• After installing Windows Phone 8 SDK, Connectify doesn't work

  Today I installed Windows Phone 8 SDK from the official site. After installing and a couple of restarts (it restarted the PC to enable Hyper-V), I opened Connectify. I use Connectify Hotspot to connect my iPod to the internet as I have an ethernet connection and no wireless router. The problem is that now, Connectify doesn't show WiFi in Share Over. The attached screenshot shows this. Previously, before I installed the SDK, it would show Ethernet and Wi-Fi. I would select WiFi and share my internet. Now, this is completely screwed. EDIT: I found out that the Microsoft Virtual Wi-Fi Miniport Driver has got disabled and I am not able to enable it again. Please advise. • How To Use AutoFill on a Google Docs Spreadsheet [Quick Tips]

  Have you ever wanted to fill an entire row or column with a series of values? If you’re an Excel user, you can do the same thing in Google Docs. If you haven’t used either, here’s the quick way to do it. Just type in a couple of numbers in sequence… 1 2 3 works pretty well. You could also put them across a row instead of down a column. Then move your mouse over the dot in the corner until the pointer changes, then just drag it downward (or if you are filling a row instead, you can drag it to the right). Let go of the mouse, and your data will be automatically filled in. You could also make it skip by 1 instead, like 2 4 6 8, etc… It all works the same way. Sadly there’s no really advanced options like Excel has, but for most uses, this is good enough. Also, we’re aware this is a very simple tip for most of you, but we’re trying to help the beginners out as well! • server shrinks html file to 0bytes on upload

  Hi there, I have come across a very unusual problem. I am working on a website at the moment and whenever I upload a file to the server, it becomes a 0kb file. I have changed ftp software to filezilla to see would this help and it hasn't. I have compared it to other sites I am working on the permissions are the same numbers 0644 but on the site that I am having the trouble with the permissions have the prefix- flcdmpe(0644). Would this be the problem and if so any ideas how to change it?, changing the permissions doesn't work. I have been onto the host company and they cannot figure it out at all. • What are the correct set of DLLs and placement for SSL support in mIRC on 64 bit Windows?

  I am using mIRC 6.35 on a fresh install of Windows 7 64-bit. No matter what versions of the OpenSSL DLLs I use, nor where I place them, I cannot get mIRC to work with SSL; I get the "ssl not supported" error. The recommended DLLs on mIRC's help page (/ssl.html on the mIRC site) do not work no matter if I put them in the mIRC Program Files folder or anywhere else. Same with the DLLs from http://www.slproweb.com/products/Win32OpenSSL.html which also require Visual C++ runtimes. I am unsure if I need the 32bit DLLs (because mIRC itself is 32 bit), or the 64-bit DLLs, nor where to correctly place them. (Perhaps I currently have a case of incorrect DLLs in a path I am not aware of overriding the other placements...) Does ANYONE have any tips for 'debugging' this, or do they themselves have it working? Thanks in advance!

• Install proprietary drivers 14.04 NVIDIA (steam segmentation issue)

  Recently, I finally got the official drivers for my NVIDIA 560 Ti card installed on Ubuntu 14.04 (hooray) However I started looking into installing Steam and I'm getting segmentation errors when I try to run the software. I tried installing 32-bit libs and it seemed like they weren't available or they were already installed. Upon further investigation, I found that a solution is to install the proprietary drivers, install steam then switch back to the other drivers. I'm not really sure what "proprietary drivers" are in all honesty. Has anyone gone through this process that could provide some insight here? (I installed the official 64-bit driver from the NVIDIA site for my 560 Ti just for reference. And the Ubuntu version installed is 64-bit as well) Update: This is the error text I get when trying to run steam after installing it via the ubuntu store. • Optimising Database Mirroring over WAN

    I recently got asked by our network guys about botlenecks in the WAN that used for mirroring to our DR I site. They asked me to turn off encryption of Database Mirroring so that the riverbed software  they were using could optimise the packets sent over the WAN. I was a bit sceptical at first about the security risks, but it seems the riverbed software has its own form of obfuscation making the packets difficult to read. After reading an article by rusanu I realised that it could be done with minimal downtime and potential reducing network traffic by 5-10% on its own. • Anti-spam measures for websites

  What are anti-spam measure I should consider before launching my user content website? Some things I have considered: Silent JavaScript based CAPTCHA on the register page (I do not have an implementation) Validate emails by forcing a confirmation link/number Allow X amount of comments per 10 minutes and Y per 2 hours (I am considering excited first time users who want to experience the site) Disallow link until user is trusted (I am not sure how a user will become trusted) Run all comments, messages, etc. through a spam filter. Check to see if messages are duplicate or similar (I may not bother with this. I'd like the system to be strong without this) I also timestamp everything which I then can retrieve as a long on my administrator page. What other measures can I take or consider?

