• Partial-stroking / Short-stroking / Half-stroking Hard Drives?

  Could anyone here explain to me what is implied by this term? (I've seen the same thing mentioned with the 3 terms). At first when I read about it, for some reason I understood that it was some way of splitting the bytes across the platters of the disk, which sounded like a good idea and obviously doesn't make sense, because that wouldn't cut disk size in half (and disk are probably already splitting bytes across platters)... The best I've come to understand is that basically instead of creating one partition for the whole size of the disk, you create 2 partitions, and use only one of them, either the one in the "center" or the one in the "rim" of the platters, and since one of the two is faster (people didn't seem to agree on which one was faster), that makes everything better. Am I understanding this correctly? Has anyone tried this with their drives and had a good outcome? Thanks!

• Windows Server 2003- RDP functionality after removing Terminal Server temporary CALs

  I recently configured Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services for a client. The 90 day trial CAL period is about to expire, and my client has decided that he's too cheap to purchase CALs. He wants to use the 2 administrative RDP logons for remote access. Can I just uninstall Terminal Server to revert the RDP functionality back to that of the 2 administrative RDP logons, or is there something else that needs to be done? What's the best way to uninstall Terminal Services? Through Add/Remove Programs - Windows Components - uncheck Terminal Server or through the "Configure Your Server Wizard" by removing the Terminal Server role?

• Asus Eee PC 1000HE wireless woes

  Ever since I have upgraded my Asus Eee PC 1000HE from Lucid 10.04 to Precise 12.04 I have been having issues with my wireless connections. At first I had wireless dropouts: I would be able to start using wireless, but then after a few minutes the wireless would stop working even though I was still connected to the network. Lately things turned worse: while I connect to my wireless network, it just never works. I tried all sorts of solutions on offer here and in other forums but none worked. At best I got the wireless to work up until I rebooted, at which point I would get the same symptoms again: the wireless network is there, but it's not really working. By now I tried so many different "solutions" I don't know where to start describing them; I have also reinstalled 12.04 several times, enough to make me lose faith in Ubuntu. Help here looks like my last resort. For the record, my Asus Eee PC 1000HE is equipped with an Atheros wireless card. • Free Hosting control panel

  I'm in the mid of researching for one of the best hosting control panels. The server I run is Ubuntu and I have some experience with ISPConfig 2 & 3. Since I haven't explored any others available, what are the recommended ones for an Ubuntu server? I asked because I find that there seems to be some disabling and modifications required for an Ubuntu server if I need to use ispconfig which causes the server to change its actual way of running. It's quite good though, but any more recommended ones ? Something more organic? which doesn't require much breaking and changing. I'm not asking for the simple one, I don't mind going extra mile to install a powerful one but just try sticking with most Ubuntu's conventions will be an ideal one for me. And of course, if there happens to be something that meets the requirement as mentioned "Ubuntu conventions" and also simple to install at the same time, that'd be a bonus. Thanks in advance.

• How to manage a multiplayer asynchronous environment in a game

  I'm working on a game where players can setup villages, which can contain defending units. Any of these units (each on their own tiles) can be set to "campaign" which means they are no longer defending but can now be used to attack other villages. And each unit on a tile can have up to a 100 health. So far so good. Oh and it's all asynchronous so even though the server will be aware that your village is being attacked, you won't be until the attack is over. The issue I'm struggling with, is the following situation. Let's say a unit on a tile is being attacked by a player from another village. The other player see's your village and is attacking your units. You don't know this is happening though, so you set your unit to campaign and off you go to attack another village, with the unit which itself is actually being attacked by this other player. The other player stops attacking your village and leaves your unit with say a health of 1, which is then saved to the server. You however have this same unit are attacking another village with it, but now you discover that even though it started off with a 100 health, now mysteriously it only has 1... Solutions? Ideas? Edit The simplest solutions are often the best. I referred to Clash of clans below, well after a bit more digging it seems that in CoC you can only attack players that are offline! ha, that almost solves the problem. I say almost because there's still the situation where a players village could be in the process of being attacked when they come back online, still need to address that. Edit 2 A solution to the "What happens when a player is attacking your village and you come online" issue, could be the attacking player just get's kicked out of the village at that point and just get's whatever they had won up to that point, it's a bit of a fudge but it might work.

