• Part 3: Customization Strategy or how long does it take

  The previous part in this blog should have made us aware, that many procedures are required to manage all these steps. To review your status let me ask you a question:What is your Customization Strategy?Your answer might be something like, 'customization strategy, well, we have standards and we let requirement documents approve'.Let me ask you another question:How long does it take to redeploy all your customizations into a fresh installation?In 90% of all installations the answer to this question would be: we can't!Although no one would have to do it (hopefully), just thinking about it and recognizing that we have today too many manual steps involved, different procedures and sometimes (undocumented) manual steps to complete a customization installation. And ... in general too many customizations.Why is working with customizations often so complicated and time consuming?Here are the key reasons as I have identified them in my projects:Customization standards defined, but not maintainedDifferent knowledge on developer side (results getting an individual developer touch)No need to automate deployment (not forced by client)Different documentation styles, not easy to hand over to someone elseDifferent development concepts, difficult for the maintenanceJust the minimum present for testing, often positive testing onlyDeviations from naming conventions accepted, although definedComplicated procedures, therefore sometimes partially ignoredAnd last but not least, hand made version control (still)If you would have to 'redeploy all your customizations' you would have to Follow all your own standards and best practiceTrack deviations and define corrective tasksAutomate as much as possible, minimize manual tasksDo not allow any change coming in without version controlUtilize products to support you in deploymentMinimize hand made scripts and extensive documentationReview regularly used techniques to guarantee that all are in line with the current release and also easy maintainableCreate solution libraries and force the team to contribute and reuseDefine quality activities and execute themDefine a procedure to release customizationsI know, it is easy to write down, but much harder to manage. • Huge procedurally generated 'wilderness' worlds

  Hi. I'm sure you all know of games like Dwarf Fortress - massive, procedural generated wilderness and land. Something like this, taken from this very useful article. However, I was wondering how I could apply this to a much larger scale; the scale of Minecraft comes to mind (isn't that something like 8x the size of the Earth's surface?). Pseudo-infinite, I think the best term would be. The article talks about fractal perlin noise. I am no way an expert on it, but I get the general idea (it's some kind of randomly generated noise which is semi-coherent, so not just random pixel values). I could just define regions X by X in size, add some region loading type stuff, and have one bit of noise generating a region. But this would result in just huge amounts of islands. On the other extreme, I don't think I can really generate a supermassive sheet of perlin noise. And it would just be one big island, I think. I am pretty sure Perlin noise, or some noise, would be the answer in some way. I mean, the map is really nice looking. And you could replace the ascii with tiles, and get something very nice looking. • Keyboard Navigation of File Open Dialog in Windows 7

  In Windows XP standard File - Open dialog, the top has a "Look In" box. I can press Alt+I to drop down a tree of the disks folders and easily navigate to other folders or network shares. In Windows 7, I can't seem to navigate the File - Open dialog as easily. The best I've been able to muster is to tab 5 times (in Excel 2007, but I assume it's a windows standard), then use arrow keys or use Alt+arrow keys like a browser to get around. It's simply not as good because I can't see the whole tree at once. Is there a way to see the whole folder tree? If not, do you have any other tips for keyboard navigation of the file open dialog in Windows 7?

• Should a database server be in a different VM instance as an application?

  I'm setting up a database server as a separate VM in my server so that I can control resources, and make backups of just that instance. I own a server that will reside in a colo soon. Is this the best way to approach my DB regarding scalability? Are there any security concerns? Do I listen at localhost still, even though it's a separate instance? And, is there any benefit to running your DB (PostgreSQL in my case) in the same machine as your application (web based SAAS application in my case)?

• Configuring Ubuntu for Global SOCKS5 proxy

  Does anyone know the best way to configure Ubuntu to use a SOCKS5 proxy for all network traffic? Server is ubuntu server - all cli. So I cannot set via the Proxy Settings GUI. We want to push all outbound traffic through the proxy (apt-get, http, https, etc). I do need to separate ssh traffic so it stays locally. Everything else should hit the proxy server. not that it matters, but I'm using Squid for the proxy server. I know this is easy on Mac and Windows as you can set a proxy on the actual network interface. Can you do the same on Ubuntu?