• Nginx or Apache for a VPS?

  I consider myself to be an inexperienced user/administrator when it comes to running my VPS. I can get by with a few CLI commands, I can set up Webmin and I can set up Yum repos, but beyond the very basic stuff, I'm out of my depth. So far, I'm running Apache. I don't know it particularly well, but I can get by with editing httpd.conf if I'm told what to edit. I've heard good things about Nginx and that it's not as resource-hungry as Apache. I'd like to give it a go, but I can't find any information about its suitability for administrators like me, with little experience of sysadmin or web server config. Webmin now has support for Nginx, so getting it installed and running probably won't be too much of a problem. What I'm wondering is, from a site administrator perspective, is running Nginx as transparent as running Apache? IE, at the moment, I can just throw up Wordpress and Drupal sites without having much to worry about or having to make any config changes to Apache. Would Nginx be as transparent?

• How to fix sound in wolfenstein Enemy Territory

  I installed wolf:et, and i cant get sound to work. Everything that i have installed is in default paths, i had 10.4 and then upgraded to 10.10 via software update gui. I had sound working in 10.04 with method under 2. I have tried following killall esd; et; esd with that i get ------- sound initialization ------- /dev/adsp: No such file or directory Could not open /dev/adsp ------------------------------------ sudo -i echo "et.x86 0 0 direct" /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss echo "et.x86 0 0 disable" /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/oss exit with that i get bash: /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss: No such file or directory and indeed i do not have that, i have only sub0 and sub1 in pcm0p I have tried running et with et-sdl-sound script, but with that i get this output in console http://pastebin.com/J7gRU1uh I have probably messed up sdl libraries, could not get sound to work, so downloaded new from debian package site and installed them. Tried setting SDL_AUDIODRIVER="pulse" in et-sdl-sound, looks like i am getting same error as in method 3. pasuspender -- et +set s_alsa_pcm plughw:0 gives me ------- sound initialization ------- /dev/adsp: No such file or directory Could not open /dev/adsp _------------------------------------ Misc: @Oli: i do not know if i am running pulse or esd, how can i check that?

• Good Laptop .NET Developer VM Setup

  I was torn between putting this question on this site or SuperUsers. I've tried to do a good bit of searching on this, and while I find plenty of info on why to go with a VM or not, there isn't much practical advise on HOW to best set things up. Here's what I currently HAVE: HP EliteBook 1540, quad-core, 8GB memory, 500GB 7200 RPM HD, eSATA port. Descent machine. Should work just fine. Windows 7 64-bit Host OS. This also acts as my day-to-day basic stuff (email, Word Docs, etc...) OS. VMWare Desktop Windows 7 64-bit Guest OS with all my .NET dev tools, frameworks, etc loaded on it. It's configured to use 2 cores and up to 6GB of memory. I figure that the dev env will need more than email, word, etc... So, this seemed like a good option to me, but I find with the VM running, things tend to slow down all around on both the host and guest OS. Memory and CPU utilization don't seem to be an issue, but I/O does. I tried running the VM on an external eSATA drive, figuring that the extra channel might pick up the slack. Things only got worse (could be my eSATA enclosure). So, for all of that I have basically two questions in one. Has anyone used this sort of setup and are there any gotchas either around the VMWare configuration or anything else I may have missed here that you can point me to? Is there another option that might work better? For example, I've considered trying a lighter weight Host OS and run both of my environments as VMs? I tried this with Server 2008 Hyper-V, but I lose too much laptop functionality going this route, so I never completed setup. I'm not averse to Linux as a host OS, though I'm no Linux expert. If I'm missing any critical info, feel free to ask. Thanks in advance for your help. Steve

• FAVICON: Favicon now showing up

Doing a grep, I see the following in home.htm which looks right for me(I have also confirmed it's in the HEAD section within home.htm): home.htm: <link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/png" href="favicon.png"> The favicon.png file is in the same directory as the home.html file. • Single sign-on for SharePoint to MySite?

  I've got a fairly simple SharePoint 2010 farm set up: 2 WFE servers with Network Load Balancing hosting the main portal site. As per Microsoft's best practice recommendations I've set up My Sites in a separate web application. As some of the user base are not using domain joined PCs they have to login once for the portal (http://portal) and then again when the access My Sites since they're crossing in to a separate web application on a separate host (http://mysite). Portal & MySite are both hosted on the same physical WFE servers. Is there an easy way to set up some thing to stop this happening and just have them login once? I understand that there's plans for us to deploy ISA in the not too distant future - could we use ISA to manage authentication to the two sites so that the users only need to log in once?