• Preventing battery from charging

  I'm running on UPS power and would like to prevent the laptop's battery from charging, to increase the amount of power available to other devices. Is there a way to do this? update The machine is a Dell Latitude D400. If people want more details, just ask. Also, I'm gathering that I need to explain my desired setup a little better. I've gotten a bunch of suggestions about taking the battery out. I'm not sure if people are suggesting to take the battery out while the machine is running — this, as I understand, is not a good idea with most laptops — or to just remove the battery altogether. The latter option is not optimal, because ideally I'd like to use the 30-60 minutes of power in the laptop battery and then switch over to UPS power. The details of the switch-over may constitute a separate question, but if I can't find a way to keep the laptop battery from charging, then removing the battery from the machine altogether may be the best way to do this. I'm not sure yet if this machine will run without a battery, but I'll check that out. Other than the laptop, the UPS is just supporting a cable modem and router and a USB hub. Again in the idealized version of this setup, all the power management changes would be automated, i.e. not require replugging anything or pressing Fn-keys. I'd like the machine to start using laptop battery power when apcupsd indicates that the UPS A/C is out, and then start using UPS power, but not charging the battery, when the battery is almost depleted.

• Battery management of a Macbook

  I bought a Macbook Pro last week. I mostly use (and plan to use) it like a desktop with an external monitor. I use the system at least 15 hours a day. Now using the coconut battery application, I figured out that the capacity has the current capacity has reduced to 98% of the design capacity. I was wondering what is the best way to manage battery. Should it be always either charging or discharging Should it be plugged in all time. I barely get 2 hours and 30 minutes on battery. Is that normal? I run XCode, VMWare Fusion (for Visual Studio), Mail app, Chrome (5-10 tabs) and Itunes (mp3). The brightness is 60% on battery. I already did the calibration.

I put that up late last night then had a look at the analytics and found that I am seeing only the request uri portion of the URLs in analytics as I would with any other site only with this one it's a problem as winnipeg.mb.apartmentjunkie.com/map/ and brandon.mb.apartmentjunkie.com/map/ are two different pages and shouldn't be lumped together as /map/ I know the kneejerk response is likely going to be "hey just setup a different google analytics profile for each subdomain" but there will eventually be a lot of subdomains so google's cap of 50 is going to be too limited and even more important I want to see the data in aggregate for the most part. I am thinking of making a change to the javascript, to something like: _gaq.push(['_trackPageview',String(document.domain) + String(document.location)]); But am unsure if this is the best way and figured someone else on wm.se would have had a similar situation that they could talk a bit about.

• Which version of rails should I install with ruby 2.0.0 installed?

  Hi I am building a ROR development environment on a new computer with windows 7, now I have Ruby version 2.0.0 and Gems version 2.2.2 installed. Which version of Rails should I install? I saw this on rubyonrails.org/download : "We recommend Ruby 2.1.0 for use with Rails. We stopped supporting Ruby 1.8.x after Rails 3.2. Ruby 1.9.2+ will be supported until Rails 5." I will be working on a long-time project, I'm just trying to lessen the headaches I will have later. Right now, the latest Rails -v is 4.1.0 and they recommend Ruby 2.1.0 for use with Rails. I think the best option is to go with this set. Any other thoughts?

