• How can I find out which processes on my computer are accessing the microphone?

  After reading this interesting Lifehacker post and reading the comments on the page, one person was wondering if it would be possible to use the Physical Device Object Names of other hardware such as the microphone to find out the names of processes using that device. I tried the same approach, but so far it only seems to work for the webcam. Is there any other way I could get this to work in Process Explorer? UPDATE: The Lifehacker post was about finding out which Windows process is currently using your webcam. This is how they went about doing it: Start Device Manager (WIN+R → "devmgmt.msc" → OK) Find your webcam among the list of devices (check under Imaging Devices) Open the properties window of the device and switch to the Details tab (Right click → Properties → Details) In the dropdown menu, select Physical Device Object Name and copy the string(Right click → Copy) Download Process Explorer Make sure you have opened Process Explorer in Administrator Mode(File → Show Details for All Processes) Hit CTRL+F and enter the string you copied earlier(it should be something like \Device\000000XX) Hit the Search button and you should see a list of processes using the webcam(if there are any)

• cannot connect to sql server express from sql server standard

  ... like my title says... I cannot connect to my instance on sql server express from sql server standard... I have tried disabling firing wall and checked sqlbrowser is started but for some reason I cannnot connect to my datbase... called server_name\sqlexpress.. I have a virtual machine and a full scale MS SQL Server 2008 R2 running on it... and I have several other vm running sqlexpress. they run fine and I can connect to them using sqlexpress... but when i try to access from sqlserver... I get this error. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.   Hi, I can backup and restore databases on Microsoft SQL server Analysis Service 2008 using GUI as from Backup SSAS I want to schedule backup and restore it to another server every night. so what i did is : I scripted out the backup and restore process from the GUI. Created a new SQL server agent job in database engine and added a "Run SSAS query" step. Copied the scripts to this step. • Is it possible to get CCM Updates Schedule using Powershel or VBScript?

  I want to be able to check the CCM Updates Schedule as seen in Configuration Manager Updates tab. I've been looking around on google and I've not been able to find a consistent answer to this. I tried to create a COM object using UDA.CCMUpdatesDeployment. This allows me to successfully set the recurring schedule with SetUserDefinedSchedule method. If I try to use GetUserDefinedSchedule I only get the original values of the variables. • Disabled FRS replication on a DFS link, but the targets still list the replica set in their FRS conf

  It's been a while since I've had to deal with the wonders of FRS, so I'm doing some testing to refresh my memory. This is what I've done so far. I am stuck with FRS rather than DFS-R for the moment since not all of my link targets are running R2. Created a domain-based DFS root, hosted on 4 servers. Created a DFS link under the root, targeted at 2 servers. The shares on both servers were empty. Dropped about 500MB of data into the target folder on one server and waited for replication to complete. Added/removed/modified files on both targets and confirmed that changes are replicated within a few seconds. Deleted the contents of the target folder on 1 server and waited for the other server to replicate the deletion. All of this worked perfectly, so now I want to remove my DFS link since I only created it for testing purposes. This is where it gets weird. I'm pretty sure that in the past I've disabled replication on the DFS link and after a short amount of time each target would log an info event in the FRS event log, something along the lines of "this server is no longer a member of replica set X". I have waited about 3 hours and I haven't seen this happen. ntfrsutl ds tells me that the server is not a member of any set, which is expected because when I disable replication on the link, the AD attributes on the computer object are removed. The weird part is... ntfrsutl sets still shows me the replica set, with all the properties, etc. So it seems like the FRS-related attributes of the target server's AD object are gone, but the FRS service for some reason hasn't removed the replica set. Can anyone see what I have done wrong?

  I have some reporting services reports that talk to Analysis Services and at times they fail with the following error: An error occurred during client rendering. An error has occurred during report processing. Query execution failed for dataset 'AccountManagerAccountManager'. The connection cannot be used while an XmlReader object is open. This occurs sometimes when I change selections in the filter. It also occurs when the machine has been under heavy load and then will consistently error until SSAS is restarted. • When running PowerShell script as a scheduled task some Exchange 2010 database properties are null

  Hello, I've written a script that intends to retrieve the DatabaseSize of a database from Exchange 2010. I created a new AD user for this script to run under as a scheduled task. I gave this user admin rights to the Exchange Organization (as a last resort during my testing) and local admin rights on the Exchange machine. When I run this script manually by starting powershell (with runas /noprofile /user:domain\user powershell) everything works fine. All the database properties are available. When I run the script as a scheduled task a lot of the properties are null including the one I want: DatabaseSize. I've also tried running the script as the domain admin account with the same results. There must be something different in the two contexts but I can't figure out what it is. • Importing csv list of contacts into Exchange 2007 GAL and create Distribution Group