• b Is it bad to have the Reverse DNS for two IPs point to the same domain name?

  I am in the process of setting up a new server for my web application (the site will be moved, it is not for load balancing or the like), which has a different IP address from my existing server. My current server has a reverse DNS PTR record set up pointing its IP to mydomain.com. Is it bad to set up a reverse DNS PTR record for the new IP pointing to mydomain.com as well? Or should I wait until I do my migration to set up the record? Update: I forgot to mention, the A record for the mydomain.com points to the old server's IP address, not the new one, if it matters.

  In this post I will be looking into a new feature that has been added to theVS 2012 IDE. I am talking about Page Inspector that gives developers a very good/handy way to identify layout issues and to find out which part of server side code is responsible for that HTML snippet of code.If you are interested in reading other posts about VS 2012 and .Net 4.5 please have a look here and here.This tool is integrated into the VS 2012 IDE.We can launch it in different ways. 1) We will create a new ASP.Net MVC application (an Internet application). I will not add any code.2) In the Solution Explorer I choose my project and right-click. From the available options select View in Page InspectorHave a look at the picture below.  3) We can launch Page Inspector from the Standard Toolbar. Please have a look at the picture below.   4) Let's view our application with Page Inspector. First I inspect the About link-menu.I can see very quickly the HTML that is rendering for that link to appear. I also see the server side code (the actual view, _Layout.cshtml) that is responsible for that link. This is something developers always craved for. We can also see the CSS styles that are used to style this link (About).Have a look at the picture below Obviously there are similar tools that I have been using in the past when I wanted to change a part of the HTML or see what piece of CSS code affects my layout. I used Firebug when viewing my web applications in the Firefox browser. Internet Explorer and Chrome have also great similar tools that help web developers to identify issues with a site's appearance/issues.Please bear in mind that Page Inspector works with all forms of the ASP.Net stack e.g Web Forms,Web Pages.Hope it helps!!!!!

• Joomla 1.5 Media Manager sets incorrect file permissions when uploading

  Howdy all, I have a Joomla 1.5 installation running on Windows Server 2008, installed via the Web Platform Installer. When uploading images with the media manager (native uploader, not the flash bulk uploader), the files arrive on the server correctly, but are given incorrect permissions. Specifically, the IIS_IUSRS group is not given access to the file. I might be incorrect about what group/user is SUPPOSED to get access to the files, but so far, I've found that unless I give IIS_IUSRS access to the uploaded files, they won't appear on the site or in the media manager (appear as broken images). Once I give IIS_IUSRS permission to the files, they work fine. So far, all the research I've done has led me to linux specific fixes that involve either changing the umask on the server, or directly modifying the Joomla codebase to add an appropriate chmod command to the upload process, but I really don't want to modify Joomla directly. I have to believe there's a setting here somewhere that will do the job, either on the Joomla or Windows side of the equation. Any thoughts? Scott

• What to do with a Blowfish Key?

  I just completed backing up 8 years of my Gmail using http://gmvault.org I selected the --encrypt option which uses Blowfish encryption. According to their site: Emails can be encrypted with the option -e --encrypt. With that option, the Blowfish encryption is used to crypt your emails and chats and the first time you activate it, a secret key is randomly generated and stored in $HOME/.gmvault/token.sec. Keep great care of the secret key as if you loose or delete it your stored emails won't be readable anymore !!! I'm using OSX Lion. I'm a software engineer but far from an encryption expert. What should I do with this key? It seems like leaving it where it is now (alongside the emails) sort of misses the point of encrypting them to begin with.

The input to stdin will be of the form, (they'll be numbers, i'll be using an example here) c d q r a b d e p q so x y means x is connected to y (not viceversa) There are 2 paths in that example. a->b->c->d->e and p->q->r. You need to print all the unique paths from that graph The output should be of the format a->b->c->d->e p->q->r Notes You can assume the numbers are chosen such that one path doesn't intersect the other (one node belongs to one path) The pairs are in random order. • Apache Error Log - "Web Path" instead of Filesystem Path

  Hello everyone, I'm running Apache on Linux and I'm using OpenSSH to provide SFTP access to some customers so they can upload their pages and also look at their respective site logs (access & error). I'm using the new feature in OpenSSH to chroot their SFTP access and so far so good. My problem is that on the error_log, every reference for "File not found..." is given using the OS filesystem path as opposed to the "Web" path. I'd rather have the web path on the error log in order not to reveal the OS path. Since I'm already chrooting the users, I don't want to reveal WHERE on the OS their files are actually located... Is it possible to change this behaviour via any directive? I tried looking for it but couldn't find anything :( Thanks, Craconia