• Continuous Integration using Docker

  One of the main advantages of Docker is the isolated environment it brings, and I want to leverage that advantage in my continuous integration workflow. A "normal" CI workflow goes something like this: Poll repository for changes Pull from repository Install dependencies Run tests In a Dockerized workflow, it would be something like this: Poll repository for changes Pull from repository Build docker image Run docker image as container Run tests Kill docker container My problem is with the "run tests" step: since Docker is an isolated environment, intuitively I would like to treat it as one; this means the preferred method of communication are sockets. However, this only works well in certain situations (a webapp, for example). When testing different kind of services (for example, a background service that only communicated with a database), a different approach would be required. What is the best way to approach this problem? Is it a problem with my application's design, and should I design it in a more TDD, service-oriented way that always listens on some socket? Or should I just give up on isolation, and do something like this: Poll repository for changes Pull from repository Build docker image Run docker image as container Open SSH session into container Run tests Kill docker container SSH'ing into the container seems like an ugly solution to me, since it requires deep knowledge of the contents of the container, and thus break the isolation. I would love to hear SO's different approaches to this problem.

• Flexible virtualization infrastructure Design with libvirt

  I'm going to install a CentOS6 Server with Virtualization ( libvirtd ) capabilities on a DELL Server with Hardware RAID5 of around 6T of disk space ( It has 4x2T disks in a PERC700 RAID Controller ). I'm going then to install some guests which requires few resources except one that needs 500GB of disk space, 8/16GB of RAM and good performances. I was thinking about file images for guests storage but I'm not sure about the 500GB VM what needs good performances so that an LVM device could be better. So my question is what would be the best layout concerning: RAID setup ( RAID5, RAID1 + 1 disk for OS only. ) disk partitioning ( using the entire disk/ leave free space for future use and extending it with LVM ) guests storage management ( LVM devices or file images ( considering the 500GB VM that is performance demanding ) or mixed ) Where to put guests storage? /var/lib/libvirt/images or maybe in a custom dir separated from system /home/VMs Thanks in advance for any hint.

• What have you learnt that has a steep learning curve?

  Recently, I've invested time in learning the intricacies of Git and it has got me thinking about time and learning. (My previous experience with version control systems was only limited use of CVS and SVN.) It took me a whole day's worth of reading to be able to understand the concepts and differences of Git. There are an infinite number of things available for us to learn. Some, more useful than others. I don't know Fortran - I'm relatively young. But looking back at the preceding years of my life, I notice that I'm busier and busier as time goes on. The amount of things I have to get through in a day is increasingly out of my control. It doesn't take a genius to extrapolate that information and realise I'll have even less time in the future - unless I get fired, but I have no strong plans relating to that idea for now. So, given that I have much more time and energy now than I will have in the future: what have you learnt, that has a steep learning curve, that you would possibly recommend to a fellow programmer? Edit: I've stumbled upon the excellent question What programming skills have provided you the best return on investment? and hav realised that my way of approaching how to spend learning time was naive - it doesn't matter if ten useful concepts can be learnt in the time of one if they're worth it.

• Computer Science Degrees and Real-World Experience

  Recently, at a family reunion-type event I was asked by a high school student how important it is to get a computer science degree in order to get a job as a programmer in lieu of actual programming experience. The kid has been working with Python and the Blender project as he's into making games and the like; it sounds like he has some decent programming chops. Now, as someone that has gone through a computer science degree my initial response to this question is to say, "You absolutely MUST get a computer science degree in order to get a job as a programmer!" However, as I thought about this I was unsure as to whether my initial reaction was due in part to my own suffering as a CS student or because I feel that this is actually the case. Now, for me, I can say that I rarely use anything that I learned in college, in terms of the extremely hard math, algorithms, etc, etc. but I did come away with a decent attitude and the willingness to work through tough problems. I just don't know what to tell this kid; I feel like I should tell him to do the CS degree but I have hired so many programmers that majored in things like English, Philosophy, and other liberal arts-type degrees, even some that never went to college. In fact my best developer, falls into this latter category. He got started writing software for his church or something and then it took off into a passion. So, while I know this is one of those juicy potential down vote questions, I am just curious as to what everyone else thinks about this topic. Would you tell a high school kid about this? Perhaps if he/she already knows a good deal of programming and loves it he doesn't need a CS degree and could expand his horizons with a liberal arts degree. I know one of the creators of the Django web framework was a American Literature major and he is obviously a pretty gifted developer. Anyway, thanks for the consideration.