  Here's the situation: We have a list of about 1,000 contacts (Lawyers in the area our court serves) with name and email address. I've been asked to create an email distribution list that can be used to sent emails to all of the external users on that list. I've seen various articles using the Exchange Management Shell and the Import-csv command piped through a ForEach-Object to a New-MailContact to set up the contacts. However, Exchange Management Shell is rather unhelpful, and it isn't working. What I believe I need to do is: 1) Set up a new distribution group using the Exchange Management Console. Let's say this new distribution group (which appears in the list of Distribution Groups under Recipient Configuration) is called "FloridaBar". 2) Make sure I have a csv file of the information I want to import. 3) Open Exchange Management Shell, and enter the following command: Import-csv C:\filename.csv | ForEach-Object { New-MailContact -Name $."NameColumnName" -ExternalEmailAddress $."EmailAddressColumn" -org FloridaBar Now, creating 1,000+ contacts in active directory - I assume that shouldn't be an issue. Do I have the "-org" parm wrong? Do I need to spell out the complete organization unit name (my.domain.name/Users/FloridaBar)? Is there a better way of doing this? Thanks in advance Ken

• Windows clients unable to access Samba share on AD joined Linux box every 7 days

  The problem: Every 7 days, 2 Windows Servers are unable to access a SMB/CIFS share. It will start working after a handful of hours. The environment: OpenFiler Linux box joined to 2003 AD Domain Foreground app on Win2003 server access the SMB/CIFS share with windows credentials Another process on Win2008 access the share via SQL Server with windows credentials The Samba version on the Linux box is 3.4.5. Security is set to ADS wbinfo and getent return back expected users and groups Does not look to be a double hop issue as it's always the 2 accounts, regardless of the calling user. There is a DNS entry in both forward and reverse lookup zone for the linux box The linux box's computer object in active directory shows that it was modified around/at the same time that the two clients started failing to access the share Trying to access the share via IP works when by name does not Rebooting the Windows server takes care of it (it's production and only restarted it once) Restarting smbd, winbind, nmbd had no effect Error in samba log for the client in question: smbd/sesssetup.c:342(reply_spnego_kerberos) Failed to verify incoming ticket with error NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE! The Question: Does this look like the machine account password is changing (hence the AD object showing the updated modified date) or are the two windows clients unable to request a new ticket that works against this linux box?

For example: If I want to do a safe distribution of original music for demostration purposes I will need several requisites: 1) The music should be heard using a simple procedure like selecting the name of each song on a playlist of a mediaplayer. 2) The portable media, ussually a portable USB drive, must hide for complete and should make unaccesible the files that contain the audio data to anything but the mediaplayer, that must be in the first partition, the one that is visible. 3) Considering that´s impossible to really hide files in a non-hidden partition, a second hidden partition should be created in the USB drive and the audio data will be stored there. 4) The trick is to read the audio data files stored in the hidden partition with a mediaplayer stored in the visible partition, the media player also should be a complete standalone program and independent from any library of the operating system except of the OS audio system. 5) The hidden partition should have a copy protection scheme that could impede to do copies of the data or create working ISO images of it. I know that this description could not be technically accurate but it has a complete logic from the needs of a music producer against the problem of piracy. The philosophy that surrounds the concept is to transform a virtual object like a digital string of audio in a solid object like the analog vinyl discs are.

  I recently upgraded host to Ubuntu 9.10 with vmware server 2.0.2, i had two guest machine. One is a sme server i had several crash during a session of backup with rsync to another pc. Normal activities run regularly. The other guest is up without problem since 25 days. I have never done any type of scripting or coding before and I have been teaching myself online by learning from the technet script centre and online forums. What I am trying to accomplish is to open an excel spreadsheet get information from it (usernames and password) and then output it into the command prompt in powershell.   The setting I have an Amazon Cloudfront distribution that was originally set as secured. Objects in this distribution required a URL signing. What happened At some point, the URL singing expired and would return a 403. Since we no longer need to keep the same security level, I recently changed the setting of the cloudfront distribution and of the S3 bucket it is pointing to, both to be public. I then tried to invalidate objects in this distribution. Invalidation did not throw any errors, however the invalidation did not seem to succeed. Requests to the same cloudfront URL (with or without the query string) still return 403.   I have tried disabling firing wall and checked sqlbrowser is started but for some reason I cannnot connect to my datbase... called server_name\sqlexpress.. I have a virtual machine and a full scale MS SQL Server 2008 R2 running on it... and I have several other vm running sqlexpress. they run fine and I can connect to them using sqlexpress... but when i try to access from sqlserver... I get this error. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. • One-To-Many Powershell Scripts

