  • My mental block - struggling to learn Objective C

    Hello people, this would be my first question after signing up! Anyway heres my question, I did Java at university and I was always told I am a good programmer. However I never pursued it as a career - I went into support and management instead. Im pretty much bored with my job, I have therefore started to learn Objective C so that I can develop apps for the iphone. I am currently watching several different Videos / Books. My problem is that when I go through the Apple documentation, although I understand most of it, sometimes I stumble. I believe that because you/we have the Apple documentation (i.e. Framework references) , everything should be clear, and therefore you should have no need to refer to a book or video (in order to learn how to use a particular class). But I alway do refer to a book and video and subsequently feel guilty as I believe the framework reference should be enough. (I therefore feel I am not up to being a programmer) I also believe that you shouldn't need example code in order to learn how to use a particular class because Apple provides documentation for each class, but AGAIN I find my self googling example code and I find my answer like that - again I feel guilty for doing this. Am I right in saying that Apple documentation is simply not clear? and that its ok to refer to a video/book or google? or forums for that matter? I have proffesional programmers who tell me that I am worrying too much and that I should get on with it and use all the resources that I have. I just cant seem to get round this mental block that I have in my head. When I start a programming project I am able to use the excellent search skills that I have to find the code I need, copy and paste it (yes I do understand it) BUT then I feel guilty telling myself that why didn't you think up the code yourself???? Therefore your not a real programmer, your just good at googling. Currently I am going through 20+ books so that I can learn most of the frameworks, syntax etc to develop iphone apps. I believe if I do this, then when I think of a project I can make it quickly. Should I read a few books, like 2-3 and then just start a project /app , and if I get stuck just google it and get the code I need? Can anybody please answer my questions?

Now i know a Compiler has the following parts: 1. Lexer 2. Parser 3. Intermediate Code Generator 4. Optimizer 5. Code Generator I want to begin with the Lexer part and move on to Parser. I am consulting the following book: Compilers: Principles, Techniques, and Tools by Alfred V. Aho, Ravi Sethi, Jeffrey D. Ullman. The thing is that this book is highly theoretical and perplexing to me. I really appreciate the authors. But the point is i am not able to begin my project, as if i am blinded where to go. Need guidance please help.

    I'm using Entity Framework 4.1 with a Code-First approach on an ASP.NET MVC site Say I have an entity named Profile that keeps track of a user's favorite book, and I want to track when the user updates their favorite book. UPDATED: Using the class below as an example, I want to set the FavoriteBookLastUpdated property to the current date whenever the value of the FavoriteBook property changes. public class Profile { public int Id { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public string FavoriteBook { get; set; } public DateTime? FavoriteBookLastUpdated { get; set; } } Right now I just update that field, if appropriate, in the controller's Edit action before calling the DBContext's SaveChanges() method. Is there a way I can put that logic in my model somehow? I'd prefer not to use triggers on the database side.

  • Do invariant assertions fit into C# programming?

    In the book coders at work, the author asks "How do you use invariants in your code". Please explain what this question means. I saw class invariants on wiki, but the example is in Java and I am not skilled enough in Java to relate this example to C#. .NET 4.0 introduces invariance, covariance, and contravariance and is well explained here. Invariance is so broad. The authors usage of the word seems unit test related. For those that read the book, what does the author mean? Are we talking about making an assumption and simply testing the validity after the unit test?

    Today I've encountered a very good book : UNIX to Linux® Porting: A Comprehensive Reference By Alfredo Mendoza, Chakarat Skawratananond, Artis Walker This reminded me of the thing I always wanted to know. "Porting Linux apps to Windows". I mean porting native Linux apps to native Windows with no platforms involved. If I can find any good book which explains this topic. I've lot of amazing linux command line tools in mind which needs a windows port. Please point me to relevant articles/tutorials/books. PS: please don't tell me to use linux emulation platforms like Cygwin.

  • Can anyone recommend a primer to Erlang?

    I've recently found myself getting more and more interested in Erlang. I've purchased a book (Programming in Erlang) and started reading up on the basics. Reading books is time consuming so I am looking to shortcut this a bit and go back to the book later. What I lack is a good introductory tutorial. Kind of like, hands on, this is what you need to get started in Erlang, these are best practices, this is how you organize code and this is how you do a small project. I've googled this topic extensively and haven't had much luck. ;)