• ECMP Load Balancing in JUNOS

  I'm trying to figure out how to use ECMP load balancing in JUNOS. I know this isn't the best way to load balance, but its quick and dirty and gets done what I need to. In ScreenOS this was pretty easy. • CruiseControl.Net - not able to see Project Statistics

  Hi all, I've made a reinstallation of the buildserver and can no longer see the standard graphs of project statistics. The error message shown is "Missing/Invalid statistics reports. Please check if you have enabled the Statistics Publisher, and statistics have been collected atleast once after that." To the best of my knowledge, the ccnet.config file has not been changed in this respect and by inspection it is verified that I have a Statistics / statisticsList-section for the project. Furthermore, the values appear in the Artifacts\statistics.csv and Artifacts\report.xml files. My guess would then be StatisticsGraph.xslt, which I have copied fresh from distribution to both Server\xlst and WebDashboard\xslt (why are they located in both places, by the way!?). Rebuild and check - still same error message. Any hints to how to debug this would be appreciated!

• How to install mod_wsgi 3.1 on Ubuntu 9.10

  I have a Python 3 web app so mod_wsgi < 3.1 doesn't cut it for me. However, on my Ubuntu 9.10 installation there doesn't seem to be a package for mod_wsgi 3.1. Is there an alternative repository that has a package for mod_wsgi 3.1? There's a new Ubuntu release not so long from now, will it contain mod_wsgi 3.1? Some other distro ready with mod_wsgi 3.1 to recommend? Maybe my best bet is to compile it myself? From a quick google it looks like I only need the python and apache dev packages installed. Thanks!

• Keep context-configuration when redeploying via Cargo

  I am using Tomcat 7 to host a web-application that requires a JNDI datasource to be set up. Because this resource is specific to this application, I would like to configure it inside the application-specific context-descriptor in $CATALINA_BASE/conf/[enginename]/[hostname]/. I am also using Cargo from Maven to deploy the web-application to Tomcat. The problem is that when I do a redeploy with Cargo, it first undeploys the application, before deploying it again. When undeploying it, Tomcat deletes the context-descriptor of the application, so it won't work after redeploying. I could of course package the context-descriptor with the application, but I would like to keep any such container-specifics out of the .war. Another alternative is to configure the datasource in the global context-descriptor, but that too seems wrong, because the datasource is supposed to be exclusive to my application. Is my approach fundamentally wrong? What is the best practice here? Is there any way to prevent Tomcat from deleting the descriptor when undeploying?

• How Do I Print Photos?

  Other than for Windows in Ubuntu there are no fancy utilities provided from printer manufacturers to print photos. I am aware of Gnome Photo Printer and of Photoprint, the first being easy to handle, the latter having more options. However I wonder if there are any other or maybe even better alternatives (including plugins) to perform the following tasks: Print photos in the best photo-resolution the driver offers Adjust paper size for standard values of photo papers Choose paper tray if the printer has more than one Print out multiple photos on one page including mixed sizes (grids) Multiple prints with same settings Borderless printing if the printer is capable of this Any additional options like pre-processing for color correction or noise reduction would be nice to have but are not so essential. Update According to this spec it seems not to so easy to accomplish the simple task of printing photos. Indeed all applications I have gone through have major drawbacks that make printing photos almost impossible. Below I will list what put me off using them for photo printing: Gnome Photo Printer: no thumbnails, no grids Photoprint: does not keep settings, GUI broken, no standard photo size, no thumbs Eye Of Gnome: no multiple pages, no grids Gimp + Images Grid Layout: far too many steps to finally find that prints are always different to their previews. F-Spot: no grids Picasa 3: no grids, very few fixed paper sizes, 300 dpi only flPhoto: strange GUI, no thumbs, no printer settings, did not print at all Windows: Ooops - everything works fine! But I want Ubuntu to do this! After half a pack of ink cartridges and half a pack of photo paper cards I am getting tired of testing. At least Gimp and Picasa looked promising but both don't keep their promise when it comes to printing. I'd already be happy to quickly print a few photos with EOG if bug #80220 was fixed - but it's still on "wishlist".

• Apache virtual host for drupal test site

  Hello, I am a programmer, trying to launch my first website.. through different helpful posts in sf and others, I setup an account with Linode and set up a slice (Debian, Apache, ..etc). I have a Drupal site under development, and like to have a test site in the Linode server as well. Now, I like to have a site setup with the following requirement. What is the best way to setup and protect the test site along with the actual (production) site?. Is virtual host is the answer? To protect the test site, is .htaccess authentication sufficient to prevent access from public and robots? I also modifying the theme, database contents etc, so having two sites under one drupal installation may not be good idea . what do u suggest? thanks in advance. bsreekanth.