• What could be my path? Networking, programming, or something else?

  Well first and foremost, I would like to give my brief description: I was an aviation student but I didn't pursue that path because I lost my interest. Now I'm an I.T. student and currently stopped schooling because of confusion. I don't know which path I should choose: could it be programming or networking? Someone told me that on networking the money is easy, the job is easy. Others told me that programming is best suited for me because I'm very skilled and excellent at figures. I want to chose networking, but I can't find my passion for it, my mind tells me but my heart doesn't... and on programming, I don't know which language I should pick or if I like it or not. A good mentor, even if only online, would be a very big plus to me, but I don't think if there are many who could spent their time on teaching a nobody... but I'm very eager to learn. My real passion is gaming! I want to work in the gaming industry, I want to be a man behind those games! I've been a gamer freak since birth. But I don't know how to get in to that industry. I don't know what to do. I don't know which path would really suit me. Sorry if some of you find this a pointless question, but please bear with me, this could be the turn of my life.

• Tell me what&rsquo;s wrong! &ndash; An XNA sample demonstrating exception handling and reporting in

  I’ve always enjoyed using Nick Gravelyn’s exception handling in all of my games. You’re always going to encounter those unhandled exception that your players are going to ferret out and having a method to display them rather than just crashing to the dashboard is definitely more of an elegant solution. But the other day I got to thinking…what if we could do more? What if instead of just displaying the error, we could encourage the players to send us the error. So I started playing with that an expanding upon Nick’s sample code to see what I could come up with. I got close to what I envisioned, but unfortunately there were some limitations to just what the XNA API could do. In my head I was picturing the players hitting “Send Message” and a 360 message would just be sent to the XBLIG developer. Unfortunately, you can only send messages in an XNA game to someone you’re currently in a network session with. Since I didn’t want to have a 360 server running all the time, virally connecting to players just to get error messages, I did the next best thing and just open up a 360 message and encourage them to manually enter the gamertag. Maybe someday we’ll be able to do that a little better, but this works for now. In the sample, players can hit the “A” button or key to generate in an exception. If the debugger is not attached, then the Exception message screen will be shown explaining what has happened and giving the player a chance to send a 360 message to the gamertag provided or maybe even just send an email. Nick’s code has been changed just a bit. It now accepts any PlayerIndex (no longer hard coded to just PlayerIndex.One) and it no longer uses a MessageBox to get the users selection. The code has also been modified so that it works both for the 360 and for the PC. Check out “Tell me what’s wrong!” and let me know if you have any thoughts or suggestions.   Top executives of most smaller organizations want their companies to be different from the larger corporations. They want their organizations smaller in size; but bigger in productivity by eliminating red tapes and corporate bureaucracy. When the company is smaller, people often work like firefighters – taking on new business and technology challenges without thinking about any procedures and guidelines. People also tend to wear many hats to accomplish tasks quickly in order to integrate new businesses. For example, software developers in smaller organizations may take on responsibilities of client interactions, requirements gathering, design and development, code deployment, production support, network infrastructure support, database design and maintenance along with countless other duties. In addition, systems in smaller organizations tend to be loosely guarded. So, people often don't follow many procedures in order to setup environments and implement technical projects. It's not uncommon to change code and deploy without anyone realizing. Similarly, business requirements may also get defined in an informal manner without any type of documentation. As the company grows, everything starts to change significantly impacting people and the overall business process. Suddenly, following procedures become extremely important. Consequently, new roles, guidelines and procedures start to emerge. Everything from business process to technology implementation start to become more and more process oriented. Organizations start to define and document steps, invent procedure to track process and systems level changes, and start restricting access to various systems for security reasons. At the same time, as a growing company start doing businesses with larger clienteles, they are automatically forced to abide by all sorts of industry compliance laws. Moreover, growing companies tend to recruit experienced individuals to fill new roles who usually bring their expertise from larger and more bureaucratic organizations.   Despite the best efforts from the top executives, it seems increased number of procedures and guidelines as well as new recruits automatically contribute to the evolution of corporate bureaucracy. Maybe, corporate bureaucracy is an inevitable side effect of a growing organization.

