i use? What's better in terms of performance 1366 or 2011 socket? • How to keep TightVNC client on Windows XP alive when connected to OS X?

  I'm using TightVNC on my Windows XP workstations to connect to a remote OS X box (10.5.x) using OS X's VNC support. I've noticed that the TightVNC will become unresponsive after a period of inactivity. Is this a common issue? Restarting TightVNC solves the problem, but can be a bit annoying. Is there a solution to this? I don't suppose copy & paste between the two systems can be made to work?

My users can use autocomplete when they are on other websites so I think it is a server setting in this case. How do I turn autocomplete on for a server running Windows Server 2008?   Is there a way to prevent Windows Media Player from connecting to the internet and MS using the hosts file or other methods? Edit: (Nov 20 2009 at 19:16) I have both VLC and MPC and I do use them. However I am currently using WMP to organize all my music and I hate that WMP is always making outgoing connections. I just tried TCPView and can't believe how many connections WMP makes when you first launch it. I have even disabled everything in its options that relates to connecting to internet. Could any of you recommend a good media player thats also good for organizing your music library like WMP, and doesnt connect to the internet? Preferably one that a WMP user would actually like as much as WMP. The reason I use WMP is because I like its interface, the way its setup and how it looks.

• Is an I/O benchmark made for hardware an accurate assessment of a Windows VM's performance under vSphere 5?

  We support an enterprise application running on Windows Server 2008 R2. One of our customers has chosen to install to VMWare, and what I'm finding is that the VM's are relatively slow compared to hardware. Our product development team has advised that many VMs appear to run particularly slow on I/O benchmarks, which impact performance in production. I've tried the AttoSoft I/O benchmark and find that for smaller I/O blocks (1-32K) the VM I'm looking at is 25x slower than hardware and for larger I/O blocks (1-8MB) it's 10x slower. Is this a fair benchmark? If not, any suggestions for a fair test?

  Zune is able to accept pretty much every media format under the sun, or at least can once someone's installed something like the KLite Codec Pack. However, it does do conversion on your behalf to a more supported format when you try to sync the contents over the Windows Phone. I'd like to not have to wait for the really slow process of doing the conversion... how do I know which media format to download? (For example, there are 5 media formats available for each of the MIX sessions....)

• Windows 7: Use VirtualStore as user for own benefit?

  I've researched a bit and came to the understanding that VirtualStore is part of the new UAC feature in Vista/W7 which is the file system part of the transparent data redirection and redirects write access to folders like program files to C:\User\<username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ in lack of applications respecting the LUA principles. Now I'm interested if that kind of transparent redirection can also be used as a power to the user. Here's an example which comes to my mind: I install any kind of software to e.g. D:\Whatever\ThisAndThisApp\ and I set up things that, after initial installation, any write access to this folder is transparently redirected to e.g. D:\MyOwnVirtualStore\Whatever\ThisAndThisApp\file_only_writable_here.txt. Is this thinking too far or can I actually use that power of VirtualStore as a user on Windows 7? I'm using the Professional version of that matters.

• What does "Windows is not a real-time operating system" mean?

  I came across an application called LatencyMon, that apparently does latency monitoring. I have always understood the more of a load you put on the processor, the less responsive, or more latent, the system becomes. However, in the second section of the LatencyMon page, the first sentence says, "Windows is not a real-time operating system". That got me thinking. I mean, is this any different from any other operatiing system like linux, unix, or OS X? Are there any "Real-Time" operating systems? Or is the merely a marketing scheme to get you to buy their product? EDIT: Also, are there any examples of RTOS's out there?

• web sites leaking memory? IIS 7.5 Windows server 2008 R2

  I have several web sites on my windows 2008 server that have been working flawlessly for over a year. Just a few days ago I ran into an issue where my server stopped serving up pages on some of these sites for no apparent reason. I dug into it a little more today and I see that some of my sites (they're all asp.net mvc 3.0 sites), are consuming over 460MB of memory. Like I said, this just started the other day after a very long period of time of no issues at all. I have two questions: 1) is there a way to throttle how much memory is consumed by the w3wp process before I can force it to restart (restart the app pool for a particular site) so that it doesn't keep hogging all of the memory? 2) any ideas what could have caused this to start happening?

• Windows CE Remote Kernel Tracker - gathering data in one (more) file during a log period of time

  I'm using the "Windows CE Kernel Tracker" tool to gather data from my embedded device. This is working fine for short period of time. It seems that the tool is getting data in memory and not on disk. I'm wondering if there is a way to take the data from the device and log it in one or more file on my development computer. This could be useful for long time test period : for instance, one night or one entire day. Any ideas? p.s. I don't want to log on to the device, I want to log on my development PC.

  I would like to find some simple scan software for a windows machine that can scan to pdf, but I would like it to do batch or multiple pages into one big pdf. I saw a couple questions on scan to pdf software, but did not see anything talking about scanning to large multiple page pdf's. EDIT: I am surprised there are not more options out there. Do many of the scanners/all in one devices come with included software that perform this function? EDIT 2: I tried Scan2PDF and it locked up on me multiple times in the middle of the scan job and then gave me non-english error messages. Otherwise, I liked how simple the app was, just select number of pages and hit ok. Any other success stories out there?

  How are cached Active Directory domain credentials stored on a Windows client? Are they stored in the local SAM database, thus making them susceptible to the same rainbow table attacks that local user accounts are susceptible to, or are they stored differently? Note, that I do realize that they are salted and hashed, so as not to be stored in plain-text, but are they hashed in the same way as local accounts and are they stored in the same location? I realize that at a minimum they're be susceptible to a brute force attack, but that's a much better situation than being vulnerable to rainbow tables in the event of a stolen machine.