• Recommended main loop style

  I've just begun attempting an FPS with JMonkeyEngine, but I'm currently stuck as to the best way to implement the main loop - especially with regards to non-instantaneous user actions. By that, I mean things like reloading a weapon. The user starts the action, and it continues for a while with an animation and some sound, and when it completes, game state updates. (I should mention that it's not technically a loop, it's an update method, called as often as possible. Is that different? Me no understand terminology). So, far I've considered : Animation driven Player presses reload Start reload animation If user stars another action, abort animation, start new action. When the animation_complete event is received (JMonkeyEngine provides this), update ammo counters. Event driven Player presses reload Start reload animation Queue up a out-of-thread method to be called at time t + (duration of reload animation) If user starts another action, cancel both animation and queued method. When queued method executes, update ammo. This avoids relying on the animation event (JMonkeyEngine has a particular quirk), but brings in the possibility of thread problems. 'Blocking' (not sure of the correct term) Player presses reload Start reloading animation reloading = true reloadedStartTime = now while (reloading && ((now - reloadingStartTime) < reloadingDuration)) { If user starts another action, break and cancel reloading. } Update ammo counters reloading = false My main concern is that actions can interrupt each other. Reloading can be interrupted by firing, or by dropping or changing weapon, crouching can be interrupted by running, etc. What's the recommended way to handle this? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each method? I'm leaning towards event-driven, even though it requires more care; failing that, blocking.

• Firefox 12's hardware acceleration on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

  After I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (32 bits), Firefox 12 works fine but without hardware acceleration. Needless to say I have the latest nVidia's proprietary drivers installed and my Firefox Preferences, on "Advanced" tab, "Browsing" section, have the option "Use hardware acceleration when available" checked. I have tried the following things before asking this question: Creating a boolean key "webgl.force-enabled" and set it to true on Firefox's page about:config; Starting a new profile like commented on thread Mozilla Firefox 12 is very slow on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS; I have updated my nVidia driver to version 295.53. And none of this have worked. As you can see below in my Firefox's page about:support report, "Graphics" section shows no "GPU Accelerated Windows": Adapter Description NVIDIA Corporation -- GeForce GTX 460/PCIe/SSE2 Vendor ID NVIDIA Corporation Device ID GeForce GTX 460/PCIe/SSE2 Driver Version 4.2.0 NVIDIA 295.53 WebGL Renderer NVIDIA Corporation -- GeForce GTX 460/PCIe/SSE2 -- 4.2.0 NVIDIA 295.53 GPU Accelerated Windows 0 AzureBackend skia I use the following site to test hardware acceleration: http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/Performance/FishBowl/ On Windows 7 I get 60 fps even with 1,750 fishes on browser's Full Screen Mode (1680x1050x32bit-color). On Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, same nVidia drivers (as shown in report), won't go faster than 15 fps with only 1,000 fishes. Can anybody help me? Best Regards,

• Guide to the web development ecosystem

  I'm a long-time software developer, and I've been thrown in the deep, deep end of developing from the ground up what will hopefully be a highly scalable and interactive web application. I've been out of the web game for about 8 years, and even when I was last in it, I wasn't exactly on the cutting edge. I think I've made judicious design decisions and I'm quite happy with the progress I've been making so far, but new, hot web technologies keep crawling out of the woodwork and into my headspace, forcing me to continually revalidate my implementation decisions. Complicating things even further is the preponderance of out-of-date information and the difficulty of knowing what is out of date in the first place. What I'm wondering is, are there any comprehensive books or guides dedicated to compiling and comparing the technologies out there, end-to-end in the web application stack? I'm happy to learn new techs on demand, but I don't like learning about them after I've already spent time going in another direction. I'm looking for the sort of executive info a CTO might read to make sure the best architectural decisions are being made. And just to be clear, this is a question about resources, not about specific technology suggestions.

• Which data structure should I use for dynamically generated platforms?