  I have many "side-projects" that were not part of my past jobs. Just for example: Configuring web site environment for professors and friends Configuring a Linux box that does the routing, firewall (iptables), backup and file sharing (samba) for my apartment Developing small websites for things as simple as party invites to polling friends. Running my own SMTP server with domain keys, SPF and DNSBL Etc., etc. What would be the appropriate section to mention this? Should I even mention it? Perhaps it's best to just bring it up during the interview. I would especially appreciate the opinion of hiring managers.

  I am wanting to setup our production IIS environments with a provisioning portal to ensure that deployment staff always setup sites in a uniform configuration, and that they don't actually have remote access to the servers directly. What is the best 'simple' provisioning tool for such a purpose? Do people write their own using something like Powershell remoting?   When I run the start-server command on mod_wsgi-experess, I get this output: Server URL : http://localhost:8000/ Server Root : /tmp/mod_wsgi-localhost:8000:0 Server Conf : /tmp/mod_wsgi-localhost:8000:0/httpd.conf Error Log : /tmp/mod_wsgi-localhost:8000:0/error_log httpd: Syntax error on line 2 of /tmp/mod_wsgi-localhost:8000:0/httpd.conf: module version_module is built-in and can't be loaded The line 2 in the httpd.conf in the tmp folder that it is referring to says the following. It was automatically created by mod_wsgi: LoadModule version_module '/usr/local/apache/modules/mod_version.so' I am running Apache 2.2.21 on CentOS 5.10. I am stumped. Any ideas how to get over this obstacle? I should mention that this is a cross-post of a StackOverflow question, after I realized that SO was probably not the best place to ask it.

• Google Fonts API JSON Data in WordPress Options-Framework-Theme

  I'm developing a child-theme off of the new Twenty Twelve theme using Wordpress 3.4.2 and the development version of the Options Theme Framework by Devin Price. In Devin's tutorial, it shows of a way to implement 15 Google Web Fonts into the Theme Options page, but not all of them (roughly 560). I know I can create a "manual list", like in the tutorial that states each one with fallbacks, but this is time consuming and unproductive as Google may or may not add to, update, change or remove some of these fonts from their list. The list I've created above will ultimately store unavailable fonts the user thinks is there because of what they can see in the drop-down menu and it won't have any new ones - making the list and some selections obsolete. On the Google Developer API Web Fonts page, it talks briefly on retrieving a "dynamic list" using JSON/JavaScript. I was wondering how would I be able to pull the Google Web Fonts API into my Wordpress Theme Options page so I'm not creating my own list or have to constantly release an update to solve this issue. Could someone please walk me through what I would need to paste into my options.php, functions.php, /inc/options-framework.php file etc. or even in a new one to implement this? I've also had a look into some screencasts, plugins and tutorials on how it works, but none of them are specific enough for people just starting out. Please keep in mind I'm not the best coder... Thank you.

• Good resources for learning Rails?

  I just finished working through Peter Cooper's "Beginning Ruby". So now I've got a reasonable grounding in the Ruby language and would like to move onto learning Rails. This question's answers give some good pointers, but I'd like to hear some specific reviews of books and online materials. I generally learn best by working through books with good practical/technical examples AND some passive reading content that breaks up the study between practical and reading sessions (this is what made "Beginning Ruby" great for me), but I'm worried that RoR is evolving fast and that any printed book I order might be obsolete by the time I get it and work through it. Is this a fair worry? Or can anyone recommend a good Rails 3 book that should be up to date at least for the next year or so? Also, I had a brief look at some of the online resources from the other questions, and Rails for Zombies seems to get a lot of praise. Has anyone here actually used it as their introductory guide to Rails? Basically I'd like to hear first-hand accounts of people who went through this "Ruby-to-Rails" learning phase recently and which materials were useful to you.
