• Clean install of IIS 6 on Windows Server 2003 ignoring 'web.config'?

  Hi, Any help with this would be really appreciated! As the title suggests, I'm running a brand new install of Windows Server 2003 and IIS 6 and I'm basically attempting to mirror a live web server onto a new internal development server, which runs the same setup. It's an ASP.NET site that relies heavily on URL rewriting (using Intelligencia). ASP.NET is set to run on v2.0.50727 on both servers. I've tried intentionally introduce syntax errors into the web.config and it just appears to be ignoring them completely, so given IIS 6 doesn't read the web.config, the rest of the site doesn't work at all (I get a 404 error, as a 'Default.aspx' doesn't exist since the web.config handles the default page rewriting). Having looked at the Application Mapping, '.config' files are set to use the default 'c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_isapi.dll' which exists. Is there anything else I may be missing? Thanks in advance.

  I am using GridView in asp .net and editing data with edit command field property (as we know after updating the edited row, we automatically update the database), and I want to use transactions (with begin to commit statement - including rollback) to commit this update query in database, after clicking in some button (after some events for example), not automatically to insert or update the edited data from grid directly to the DB...so I want to save them somewhere temporary (even many edited rows - not just one row) and then to confirm the transaction - to update the real tables in database... Any suggestions are welcomed... • More than one Custome control are not working properly

  Hello Developers, I have developed a ASP.Net Server custom control in C# for 3.5. named "myCheckBoxList" inherited from CheckBoxList web control. Working is very simple. It just works as a two option buttons. I have taken a CheckBoxList which will show two fixed checkboxes always. When I check one checkbox then another will uncheck as vise versa. This control works perfectly only when I have placed only one instance of that control on web page. If I place more than one instance of control then it doesnt works. Please, I need solution from expert minds from developers as stackoverflow users.

• What is the recommended approach to add static subdomains to a website?

  I would like to create a few static subdomains like: mycategory.mydomain.com in a rather small website and would like it to point to the folder: mydomain.com/mycategory without showing such redirection in browser address bar. What is an easiest way to achieve it? I can do it in either IIS settings, asp.net, C# code, etc I guess there are better ways then creating a few separate Sites in IIS - one for each subdomain.

The book makes the following comment: Previous editions of this book tackled web services, a feature that allows you to create code routines that can be called by other applications over the Internet.Web services are more interesting when considering rich client development (because they allow you to give web features to ordinary desktop applications),and they’re in the process of being replaced by a new technology known as WCF (Windows Communication Foundation). For those reasons, web services aren’t covered in this book.However,if you want to branch out and explore the web service world,you can download the web service chapters from the previous edition of this book from the book’s download page.The information in these chapters still applies to ASP.NET 3.5,because the web service feature hasn’t changed. Can someone offer, in "layman's terms" what exactly a web service is and if, indeed, they are being replaced, at least in .Net, with WCF? What would be a practical example of a web service? Are they stand alone programs that run on a web server and are invoked by a client or clients?

• Are you using Virtual Machine as your primary development enviroment?

  Recently I have purchased a notebook that cames with Windows Home Basic (that don't have with ASP.Net/IIS. I thought in upgrade the Windows version to one with ASP.Net/IIS, but I thought in another possibility: I have an Hard Disk Case with a 360Gb HD. I thought in create a virtual machine with Windows Ultimate (installing too ASP.Net, IIS and Visual Studio 2008) in this HD Case, then I can access my "development enviroment" in any computer that I will work on (my desktop machine and my notebook). But I was worried about the performance. I don't have experience working in Virtual Machines (I use it just to quick compatibility tests)... Are you using Virtual Machine as your primary development enviroment? What your finds? ==================== Thanks for your answers! It really did help me! I would like to know too about portability ie.: the virtual machine that I created in my laptop will work in the desktop? I will need re-activate Windows?

• Looking for a file database

  A few years ago there was a PHP script around called paFileDB. Essentially it created a database of files that end users could download and rate. It would keep track of the number of downloads as well. I am looking for a replacement of this coded in ASP.net C#. For the last week I have been searching around for "asp.net C# file database" and have just gotten how to upload files to a database. I have also search with some other terms. I do not need a full blown CMS like DotNetNuke or SharePoint. All I have been looking for is a system I could easily add to my existing .net C# site. I have thought about coding one myself, but with me being rather busy at work and this being a personal project, I simply do not have the time to code this myself. I hope that you guys can help. • Modifications in default document won't take effect

  We have a website developed by ASP.NET+IIS7 and its default document is default.aspx. It works fine. But when we tried to switch the default to index.html, weird things happened. We have modified web.config as follows: <defaultDocument> <files> <clear /> <add value="index.html" /> </files> </defaultDocument> and we have clear everything under C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files``, and restart the worker process. We even changed the name of Default.aspx to dddd.aspx. But everything stays the same when accessing with http://localhost/<MyAppName>/! And when we tried to access with http://localhost/<MyAppName>/index.html, it works fine. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

• PDF Viewer Showing Last Page...