  • Nested sql queries in rails when :has_and_belongst_to_many

    Hello, In my application I the next task that has not already been done by a user. I have Three models, A Book that has many Tasks and then I have a User that has has and belongs to many tasks. The table tasks_users table contains all completed tasks so I need to write a complex query to find the next task to perform. I have came up with two solutions in pure SQL that works, but I cant translate them to rails, thats what I need help with SELECT * FROM `tasks` WHERE `tasks`.`book_id` = @book_id AND `tasks`.`id` NOT IN ( SELECT `tasks_users`.`task_id` FROM `tasks_users` WHERE `tasks_users`.`user_id` = @user_id) ORDER BY `task`.`date` ASC LIMIT 1; and equally without nested select SELECT * FROM tasks LEFT JOIN tasks_users ON tasks_users.tasks_id = task.id AND tasks_users.user_id = @user_id WHERE tasks_users.task_id IS NULL AND tasks.book_id = @book_id LIMIT 1; This is what I Have done in rails with the MetaWhere plugin book.tasks.joins(:users.outer).where(:users => {:id => nil}) but I cant figure out how to get the current user there too, Thanks for any help!

    I've seen answers to both halves of my question, but I can't work out how to marry the two. I have a book model, and a translatedBook model. The translatedBook has a langage set up as model choices in the usual way: LANGUAGES = ( (u'it', u'Italian'), (u'ja', u'Japanese'), (u'es', u'Spanish'), (u'zh-cn', u'Simplified Chinese'), (u'zh-tw', u'Traditional Chinese'), (u'fr', u'French'), (u'el', u'Greek'), (u'ar', u'Arabic'), (u'bg', u'Bulgarian'), (u'bn', u'Bengali'), etc I know that to get "Italian" I have to do translatedBook.get_language_display on a Book object. But how do I get a list of distinct languages in their long format? I've tried: lang_avail = TargetText.objects.values('language').distinct().order_by('language') lang_avail = TargetText.objects.distinct().order_by('language').values('language'). lang_avail = TargetText.objects.all().distinct('language').order_by('language') but I can't seem to get what I want - which is a list like: "English, Italian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish" The final lang_avail listed above didn't return the list of 5, it returned the list of 355 (ie, # of books) with multiple repeats....

    before answer me plz thinking about the futures of these kind of program and answer me plz. I wanna get some data from oracle server like: 1-get all the function,package,procedure and etc for showing them or drop them & etc... 2-compile my *.sql files,get the result if they have problem & etc... becuz I was beginner in oracle first of all I for solve the second problem I try to connect to sqlPlus by RUN sqlplus and trace the output(I mean,I change the output stream of shell and trace what happend and handle the assigned message to customer. NOW THIS PART SUCCEED. just a little bit I have problem with get all result because the output is asynchronous.any way... [in this case I log in to oracle Server by send argument to the sqlplus by make a process in c#] after that I try to get all function,package or procedure name,but I have problem in speed!so I try to use oracle.DataAccess.dll to connect the database. now I m so confusing about: which way is correct way to build a program that work like Oracle Developer! I do not have any experience for like these program how work. If Your answer is I must use the second way follow this part plz: I search a little bit the Golden,PLedit (Benthic software),I have little bit problem how I must create the connection string?because I thinking about how I can find the host name or port number that oracle work on them?? am I need read the TNSNames.Ora file? IF your answer is I must use the first way follow this part plz: do u have any Idea for how I parse the output?because for example the result of a table is so confusing...[i can handle & program it but I really need someone experience,because the important things to me learn how such software work so nice and with quick response?] All of the has different style in output...   • Cocos2d: is it good practice to use a shared GameScene when having various levels?

    In my code (based on the ShootEmUp example in this book, which I highly reccomend, source code in chapter 8 available here) I often use the trick of accessing the GameScene via: +(GameScene*) sharedGameScene; which returns a reference to the static instance of GameScene. Is a static instance of GameScene as in the book still a valid pattern in case I want a MainMenu calling GameScene initialized with different level data each time (e.g. different enemies)? (I have created a sceneWithId:(int) method where I load different level data each time. Or should I pheraps create a GameScene class and then sublcass it? E.g. FirstGameScene : GameScene

I'm on chapter 4 and I'm getting the following compile error on the "if (segment == kShowSegmentIndex)" line: error:expected ')' before ';' token Here's my code: - (IBAction)toggleShowHide:(id)sender{ UISegmentedControl *segmentedControl = (UISegmentedControl *)sender; NSInteger segment = segmentedControl.selectedSegmentIndex; if (segment == kShowSegmentIndex) [switchView setHidden:NO]; else [switchView setHidden:YES]; } I've compared it with the code in the book several times and have retyped it. Sounds like this error is caused by improper brace placement. Any thoughts?