• Strange Windows Server 2008 R2 (FTP Server) Error - Caused by a specific combination of characters in the filename of uploaded file

  We are running Windows Server 2008 R2, which is setup to be a FTP server. Everything seemed to be working fine until one our our cilents started complaining about their uploads being halted with the message "Connection with server reset". Further diagnosis revealed that a specific combination of characters in the filename will cause a repeatable error. I am hoping that a form expert can confirm the error or perhaps provide a solution. This is an example filename that will always cause the error: REPORT_FILED_000000001 (extension does not matter) Any help would be greatly appreciated! We need files named like this to work properly with our FTP server.

• How do I make my play/pause keyboard button work correctly in iTunes 10 on Windows?

  First and foremost, I have mmKeys installed correctly. My iTunes works almost perfect while minimized to the tray. My problem is with the play/pause button on my Wireless Comfort Keyboard 5000. When iTunes does not have focus (like it's minimized, or if it isn't the application I'm active in, like right now while typing this) the play pause button toggles twice. So, I'll push the pause button - and the song that is playing will pause, but a split second later will start up again. If the song is paused, and I push play, the song will immediately pause again. In order to get the key to work correctly, I must give iTunes focus, and then push the button. Inside the physical path I created an index.htm that has: <html> <body>Test</body> </html> But I got the following error: "The page cannot be found". When I put the same index file inside the Web Site Default physical path, it works. I configured the new web site with the link above using the IP configuration and without a Host Header.' What should I do to troubleshoot this or is there an obvious configuration error?

  I have Windows 7 64 bit running on my laptop with Tomcat 7 installed to run my java programs using Eclipse. Now I need to be working with PHP and as I went to install it, I read you need to install Apache Web Server first, before installing PHP. Then I read where you can run PHP under Tomcat or run PHP on Apache Web Server while still using Tomcat, if you reset the default port on one of them as Tomcat and Apache Web Server would use the same ports by default. What is the best way to do this? I don't want to was lots of time getting stuck on configuration issues.

• How can I password-protect a Mac shared folder on a Windows workgroup?

  We have a Mac-mini running 10.5.8 which already acts as a fileserver for our simple Windows (mixed XP/Vista) workgroup. The Mac-mini is on the same workgroup and the files are shared via SMB, FTP, and AFP. Basic file-sharing is working, and has been for some time. We'd now like to add an additional directory/share which can be secured by a password so that only a small number on the network have access. Is this possible? I've already tried creating the additional folder on the mac system, adding it to the shared folders, and limiting it to a specific "shared user", however it's not possible to log-in from an XP machine. Adding a sub-directory to the currently working share and giving limiting it's access to the shared user doesn't work either.

• Where and how does Kindle Cloud Reader store downloaded books, on a Windows 7 system?

  I use Firefox and sometimes Chrome, on Windows 7. Amazon's in-browser Kindle Cloud Reader lets you "download" books for local/offline viewing. Where are these stored, given my OS+browser combination? I've searched the Users subdirectory for my user, and could not find a relevant (separate) file in there, specifically not in the Firefox and Chrome profile directories. To clarify, the files are obviously not downloaded as-is and are stored in some potentially-obfuscated format, possibly in the browser's local store and possibly elsewhere. The question is, where and how exactly? (This was the first of this question, but wasn't answered there since it was not the main focus of the question.)

• Resized NTFS partition, now it wont mount.

  I have had a 1.5TB drive used as an external for 6 months or so, then I decided to put it in my linux server for network storage. ntfs was being crazy inefficient so I wanted to change the filesystem to ext4. I used the ntfsresize command to reduce the partition to 650GB and that took abour 2 hours, then I deleted all of the entries in fstab like a guide told me too and created a new one the size of the ntfs partition, or, 650GB. after I modified fstab the ntfs partition would no longer mount and when plugging it in to windows it says "This Hard Drive needs to be formatted". any ideas on how I can recover the data off of the drive? I have 600GB of free space on a different drive so I just need some way of copying them off.

• Identify what's painting the empty space in my Windows notification area?

  I have an "icon" in my Windows (XP, if it matters) notification area (by the clock) which renders no image, but rather an empty square space (no borders -- nothing rendered at all in the space where you'd expect an icon). Upon mousing over this space, it immediately collapses (disappears), preventing me from gathering any information about it. I'm assuming the collapse (on mouseover) indicates the process is no longer running. How can I learn what process is painting this "void" in my notification area? I don't control the workstation, so I can't control what launches when.

  I have a large set of unattended Windows XP machines who are not connected to a domain or even to each other. I am struggling to find any tools out there that I can use to deal with them in one application. I am hoping to find software that I can perhaps install a client on each machine, then have it essentially proxy out configuration information and possibly commands (install, uninstall, stop service, etc) across the whole network. The closest I've come is Nagios and its client, but it cannot be used to push files through and run commands remotely. Any suggestions?

• Using an Internal HDD as an External HDD also or an External HDD for installing SAP ?

  Is it possible and advisable to use an Internal Hard Drive as an External Hard drive also. I wanted to install SAP ECC 6 on my system which has only 250 GB but atleast 300 GB is required.I wanted to buy an External Drive first, then I heard loading SAP on an External would make it extremely slow. I'll be using it only as a beginer so even if it is a little slow i don't mind. Is it feasible to run such a big application from an External Hard disk ? So can i purchase a 500 or 1 TB Internal Hard disk and use it as an External too by fitting it with the necessary USB 3.0 Hard drive cases and cables ? or should i purchase a External and load SAP onto it ?