  I have a asp.net app that writes a pdf to file. Then, later that file is opened into a window (standard acrobat reader) for viewing. No problems there. The weird part... The entire document loads as it should, but the Reader initially shows the last page in the document on the screen. The user must then scroll up to the first page. It doesn't happen all the time (about 50%) and occurs across several test computers. Is there a switch in the code I'm suppose to use in creating the file or displaying the file to tell the reader to "start displaying the document on the first page?" Environment particulars: asp.net 3.5 vb, websupergoo's abcpdf.net pro 7 (assembly that creates the pdf file), Windows 2008 Server, IIS7 Thanks

• Urls parameters doesn't encoding correctly!

  I'am using asp.net mvc version 1.0 and I've a problem with some parameter in a url! My url is look like so(http://localhost:2282/Tags/PostList/c#) routes.MapRoute( "TagsRoute", "Tags/PostList/{tag}", new { controller="Tags",Action="PostList",tag = "" } ); In effect the problem is that tag paramter isn't encoding and so simbol # is ignored! I am using an actionlink but maybe with version 1.0 isn't encoding parameter directly! <%=Html.ActionLink(itemtags.Tags.TagName, "PostList","Tags", new { tag = itemtags.Tags.TagName }, new { style = "color:red;" })%> With this actionlink only whitespace are encoding correctly, infact asp.net mvc become asp.net%20mvc and it work fine! But c# isn't encoding :( So I try to use Server.UrlEncode, and in effect it happen some stuff!!! Infact c# became c%2523 but it isn't correct again because hexadecimal of # is %23! Have you some solutions???? Route Contraints? Thanks

  Hello! I decidet to start my own web project. It should be highload project, and I can't decide which technologies should I use. I'm good in ASP.NET MVC, but I like languages like Python more than C#. I read a lot about Python and Django/Pylons/etc but I didn't find any good examples of highload projects on python. So, the question is: Is Python good for highload project? Is it enough fast? And if it is, are python frameworks like django/pylons/etc good for this? Or asp.net mvc will be better choice?   Hi: I'm reading up on ASP.NET, and just came to a chapter that explains how to upload a file to your website. It says that in order to save a file to your file system, in the case of every OS except Win Server '03, an ASP.NET page executes in the security context of the ASPNET account. I don't have an ASPNET account running on my machine (win xp pro sp3; .NET 3.5). The program runs fine, by the way, I'm just trying to understand what an ASPNET account is exactly, and why it doesn't seem to show up on my list of user accounts. Thanks.

For instance, in the service layer code sample there is a method public IEnumerable<Contact> ListContacts() { return _repository.ListContacts(); } If instead you wanted a IEnumerable, should it go in the service layer, or is there somewhere else that is the "correct" place? Perhaps more appropriately, if you have a separate viewmodel for each view associated with ContactController, should ContactManagerService have a separate method to return each viewmodel?

• CAD/CAM without C++

  Hello, Is it possible to do CAD/CAM software without having to use C++? My company developed their software with c/C++ but that was more than 10 years ago. Today,there is a lot of legacy code that switching would force us to get rid of but i was wondering what the actual risks are. We have a lot of mathematical algorithms for toolpath calculations, feature recognition and simulation and 3D Rendering and i was wondering if C# can handles all of that without great performance loss. Is it a utopia to rewrite such algorithms in c# or should that language only deal with UI. We are not talking about game development here (Halo 3 or Call Of Duty) so how much processing does CAD/CAM really need? Can anybody enlighten me on this matter? Most of my colleagues are hardcore C++ programmers and although i program in c++ i love .NET but i am having a hard time selling .NET to them other than basic UI. Does it make sense to consider switching to .NET in such a field, or is it just not a wise idea? Thank you

  I have a problem with calling soap service from php page. I was implemented two page,first page was created in php, and second page was created in asp.net. In asp.net application I have SOAP service, which methods should be called from php.   I read a topic in this site about it, but decided to post another one as I want to write such a tool, but I don't have much experience in C# & .NET, so it could take me too much time just digging the Net, while someone can just direct me to the right library or classes to be used. So, straight to the point. I want to write a tool that, when activated, inverts absolutely all items on the screen and lets you work that way without torturing your eyes with bright light colors. Is there a way, in an outside assembly, without using friend assembly attribute (.Net reflection only), get class C so I can invoke any of the static string properties like this: Class C = <some .Net reflection code>; string expected = C.About_Name; If that is not possible, a .Net reflection code to get the string property value directly will suffice, but not ideal. • waitin closes browsers for all projects that are building.

  I'm having an issue running WatiN under CruiseControl.net, where on a .forceclose, watin is closing all open browser instances. I have multiple projects running under cruisecontrol, and its not uncommon for some of those projects to be building and testing at the same time. There has been more than one occasion where watin will close the browser window for a different project, causing it to fail. In my local tests, creating my watin instance under a new process fixes this issue. But running under cruisecontrol, when doing this, I lose my IE object: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Running CC.net as a service CC.Net server is Windows 2003 IE6 Any thoughts?