  I'm creating a platform type of game with various types of platforms. Platforms that move, shake, rotate, etc. Multiple types and multiple of each type can be on the screen at once. The platforms will be procedural generated. I'm trying to figure out which of the following would be a better platform system: Pre-allocate all platforms when the scene loads, storing each platform type into different platform type arrays( i.e. regPlatformArray ), and just getting one when I need one. The other option is to allocate and load what I need when my code needs it. The problem with 1 is keeping up with the indices that are in use on screen and which aren't. The problem with 2 is I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around how I would store these platforms so that I can call the update/draw methods on them and managing that data structure that holds them. The data structure would constantly be growing and shrinking. It seems there could be too much complexity. I'm using the cocos2d iPhone game engine. Anyways, which option would be best or is there a better option?

As an architect I need to be a jack of all trades.  This is what helps me to bring the big picture of a project into focus for developers with different skills to accomplish the goals of the project. It is a key when the mix technologies crosses Windows, Unix and Mainframe with different languages and databases.  The larger the company that the project is for the more likely this scenario will arise. As a consultant and a developer I need to have specialized skills in order to get the job done efficiently.  if I have a SharePoint or Windows Phone project knowing the object model details and possible roadblocks of the technology allow me to stay within budgets as well as better advise the client on technology decisions. • Developing professionally for iOS, Android and web - an insight

  This is not really a question on how to develop all three, I know various cross platform ways and so on. But I more want to know from developer standpoint how hard it is to basically develop iOS, Android and web apps? I am currently in my first job as a mobile/web developer. I have already developed my first iPhone/iPad app and now I have to develop the app for android because the web version I tried just didn't perform as well as needed and web databases just did not seem to make the cut. But I am not sure it's possible to be good at developing all 3 in terms of remembering all the api's etc. I wouldn't say I have an issue with the programming languages just how to use the api's for the various platforms. Also, all the other languages I look at, in my spare time, just feel like I am spreading myself to thin. Is it feasible for one person to be developing ios, android and web apps? Should I think about reducing it to iOS and web based apps? I develop everything by myself, so I have no one to discuss what the best solutions are for everything and I am just trying to workout as I go along. So any cross platform developers out there? Do companies have different teams for different platforms? Any insight would just help me get my head together. Hopefully this question makes sense.

• Lexmark X5650 doesn't print (scanning works)

  I want to use a Lexmark X5650 under Ubuntu. When I connect it via USB, Ubuntu recognizes the device, but can't find a driver. On the Lexmark support site, you can select "Unix/Linux" and then "Ubuntu 9.04", "9.10", "10.04" and "10.10". However, all versions lead to the same driver: lexmark-08z-series-driver-1.0-1.i386.deb.sh.tar.gz (Last updated: 2012-04-13). While installing this driver, the installer asks me to connect the device. As soon as I connect it via USB, Ubuntu now adds the printer automatically. So after the installation completed, I had 2 printers set up. But I can't print anything (I tried it with both printer configurations). Scanning works fine, though. So I guess the driver installation and the device connection are successful. When I try to print something, the print job is listed in the printing queue, but nothing happens. After some time, I get an error message which starts a debug wizard, but in the end it reads something like "Sorry, couldn't find the reason". I had several different error messages (unfortunately, I didn't record them), one was approximately like "printer cannot communicate with computer". Another said that my color ink was low (which is true, but black is full). Another said there was an input/output error. I tried it with Ubuntu 11.10. Because I read that some people had success with 10.04., I installed it in QEMU and installed the driver there, too. Same problem, though. I'd like to upgrade to 12.04, if it should work there for any reason, but I read that for some people this printer stopped working in 12.04 :/ So, it would be best if the printer would work in 12.04. If that's not possible, I'd be fine with starting a QEMU virtual machine with any GNU/Linux distribution that works with my printer.

• Powershell overruling Perl binmode?

  I have a Perl script which creates a binary file while scanning a very large text file. It outputs to STDOUT which I redirect in the commandline to a file. To optimize it I'm making changes then seeing how low it takes to run. On Linux for this I use the "time" command. On Windows the best way to time a program seemed to be to PowerShell's "measure-command". This seemed to work fine but I noticed the generated files were larger. On examination I found that the files generated from within PowerShell begin with a BOM and contain CRLF pairs! My Perl script has a "binmode STDOUT" directive and does work correctly in a normal dosbox. Is this a bug or misfeature in PowerShell or measure-command? Has it affected others creating binary files by means other than Perl? Googling hasn't turned anything up so far. I'm using Perl 5.12, PowerShell v1.0 and Windows XP.