    Hi, Assume I have an order_dummy table where order_dummy_id, order_id, user_id, book_id, author_id are stored. You may complain the logic of my table but I somehow need to do it that way. I want to execute following queries. SELECT * FROM order_dummy WHERE order_id = 1 AND user_id = 1 AND book_id = 1 ORDER BY `order_dummy_id` DESC LIMIT 1 SELECT * FROM order_dummy WHERE order_id = 1 AND user_id = 1 AND book_id = 2 ORDER BY `order_dummy_id` DESC LIMIT 1 SELECT * FROM order_dummy WHERE order_id = 1 AND user_id = 1 AND book_id = 3 ORDER BY `order_dummy_id` DESC LIMIT 1 Please keep in mind that several numbers of same book is included in one order. Therefore, I list order_dummy_id by descending and limit 1 so only LATEST ORDER of A BOOK is shown. But my goal is to show other books in that way in one table. I used group by like this ... SELECT * FROM order_dummy WHERE order_id = 1 AND user_id = 1 GROUP BY book_id but it only shows order_dummy_id with ascending result. I have no idea anymore. Looking forward your kindness help!

    I am planning the implemention an Inheritance Mapper pattern for an application component http://martinfowler.com/eaaCatalog/inheritanceMappers.html One feature it needs to have is for a domain object to reference a large list of aggreageted items (10,000 other domain objects) So I need some kind of lazy loading collection to be passed out of the aggregate root domain object to other domain objects. To keep my (php) model scripts organised i am storing them in two folders: MyComponent\ controllers\ models\ domain\ <- domain objects, DDD repository, DDD factory daccess\ <- PoEAA data mappers, SQL queries etc views\ But now I am racking my brains wondering where my lazy loading collection sits. Any suggestions / justifications for putting it in one place over another another?   • Excel workbooks produced by POI don't work when linked

    Here is what I'm doing : Create a workbook in memory (book = new HSSFWorkbook(), ...) Save it to disk (book.write(...)) Open in Excel (ok) Create another workbook in Excel, which links to the first one (=PoiWorkbook?xls!A1) Close Excel Then everytime I open the second workbook again, all the links are #N/A, unless I also open the POI-generated workbook at the same time. I never saw this behaviour with standard workbooks created in Excel. Anyone has seen this and found a workaround ? Thanks.

  • reinitialize an object with self.__init__(...)

    Could anybody explain whether it is safe to reinitialize an object by calling "self.init(". as shown in the following simplified example? The reason i'm asking is that i couldn't find this method neither in several python books nor in internet. There are some who suggest to list all attributes and set them to initial value one by one. Also, I am open to suggestions for optimizing the query - adding more index on the tables etc... EDIT: Based on the comments below: 1) @Craig Ringer: PostgreSQL version: 8.4.13 and only index is id for both tables. 2) @andrefsp: edge is almost x2 times bigger than object.

    Hello, I've been trying to learn Rails for a while now and I just can not piece it all together with random blogs and SO questions, so I've decided I need a full book/ebook. Can anyone suggest a good one? I've been looking at Agile Web Development With Rails 4th edition. There is an old question about Ruby On Rails books but it is from 2008 and there has been new Rails releases since then. I basically would like a book that is more than a reference, but also doesn't assume I'm a non-programmer. Also, I already know a lot of Ruby. So, what books would you recommend that is up to date and also doesn't treat me like a baby?

  • How to study for MCTS 70-433 exam (SQL Server 2008 Database Development) and is it worth it?

    Hi, I'm working as a QA (Software Tester with 3 years of experience) and was thinking of getting some certifications for my career. I already have the ISTQB certification and was thinking of doing SCJP along with MCTS 70-433 certification (SQL Server 2008 Database Development) as the next move. So my question is this: 1) Who should go for the 70-433 certification and is it worth going for, for a career in QA? 2) What would be a good book to study for this? I'm just looking for a simple book that is written just to the point and not much bloated up such as technical bibles. Not that they aren't good but they just take up too much of time. Maybe something similar to the one written by Kathy Sierra & Bert Bates for SCJP. It is written in a very simple language and is enough to do SCJP. Edit: I'm still searching for answers to this.   • How can I (both) create a row and accessing that row in the same 'Stored Procedure'?

    Hello, I'd like to get the value of the id column for an object just after I've created it. But I don't want to run another query for that. My book for beginner (SQL Server 2008 for Dummies) says that there are 2 tables (inserted and deleted) that hold the last row(s) that have been inserted, updated, or deleted. Unfortunately, only Triggers (says the book) can access those tables. But, if I use triggers, they will go off each time I "insert" a row even when I don't need them that functionality. Can I obtain the same effect with a Store Procedure (without having to run a separate query?) This is what I'm trying to do CREATE PROCEDURE myProcedure DECLARE @OrganizationName @ColumnID OUTPUT AS INSERT INTO Organization (OrganizationName) VALUES (@OrganizationName) SET @ColumnID = (// Please, I need Help here ...)