  I'm trying to create a script to run as a scheduled task, which will run against multiple servers and retrieve some information. To start with, I populate the list of servers by querying AD for all servers that match a certain set of criteria, using Get-ADComputer. The problem is, the list is returned as an object, which I can't then pass to the New-PSSession list. I have tried converting it to a comma-seperated string by doing the following: foreach ($server in $serverlist) {$newlist += $server.Name + ","} but this still doesn't work. the alternative is to iterate through the list and run the various commands against each server one at a time, but my preference would be to avoid this and run them using one-to-many remoting. UPDATE: To clarify what I want to end up being able to do is using -ComputerName $serverlist, so I want $serverlist to be a string rather than an object. UPDATE 2: Thanks for all the suggestions. Between them and my original method I'm starting to wonder whether -ComputerName can accept a string variable? I've got varying degrees of success getting the list of computers converted to a comma separated string, but no matter how I do it I always get invalid network address.

  As a developer for the .NET platform, I like to "explore" a platform, framework or API by browsing through the API documentation which explains what everything is - everything is covered and when I use tools like Reflector or Object Browser then I get to know for certain what I'm working with. When I'm writing my own software I can use tools like the Object Test Bench to explore and work with my classes directly. I'm looking for something similar, but for PowerShell - and ones that avoid text-mode.   I like to have my user folder on a different drive (D:) than my OS is (C:). Reading the following post I decided to give it a try. All went quite well, untill I found out that my Windows 8 Apps won't execute anymore (other than that I didn't noticed any problems). My apps do work, while using an account that isn't moved. • Windows ACL inheritance issues for FTP server and automated tools

  I have set up Cerberus FTP server. By default, Cerberus FTP service runs under SYSTEM ACCOUNT. Also I have some console applications which run as scheduled tasks. They are running under a dedicated "Utilities" user account which has "Log on as batch job" permissions. These console applications take uploaded FTP files, process them and then move them to some dedicated archive folder. The problem is that my console apps are throwing Security exceptions when trying to acces the uploaded files. I tried to give the Full control permissions on the ftproot folder for my "Utilities" account and I have checked that "Replace all Child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" checkbox, but it affects only current files. When new files are uploaded, they again are not accessible by my "Utilities" account. I tried to go another way and put Cerberus FTP service under "Utilities" account. Then I also needed to give "Utilities" account permissions on Cerberus Data folder in ProgramData. Still no luck - after this operation, Cerberus internal SOAP web service stopped working (although everything else seems to work). I need that SOAP service to be available, so running the Cerberus FTP under "Utilities" account seems to be not an option. Unless I find out, what else do I need to set up for that "Utilities" account to stop Cerberus from complaining. I guess, Cerberus is uploading files to some temporary folder and so those files get the permissions form that folder and keep the same permissions even after moved to the ftproot. What would be the right solution for this which would grant Cerberus FTP server and the "Utilities" account minimal needed permissions to access the contents of the ftproot folder?

  What I have? I have normal web application and it has 3 site collections with name, "PDirectory". Other than this I have only Central administration web application in the farm. What I want? I want to delete that web application, "PDirectory". What problem am I facing? I am not able to delete the web application. I get below error when I try to delete it but, the site collections got deleted! • Does Active Directory on Server 2003 R2 support IPv6 subnets in Sites and Services?

  I've been experimenting with IPv6 at our organization. The domain controllers (all 2003 R2) and most of the servers (2003 R2 / 2008 / 2008 R2) have IPv6 configured. We have a subnet assigned through a tunnel provider. Currently, the only workstation that is running IPv6 is mine. (Windows 7) I have been noticing that my workstation is picking domain controllers in other sites for things like DFS, and I finally realized that I don't have the IPv6 subnets set up in Active Directory Sites and Services (ADSS). But when I try to add a IPv6 prefix in ADSS, it tells me: Windows cannot create the object 2001:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx::/64 because: The object name has bad syntax. I believe I may be using the 2008 version of the admin tools (ADSS reports version 6.1.7601.17514) so I'm wondering if maybe my 2003 R2 Active Directory schema doesn't support configuring IPv6 subnets in ADSS. Is this true? UPDATE Even with 2008 R2 schema in Active Directory, I'm having the same problem. How can I get my IPv6 subnets into Sites and Services?

Version of openldap-client (2.4.16) was older then new openldap-server (2.4.21) and the version of client has updated too. OpenLDAP-client works with postfix on this server and after all updates postfix cann't start again. The error when postfix stop|start is: /libexec/ld-elf.so.1: Shared object "libldap-2.4.so.6" not found, required by "postfix" At the category with libraries is libldap-2.4.so.7, but libldap-2.4.so.6 is removed from the server.