• Need a PCIe desktop graphics card for dual-monitor

  I have a mid-2008 workstation with two HD monitors supporting HDMI and DVI inputs. Since Ubuntu 11.10, I have experienced no end of trouble with my NVidia Quadro NVS 290 in TwinView dual-monitor output. Others have similar desktop TwinView woes. I want a new graphics card. Previously I asked for a graphics card recommendation and response was Nvidia Geforce GTS 450... but really I'm looking for someone who has actually got a working dual-monitor desktop to tell me what card they use so I can get something that is known to work. So please, people who have no-issues with their 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04 Unity 3D desktop spread across two HD-resolution external monitors (either DVI or HDMI connector), and who also run Google Chrome (which throws a spanner due to its own GPU compositing)... please let me know what graphics card you have so I can buy one. Gathering Options These seem to be the Nvidia cards featuring dual DVI. But they all seem to be gaming cards - what has dual-DVI, good support, but is not a massive gaming card? Nvidia GTS 450 (previously recommended) - 2x DVI Nvidia GTX 550 Ti (used by System76) - 2x DVI Nvidia GT 430 (used by System76) - 1xDVI, 1xHDMI Nvidia GT 640 (found on NVidia site) - 1xDVI, 1xHDMI (also GT 620, GT 630) Has anyone had a good desktop dual-monitor Unity 3D experience with ATI cards?

• How can I connect a SAS drive to USB? [closed]

  I have a Dell T710 with Seagate Cheetah 15k.7 SAS disks. If the T710 motherboard dies, I'll need to resort to one of my nightly off-site backups and salvage the journal/logfile from the SAS disk to bring the backup bang up-to-date. I need a way of reading the healthy-but-inaccessible SAS disc that does not depend on the only SAS-capable machine I have to hand. So I bought: SAS to SATA Adapter and: USB 2.0 to SATA Adapter with Power ...so that I could read the SAS drive via USB. I can plug it all together just fine. The chain looks like: USB - SATA - SAS. But the drive does not spin up and the computer doesn't even acknowledge anything being attached by USB. Is there a cheap external enclosure I can buy for SAS drives? I can't believe these USB to SATA adapters are everywhere but the USB to SAS adapters are almost non-existent...

• What could cause Vista machines to degrade in performance?

  We have installed several machines running Windows Vista at a client site. These machines run the same set of applications each day and are not operated with by any user. They mainly run a 3D application for digital signage purposes. After a few months I noticed that several machines suffer from really bad stuttering. The performance is unacceptable. At first I figured it was faulty hardware. But after putting a fresh image on them, they run perfectly fine again. These are Core i7 machines with GTX 280 graphics adapters. They should be able to handle the workload without any trouble (and they do, at least for a while). I really have no idea how to track down the source of this issue. Especially since not all of the machines display the same issue.

• Website content hosted with Google. Good or bad?

  I recently decided to host my styles.css and various scripts on Google Docs and link them into my website. I also have all my images hosted through Picasa so that they too will load much faster and consistently across users. My site has most of its traffic from Japan, Africa, and South America, so I assume there will be a performance boost for my users since my server is hosted in Hong Kong. I (in Canada) have measured my load times to be half of what they used to be. Basically it's a free CDN for my personal stuff. I'm not too sure about all of this yet, so here's my question: what are the caveats of this setup? EDIT: So after rummaging through the ToS of both Picasa and Docs, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with this kind of use.

I am an experienced WPF developer, and I seriously love the technology. I feel pretty good when working with XAML, bindings, templates, triggers, MVVM and all the WPF world of goodness. Now I have recieved a job offer which surpasses my current salary by 50%. It a position to work as a C# developer in an ASP.Net MVC4 + HTML5 project. I have never EVER in my whole life worked with ASP.Net, nor HTML and I never ever did a web page or web application before. I certainly find myself worried that I will lose all the comfort and joy I live every day coding in WPF. And in the other hand I understand and have seen in these 3/4 months of job hunting that there's a LOT of ASP.Net and really really little or no WPF in the job market (at least here), so I somehow feel forced towards it. So, my question is: Can anybody who had to go thru this type of change tell me the pros and cons of working with these technologies from a developer's perspective? I don't care about open-source / non-microsoft or non-desktop, I care about REAL development experience in every day working with these techs, and whether ASP.Net MVC 4 + HTML + JS is as crappy as I think it is comparing it to WPF.
